A round-up of the third batch of Pro20 matches for the 2008-09 season

Cricinfo staff10-Feb-2009Charl Langeveldt took three wickets off the final over to seal a thrilling tie between the Cape Cobras and the Lions in Potchefstroom. Chasing 155, the Lions were well-placed to win, needing eight off the last over with seven wickets in hand. Langeveldt had the innings top scorer Alviro Peterson caught at long-on off the second ball but the next delivery was smashed for six by his partner Dane Vilas. A single gave Werner Coetsee the strike but he fell immediately, edging a bouncer to Andrew Puttick. The scores were level at that point but the Lions failed to score the winning run as Cliff Deacon was bowled by Langeveldt off the final ball. Earlier, the return of JP Duminy from Australia bolstered the Cape Cobras as he top scored with 56 off 44 balls to push the score to 154. However, the efforts of Peterson and Neil McKenzie weren’t enough as the Lions choked in the final over. The Titans finally opened their account in the Pro20 with an an easy six-wicket win against the Eagles at Centurion. The Eagles, after being put in to bat, managed 153 and were led by Dean Elgar, who top scored with 47. He added 62 for the second wicket with Adrian McLaren but after the pair was dismissed, their team struggled to get past 150. The Titans openers Gulam Bodi and Blake Snijman set a solid foundation with a stand of 75, making the chase of 154 much easier for the rest. Farhaan Berhardien built on the platform with an aggressive 35 off 20 balls, launching three consecutive sixes off Ryan Bailey before Roelof van der Merwe sealed the match in the penultimate over with successive sixes off Ryan McLaren.A frenetic seventh-wicket stand of 57 in 4.1 overs between Johan Botha and Craig Thyssen carried the Warriors over the finish line against the Lions in a low-scoring affair in Port Elizabeth.. The Warriors were in trouble at 70 for 6 at one stage in pursuit of a modest 124. Craig Alexander made early inroads with 3 for 14 to jolt them early in their chase before Botha and Thyssen changed the complexion of the game. Lions lost an opportunity to record their first win of the tournament but their bowlers in the end didn’t have a big target to defend. In their innings, the Lions had struggled to 59 for four in the 12th over and were lifted by Vaughan van Jaarsveld but he was circumspect in his unbeaten 40, which came off 43 balls. The Dolphins coasted to an eight-wicket win against the Lions in Durban. Yusuf Abdulla, the left-arm seamer, set it up with 3 for 28 to restrict the Lions to a disappointing 112 for 8. Dane Vilas played the lone hand with an unbeaten 55 off 51 balls with very little support from the other end. The Dolphins openers Hashim Amla and HD Ackerman led the chase with ease, adding 67 before both fell in very quick succession. Ahmed Amla and Grant Rowley then eased to the target with an over to spare. It was a rather disappointing end for the Lions as they finished the tournament without a win. The Dolphins will now meet the Cobras in the first leg of the semi-finals in Newlands on Friday.Ashwell Prince made a fine return from injury with 46 to set up the Warriors’ 18-run win against the Eagles in Bloemfontein. He came in with his team in trouble at 13 for 3, started the repair work with Colin Ingram and continued it with Davey Jacobs. After his dismissal in the 16th over, run out by Dean Elgar, the Warriors were boosted by a late assault by Jacobs and Craig Thyssen, who smashed four sixes in his 41 off 15 balls. Chasing 150, the Eagles were progressing steadily at 88 for 2 in 13 overs but lost five wickets for 22, a position from which they never recovered. The Warriors secured a semi-final berth and will now face the Eagles in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.

وكان فقير قريبًا من الانتقال إلى ليفربول، قبل 4 أعوام في 2018، قبل أن يترك النادي الفرنسي، ولكن الصفقة فشلت في اللحظات الأخيرة.

