'The guy who approached me was very honest'

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jul-2012″I actually enjoyed his company,” says Paul Nixon, the former England wicketkeeper, of the man who offered him millions of pounds to fix a match for Leicestershire.Nixon is one of the most idiosyncratic English cricket characters of this or any other age and in his new autobiography, , he discusses match-fixing openly – but doesn’t name the person who offered the cash. “The guy who approached me, we got on really well,” he tells Jarrod Kimber in the Cricket Sadist Hour. “He was actually a very honest and straight bloke with me.”The second and more ominous reason for Nixon not revealing his name is because of the fear of retribution. “When there’s enormous money being thrown around, you don’t know who’s in control of that money.”Nixon has tried to be as honest as possible about the dark side of cricket, but still holds back some information that he believes could harm his family. He refers to the “mysterious deaths” of Bob Woolmer and Hansie Cronje as a reason not to disclose everything he knows. In the interview Nixon also reveals how tight Cronje, a former team-mate, was: “He ate McDonalds and fast food, because it was cheap.” Although there were some attacking declarations when Cronje played, Nixon never suspected him of anything like match-fixing. “It was never talked about, because match-fixing didn’t exist,” he says.Nixon chats about some more bizarre issues, like the little man who sledges in his ear with negativity, his dyslexia and, perhaps most odd, a séance that he was involved in with Darren Maddy, Darren Stevens and Brad Hodge. Nixon claims that they contacted Ben Hollioake, the England allrounder who died in a car accident aged 24, during a rain-affected match day in a spooky Durham hotel, saying, “At one stage in the séance, all of us were in tears.”

Bell and Clarke see Warwickshire home

Ian Bell underlined his return to form with his second match-winning innings within a week as he helped Warwickshire to a six-wicket win over Northamptonshire

06-May-2012
ScorecardIan Bell underlined his return to form with his second match-winning innings within a week as he helped Warwickshire to a six-wicket win over Northamptonshire.Bell, who lost his place in England’s ODI squad over the winter, struck an unbeaten 82 to help Warwickshire to victory in their opening Clydesdale Bank 40 match of the season at Edgbaston.Bell found form ahead of the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s with a century against Durham in the County Championship last week and maintained it with another unflustered innings as his side made 212 for 4 in reply to Northamptonshire’s 209 for 7. England colleague Jonathan Trott could make only 10.The pitch was the same one that was used for the Durham match, but it had lost much of its pace and suited the spinners.Bell, though, nursed Warwickshire through a difficult period in which they lost three wickets to Northamptonshire spinners James Middlebrook and Con de Lange to guide Warwickshire to victory with 15 balls to spare in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 103 in 13 overs with Rikki Clarke, who made an unbeaten 54.Bell, who insists he wants to recapture an England place in all formats of the game, completed a calm half-century from 62 balls with four fours and then launched left-armer David Willey for six high over long-on. Clarke rattled to his half-century from just 43 balls before he clipped Andrew Hall off his legs for the winning runs and his seventh boundary.Northamptonshire’s total, which was based around a busy 52 from captain Hall, was competitive but they lost wickets at crucial times and their only partnership of substance was 48 for the fifth wicket between Hall and Stephen Peters.Scotland international Kyle Coetzer made a breezy 44 which included a six and six fours, but the innings lost impetus after he got a leading edge to extra cover off Keith Barker.Barker, who took a wicket with his first ball when Alex Wakely chopped on, finished with three for 41 and helped to tie down the middle order with New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel, who conceded only 24 in his eight overs.Peters helped his captain revive the innings, but he was bowled driving at Andy Miller when well set which left Hall to provide the late acceleration. Hall struck just two fours and pulled a short ball from Clarke for six as he reached a half century from 53 balls.Northamptonshire struck an early blow when Trott drove Chaminda Vaas low to Willey at point but Bell and Varun Chopra laid the platform for victory with a second-wicket stand of 57 before Chopra was taken down the leg side by Niall O’Brien off Middlebrook.De Lange took his first wickets in county cricket when William Porterfield was caught behind cutting out of the rough and Jim Troughton clipped to midwicket, but Bell and Clarke accelerated when the seamers returned to see their side home.

Com a vantagem, o Atlético-GO administrou boa parte do segundo tempo. Com a saída de Tiago Real, a Ponte perdeu força ofensiva e não criava com qualidade. Assim, a partida ficou morna a maior parte.

JKCA members demand chairman's removal

Members of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association working committee have called for the resignation of the current chairman

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Mar-2012Members of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association working committee have called for the resignation of the current chairman, Muhammad Aslam Goni, and for fresh elections to be held by the end of next month in the wake of alleged financial scam that was uncovered earlier this month. On March 10 the police registered a case filed by association chairman Muhammad Aslam Goni against general secretary – and former treasurer – Ahsan Mirza and chief administrative officer Mohammad Saleem Khan for allegedly opening and operating bogus association bank accounts into which money received from the BCCI had been siphoned off.On Wednesday, a substantial majority of the 62 working committee members of the JKCA demanded that Goni resign. “He has mismanaged the affairs of the association and is even misleading [association president] Farooq Abdullah,” Mehboob Iqbal, a former chairman of the association said. We demand stern action against those office bearers against whom the association has lodged an FIR against.”Coupled with the chairman’s removal, the members also demanded that the existing management committee be dissolved and new elections held so that an independent inquiry into the alleged scam could held. However, while some of the members wanted India’s investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, to examine the case, others preferred an internal inquiry into the matter.Abdullah, who is also the chairman of the BCCI’s marketing sub-committee and a member of the country’s central government, had been dragged into the dispute when the Jammu & Kashmir bank produced a document showing he had authorised a loan worth Rs 1.91 crores to Mirza in 2008. While Abdullah confirmed to television channel Times Now on March 12 that a case has been filed, he claimed that the money transferred to Mirza’s account was to repay the money Mirza had lent the association when the court had frozen its accounts back in 2006.The police have raided the houses of Mirza and Khan in Srinagar and have also seized the bank accounts allegedly opened by the pair. Meanwhile the chairman of the Jammu & Kashmir Bank has said that they are examining the opening of bogus accounts and the subsequent withdrawals of cash as well.Edited by Tariq Engineer

