Chris Tremlett, the Hampshire fast bowler, has been added to England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand at Old Trafford to replace Matthew Hoggard, who broke his thumb against Durham last week.Tremlett won his three Test caps last summer against India, where he made his mark with a couple of lively spells, and earns his latest chance after some impressive performances during the early stages of the summer. He bowled well against New Zealand for England Lions at The Rose Bowl and took 5 for 67 against Surrey in a recent County Championship match. However, during that game he suffered from back spasms and was unable to bowl in the second innings.Tremlett was part of England’s one-day squad for the New Zealand tour and was later added to the Test party before breaking down during the second warm-up match with a side strain and flying home.”Chris performed well in last summer’s Test series against India and was unfortunate to have to return home early from the tour of New Zealand through injury,” national selector Geoff Miller said. “He is a player whose form we have been closely monitoring for some time and I am sure that he will be very pleased to be back in the squad and keen to stake his claim for a regular place in our bowling attack.”Tremlett will find it hard to force his way in for the second Test as the three fast bowlers at Lord’s – Ryan Sidebottom, James Anderson and Stuart Broad – all had decent matches. However, Tremlett’s extra bounce will be an enticing option for the selectors on what is expected to be a hard, quick pitch at Old Trafford.”We’ve been consistent [with selection] in the past, and the young bowlers bowled well in this game. Some of the spells were outstanding and some not so great,” Michael Vaughan said. “They are an inconsistent unit, and they are getting better all the time. Tremlett has been called into the 12 as a possible starter, but it’s very difficult until we’ve seen the wicket to tell you what that final eleven will be. But I’d have thought that the guys that bowled reasonably well here will be given another opportunity.”Tremlett will link up with the England squad after playing for Hampshire in their Friends Provident Trophy match against Worcestershire, at The Rose Bowl, on Tuesday. The other options available to the selectors as pace-bowling cover were Graham Onions, the Durham swing bowler, who has been in good form recently and there was also talk of a possible recall for Steve Harmison, the man who broke Hoggard’s finger. But Harmison’s figures this season have not made a compelling case for his return to the England squad. “Harmy just needs to bowl a bit more for Durham, and get big five-wicket hauls,” Vaughan said.England squad Michael Vaughan (capt), Alastair Cook, Andrew Strauss, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Tim Ambrose (wk), Stuart Broad, Ryan Sidebottom, Monty Panesar, James Anderson, Chris Tremlett

Wolves transfer update on Trincao

Wolves reportedly could sign Trincao on a permanent deal once his loan spell ends after the 2021/22 season, as he is likely to leave Barcelona.

The Lowdown: Trincao confirmed

As per Wolves’ official website, the Portugal international has signed on a season-long loan from the Catalan club, with an option to buy at the end of that arrangement.

He becomes Bruno Lage’s second signing of the summer transfer window so far and will now join up with the rest of his new teammates ahead of pre-season.

The Latest: Permanent deal?

According to Sport, Trincao is ‘more than likely’ to leave Barca once his loan spell at Molineux ends, and Wolves can sign him on a permanent deal for €29m (£24.9m) if they choose to take up the option.

The winger was ‘always open’ to a move away from the La Liga giants in order to get more minutes on the pitch, and if his loan spell is successful, he could well move to the Black Country permanently.

The Verdict: Sign

Unless he has an unsuccessful first season in English football, Wolves should really be looking to sign Trincao on a permanent basis.

The club’s technical director Scott Sellars clearly sees a lot of potential him, branding him an ‘exciting’ player who ‘drives with the ball well’ and has ‘good creativity’, and claims that Lage ‘speaks very highly of him’ (wolves.co.uk).

Trincao should have no problems fitting in with his new teammates either, given that a lot of them are also from Portugal and have played with him in the senior international team.

At just 21 years of age, he is a player with the world at his feet, and Wolves could benefit a lot by signing him permanently.

Fry drops Levy verdict amid Kane exit saga - Exclusive

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry insists that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy will not sell Harry Kane this summer, amid quotes from Levy over the weekend saying he will do best by the club.

Kane remains at the centre of one of the biggest stories of the transfer window this summer.

Per Sky Sports News, he has asked to leave the club, sparking interest from Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea.

The report also claimed that Kane wanted to have his future sorted before the beginning of Euro 2020 but he remains a Spurs player and captained the Three Lions in their 1-0 win over Croatia, though he did not score. It was Raheem Sterling who netted the only goal of the game.

Kane has come off one of his best seasons at Spurs, as he won both the Premier League’s Golden Boot and the Playmaker Award for the most assists.

And Fry does not believe that the striker will move anywhere this summer as Levy digs his heels in.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I think Daniel Levy will dig his heels in. I think Harry’s got three years left of his contract.

“I know from Harry’s point of view, he’ll want to leave now because of his age and everything, and his ambitions. I’m not sure Daniel Levy will let him leave, I’m really not.”

