West Ham had a mare with Andy Carroll

West Ham United have certainly had a chequered history when it comes to recruitment in the GSB era – particularly with regards to centre-forwards – with a whole host of additions having failed to make the grade in east London in recent times.

One of the more high-profile, unsuccessful recruits of the last decade was that of Andy Carroll, with the 6-foot-4 marksman having endured an injury-hit seven-year stay with the Hammers after initially joining on loan from Liverpool in 2012.

The Reds had been keen to offload the Englishman after just 18 months at Anfield, having previously been signed for a sizeable £35m fee from Newcastle United on deadline day back in January 2011.

With credit still in the bank from his time at St James’ Park – where he had scored 17 goals in the second tier during the 2009/10 season – Sam Allardyce no doubt believed he could help revive the forward’s fortunes upon his move to the Irons.

A promising 2012/13 season saw the nine-cap England international net seven Premier League goals in his debut campaign in the capital, with West Ham subsequently forking out £15m to sign him on a permanent deal.

That decision no doubt backfired as he struggled for both form and fitness over the next few years, failing to ever reach double figures for goals in any of his seven seasons in a claret and blue jersey.

His best return of nine league goals came during the 2016/17 season under Slaven Bilic, with the Gateshead-born powerhouse notably netting a sensational overhead kick in a victory over Crystal Palace in that campaign.

Such a staggering, acrobatic effort proved just how “unplayable” he could be at his best – as lauded by teammate Aaron Cresswell – albeit with the forward never managing to stay fit for long enough to deliver the goods on a consistent basis.

Dogged by injuries throughout his time at the club – particularly in the final few years – Carroll was restricted to just 16 and 12 league outings respectively in his final two seasons at the London Stadium, before finally departing on a free transfer in 2019.

Losing the striker for nothing represented a notable loss from the Hammers’ initial investment, albeit the club were likely no doubt happy to have him off the books, with his form since that departure having vindicated their decision to let him leave.

A subsequent return to the North East saw the £540k-rated man score just once in two seasons with Tynesiders, while last term saw the 33-year-old net just five league goals in the Championship across spells at Reading and West Bromwich Albion.

Now without a club, it has been a rather dismal decade for the once-promising talent, with the Irons no doubt regretting their decision to have invested so heavily in him all those years ago.

Leeds must unleash Sonny Perkins

Rodrigo enjoyed a stunning start to the 2022/23 campaign for Leeds United as he grasped his opportunity to lead the line for Jesse Marsch in the Premier League.

He has scored four goals and created two ‘big chances’ for his teammates in five top-flight outings for the Whites this season, playing as a number 10 and as a striker during that time.

The Spaniard then suffered a shoulder injury in the draw with Everton and Marsch admitted that he could be out for a week or two months, depending on the severity of the blow.

He missed the 5-2 defeat to Brentford and it now remains to be seen how long he will be out of action for, which opens the door for someone else to step up at the top end of the pitch.

Marsch must now unleash summer signing Sonny Perkins to see if he is ready to make the step up to playing regular football in the Premier League.

The 18-year-old joined the club from West Ham in the summer and has hit the ground running in Yorkshire, scoring five goals in four games for the under-21’s.

A private coach, Harry Brooks, hailed the youngster’s talent earlier this year, saying:

“He’s got incredible feet. Really smooth, he’s creative, as a ball striker, he’s probably the best ball striker I’ve ever worked with. Happy off both feet and a real natural footballer where you want him to get on the ball as often as he can.

“As a character he’s fantastic. He’s got magic, intelligence, football ability – not many players have magic nowadays, he certainly does. And yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing the season he’s gonna have.”

This suggests that he has a special gift on the ball and that he is clinical in front of goal, which is backed up by his statistics for the Whites and during his time at West Ham.

Perkins joined Leeds after enjoying a fine 2021/22 campaign with the Hammers. He scored 12 goals in 21 Premier League 2 outings and made his top-flight and Europa League debuts for David Moyes’ side.