Phillip Hughes shone with a perfectly timed 151 against Tasmania as his major rivals for Matthew Hayden’s opening spot failed to make significant marks. If the selectors pick Hughes, 20, it will signal a dramatic shift towards youth and he showed he could cope during a heavily-scrutinised innings that helped push New South Wales to 3 for 356 in Newcastle.Phil Jaques, another serious contender for the upcoming tour of South Africa, was bowled early for 9 in his first-class return from back surgery while the Victorian Chris Rogers fell for 24 against South Australia at the MCG. In front of the selector Jamie Cox, who will pick the side next week, Hughes earned his fourth century of the summer and took his collection to 809 runs at 67.41.Hughes had scored 22 for the Prime Minister’s XI against New Zealand on Thursday before flying to Sydney and travelling by road to Newcastle. When his century came with a cover-driven boundary – one of 22 fours in his 248-ball innings – off Gerard Denton he celebrated hard and stayed to raise his bat again with his 150. He was dropped two overs before being caught by Alex Doolan trying to hit Jason Krejza over mid-on.Hughes and Peter Forrest, who was caught behind for 39, put on a careful 116 before the dramatic arrival of Simon Katich lifted the pace. Katich, the captain, had dropped himself to No. 4 to allow Hughes and Jaques the best chance to partner him in the Test side. Katich raced to 102 off 110 balls, with seven fours and four sixes, as the Blues blasted 191 in 34 overs after tea.<BR clear="all"

Pietersen talks of 'dark' week

Kevin Pietersen has spoken of the shock and disappointment he feels after a week of negative publicity

Kevin Pietersen has spoken of the shock and disappointment he feels after a week of negative publicity that culminated in Wednesday’s resignation as England captain. However, in an interview with Sky News, he reiterated his belief that he has nothing to be ashamed of, and says he will have no problems going back to face his team-mates in the England dressing room.”I’m not angry with anybody, I’m just a bit let down by the character assassination which has happened since I got back in the country,” Pietersen said. “I didn’t think it was going to be this bad, especially before anyone had heard my side of the story. I didn’t feel I had done anything wrong.”It has been a really, really dark week but I am coming out the other end. It has been hard and horrible, and it has been hurtful and disappointing. What has been written and said has definitely hurt me. If people wanted to hurt me, they have achieved that. It has been disappointing because it has also hurt my family and friends. I know that I am not a bad bloke.”Pietersen was forced to resign by the ECB after stating in an email to Hugh Morris, the director of England cricket, that he could no longer work with the coach, Peter Moores. But his attempts to oust Moores backfired when Morris sought the opinions of his colleagues, and found that a number of senior players were unimpressed by his actions. One tabloid even went so far as to describe Pietersen as “the most hated man in cricket”. “Everybody likes to be liked,” he said. “I know that I am liked and that I have been portrayed in another way. I also know that the media like to kick someone when they are down. I have seen it happen to a lot of people and unfortunately it has been me this week.”Two men widely believed to have spoken out against Pietersen were Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison, although Harmison later denied, in his column for the Mail on Sunday, that the pair had fallen out. “If you have a look at what Steve Harmison’s written in his column,” said Pietersen, “you’ll categorically see there’s no proper, proper cliques in the dressing room in terms of that hatred they say there is towards me.”He was the one that [supposedly] led the hatred pack against me and I’ve spoken to him twice on the phone, I’ve had text messages from him and he’s written a column saying exactly how wrong those statements were. So I don’t have any problems going back into the England dressing room.”Pietersen will now answer to the new captain, Andrew Strauss, under whom he played five Tests in 2006-07, and he’s adamant that their relationship will have no problems whatsoever. “I’m no expert in captaincy and I know I’m no expert in captaincy, [but] Straussy knows that he can ring me up for advice,” said Pietersen. “If he needs advice on a friends basis and on a team-mates basis, I’ll totally give him advice. He’s a top, top man, he’s one of the guys I get on really, really well with so he’s going to have no troubles.”As for his personal approach to the game, Pietersen did not believe that the embarrassment of the past fortnight would have any bearing on his playing style. “I don’t think I will tone things down,” he said. “I have been going OK doing what I have done.”On the cricket field I still believe in myself. I will do anything to win. I will always try my best and I will never give up. I have a never-say-die attitude. But a lot of what has happened this week has been really, really harsh. My whole life has been scrutinised.”I am looking forward to the freedom I have when I get on a cricket field with a cricket bat in my hand. I wish I could do that now. It is now a case of me going out and doing my business, doing something I absolutely love, which is batting for England, and getting back on track.”All the same, Pietersen did admit that he was itching to find out who it was who leaked the information of his rift with Moores to the media. “I’d had five or six meetings face to face with the gentlemen on the board,” he said. “Then something was leaked, by whom I don’t know – I’d love to find that person – and everything escalated from then.”