EFC fans react to Davide Ancelotti tweet

Carlo Ancelotti’s son Davide has taken to Twitter to bid farewell to Everton supporters.

The 31-year-old, who worked as an assistant coach to his father at Goodison Park, hailed Everton as a ‘special club’ with ‘amazing fans’. He offered his thanks and vowed that he would be a ‘Toffee forever’.

Ancelotti Sr left Everton at the beginning of the month to rejoin Real Madrid following the departure of Zinedine Zidane.

How did Ancelotti’s tenure at Everton go?

The Italian took over in December 2019 after Marco Silva was sacked with the Merseyside outfit languishing in the relegation zone.

After they recovered to finish in 12th place, they made a flying start to the 2020/21 campaign under Carlo Ancelotti. Everton topped the Premier League after winning four and drawing one of their first five matches, suggesting they could challenge for Europe.

However, they wound up slipping to a disappointing 10th place, ending the season with a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City. A permanent managerial successor to Ancelotti has yet to be appointed.

Everton fans flock to Davide Ancelotti farewell

While Carlo Ancelotti left many Everton fans enraged by the manner of his recent departure, there were plenty of Toffees supporters who appreciated his son’s comments about the club, taking to Twitter to say their thanks to Davide.

Love will return to Durham

Australian batsman Martin Love has pledged his future to Durham by signing acontract for his third consecutive season as the Club’s overseasprofessional

Durham CCC Media Release03-Aug-2002Australian batsman Martin Love has pledged his future to Durham by signing acontract for his third consecutive season as the Club’s overseasprofessional.Love has been forced to return to Australia this season because of a bad break to a little finger, which he suffered in June. But he will return for season 2003 when the Club will be allowed two overseas professionals for the first time.He says: “I am thrilled to be coming back next year where I can pick up where I left off, I just hope the injuries are kinder to me.”Durham Chairman Bill Midgley added: “We are delighted that Martin will be rejoining us next year. He is a fantastic batsman and his professional attitude provides our younger players with an ideal role model.”

Gers urged to sign Osayi-Samuel

According to Kevin Campbell, Bright Osayi-Samuel would do brilliantly at Glasgow Rangers were he to make the move to Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Osayi-Samuel to leave Fenerbahce

Osayi-Samuel made the move to Fenerbahce in Turkey from QPR in January, but it appears he may already be leaving the club.

Fener are looking to make £15m from player sales, and they are hoping to get £3m for Osayi-Samuel. He has been linked with a switch to Ibrox.

The Latest: Campbell urges Gers to sign winger

Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell has urged the Gers to sign the 23-year-old. He said:

“I think he would be a good signing at £3million.

“He is a player who has been long-linked with Rangers. They have clearly been coveting him for a while.

“A player of that quality for £3million is cheap money. Even though the transfer market in Scotland is different, that is cheap. I think that is about right for a player with a lot still to come.

“He has got bags of pace, he is direct and he is a threat. I think he would do brilliantly in Scotland.”

The Verdict: Worth a punt

Since making the move to Turkey, things have not gone fantastically well for Osayi-Samuel. He has managed just one goal and one assist for the club in 19 appearances (Transfermarkt) and, given Fenerbahce are already considering moving him on, he clearly hasn’t made too big an impact.

However, as he showed with five goals and nine assists in the Championship during the 2019/20 campaign he has plenty of ability and can be a danger down the flank.

At 23 years of age, he has 19 goals throughout his senior career and has plenty of time to improve as well. For Steven Gerrard and co, he may just be worth a punt at a measly £3m.

In other news, Rangers have also been urged to sign this young Dutchman.

Gambhir falls after steadying India A innings at Colombo

The honours were even at the end of the first day of the first unofficial Test between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo

Staff Reporter16-May-2002The honours were even at the end of the first day of the first unofficial Test between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo. After winning the toss, India A made 249 for five before stumps were drawn. In the morning, India lost opener Akash Chopra (4) and Sridharan Sriram (3) cheaply. With their team’s score on 14-2, opener Gautam Gambhir and captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar mounted a recovery. Batting sensibly, the duo put on 101 runs for the third wicket in almost 31 overs before Kanitkar was dismissed for a well-made 52.Rohan Gavaskar (8), who followed, made the briefest of stays before following his captain to the pavilion. Next man Jai P Yadav was India A’s last recognised batsman and with him rested the responsibility of providing Gambhir the required support. He soon grew into his role as the partnership prospered. With the score on 172, though, the tourists received another jolt when Gambhir fell after making a responsible 79 off 175 balls with 11 fours.Fortunately for them, their 17-year-old wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel, who replaced Gambhir, continued his good form with the bat. A healthy partnership with Yadav followed; the duo adding 77 unbeaten runs before play ended. At stumps, Yadav was batting on 64 while Patel was on 31.For Sri Lanka A, fast bowler Dulip Liyanage claimed three wickets. The other two India A wickets were shared by Pulasthi Gunaratne and Chamila Gamage.

