This Liverpool star shows why Hodgson axed England’s Old Guard

An impetus on youth is undoubtedly  England’s most visible hallmark for  Brazil 2014.

FA Chief Greg Dyke has created an entire commission specifically to answer the tough questions surrounding home-grown English talents, even suggesting a reconfiguration of the lower leagues and the introduction of ‘B Teams’, and Roy Hodgson has reflected that concern in his squad selection for the tournament, favouring a new breed of young Englishmen over the well-established old guard.

That progressive policy was typified but by no means exclusive to the selection of Luke Shaw over Ashley Cole. Likewise, the England manager overlooked Michael Carrick and Gareth Barry in favour of Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson, and also refused the opportunity to offer John Terry his international swansong.

I still believe that if Hodgon’s life were at stake, Terry and Cole would have both been selected in his World Cup squad. The former was unanimously viewed as the Premier League’s most in-form English defender last season and the latter proved his utility at top level has far from expired with particularly impressive showings against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid in late April.

One could argue, and quite rightly, that an un-dynamic Italy side, limited in its natural pace and penetration going forward, would have been ideal opponents for the Chelsea veterans.

At the same time, taking just five players over the age of 30 to brazil, and only four with 50 or more caps for England, was a huge risk on Hodgson’s part. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana, Ross Barkley, Luke Shaw and Jordan Henderson have all been in proficient domestic form this season, but boasting just 32 appearances for England between them, there was no guarantee that they’d be able to transition their performances to international level.

But the Raheem Sterling’s display against the Azzurri was evidence enough that Hodgson had made the right decision in investing his faith in the Three Lions’ youngest stars at the expense of the old guard.

Many will argue that such praise has come too soon – after all, England’s World Cup fate is now out of our hands after losing to Uruguay Thursday evening. Going out in the group stages would be a huge disappointment, one that could potentially cost Roy Hodgson his job.

But during that 90 minutes against Italy, the Liverpool forward demonstrated everything England have lacked going forward for well over a decade – pace, trickery, intent, but most importantly, confidence and ambition.

England, first and foremost, are and will forever be a direct side. That’s simply the nature of the Premier League; a combination of our country’s philosophical traditions and the division’s entrenched desire to remain the most exciting, complete top flight in world football.

But whilst that trend never translated properly into the former generation – the 40 yard-passes of Steven Gerrard, the target man styles of Andy Carroll and Emile Heskey, the set piece specialities of David Beckham – Sterling gave English directness a whole new meaning against Italy.

For the first time since Joe Cole, in the 19 year-old, England finally have a player prepared to take on opposing defenders, to dare them to commit and entice them into making a mistake. Sterling executed four successful dribbles against the Italians last Saturday, half of the rest of the England team combined and twice as much as our next-best dribbler.

It is not merely a question of the type of player, as I admit, a winger will always be expected to carry the ball more than his team-mates. Rather it is a belief that in taking on defenders one will be successful rather than detrimental to the team. And it’s not just shown in Sterling; Ross Barkley came on to complete two successful dribbles in under half an hour, and that uncharacteristic fluency and confidence in taking on opponents is replicated in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana too.

In a nutshell, they the Three Lions relevance – for more than the last ten years, we’ve appeared distinctly outdated in comparison to European and South American opposition, as if they have somehow evolved further athletically, tactically and technically along the beautiful game’s philosophical spectrum. But Sterling, Barkley, Lallana and company aren’t footballing relics or throwbacks to the game’s past, as one could accuse Steven Gerrard, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Michael Carrick, or even Wayne Rooney, of being.

They are the modern footballer – lightweight, penetrating, skilful and daring – they are everything England have continually suffered without for as long as I can remember. Without our young players, England would be like a World Cup time capsule, echoing an era that the rest of the world has long-moved on from.

Hodgson was right to favour youth over established talent, and regardless of how England finish the tournament – our exit now looks incredibly likely baring a mathematical miracle – he should be rewarded rather than punished for taking a gamble that will undoubtedly have a positive effect on our national game for the many years to come.

Surprise return on cards for former Fulham favourite

Fulham are interested in signing Clint Dempsey on loan, according to the Daily Star.

The American left the Premier League for Seattle Sounders in the summer, but will have a 3 month break between December and March during the MLS off-season.

And former club Fulham, where Dempsey spent 6 seasons, want to bring the striker back to Craven Cottage on a loan deal. Similar moves have happened with MLS players in the past, with Robbie Keane, David Beckham and Thierry Henry all spending the off-season on loan at European clubs in the past.

Dempsey scored 50 league goals for the Whites during his time in England, before joining Tottenham on the 2012 summer transfer deadline day. The American looked set to move to Liverpool, only for Spurs to have a higher bid accepted by Fulham.

But with Martin Jol’s side struggling to win games in the Premier League, after losing their 6th game of the season already, 3-1 at home to Manchester United, the London club could look to bring the USA international back to the Cottage to try and boost their side.

The two time Fulham player of the season turned 30 earlier this year, and could join an already experienced Fulham squad that are struggling to earn points in the league this season. But the return of a fans favourite could boost the team, and supporters’ moods.

Would you want to see Dempsey back in a Fulham shirt?

