FedEx Field is home to NFL side Washington Commanders, and as a result, the playing surface is not particularly the most appropriate for a soccer match. However, the Commanders plan to adjust not only the surface, but the stands as well to allow for a wider playing area. U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter was informed by organizers that any future USMNT game at the venue would be the same. The measurements of the pitch would be 70-yards wide – four yards short of FIFA's recommendation, but within the parameters.

During the summer of 2023, the Premier League Summer Series in the United States saw matches played at FedEx Field. The expectation is that the pitch and stadium adjustments will align with how the Premier League games were played at the stadium.

WHAT FEDEX FIELD REPRESENTATIVES SAID

“We plan to do that for these games and continue to do that so we can attract these big, competitive soccer games,” said Trista Langdon, the Commanders’ senior vice president for operations and guest experience. “So we’ll be ready.”

The German midfielder fled the sinking ship at Ingolstadt to join high-flying Brighton and has been one of the star men for Chris Hughton's side.

The 26-year-old's seven goals and eight assists proved pivotal in keeping his side in the English top flight and another key role awaits him next season.

The 35-year-old upset Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola when he snubbed a move to England to join Paris Saint-Germain and has shown why there was such a high demand for him despite his age.

An important figure for the French side on and off the field, he is a magnet for success and has no doubt had a key role in Neymar's quick adaptation to the capital city.

From Declan Rice transfer to William Saliba's contract: Arsenal's summer to do list

Despite their improvements this season, the Gunners have lot to sort out ahead of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign

Arsenal face a huge summer as they look to build on the impressive season they have enjoyed under Mikel Arteta. With some high profile arrivals and departures expected, it’s going to be a big few months for the Gunners leading up to the 2023-24 campaign, when they will not just be competing in the Premier League, but in the Champions League as well.

From player contracts, to new signings, there are plenty of situations that need resolving before the new season gets underway in August.

Below, GOAL takes a look at some of the most pressing matters facing Arsenal over the coming weeks…

Getty ImagesSaliba’s contract

Arsenal have done some great work when it comes to getting key players tied down to new long-term deals. Gabriel Magalhaes started things off earlier in the season, then Gabriel Martinell followed suit, and in the past fortnight extensions have been announced for Aaron Ramsdale and Bukayo Saka.

But despite talks having been ongoing throughout the season with William Saliba’s representatives, the centre-back has yet to put pen to paper on a deal of his own.

And with just 12 months of his current contract remaining, that is something that has to be resolved quickly this summer for Arsenal to avoid being placed in a difficult position with the France international, who could walk away on a free transfer at the end of the 2023-24 season.

That’s why it’s imperative that contract talks come to a swift conclusion over the coming weeks.

AdvertisementGettySign Rice and replace Xhaka

An overhaul of the midfield is going to be one of the key parts of Arsenal’s summer, with their attempt to land Declan Rice at the heart of it all.

With Granit Xhaka set for Bayer Leverkusen, a new face is needed and Arsenal have identified Rice as a priority. He will not be the only midfield arrival, as there is also interest in Moises Caicedo, Mason Mount and Ilkay Gundogan, but the West Ham skipper is the man who Mikel Arteta really wants.

It would be a huge signing for Arsenal if they can get it done, one that would send a message of intent out ahead of the rest of the summer.

Sort out Smith Rowe’s future

Emile Smith Rowe remains a hugely popular figure at Arsenal, which is why his continued absence from the team on a weekly basis causes so much debate. Given what he produced last season, it’s understandable that fans are confused as to why the attacking midfielder is being constantly overlooked by Arteta.

So Arenal need to make a decision this summer when it comes to Smith Rowe, because his current situation is not helping anybody. If Arteta does not see his part of his long-term plan, then he should be moved on, with the money that comes in being reinvested elsewhere.

GettyMake a decision on Balogun

Another player who Arsenal must decide on is Folarin Balogun. After enjoying such an incredible season on loan with Reims in France, Balogun is due for talks with Arsenal over his future this summer.

He has already made it known that he wants to be playing regular first-team football next season and at present that looks unlikely at Arsenal. And with Balogun having just two years left on his contract, another loan spell will not do the club any good, unless he signs an extension before he went out.

