Newcastle dealt Javier Manquillo blow

Newcastle have been hit by a hammer blow as an update on Javier Manquillo’s injury situation has been dropped…

What’s the latest?

According to The Chronicle, the Spaniard is unlikely to be fit enough to play against West Ham in the Premier League this weekend.

The report claims that he has suffered ligament damage in his ankle and is set to be absent on Saturday, following on from Kieran Trippier’s broken foot that will see him miss a number of weeks.

Newcastle will be fuming

Eddie Howe will surely be left fuming by this news as it means that he has lost his two first-choice right-backs in the same week.

Trippier’s knock was a gigantic blow for the Magpies as he has been sublime since making his move to the club from Atletico Madrid in January. Newcastle are unbeaten in his four Premier League appearances and he has averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.87. He has produced two goals and managed 24 tackles and interceptions in that time, showing that he has had a big impact at both ends of the pitch.

Therefore, Howe was already rocked by one major issue and now he has to deal with another setback because of Manquillo’s apparent unavailability. The Spanish defender has averaged a score of 6.61 in the top-flight, which places him seventh in the squad overall and shows that he is nowhere near the standard of the English international.

However, there is another drop-off between him and the player who could now be forced to play at right-back against the Hammers – Emil Krafth. The Sweden international has averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.33 for the Magpies, proving that he has been nowhere near good enough for Steve Bruce or Howe.

He is ranked as the 24th player in the squad in terms of WhoScored ratings, which is 17 places lower than Manquillo. Whereas, Trippier is only six places above the ex-Liverpool full-back and this suggests that this injury update is a hammer blow for Howe as he could be left with little option but to select Krafth, who is far worse than his other two right-backs.

The dud’s performances this season suggest that he will be a liability against West Ham if he is in the starting XI on Saturday and this is what will leave Howe fuming ahead of the match. He will surely be hoping that Manquillo is able to return to training next week and be available for their clash with Brentford.

Development of World Cup venues on track – Shetty

The tournament director of the 2011 World Cup, Ratnakar Shetty, has said that the development of the stadiums was on schedule and that the governments of the host countries – India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – were working together to ensure an “incident free” competition.Several venues in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are being redeveloped or constructed from scratch and Shetty was confident they would be ready before the December 31 deadline.”We are monitoring the development of all the World Cup venues, particularly the re-development of stadiums. The events are properly chartered and time is of the essence for us,” Shetty said. “The World Cup has been previously held in the subcontinent in 1987 and 1996, and our aim is to deliver a World Cup remembered as a memorable event for spectators to enjoy and the teams that are participating to be at full strength.”In February, the ICC had written to the BCCI expressing concerns over facilities at Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. Andy Atkinson, the ICC pitch consultant, reportedly suggested several changes that need to be undertaken ahead of the tournament. In June, the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo was deemed to be behind schedule by an ICC delegation in terms of readiness of the pitch, but progress at the two new venues in Pallekele and Hambantota was assessed to be on track.Shetty also said that the hosts were working towards improving the security for the event. “Each of the countries now has full-time security advisors and they are preparing the national security plans as well as the tournament security plans. The three governments are working out to ensure that this will be an incident free 2011 World Cup.”Shetty was in Colombo for the naming of the 2011 World Cup’s mascot – a baby elephant called ‘Stumpy’. The ICC had conducted an online competition inviting the public to suggest a name for the mascot.

Ponting asks for UDRS across the board

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has called on the ICC to make sure the Umpire Decision Review System is used in every series, after the Pakistan board did not put the system in place for the neutral series in England

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has called on the ICC to make sure the Umpire Decision Review System is used in every series, after the Pakistan board did not put the system in place for the neutral series in England. As the “home” board, the PCB is in charge of such matters, and the UDRS will be used for the upcoming Pakistan-England series. However, it is also not being implemented in the Sri Lanka-India Test series, which prompted the Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara to express his disappointment. Ponting has also become used to the UDRS and although the on-field umpires had a reasonably good match at Lord’s, he would have preferred consistency across series.”I got my point across at the referee’s meeting before the series. I think that even the ICC could have stepped in on this occasion,” Ponting said. “It’s a financial thing at the end of the day, that’s the reason we are not using it. I thought the ICC could have come in and done something about it. It hasn’t eventuated so we’ve just got to get on with it now.”You do get used to playing a certain way and having some decisions sent back for a referral. But that’s all we’ve got so we just have to get on with it and let the umpires do their job out in the middle. I think Pakistan just didn’t get around to getting it organised quick enough or something. That was the way it was explained to us at the referee’s meeting.”The cost of the UDRS is one of the major stumbling blocks, and there are also issues around the availability of the equipment. However, given that the system was rolled out properly after a lengthy trial process, Ponting believed the ICC should have stepped in to ensure it was used.”I don’t know the ins and outs of the whole thing and the way it’s being run,” Ponting said. “In a series like this one which is a neutral one there is always going to be that dispute about who’s paying for it and should we use it. It was brought in as compulsory in Test cricket 12 months ago now. I felt if it was ever left up in the air that someone should have stepped in and made sure that it actually happened.”Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of the ICC, defended the current process. Speaking on Test Match Special last week, he said there were several issues that determined whether the UDRS was to be used in the Pakistan-Australia series.”I understood there were some technical difficulties in getting it up and running before the first Test got going,” Lorgat said. “The way we fashion the current scenario is for the home team in consultation with the visitors to determine if they want DRS or not. That’s part of the process that we’re walking to introduce it on a permanent basis.”