Bailey, Lyon picked for Caribbean ODIs

George Bailey and Nathan Lyon have won Australian ODI call-ups while Brad Haddin is a confirmed West Indies tourist after the national selectors unveiled their squads

George Bailey and Nathan Lyon will both be in contention for one-day international debuts after being named in Australia’s squad for the tour of the West Indies. The selectors announced a 16-man group for the five ODIs that begin the tour in mid-March and a 13-man squad for the two T20s that follow. The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin was named in the one-day squad as the backup for the new limited-overs No.1 Matthew Wade. The inclusions of Haddin, Bailey and Lyon were the major changes from the squad taking part in the final stages of the Commonwealth Bank Series, and there was no room in the attack for Ryan Harris or Mitchell Starc. As the national Twenty20 captain, Bailey was due to tour for two matches, but he will now take on the mantle of reserve ODI batsman. His selection came after a Man-of-the-Match performance in the Ryobi Cup final, when his captain’s hundred narrowly failed to earn Tasmania the title, and the national selector John Inverarity said Bailey would also be in contention for a place in the Test squad.”In the final and the other Ryobi Cup games and in the Sheffield Shield, he’s probably in the form of his life,” Inverarity said. “Post him being in the T20 side, whatever’s happened there seemed to have been a real boost to his confidence. He’s playing exceptionally well at the moment and very much deserves his opportunity in that side.”We realise that some time in the next year or two or whenever, we won’t have Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey in the Test team. So what we’re trying to do is develop players for both forms but not least for Test cricket. We had that very much in mind with Peter Forrest … That door is open for George also, to play in the one-dayers and see how he goes and he’s certainly right up there as one of the players we might be looking to for the future.”While Bailey’s Test chances remain in the hands of the selectors, Lyon will certainly be part of Australia’s squad in all three formats. Although he has played 10 Tests and is yet to make his one-day or T20 debut for Australia, it was in the shortest format that Lyon first made his name for South Australia last summer, and he is well qualified for a position alongside Xavier Doherty in the squad.Australia squad for West Indies tour

“Nathan Lyon caught the eye of the cricket community and the national selectors because of his performances in T20,” Inverarity said. “That’s where he first caught the eye. He was selected as a fine offspin bowler by the previous panel and that was a very good selection that they made. Towards the end of the [India] Test series he had a sore quad, so essentially he didn’t come to mind as a possible selection [for the T20s or CB Series].”There was no room for Brad Hogg, who came out of international retirement in Australia’s T20s against India earlier this month, but Inverarity said that was a pre-planned selection to allow Lyon some limited-overs exposure. He said it was likely Australia would take Hogg, Doherty and Lyon to Sri Lanka for the ICC World Twenty20 later this year as a diverse three-man spin attack.Michael Hussey has been recalled to the T20 squad after resting from the two matches against India, and having not played for Australia in the format in nearly two years. Forrest was also named in the T20 squad but Inverarity made it clear he was a backup batsman only, and was not considered part of Australia’s best batting line-up in the format.Aaron Finch and Travis Birt have also found themselves out of Australia’s preferred T20 side and face a challenge to force their way into contention for the World Twenty20 in September. And while the left-arm fast bowler Starc was not officially included, Inverarity said he would travel with the squad and work with the bowling coach Craig McDermott as a learning opportunity.”Mitchell Starc has not been selected as a member of this squad,” he said. “However, Mitchell will travel with this group as a further development opportunity and spend valuable time around the Australian squad in the West Indies.”

'Would be nice if Lorgat apologises' – Dalmiya

More than six weeks after Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat offered to “apologise” to anyone who he had offended in the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya, the interim BCCI chief, has welcomed Lorgat’s offer.”Lorgat is a nice gentleman but it would be nice of him if he apologises,” Dalmiya said in Kolkata, when asked about his reaction to Lorgat’s offer that was made immediately after he was appointed the CSA chief executive despite the BCCI raising its objections. While this may appear as softening of the BCCI’s stand with Lorgat, the deadlock over the BCCI going to trim what was till a few days ago a tour of three Tests, seven ODIs and two Twenty20s, prevailed for another day. While Dalmiya reiterated what the BCCI president N Srinivasan had said three days ago that “the tour is on”, there was no formal exchange between representatives of the two boards. Even though Srinivasan, board secretary Sanjay Patel and treasurer Ravi Savant were together for most of the day along with other key executives at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, it was understood that the South Africa tour itinerary “wasn’t even mentioned” in their discussions.”The sole purpose of the meeting was to proof read and sign the annual report before it goes for printing ahead of the AGM,” said an insider who was a part of the proceedings.Across the continent, CSA indicated it would send out a release on Wednesday afternoon to reassure the fans and thank them for their support, but later said they would “try for tomorrow”. Officials contacted at various franchises said they had no knowledge of any progress on the BCCI-CSA issue and were awaiting further instructions, although many of them expressed concern over a curtailed tour.It appears that unless CSA accedes to the cricket bosses in India, the situation is unlikely to change. At least till the BCCI AGM on September 29.