That scenario looks all but impossible, so it feels like the best thing Arsenal can do this summer is get as much money for Balogun as they possibly can. His stock is incredibly high right now and with several clubs understood to be interested, the young forward should bring in a very big transfer fee.

Both the north London clubs posted images of candelabras with the wrong number of branches, deviating from the correct nine-branched Hanukkiah. Spurs initially posted a Hanukkah message on Instagram featuring an 11-branched candelabrum. The error was promptly noticed by Daniel Sugarman, the director of public affairs for the Board of Deputies of British Jews, who expressed surprise at the mistake, especially considering they do have one person from the Jewish community in their social media team.

Tottenham, acknowledging the error, quickly removed the post, which included images of the Star of David, and replaced it with a previous year's image featuring a candelabra with the correct number of branches but without the Star of David.

Taylor leads way for 'exciting' new England

England’s newest one-day captain, James Taylor, may only be in the job for one game but he is hopeful of having a more lasting role to play in revitalising the team

Alan Gardner29-Apr-2015England’s newest one-day captain, James Taylor, may only be in the job for one game but he is hopeful of having a more lasting role to play in revitalising the team. Taylor has been appointed to lead a young and experimental side against Ireland next week and, although he is far from established as an ODI player, it serves as further confirmation of his leadership potential.Taylor conceded that England’s dismal World Cup, where they went out at the group stage, was proof they “weren’t good enough” at 50-over cricket in its modern, T20-flavoured incarnation but he believes that the players picked to face Ireland can help dispel widespread disillusionment. Taylor is one of only three World Cup squad members involved, although that is largely down to the majority being unavailable due to England’s Test tour of the Caribbean. The result is an XI that could feature six debutants, among them talents such as Sam Billings of Kent, a bequiffed wicketkeeper with a penchant for hitting sixes, David Willey, Northamptonshire’s rugged, left-arm seam-bowling allrounder, and the languid Hampshire strokemaker James Vince. The future, according to Taylor, starts now.”I think the results in the World Cup showed that we definitely weren’t good enough but we know that we’ve got the individuals to be way better than we were,” he said. “It was disappointing individuals didn’t stand up and perform like we could but we know we’ve got the talent to play against the best and perform against the best – consistently, that’s the key.”The guys around the England team are really exciting, we’ve seen how well the Test team are doing, so we know we’ve got the talent and it’s up to us to perform. There are some exciting young guys around the team and I’m leading a number of them out next Friday. I think it is a bright future for England and we’ve got to start now and be as positive as we can and get everybody behind us.”With Eoin Morgan absent at the IPL, Taylor confirmed he had not been appointed as “the one” but he has surely become used to England playing hard to get. It is six years since Taylor was named the Cricket Writers’ Club Young Player of the Year, aged 19, and four since he made his England debut, also against Ireland in Dublin. In that time, he has played two Tests and 17 ODIs – 15 of which have come since December, when he finally broke into the one-day side. Having captained Leicestershire at the age of 20, taken charge of Nottinghamshire’s limited-overs sides and led England Lions more times than some players have played for them, he will now get the chance to captain in a senior international. “I doubt it’s quite the same feeling as it would be if I was the one, if you know what I mean,” Taylor said. “But never mind that, it was still a huge thrill to hear that I’d been chosen.”Taylor was given the added responsibility in 50-over and T20 cricket at Nottinghamshire last season, with his coach, Mick Newell, identifying him as the natural successor to Chris Read. Newell’s role on the England selection panel therefore gave Taylor an advocate who knows him well.”It’s well deserved in terms of the work he’s put in, both as a batsman and as a captain with Notts and the England Lions,” Newell said. “He was a fairly obvious choice to captain this team and I’ve got absolutely no doubt he’s up to the job. He’s also the sort of person that seems to respond to extra responsibility with a better level of performance.”Morgan has only been in possession of the ODI captaincy for a few months and England have not yet signalled any intention to end his reign by eliding it into the inevitable post-World Cup perestroika but, if leadership candidates are being sought, Taylor has emerged as a leading candidate.Joe Root has carried the “Future England Captain” tag for most of the two-and-a-half years since his debut – and there have been suggestions that he could replace Morgan this summer – while Jos Buttler was named vice-captain before the World Cup. Taylor has more captaincy experience than both but he understandably wants to focus on firming up his place in the side, during what could be a period of flux.”It’s not something that I’m thinking about massively at the moment. At the forefront of my mind it’s getting in that side and getting a settled position, and scoring runs and winning games for England. It’s an exciting future, there’s some good young players around and I want to be in the mix there.”It’s something I enjoy doing, taking the added responsibility and leading from the front. I feel I’ve got a lot to offer in terms of the tactical nous behind the game but also leading with the bat – it’s something that I’ve done well when I’ve been captain, I’ve scored probably the most runs I’ve scored, so I like that added responsibility and pressure.”Having forced his way into England’s one-day side in Sri Lanka, hitting 90 at No. 3 after another captain, the soon-to-be-discarded Alastair Cook, was suspended for a slow over rate, Taylor was then shunted down the order to No. 6 as part of the last-minute changes that seemed to destabilise the World Cup campaign – and still he produced one of England’s more memorable performances, with an unbeaten 98 against Australia at the MCG. Taylor has yet to play an ODI at home but, after the trip to Dublin, England will host series against the World Cup finalists, Australia and New Zealand. He might be something of a fun-sized batsman but the fun has been distinctly lacking from England’s one-day cricket. Can Taylor help raise a few smiles this summer?”I’d love to do that. It’s up to the young guys to keep improving, keep performing on the big stage. I want to do that, I’ve done it in bits and bobs, in the World Cup and Sri Lanka. It’s something I’m excited to do, I love playing for England, love playing on the international stage. It’s real good fun when I’m out there and I want it to continue.”