Mawoyo eyes Test return against Pakistan

Tino Mawoyo, the Zimbabwe opening batsman, has been working toward his return for the Tests against Pakistan after five months out of cricket recovering from groin surgery

Firdose Moonda01-Sep-2013

Tino Mawoyo: ‘I know that I haven’t had many match situations recently but I played in the inter-squad two-day match we had and I hope I will get my place back in the team’•AFP

When Zimbabwe last played a Test, opening batsman Tino Mawoyo could only watch from the sidelines. He was nursing a severe groin injury, awaiting a hospital date and commentating on Zimbabwe’s performances and what Mawoyo saw concerned him.Although Zimbabwe had solid contributions with the bat from Brendan Taylor and Hamilton Masakadza, they lacked a dependable opening pair. The highest first-wicket partnership was 36, scored by Vusi Sibanda and Regis Chakabva in the second innings of the second Test. Those same two players had put on 23 in the first innings. Sibanda and Timysen Maruma were even less successful at the top, managing only 10 and seven in the first Test, which would explain why Maruma was dropped.Mawoyo is careful not consider himself Zimbabwe’s saviour but judging from the performances against Bangladesh, a batsman in his mould is exactly what they were missing. And now, they could have him back. He has successfully healed from the groin surgery he underwent in Johannesburg on May 22 and despite five months out of action, has been hard at work to ensure he is ready to return.”I’ve had a lot of one-on-one sessions with Grant Flower,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I know that I haven’t had many match situations recently but I also played in the inter-squad two-day match we had and I hope I will get my place back in the team, especially because it will be against a side I have done well against.”If Zimbabwe’s think-tank relies on history, they will recall Mawoyo without hesitation. In just his second Test, he scored an accomplished, undefeated 163 against Pakistan and demonstrated temperament which eluded his team-mates. He was also the only Zimbabwean batsmen who handled the spin threat of Saeed Ajmal with absolute assurance.”He is just a wizard; he can turn the ball on glass,” Mawoyo said of Ajmal. “And we know he’ll be coming at us again but he is also not the only bowler we need to concentrate on.”Although Ajmal remains the main threat, Mawoyo has also been preparing for Abdur Rehman, who he thinks could have as much of an impact on the series, although he hopes conditions can negate both of them. “I don’t think the wickets will take as much as turn as, for example, what we played on in the West Indies,” he said. “It will probably move around quite a bit in the morning in Harare and even Bulawayo, we’ve heard won’t be as dry as normal.”Zimbabwe were, in the words of assistant coach Stephen Mangongo, “embarrassed,” by slower bowlers in the West Indies, where their inability to combine footwork with finesse was sorely exposed.Mawoyo, who last played on that tour, believes Zimbabwe have progressed from then. “We had a few issues then and we wanted to go forward. I think we’ve learned a lot. Winning the ODI was a big confidence booster. It was very encouraging to see the guys bat for longer periods.”Patience is the hallmark of Mawoyo’s game so he was heartened to see others in his team willing to employ the same mindset. Coach Andy Waller was in agreement. “The guys know they can go out and score runs against Pakistan,” he said, after the final one-dayer. “There’s a bit of confidence and self-belief.”No-one knows that better than Mawoyo, although he also knows being able to do something once does not guarantee one can do it again, unless the requisite determination and commitment is there. “I think we can do well in the Tests and I think I can do well but it’s not like I am going to be starting on 100 again. When I walk out there, I will be on nought, we all will and we’ve just got to show what we can do.”

'Would be nice if Lorgat apologises' – Dalmiya

More than six weeks after Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat offered to “apologise” to anyone who he had offended in the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya, the interim BCCI chief, has welcomed Lorgat’s offer

More than six weeks after Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat offered to “apologise” to anyone who he had offended in the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya, the interim BCCI chief, has welcomed Lorgat’s offer.”Lorgat is a nice gentleman but it would be nice of him if he apologises,” Dalmiya said in Kolkata, when asked about his reaction to Lorgat’s offer that was made immediately after he was appointed the CSA chief executive despite the BCCI raising its objections. While this may appear as softening of the BCCI’s stand with Lorgat, the deadlock over the BCCI going to trim what was till a few days ago a tour of three Tests, seven ODIs and two Twenty20s, prevailed for another day. While Dalmiya reiterated what the BCCI president N Srinivasan had said three days ago that “the tour is on”, there was no formal exchange between representatives of the two boards. Even though Srinivasan, board secretary Sanjay Patel and treasurer Ravi Savant were together for most of the day along with other key executives at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, it was understood that the South Africa tour itinerary “wasn’t even mentioned” in their discussions.”The sole purpose of the meeting was to proof read and sign the annual report before it goes for printing ahead of the AGM,” said an insider who was a part of the proceedings.Across the continent, CSA indicated it would send out a release on Wednesday afternoon to reassure the fans and thank them for their support, but later said they would “try for tomorrow”. Officials contacted at various franchises said they had no knowledge of any progress on the BCCI-CSA issue and were awaiting further instructions, although many of them expressed concern over a curtailed tour.It appears that unless CSA accedes to the cricket bosses in India, the situation is unlikely to change. At least till the BCCI AGM on September 29.

-Estou fazendo meu trabalho e estou tranquilo.