The young attacker, who can play in a multitude of forward roles, has shown that he is a consistent, lethal, goalscorer at youth level and he now deserves an opportunity to show what he can do in the first-team.

Rodrigo’s injury has presented Marsch with a chance to experiment at the top end of the pitch and he must now unleash Perkins to see if he can translate his stunning strike rate in the academy to the Premier League.

West Ham: PGMOL accept VAR interventions were wrong

PGMOL, the refereeing body in English football, has accepted that the VAR intervention to deny West Ham United an equaliser against Chelsea was wrong, according to The Times’ chief sports reporter Martyn Ziegler.

The Lowdown:  Cornet’s disallowed goal

On Saturday, the Hammers travelled to Stamford Bridge for their latest Premier League clash against the Blues.

After the Irons went in front through Michail Antonio in the 62nd minute, Ben Chilwell tied the scores with less than 15 minutes to go before Kai Havertz bagged an 88th-minute winner.

However, just moments after Chelsea’s second goal, West Ham summer signing Maxwel Cornet thought he had struck an equaliser, pouncing on a mix-up between Reece James and Edouard Mendy.

Referee Andy Madley was sent to the monitor by VAR official Jarred Gillet to have another look at the goal for an apparent challenge on the Blues goalkeeper by Jarrod Bowen, with the goal consequently being disallowed.

The Latest: PGMOL admit to VAR mistake

With West Ham manager David Moyes and captain Declan Rice having vented their frustrations with the decision, the east London club asked the Premier League to provide clarification over the ruling.

Ziegler has now learnt of PGMOL’s findings, with the refereeing body admitting that a mistake had been made regarding Cornet’s overturned goal and resolving to learn from the controversy.

Taking to Twitter, the reliable journalist claimed: “NEW: PGMOL is understood to have effectively accepted the VAR interventions to disallow West Ham + Newcastle goals were wrong. Will co-operate with PL request to review the 2 incidents, + will take lessons from the outcome.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates-2/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Every point counts

With the 2-1 loss a disappointing result for Moyes given his team’s hard-fought battle against Chelsea, West Ham now sit 18th in the Premier League table, having gained just four points from their opening six games.

However, a point at the weekend would have kept them out of the relegation zone, as the Irons would then have ended the matchday in 16th place.

Whilst this doesn’t seem like the be-all and end-all of the campaign with 32 games still to go, every point counts towards the end of the season; especially in the Hammers’ case, as they would expect to be pushing for a strong European finish.

Therefore, with such mistakes being made by referees in the top flight, fair and accurate results seem a long way off, with West Ham the latest victims in a series of damaging decisions made in the Premier League over a hugely controversial weekend.

Healy, Perry seal all-time classic for Australia

Australia achieved the highest successful chase in women’s ODIs

Shashank Kishore12-Oct-20253:54

Review: Healy was Australia’s bedrock

Alyssa Healy’s epic 142 powered Australia to the highest successful chase in women’s ODI history, leaving a packed Visakhapatnam stadium thinning very quickly towards the close as World Cup hosts India suffered a second successive heartbreak. Two nights after failing to defend 252 against South Africa, India’s decision to play just the five specialist bowlers will be debated long and hard after they were unable to work with a total of 330. Australia won with six balls to spare, and three wickets in hand; Ellyse Perry hoisting her WPL team-mate Sneh Rana down the ground to seal victory.Perry, who remained unbeaten on 47, had suffered a bout of cramps that forced her to retire hurt with Australia cruising at 154 for 1. Then she returned at the fall of Ash Gardner’s wicket with Australia needing 32 off 36. When Amanjot Kaur had Sophie Molineux lbw at the start of the 46th over, Australia were seven down. This is when Kim Garth joined forces with Perry to put on 28 crucial runs off 23 balls to see Australia home. Garth finished unbeaten on 14, including a superbly executed reverse-paddle off Rana in the penultimate over with Australia needing 13 off 11. The win, Australia’s third in four games, puts them on top of the table halfway through the World Cup.Ellyse Perry and Kim Garth walk off after Australia sealed the highest chase in women’s ODI history•Getty Images