Ronaldo wants to leave Man Utd – but none of Europe's top teams want Cristiano

It's happening again. Cristiano Ronaldo wants out, thus throwing the club's summer transfer plan into utter disarray. For Juventus 2021, read Manchester United 2022.

This time last year, Ronaldo was castigating the media for reporting – correctly – that he was determined to leave Turin.

And yet, just four days before the close of the transfer window, he joined United.

Then-Juve captain Giorgio Chiellini blamed the club's slow start to the season on the chaos caused by Cristiano's eleventh-hour exit.

"It would have been better for us if he had left earlier," the centre-half told last September.

"We paid something for it, a little bit of a shock, we paid something for it in terms of points. If he had left earlier, we would have had time to prepare better."

United must now fear the same 'Ronaldo effect'. Their pre-season preparations are going well, at least, though nobody is yet sure if that's because of Ronaldo's unavailability, or in spite of it.

Not even new boss Erik ten Hag. On the one hand, the Dutchman has insisted that Ronaldo is capable of playing the high-pressing game he wants to implement at Old Trafford. And yet, on the other, he has argued that a coach must adapt to his players.

What we do know for certain, though, is that Ronaldo has made an untimely mess at United.

As GOAL has already revealed, Ten Hag did not expect to have to go looking for a new forward this summer; he thought the search could be delayed until January at the earliest.

Ronaldo's transfer request has changed everything, though, generating nothing but further unrest and uncertainty.

Seeing Erling Haaland join Manchester City was bad enough for United but then they were beaten to the signing of Darwin Nunez by Liverpool, meaning there is a serious dearth of attacking options on the market right now.

However, there's no guarantee that Ronaldo will get the move he wants.

Indeed, the big difference between United's current predicament, and the situation Juve found themselves in last season, is that there is no obvious buyer for the 37-year-old.

Ronaldo may be renowned for his sense of timing but he and his agent, Jorge Mendes, appear to have got this call badly wrong.

The Portuguese is obviously used to getting what he wants – and what he wants is to continue playing for a Champions League contender.

United won't even be in the competition next season and as soon as it became clear that a top-four finish was beyond them, Mendes really needed to have a new club lined up for his No.1 client.

Because, right now, less than a fortnight before the start of the season, not one member of Europe's elite is presently in a position to offer Ronaldo a way out of Old Trafford.