Liverpool eyeing Frenkie de Jong move

FSG are willing to sanction Julian Ward’s next big Liverpool move in the shape of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer, according to Sport.

The Lowdown: Previous links

De Jong, who is valued at a whopping £63m by Transfermarkt, has been linked with a move to Anfield previously, with news outlets on the continent claiming in December that the Reds are ‘crazy’ about signing him.

Reports all the way back in 2019 suggested that Jurgen Klopp was offered the 24-year-old’s services but turned down the chance to sign the central midfielder.

He has since gone on to make 120 appearances for Barcelona after leaving Ajax, but it seems as if the Reds are still tracking his situation.

The Latest: Liverpool keen

According to Spanish outlet Sport, both Liverpool and Bayern Munich are willing to pay for De Jong in the summer.

Ward, replacing Michael Edwards, was crucial in bringing Luis Diaz to Anfield according to Klopp, and it seems as though he now has his next target.

However, the report adds that the player is happy at the Nou Camp and sees ‘a lot of future’ with the Catalan giants.

The Verdict: Needed?

The Reds have seven midfield options at this moment in time, one of which is James Milner, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also be into the final 12 months of his deal in the summer while Thiago and Naby Keita have both struggled with injuries, so a marquee midfield addition of someone like De Jong could be a wise call.

There’s no doubting his ability either, with Dutch legend Ronald Koeman hailing his maturity at a young age as ‘amazing’, while Barcelona boss Xavi called him ‘extraordinary’.

However, you could argue that bringing in De Jong could hinder Harvey Elliott’s development into a first-team regular under Klopp – the Dutchman has often been deployed in that slightly more advanced role rather than the defensive position he played at Ajax.

It will be interesting to see if FSG decide to make a move for the Barcelona man, and it appears as if they are willing to pay big for a player who still has over four years remaining on his contract.

Big Gareth Bale to Spurs update

According to reports from Spain, as translated and shared by TEAMtalk, it appears that a pretty big transfer claim has come to light involving Tottenham Hotspur and former hero Gareth Bale.

The Lowdown: Bale re-joins for 2020/2021…

The Wales international star, after leaving north London for Real Madrid in a then-world record £85.3 million deal (BBC), went on to enjoy a trophy-laden spell with the Galacticos before re-joining Tottenham on loan last season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Bale, under former boss Jose Mourinho and his eventual interim replacement Ryan Mason, finished the 2020/2021 Premier League campaign as Spurs’ third-most prolific player in terms of goals and assists combined (11G, 2A).

However, his stay was also marred somewhat by physical issues with Mourinho even calling out the 32-year-old for giving a false depiction of his fitness levels at one stage.

Despite a mixed return, a major claim has come out of Spain involving Bale and another reunion with Spurs under new boss Antonio Conte.

The Latest: Tottenham reach Bale agreement ‘months ago’…

As per sources on the continent, via TEAMtalk, ahead of leaving the Bernabeu this summer when his contract finally expires at the end of June, the forward has already reached an agreement to join Tottenham.

Bale and Spurs apparently had this in place ‘months ago’ – but the former Lilywhites man didn’t come in January as he wanted to run down his current deal at Madrid whilst continuing to collect his bumper pay packet.

The Verdict: Right move?

This is a pretty big claim going by his most recent spell at Tottenham, and despite some bright moments, it’s hard to see him fitting under Conte at N17.

Going by Bale’s recent fitness record, the Italian’s extreme, highly-demanding coaching methods physically could be too much and it’s hard to see him being a regular for that reason.

Scoring a club career total of 183 goals from out wide and further forward, he managed to impress at Euro 2020 for Wales in parts and there is no question he still has quality in abundance.

The point of contention is around application and whether he can be an asset under Conte in the rigorously competitive English top flight.

On a free deal, barring Bale’s potentially large salary, this is a fairly low risk move financially for Tottenham but an arguable gamble in terms of the player’s N17 legacy.