India were eventually left to rue the seven balls they didn’t play after a late and sensational collapse – they lost 9 for 138 in the last 30 overs to finish with 330 when they looked set to scale 350. Unlike Australia, who had Healy go on to convert her start into a maiden century as captain, and third in a World Cup, India were left waiting for their big innings, with both Smriti Mandhana (80) and Pratika Rawal (75) falling short of three-figures.Except left-arm spinner N Shree Charani, who displayed terrific control to put the brakes on Australia with figures of 3 for 41, the others wilted against Healy’s assault in trying conditions. Shree Charani bowled out in the 39th over, by which time Australia’s required rate was a-run-a-ball.It didn’t help that Kranti Gaud, full of bristling promise, had a second off day, conceding 73 in nine wicketless overs, while Sneh Rana, one of India’s form bowlers, went for 85 from her full quota. The make-up of India’s attack meant Harmanpreet Kaur had few alternatives on what was among the best batting surfaces of the tournament.Australia began cautiously, scoring just 25 off the first five overs before switching gears to ransack 57 in the next five. Healy’s fast hands were on display as she took 18 off Gaud’s fourth over, while Phoebe Lichfield cracked three consecutive boundaries off Amanjot Kaur before a missed stumping chance briefly spared her. India didn’t have to wait long, though, as Litchfield fell reverse-sweeping Shree Charani to Rana at point to end an 85-run opening stand off just 11.2 overs.Smriti Mandhana made 80 off 66•Getty Images

From overs 6.6 to 10 alone, Australia hammered eight fours and two sixes, most from Healy, who dismantled India’s spinners with sweeps to every part of the leg side. Perry, scratchy early on, found rhythm alongside her, even resorting to reverse sweeps to unsettle Rana. Their fifty stand came in 55 balls, but India sensed an opening when Perry retired hurt and Beth Mooney and Annabel Sutherland, who celebrated her birthday earlier in the day with a five-for, fell in quick succession.Healy briefly reined herself in before surging to a brilliant century off 84 balls, managing the chase almost single-handedly despite struggling with cramps. Her dismissal, caught off a sliced drive to point was adjudged clean after a tight review where stand-in third umpire Kim Cotton looked in two minds. When she finally felt Rana’s hands were underneath the ball, it ended a stunning innings that comprised 21 fours and three sixes. It gave India a fleeting lift, but Perry’s return and Garth’s composure soon quashed any hopes of a late twist.India would look back on their batting performance with mixed emotions. They displayed the kind of sustained aggression they’ve long spoken about but rarely executed, yet the recurring collapses would be worrisome for the team management. From 192 for 1 at the 30-over mark, they looked set for 350-plus but fell woefully short, as they failed to capitalise on a superb 155-run opening stand between Mandhana and Rawal.India have lost two matches in a row now at the 2025 World Cup•Getty Images

After three ordinary outings, Mandhana returned to her fluent self, reaching fifty off 46 balls. Her six off Molineux made her the first woman to score 1000 or more ODI runs in a calendar year, and she later became the fastest to 5000 runs in the format. While Mandhana took on Molineux, Rawal targeted Gardner, though their partnership was interspersed with spells of caution – like the passage that produced just 15 in five overs after they finished the powerplay at 58 for 0.This was largely down to Rawal’s cautiousness. That forced Mandhana to take more risks, producing audacious shots like a ramp over Healy’s head. Rawal’s 69-ball half-century helped post the second-highest World Cup partnership by any side against Australia before Mandhana fell for 80.Harleen Deol (38), Harmanpreet (22) and Jemimah Rodrigues (33) injected urgency unseen so far in this tournament but couldn’t convert their starts. The burden of providing the late surge yet again fell on Richa Ghosh, whose 94 against South Africa had bailed India out earlier. Here, though, a Sutherland slower ball undid her, triggering a collapse from 309 for 6 to 330 all out.Sutherland’s clever changes of pace and length earned her a maiden ODI five-for and throttled India’s momentum, leaving them disappointed at not making the most of the platform they had built so well. The loss now leaves India without a win against South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia at a World Cup (50 overs and T20 included) for five years now. And with England up next in a week in Indore, they’ll need to regroup quickly to keep pushing for the semi-finals.