Blades had a nightmare in McBurnie signing

While there are a number of factors that contributed to Sheffield United’s fall from a top-half finish in their 2019/20 Premier League campaign to relegation the following season, one of the biggest failings for the Blades was their business in the transfer windows, with the club simply not identifying and subsequently signing the right targets.

Indeed, having spent a whopping £63.45m in their first season back in the top flight – some of which was, admittedly, spent relatively wisely, such as the £20.70m on Sander Berge and £3.51m on Ben Osborn – United followed this spree up with another season of heavy spending the following year, splashing £56.43m on the likes of Rhian Brewster, Aaron Ramsdale, Oliver Burke, Max Lowe and Jayden Bogle.

However, while there are a few contenders for the crown, the then-club record £20m fee paid to Swansea City for Oli McBurnie could easily be argued as being one of the club’s worst deals in this period, as the 25-year-old has, thus far in his time at Bramall Lane, not lived up to this price tag whatsoever.

Nightmare

Indeed, over his 36 Premier League appearances in his first season at the club, the £24k-per-week forward scored six goals, registered no assists and missed 10 big chances, as well as hitting the target with an average of just 0.7 shots and completing just 10.4 passes per game.

These returns saw the Scotland international earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.86, ranking him as the Blades’ joint eighth-best performer in the top flight of English football.

However, over McBurnie’s 23 league appearances the following season, the striker scored just one goal, once again provided no assists and missed eight big chances for his side, with these metrics seeing the 25-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.80.

Things have not improved for the centre-forward over his seven Championship appearances so far this season, with the Scot being yet to find the back of the net, as well as hitting the target with a mere 0.1 shots per game and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.83 in the second tier.

As such, it will perhaps come as no surprise to Sheffield United fans that, since joining the club for £20m back in 2019, McBurnie is now valued by Transfermarkt at just £9m – less than half the figure the club shelled out to land the 25-year-old just two years ago, something which can easily be viewed as something of a nightmare piece of business by the Blades.

Jesse Lingard rejects new contract

Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard has reportedly turned down the offer of a new contract from his boyhood club.

What’s the story?

According to ESPN’s Rob Dawson, the 28-year-old rejected the fresh terms as he seeks assurances about his first-team prospects at Old Trafford.

Lingard has entered the final year of his current deal with United and has been presented with the opportunity to extend his stay in the red half of Manchester, but concerns over game time have seen him reject the hierarchy’s initial approach.

The Red Devils risk losing the England international on a free transfer next summer if an agreement cannot be reached and he’ll be free to begin negotiating with foreign clubs as early as January.

Solskjaer will be concerned

Lingard has contributed a very respectable 33 goals and 20 assists in 211 appearances for United since graduating through the club’s youth academy.

However, he found opportunities hard to come by under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and moved to West Ham United on loan halfway through last season.

In just 16 Premier League outings for the capital club, Lingard notched up an incredible nine goals, laying on a further five assists for his teammates, playing a pivotal part in their fabulous sixth-placed finish.

Despite interest from a selection of other clubs from England’s top-flight and abroad this summer, Solskjaer was keen to retain Lingard’s services, despite the arrival of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He may already be regretting the decision not to seek pastures new, though, after only being awarded four minutes worth of action in the opening three league games of the new campaign.

Dawson’s report states that: “The 28-year-old is determined to find regular football in order to keep his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“He narrowly missed out on a place in the squad for Euro 2020 as England made it all the way to the final but returned to the team for the 4-0 win over Andorra on Sunday, scoring twice and recording an assist.”

With Lingard currently unwilling to put pen to paper, Solskjaer risks losing a very useful player and potentially valuable asset for free, something that will surely concern the Norwegian.

It remains to be seen whether the versatile ace has a change of heart or finally leaves United on a permanent basis, and many clubs will watching how this situation unfolds with a keen eye.
