Usman Khawaja and Alex Doolan will have the perfect chance to push their claims to become Ricky Ponting’s Test replacement after being named in the Chairman’s XI squad to take on Sri Lanka in Canberra next week. Khawaja will captain the side for the three-day game and while most members of the team are younger players who have been rewarded for some early-season form, all eyes will be on Khawaja and Doolan.Cricket Australia emphasised that the squad was chosen before Ponting made his decision to retire from international cricket, meaning the match is not intended as a bat-off for Test selection. Phillip Hughes is also a strong contender to take Ponting’s place, although it would require a reshuffle in the Test batting order, but for Khawaja especially runs against the Sri Lankans would be a case of perfect timing.Khawaja, 25, is third on the Sheffield Shield run tally this summer with 438 runs at 39.81 and his century in extremely difficult conditions in Hobart earlier this month was especially impressive. Doolan, 27, appears an outside chance at best of earning a Test call-up but a hundred against the Sri Lankans to add to his unbeaten 161 against South Africa for Australia A would form a compelling case, in addition to his 409 Shield runs at 58.42.”It is a talented team that has an ideal mix of youth and experience,” the national selector John Inverarity said. “Usman Khawaja has been nominated as captain. He, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Doolan and Scott Henry have been released from their BBL franchises to take this opportunity to further their experience in the longer form of the game.”They are players who have shown some excellent form in recent months and will be looking to enhance their claims for higher honours. Dean Solway from the ACT is a talented young batsman who will be keen to impress on his home turf.Scott Henry, Marcus Harris, Travis Head and Sam Whiteman are young left-handed batsmen. Each has produced at least one outstanding first-class innings recently and Whiteman will be given an opportunity to display his skills as an accomplished wicket-keeper. Luke Butterworth is an experienced medium-fast swing bowler who bowls with great accuracy and will provide great stability to the attack.”The match is Sri Lanka’s only warm-up ahead of the first Test, which starts in Hobart on December 14. The CA Chairman’s XI take on Sri Lanka from December 6 to 8 at Manuka Oval in Canberra.CA Chairman’s XI Marcus Harris, Scott Henry, Usman Khawaja (capt), Alex Doolan, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Sam Whiteman (wk), Luke Butterworth, Chadd Sayers, Matthew Gale, Ashton Turner, Dean Solway.

Patel leads Notts sunny cruise

Nottinghamshire maintained their push for the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with a straightforward 88-run victory over Scotland at Trent Bridge.

ScorecardNottinghamshire maintained their push for the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with a straightforward 88-run victory over Scotland at Trent Bridge.Samit Patel led the way for the hosts with 82, while fellow England hopeful James Taylor contributed 68 and Adam Voges an unbeaten 64 as Nottinghamshire made 265 for 5 after winning the toss and batting first. Patel then picked up 2 for 39 with his left-arm spin as Scotland were bowled out for 177, with fellow spinners Voges, 3 for 37, and Graeme White, three for 42 also among the wickets. Ryan Flannigan top-scored for the visitors with 38.The win moves Nottinghamshire second in Group B, one point behind leaders Hampshire, who have played a game more.Having won the toss on a gloriously sunny afternoon, Nottinghamshire skipper Chris Read chose to bat first on a wicket that had seen little action from their rain-affected County Championship match with Surrey on the previous four days. The decision looked like a mistake when Gordon Goudie had Michael Lumb lbw with the first ball of the match, but despite a low and slow pitch, the home side steadily increased the tempo to finish on a score that proved well beyond the visitors.Taylor and Alex Hales put on 82 in 12 overs for the second wicket, with Hales contributing 37 from 35 balls before he was stumped off the left-arm spin of Jean Symes.Patel took his time to get going – with Nottinghamshire having a 10-over spell in the middle of their innings without a boundary – before he drove Majid Haq through the covers to release the shackles. His partner Taylor was generally content to pick up singles in his 82-ball innings, ending when he top-edged an attempted reverse-sweep off Haq to backward point. That brought Voges to the wicket, with the Australian taking advantage of the batting powerplay to race to 50 off just 35 balls in the penultimate over after Patel was yorked by Goudie, who also had Riki Wessels caught at deep square leg.Scotland were never in the hunt but also did not help themselves with two run-outs, although Josh Davey was unlucky to see Harry Gurney deflect Calum MacLeod’s drive onto the stumps at the bowler’s end.Nottinghamshire overcame the setback of seeing seamer Darren Pattinson limp off the field after only two deliveries with a suspected groin strain, and the left-arm spin trio of Patel, Voges and White strangled the life out of the Scottish innings.

Apito final dá início à confusão generalizada no Beira-Rio

Anderson aims for 400 Test wickets

England fast bowler James Anderson has his sights on 400 Test wickets, a mark he said he could reach in around two years as long as he remains fit

Alison’s Tea Break: Anderson aims for 400

England fast bowler James Anderson has his sights on taking 400 Test wickets, a milestone he said he could reach in around two years as long as he remains fit.Anderson, currently with 329 Test wickets, is second on England’s all-time wicket-takers list, behind Ian Botham (383).”Just 71 more! I don’t know. I’d like to think if I can stay fit, then I can do it,” Anderson said to Alison Mitchell on her Tea Break series on ESPNcricinfo. “Because if I’m still playing in a couple of years’ time, I’ve got to keep taking wickets to stay in the team. At the moment I’m really enjoying playing and being part of a successful team. That’s what makes me happy and why I keep getting out of bed.”Anderson said being second on England’s all-time list was “surreal”. “Even when I started my international career I didn’t think I’d get anywhere near that number of wickets, so being second on the list is still quite hard to believe.”Part of his success, Anderson said, he owes to David Saker, England’s bowling coach. “There are still occasions when I need some technical advice. He’s great at that too. Working out a batsman is something I’ve always enjoyed, and I think I’m fairly good at working out someone when I’m out there on the field, but I think actually planning and looking at video footage of people – that’s an area that’s got better over the years and he’s great at that.”Anderson gestures to David Saker on the balcony at Trent Bridge after taking his advice to dismiss Chris Rogers with a cutter•Getty Images

Giving an example of when Saker’s input had an immediate impact on his wickets tally, Anderson talked about a session break in the 2013 Trent Bridge Ashes Test, when Saker suggested bowling cutters to Chris Rogers. “The first cutter I bowled at Rogers, he chipped at midwicket. I think he [Saker] once had a slip of the tongue and said, ‘The bowlers are just putting his plans into place!’ He should take a lot of credit because he’s done a great job with us, but it is so satisfying when a plan comes off straight away.”Anderson is one of the most complete fast bowlers in the game today. He bowls conventional swing and seam, and has also had great success with reverse swing, which he learnt on the dry wickets of Old Trafford, early in his career. But to achieve reverse swing, a bowler needs help from his fielders to “keep the ball in the right condition”. Anderson said it took the England team some time to get a workable system going. “If you do one thing slightly wrong, it can take it another six overs to get it reversing. If you see us throwing it around the field it’ll be straight from one person to another.”We’ve got three people who look after it and the rest have to keep their hands off it. Obviously people have to field the ball so they’ve got to keep their hands dry as well. You’ll see us in Sri Lanka, where everyone had towels in their trousers and so on. One problem is Matt Prior, because he is dripping wet the whole time.”