Six-wicket return from Abbas puts Notts in command

Second half-centuries in the match for Ben Slater and Joe Clarke keep them there

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay24-May-2025

Mohammad Abbas was in the wickets again•Getty Images

A superb six-wicket return from Mohammad Abbas and second half-centuries in the match for Ben Slater and Joe Clarke helped Division One leaders Nottinghamshire seize control of this Rothesay County Championship clash with Yorkshire on day two at Headingley.Pakistani Test seamer Abbas was the chief protagonist with 6 for 45 from 17.3 overs – four of his wickets coming either side of lunch to secure a 49th career first-class haul of five wickets or more – as Yorkshire were bowled out for 159 in reply to a first-innings 228.Former England batter Dawid Malan impressed with a counter-attacking 64 off 45 balls as second-bottom Yorkshire, who started the day on 10 for 2, lost regular wickets. But it wasn’t enough. From early afternoon onwards, Nottinghamshire’s pursuit of a fourth win gathered even more steam, with opener Slater top-scoring with 78 off 125 balls in 227 for 3 from 61 overs, a lead of 296. Clarke provided important support with a fluent unbeaten 72 not out off 92.Left-handed Slater bettered his opening day 52 and shared half-century partnerships with Haseeb Hameed and Clarke, who top-scored with 64 in the first innings. As 35-year-old Abbas claimed his second haul of five wickets or more in three matches for Notts this season, it meant Yorkshire have now only posted first-innings totals of 250 or more on three occasions in seven matches in 2025.They have a mountain to climb to avoid a fourth defeat in seven games this season.Nottinghamshire captain Hameed shared 73 inside 16 overs for the first wicket with Slater in their second innings to more than double a commanding lead of 69. Hameed’s 33 was confidently compiled on a largely gloomy Leeds day.Just as Yorkshire will have been frustrated with their efforts with the bat, they would have been with the ball too. Conditions remained helpful for the seamers, but they failed to apply any pressure.Hameed was caught behind off a beauty from Jordan Thompson which bounced and nipped away before Freddie McCann was unlucky to have been given caught behind off Ben Coad for 15 shortly before tea with the score on 113 for 2, a lead of 179.But Slater, who was eye-catching on the drive, continued. He reached a well-paced fifty off 68 balls and shared 70 for the third wicket with Clarke before edging behind one which nipped away from Matthew Revis’s seam.Clarke went on to reach his fifty off 55 balls and shared a day-ending unbroken 54 partnership for the fourth wicket with Jack Haynes, 13.Earlier, Yorkshire reached lunch at 119 for 7, with seamers Dillon Pennington and Brett Hutton striking twice apiece and 35-year-old Abbas once as Notts strengthened their grip.En-route, they had to survive a counter-attacking half-century from Malan, who played a series of eye-catching shots and made it look like he was batting on a featherbed pitch.Malan drove imperiously and hoisted his quartet of sixes over the leg-side, reaching his fifty off only 34 balls upon his return to the side following three games out with a groin injury. After the early departure of James Wharton – caught at first slip off Pennington, 15 for 4 – Malan shared 37 for the fifth wicket with nightwatchman Jack White, who chanced his arm for 18 before he also edged Pennington into the slips.Hutton had Harry Duke caught behind and Malan lbw playing to leg, and when Abbas claimed his first wicket of the day by rocking back George Hill’s middle stump with one which kept low and jagged back, Yorkshire were 107 for 7 in the 34th over of the innings. After lunch, Abbas claimed his fourth and fifth wickets in successive balls as Yorkshire slipped to 124 for nine. Captain Dom Bess edged to fourth slip and Thompson to first.Revis, with 27, and Coad shared 35 for the last wicket, but it was only brief respite as the former dragged on to Abbas, leaving the visitors with all but two sessions of batting to do through to close. They did it expertly.