Border issues allrounder challenge

SYDNEY, July 3 AAP – Australian selector Allan Border today challenged the nation’s cricketers to help end the search for a world class allrounder.

Valkerie Mangnall03-Jul-2002SYDNEY, July 3 AAP – Australian selector Allan Border today challenged the nation’s cricketers to help end the search for a world class allrounder.Border said the start of the coming season was a crucial time for Australia to unearth a genuine allrounder ahead of the 2003 World Cup.”We’ve been trying to get that role filled,” Border told reporters in Sydney.”We’ve got good candidates in there but they haven’t quite grabbed the position and said, `look, this is mine’.”Whoever sticks their hand up over the next 12 months or leading into the World Cup, that will be a key position for us.”NSW allrounder Shane Lee has not played a one-day international since April, 2001, during Australia’s tour of India.Meanwhile, young Tasmanian Shane Watson is Australia’s latest experiment in the position after selectors overlooked Andrew Symonds and Ian Harvey for the recent one-day series against Pakistan. But the jury remains undecided on 21-year-old Watson, who has a mediocre economy rate of 5.49 runs per over from his first seven one-day internationals.Border said while a new talent could emerge at any time, he was hopeful one of Australia’s tried allrounders would step up.”Who knows? Someone might just come out of the blue, that would be great,” Border said.”There’s four or five guys there that have been given opportunities in the past, haven’t quite grabbed it, they’ve shown glimpses of fantastic form.”I’m just hoping that they take the bull by the horns and start the season with the whips cracking and grab the position.”It’s what we really need and if we get that position filled well, we’re going to be very hard to beat in that World Cup.”Steve and Mark Waugh remain on the fringe of Australia’s one-day side after being axed earlier this year and either could play an allround role if they manage to win back a spot.Border said it was possible the brothers could return to the short version of the game.”If they’re playing for NSW next year, they’re in our thoughts, that’s all I can say on it,” Border said.”Whoever is playing first class cricket they’re in the hunt.”They’re very determined blokes, aren’t they, so anything could happen.”Border said he was not overly worried about the Waugh twins, who recently turned 37, ending their Test careers together and leaving a hole in the Australian team.Asked if the brothers were running the risk of losing their spots before making their own decisions on when to quit, Border said: “I suppose that’s the risk you take, isn’t it?””If you just keep putting yourself up for selection, as long as your form holds, there won’t be a problem. But the time will come, won’t it, that happens to all of us.”To me, if you keep yourself in good nick, age is not the problem. Stephen keeps saying that, as does Mark.”Border also said he was confident about Australia’s prospects for the World Cup, which starts in South Africa next February. And he was particularly pleased with Ricky Ponting’s one-day captaincy.”We’ve got world class players all over the place and we’ve got a host of younger guys coming through the ranks,” he said.”I suppose we might live or die about how those young players come through this next season … it will be interesting to see who comes out of the pack.”

Leeds hero Hernandez hailed

Leeds United hero Pablo Hernandez will have no problem finding another club this summer, according to ex-Scotland manager Alex McLeish.

The Lowdown: Hernandez moving on

The Spaniard’s brilliant spell at Elland Road will come to an end imminently, with his contract set to expire.

Hernandez has been a hugely influential figure for the Whites, helping them get back into the Premier League, scoring 36 goals and registering 41 assists along the way.

The Latest: McLeish hails Leeds hero

Someone who doesn’t believe the 36-year-old will be short of suitors this summer is McLeish, despite the attacking midfielder’s advancing years.

Speaking to Football Insider, he tipped Hernandez to copy the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva, remaining a key figure at an older age:

“If you take Aguero or David Silva for example. Both Manchester City players, both getting to that stage.

“Aguero rolled back the years with two fantastic goals his performance. That was great to see that after that daft penalty. You don’t want that to be your last memory of Aguero in a Man City shirt. He’s still young enough to score goals for Barcelona.

“The same for Hernandez. He’s 36, isn’t he? So you would think he’d be looking for one last hurrah, as much as he can.

“If he’s got the fitness in his body, I’m sure he’ll be able to do it. I’m sure, if he’s able, somebody will pluck him. He’s got a brilliant record and will be in demand.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-3/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Key signing for someone

At 36, it is the right time for Hernandez to leave Leeds, having only made three starts in the league in 2020/21 and with the team moving forward without him.

That being said, he still has enough left in the tank to be a force elsewhere, given the technical quality he possesses, not to mention his vast experience.

He will be a shrewd addition for whoever snaps him up, presumably in a slower-paced league, inspiring younger players around him, both in terms of quality and professionalism.

In other news, Leeds have been urged to sign one player in a key position this summer. Find out who it is here.