As GOAL explains below, the top nine sides in next season's Champions League can't afford the five-time Ballon d'Or winner or, even more damningly, just don't want him…

Getty Images9Atletico Madrid

It has been reported in recent days that Ronaldo could join Atletico Madrid, which is surprising for a number of reasons.

Firstly, Ronaldo used to play for the Rojiblancos' great rivals Real and has plenty of previous with the club's fans, having most famously mocked them over his superior tally of European Cup wins with a five-fingered salute after a Juve loss at the Wanda Metropolitano a few years back.

Secondly, he would appear wholly unsuited to playing under Diego Simeone, who demands that his team defends from the front.

Thirdly, and far more importantly, Ronaldo's wage demands would represent a significant obstacle to any hopes Atletico may have of signing Real's all-time leading goalscorer.

And yet, in spite of all these hurdles, this is arguably the most feasible transfer – which tells you much about Ronaldo's lack of options right now.

AdvertisementGetty Images8Juventus

Juve's Ronaldo gamble did not pay off. He may have delivered on his end, breaking a succession of scoring records, as well as boosting the Bianconeri brand.

But Ronaldo failed to deliver Juventus a Champions League – or vice versa, depending on your viewpoint.

The net result is that, as already mentioned, the frustrated forward left the club in the lurch, giving them next to no time to find an adequate replacement.

Juve belatedly moved on in January, though, making a massive financial investment on Dusan Vlahovic, whom they believe to be a generational goalscoring talent in the same bracket as Erling Haaland.

Given the Old Lady is now partaking in some serious book-balancing – Paulo Dybala was released in unceremonious circumstances, while Matthijs de Ligt has just been sold to Bayern Munich – there is no chance of Ronaldo returning to Turin.

(C)Getty Images7Paris Saint-Germain

Could a space soon open up on the left-hand side of the PSG attack? Well, as GOAL has already reported, they are willing to listen to offers for Neymar.

However, Neymar is in something of a similar position to Ronaldo: very few sides can actually afford him, given he'd command a massive transfer fee – he only signed a new contract last year until 2025 – and demand a colossal salary.

There's also the fact that the man himself is reluctant to move right now, given he wants to focus solely on Brazil's World Cup campaign.

So, unless there's movement on the Neymar front, it's difficult to see PSG adding another gargantuan pay packet to an already bloated wage bill.

Getty6Barcelona

Barcelona obviously had no issue signing a thirty-something goalscoring phenomenon this summer. It's just that the Catalans wanted Robert Lewandowski instead of Ronaldo.

And they got him, too. They had to mortgage the future of the club to make it happen, of course, but Barca belatedly found a way to sign themselves a superstar striker.

So, even aside from the fact that Ronaldo once revelled in scoring goals against the Blaugrana for former club Real, Xavi is now well-stacked in the attacking department going into the 2022-23 campaign, given Raphinha has also arrived from Leeds, while Ousmane Dembele has extended his stay at Camp Nou.

Barca may be renowned for making nonsensical moves in the transfer market but signing Ronaldo would be ridiculous right now, even for them.

Which records does Cristiano Ronaldo hold? Full list of Portugal star's major achievements

GOAL takes a look at the major records Ronaldo holds for both club and country.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players ever to grace the game of football. In a career spanning more than two decades, the Portuguese superstar has broken numerous records to claim his place amongst the game's legends.

With over 800 career goals and counting, Ronaldo is undoubtedly one of the most lethal marksmen in the history of football. He is the all-time record international goalscorer with 118 strikes, and also boasts of being the all-time leading scorer in the Uefa Champions League (140).

The 38-year-old has numerous other club and country records to his name including the most Champions League appearances (140).

USMNT's leading man Christian Pulisic is finally playing like the potential superstar he promised to be at Borussia Dortmund for AC Milan

Four years after leaving Signal Iduna Park, the American is back for a huge Champions League match as a key player for the Rossoneri

The prodigal son is returning. Well, at least one of them. Borussia Dortmund have had a whole bunch of prodigal sons over the last few years, perhaps more than any other club. Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembele, Jude Bellingham, Jadon Sancho… it's a wild list.

This story, though, is about Christian Pulisic. Once a rising star at Dortmund, now a key figure at AC Milan. And, on Wednesday, Pulisic will return to Signal Iduna Park four years after he initially left the club in search of a next step.