Rangers looking at "outstanding" English coach who's better than Gerrard

When will Rangers unveil their new manager at Ibrox?

On Saturday, the Gers concluded their generally miserable campaign at Easter Road, held to a 2-2 draw, with top-scorer Cyriel Dessers and Rangers Player of the Season Nicolas Raskin on target in Edinburgh.

As Scottish Premiership runners-up, the Light Blues will start next season early with a Champions League second qualifying round tie on 22 or 23 July, currently projected to face one of Brann from Norway, Swiss side Servette or Austria Vienna.

Thus, with that first leg a mere 62 days away already, 49ers Enterprises are under pressure to appoint a new Rangers manager very quickly, so who is on their shortlist?

Rangers' new manager search

According to a report by Sky Sports News, six men are ‘under consideration’ to become the new Rangers manager.

They are: Steven Gerrard, Davide Ancelotti, Russell Martin, Rob Edwards, Danny Röhl and Gary O’Neil.

Ever since it was confirmed that his father, Carlo, will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, becoming the new Brazil manager, it has been widely reported, including by Madrid-based outlet AS, that Davide is one of the front-runners to land the Rangers job.

Meantime, Gerrard remains one of the leading candidates too, with Mike McGrath of the Telegraph documenting how the 49ers have held a longstanding interest in bringing the Englishman back to Ibrox.

Of the six names mentioned, only Röhl is currently employed by a club, and he is ‘considering’ leaving Sheffield Wednesday, as reported by David Ornstein of the Athletic, but Rangers should not go for him, nor Gerrard nor Ancelotti, with another member of the short list making the most sense.

Who Rangers should appoint as their new manager

Rob Edwards may be a name unfamiliar to a large majority of the Rangers support, but he could be an excellent appointment.

Let’s have a look at the 42-year-old’s senior managerial career so far.

Edwards’ biggest career achievement to date is, without question, leading Luton Town into the Premier League which was a miraculous achievement.

The Hatters were relegated after one season in the top-flight, before Edwards departed by mutual consent back in January of this year, with the club actually going on to suffer a second successive relegation, now finding themselves in EFL League One.

Nevertheless, this should take away from Edwards’ impact at Kenilworth Road, with journalist James Cunliffe noting that he did an “outstanding” job at Luton, while Mark Ogden of ESPN praises his “ultra-positive” style of play, something that would no doubt go down well with those at Ibrox.

Meantime, Exeter City midfielder Edward Francis, who played for Edwards at youth level, praised his exceptional “man-management” and “communication skills”, adding “he always treats people well and is honest with them”.

So, Edwards is clearly a young manager on the up, which is in contrast to Gerrard.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

The 44-year-old’s time at Aston Villa was disastrous, as documented by Gregg Evans of the Athletic, while he was then also sacked by Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq back in January following an underwhelming 18-month stint in the Middle East.

So, Gerrard’s last two managerial jobs do not suggest he is the right man for the Ibrox dugout, although he was successful during his first stint in Govan, delivering the club’s first Premiership title for a decade, historically ending Celtic’s quest for ten-in-a-row.

So, reappointing Gerrard would probably be the safe option, as he is a known quantity in Glasgow, but the 49ers should be braver and hire an up-and-coming coach with the potential to get even better, and Edwards certainly fits that bill.

Rangers can forget Ancelotti by hiring manager who's a "joy to watch"

Rangers must move on from Davide Ancelotti to appoint this British head coach.