Follow-ons and repeat failures

The Plays of the Day from the third day at Old Trafford

Andrew McGlashan at Old Trafford06-Jun-2010

Mushfiqur Rahim’s innings ended with a tame chip to midwicket, and a catch for the substitute, Karl Brown•Getty Images

Decision of the dayIt was by no means a given that Andrew Strauss would enforce the follow-on when England ended Bangladesh’s first innings on the second evening. However, the damp Manchester morning that greeted the team on Sunday did Strauss a massive favour. If he was pondering extending the lead and letting the pitch wear, overcast skies meant it was a no-brainer to stick Bangladesh back in – 34.1 overs later the match was over and England had earned themselves two days off.Failure of the dayThe stuffing was knocked out of Bangladesh’s effort with just the second ball when their swashbuckling hero, Tamim Iqbal, fended at a rising delivery from James Anderson and feathered an edge to Matt Prior. The visitors have ridden on Tamim’s outstanding form during this tour, a continuation of what he showed in Bangladesh earlier this year, but he was due a failure after six fifties in seven innings. His success has clearly rattled England and Anderson’s pumped-up celebration when he claimed the scalp showed how vital they knew the wicket was. And that is the biggest compliment Tamim can be paid.Action replay of the dayWith Tamim gone early England sensed blood with Anderson hooping the ball away from the Stretford End and Steven Finn steaming in from the Brian Statham End. Finn was gaining considerable bounce off a length and had Imrul Kayes in an almighty tangle with a bouncer that the left-hander fended off his gloves. His demise didn’t feel far away and he soon top-edged his second hook of the match to find the man at deep square-leg, giving an identical entry in the scorebook to yesterday: c Shahzad b Finn. Meanwhile, England will feel their plans have worked with Kayes falling to the short ball – and Finn – in all four innings.Pain of the dayMushfiqur Rahim is a gutsy cricketer and a mighty fine batsman who, in the long term, may be better suited to shelving the keeping gloves and being in the top five. When he walked to the crease his team was in tatters at 37 for 5 but he still tried to battle it out in stronger fashion than some of his top-order team-mates. During a testing spell from Ajmal Shahzad, Rahim took a nasty blow on the bottom hand as some extra bounce caught his glove and left him in considerable discomfort. After some treatment from the physio he fought on, but grimaced more than once and the pain probably played a part in his limp chip to midwicket. Finn claimed the wicket, but Shahzad’s role was key.Sub of the dayWhen England play Test matches at home they rely on the local county to supply the substitute fielders so that squad players can return to their domestic teams. It means the opportunity for someone to grab a moment in the spotlight. Occasionally they play a vital role in victory, as when Paul Weekes took two sharp chances at short leg against West Indies, at Lord’s, in 1995. This time, the catch struck the way of Karl Brown, the Lancashire batsman, at midwicket was a simple affair but it will have given him great joy to cling on and savour helping England take a wicket.

Seamers set up comprehensive win for Sri Lanka

Nuwan Kulasekara found the perfect lines and lengths for the slow and low track that the USA has dished out, and ripped the heart out of New Zealand’s batting

How they were outNuwan Kulasekara troubled the New Zealand top order with three wickets in his first over•Associated Press

Nuwan Kulasekara found the perfect lines and lengths for the slow and low track that the USA has dished out, and ripped the heart out of New Zealand’s batting with three wickets in his first over. Although Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum, the only New Zealanders to reach double figures, avoided the ignominy of the lowest total in Twenty20 internationals, 81 was never going to test Sri Lanka even on this pitch. The win was set up by Kulasekara’s first two overs, three wickets in the first and no runs in the second. He made the necessary adjustments from the first match: everything was stump to stump, slightly short of a length, and offcutters were bowled aplenty. That the innings started with Kumar Sangakkara standing up to the stumps, with no slip in sight, said a lot about the pitch. It didn’t help New Zealand that their top-order batsmen were looking to play around their front pad, and the bowlers were hardly missing. There was no bounce in the pitch to take anything over the stumps either.Aaron Redmond and Rob Nicol both fell to ones that Kulasekara got to jag in sharply. Brendon McCullum got a beauty in between those dismissals, this one holding its line. Ross Taylor, in the next over, played across the line to Angelo Mathews and paid the price. Gareth Hopkins, in to replace the injured Martin Guptill, went for an ill-advised single, and many dubious records were in sight.Crisis man Vettori, though, found support from the older McCullum, and the two batted sensibly to add 45 for the sixth wicket. Neither of them looked to play across the line, both waited for the loose deliveries, which were rare. One of them was a full delivery from Mathews in the seventh over, which McCullum punched down the ground for the first boundary of the innings. Vettori hit two more boundaries, both cleverly played reverse-sweeps against Sanath Jayasuriya. The partnership came to an end when Vettori swept at Ajantha Mendis, and the fielding side and the umpire took the noise emanating for an edge. Vettori, though, demonstrated the exact spot on the pitch his bat had hit, which created the incriminating sound. When McCullum square-cut Thissara Perera through the fingers of Tillakaratne Dilshan in the 16th over, the only other boundary of the piece, the score moved to 76, two more than the lowest total by a major team. Even though McCullum kept New Zealand fighting, the lower order found full and straight bowling from Lasith Malinga too much, securing New Zealand’s smallest total in the format. In the chase, Sri Lanka were hardly under any pressure, especially after Mahela Jayawardene got them going with a 12-ball 17. During his stay in the middle, batting looked at its easiest on this pitch not conducive to attractive cricket. Perera was sent in at the first drop, and he did his job by hitting two fours and a six in his 25 even as Dilshan struggled for timing. Those two cameos were enough, though, to set the chase up, and Dilshan saw them through.