That step came at Chelsea, but it was one full of highs and lows. It was one that produced a Champions League trophy, but it's also one that saw Pulisic's career stop and start more times than he can count. Despite the team's success, Pulisic's career at Chelsea never quite went the way everyone expected it to.

And that leads us here. Now a star with AC Milan, Pulisic is beginning to look like the player many knew he could be when he left Dortmund all those years ago, and he could play a key role as his current and former employers prepare for an absolutely humongous Champions League clash.

Getty ImagesA boy arrives

It feels hard to believe, but it's been nearly nine years since Pulisic first signed with Borussia Dortmund. Much has changed in that time, and that was the aim of it all when Pulisic first moved to Germany at age 16. The goal wasn't to follow the typical path set out for him in American soccer; it was to blaze a new trail and become the new face of the U.S. men's national team.

That process began in Dortmund and, in some ways, it began faster than many could have expected. Less than a year after arriving, Pulisic was tossed into the first team, making his debut after the Bundesliga's winter break. He never looked back from that moment, becoming something of a regular for Dortmund in the coming years.

We know how it all went: 127 appearances, 19 goals and a DFB-Pokal later, Pulisic had proven himself at one of Germany's biggest clubs. He was also beginning to prove himself as an American soccer star, the phoenix to emerge from the ashes of the 2018 World Cup failure to lead a new generation that, ultimately, proved itself in 2022.

In January 2019, though, it was confirmed that Pulisic would be moving on, as he agreed to a deal to move to Chelsea the following summer for a record-breaking £58 million (€64m/$73m) transfer fee. In the process, he became the most expensive American player ever and Dortmund's second-biggest sale, behind only Dembele.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesUps and downs at Chelsea

If there was a word to describe Pulisic's life at Chelsea, and the Blues in general over the last few years, it would be 'inconsistent'. There were highs, of course, especially early on. Brought in to replace Eden Hazard, Pulisic showed glimpses of being able to do just that, notably during the club's run to the 2020-21 Champions League.

Pulisic, however, never locked down a regular spot on the field and, by the end, was buried behind a plethora of other big-money attacking signings. There was never really a period where Pulisic got the consistent run of games needed, whether due to injury, managerial changes or overall Chelsea chaos.

By the end, all involved were ready to move on. Chelsea had spent big on new attackers, and there's no end in sight to that pursuit. Pulisic, meanwhile, clearly needed a fresh start. So, after four seasons, 26 goals and three trophies, Pulisic said goodbye to Stamford Bridge and hello to San Siro.

Getty ImagesLifeline in Milan

By joining Milan, Pulisic didn't have to take a step backwards. No, this was a step sideways and, depending on how you look at it, maybe a step forward.

Milan are in the Champions League, after all. They were semi-finalists last season and Serie A champions the year before. For years, Italy's giants were relatively dormant, but over the last few campaigns, they've shown signs of life.

This summer, with stars like Sandro Tonali and Brahim Diaz on the way out, the club went out and added a few new pieces. Samuel Chukwueze was one, as was Pulisic's USMNT team-mate Yunus Musah. However, the American winger was the big one, signed for a reported €20 million (£17m/$22m). Thus far, that move has looked like a stroke of genius for both Milan and Pulisic.

GettyLife in Italy (so far)

Serie A has been a good landing spot for Pulisic. He scored in his first two appearances, netting against Bologna and Torino in a pair of wins to start the season. There was a bit of a blip after the international break, but Pulisic was back among the goals on Saturday, scoring the opener in a 2-0 win over Lazio.

The goals are good, particularly for a player that will take every chance to boost his confidence after years in and out of the Chelsea XI. But that's just one part of all of this; the other is how he's getting them.

For the first time in a while, Pulisic has been able to bring his USMNT swagger to the club level. He's playing with purpose, not fear, as he continues to create danger for Milan. He already has a relationship with Olivier Giroud from Chelsea, and with Rafael Leao drawing plenty of eyeballs on the other wing, Pulisic has been free to do what he does best. His most recent goal came via a Leao cross, ensuring that he heads into this Champions League reunion in good form.
