West Ham fans erupt over Berardi claim

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham fans have erupted over a transfer claim involving Italy international and Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi.

The Hammers continue their hunt for new attacking signings following their stellar 2020/2021 campaign under manager David Moyes.

Indeed, as they gear up for a new season, where they will be competing in the Europa League group stages, GSB are on the look out for new forwards and have set their sights on bolstering Moyes’ options.

After Euro 2020, some new players have been linked with a move to West Ham following their impressive performances at the major tournament.

Ukraine international Roman Yaremchuk is a prime example, with Sportitalia transfer journalist Alfredo Pedulla now claiming West Ham have set their sights on another forward who impressed at the Euros.

Indeed, as reported, the Hammers have made an inquiry to sign Berardi in recent weeks with both Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund also chasing the 26-year-old.

In reaction to this interest, there has been no shortage of Hammers opinions in reply to West Ham Central, who shared the news on Twitter.

BAIXO CUSTO

Owls could sell Joe Wildsmith

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith could be set to depart the club this summer, if a new shot-stopper is to arrive, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon…

What’s the story?

Wildsmith has been with Sheffield Wednesday since he came through the club’s academy system in 2014, and has gone on to make 81 appearances in total for the first-team over the years.

But he has found consistent minutes hard to come by in recent seasons, with Cameron Dawson being the preferred option between the posts at times for the Owls.

Darren Moore’s side are preparing for life in the third tier of English football, after they were relegated from the Championship last term, after a disappointing league campaign in 2020/21.

Nixon has previously revealed that Sheffield Wednesday held an interest in signing Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, with the Northern Irish international struggling for consistent minutes with Sean Dyche’s men.

He has since followed that up with an update on Wildsmith’s future at Hillsborough, and it appears as though his days could be numbered if a new goalkeeper is to arrive before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion.

It’s the right decision

The goalkeeping department at Sheffield Wednesday has had its critics over the years, but the club have endured a turbulent spell off-the-field, which could have potentially have impacted some performances in recent seasons.

Keiren Westwood was the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for a number of seasons, but with his future being elsewhere at the end of the 2020/21 season, both Dawson and Wildsmith were presented with their opportunities to impress.

Wildsmith has caught the eye with some strong performances, but some might argue that he lacks consistency when involved in the starting XI, and he could soon be heading for the exit door ahead of the new League One season.

The 25-year-old had an average Whoscored rating of just 6.16 from the 2020/21 season, which ranks him a dismal 26th on the list at Sheffield Wednesday, with only Jack Marriott, Andre Green and Alex Hunt below him in the rankings, and that trio only made a handful of appearances for the Owls last term.

Whereas Wildsmith made 19 league appearances in total for the club last season, but was far from convincing between the posts, as he only kept five clean sheets for Darren Moore’s side.

Cameron Dawson isn’t much better when it comes to Whoscored’s ratings, with the 26-year-old averaging 6.35, which puts him 21st on the list.

But when comparing him to Bailey Peacock-Farrell, the former Leeds United goalkeeper comes out better in terms of statistics whilst he was with the Yorkshire-based side.

Peacock-Farrell kept ten clean sheets for the Whites in the 2018/19 season, and already has experience of playing regularly in the Championship whilst with Leeds.

Therefore, you have to feel as though Sheffield Wednesday would be making the right decision in moving Wildsmith on this summer, especially if they were to strike an agreement with Burnley for Peacock-Farrell. With reported wages of £5,100 per-week, Wildsmith’s potential departure could free up more space on the Sheffield Wednesday wage bill, which could be used on other areas of the squad moving forwards.

Goldstraw eight short of elite 50-wicket club

Dan Goldstraw is within eight victims of becoming only the fourth bowler in Southern League history to take 50 wickets in a season

Mike Vimpany08-Aug-2002Dan Goldstraw is within eight victims of becoming only the fourth bowler in Southern League history to take 50 wickets in a season.Since the competition began 34 years ago, only Bob Laishley, Andy Hooper and South African Angus Small have ever claimed a half-century of wickets in a summer session.Laishley did it for Winchester way back in 1980, taking a record 58 wickets at a time when there were no restrictions on bowlers.Andy Hooper took 56 scalps with his left-arm spin for Andover in 1989, while Small, who played provincial cricket for Eastern Province and Natal, took 50 wickets to help South Wilts to their only SL title success a year later. Now Goldstraw is homing in on a place in the Premier League’s order of merit. The 6-54 return in last week’s abandoned match against Portsmouth lifted Goldie’s tally for the season to 42 wickets."Dan’s bowling better and better as the season goes on," praised BAT skipper Dave Banks."We’ve been able to let him off his leash in the nine-week session of all-day games, where there are no restrictions."But now we’ve resumed 50-over cricket, he’ll have to get his wickets inside the only ten overs he’s allowed to bowl, which will doubtless concentrate the mind."Goldstraw looks a near certainty to lift the Premier Division 1 bowling award for the second consecutive season.Team-mate Damian Shirazi went into today’s match with South Wilts with a 63-run deficit to make up on Bashley’s Western Australian star Luke Ronchi.Latest individual statistics:Premier 1

Zimbabwe are a very good one-day side, says Ganguly

Charlie Austin14-Sep-2002There was no trace of pressure on Ganguly’s face as a smiling India skipper addressed the media after his team had pulled off a 14-run victory over Zimbabwe in a high-scoring game in their opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.Playing under lights, the Indian bowlers stuck to the task, even though they were being mauled by the best batsman in the African continent, Andy Flower.Ganguly paid rich tributes to the left-handed master batsman from Zimbabwe: “Andy is always the danger man against India.”The Indian skipper also said that: “It was always going to be a tough ask for Zimbabwe to chase 288 runs. We always had the run rate under control. Scoring 10 runs an over batting second is not always easy.”I thought we bowled pretty well in this game. Zaheer bowled fantastically. Nehra bowled very well except one over in the end. We could have had better effort from our spin bowlers. It is a flat wicket and I thought we did a pretty good job.”This was a great performance. We travelled a long way and the guys are really tired,” he said.Talking about the remaining games in this tough group which also features England, Ganguly was of the opinion that the game on Wednesday between Zimbabwe and England is going to be a close one, “Zimbabwe are a good one-day side.”Man of the Match award winner Mohammad Kaif was happy to have played a big part in yet another Indian victory. He was instrumental in India winning the NatWest Trophy this English summer, and he rates the innings at Lord’s as his best so far. When asked about his success batting at No 7, Kaif said: “It is just a matter of how you prepare yourself back home when you practice in the nets. I have been practising a few shots and that came off very well.”He added: “I thought it was a very good wicket to bat on. No 7 is a tough number to bat for any batsman.”Zimbabwe skipper Heath Streak sounded positive despite the defeat.”Andy and Grant put together a good partnership in the middle, and then Guy Whittall and Andy. We probably missed out in the middle when we tried to get a couple of big overs in,” he said.”We always knew it is going to be a challenge in the first 15 overs, we got breakthroughs today, but just couldn’t restrict them. Especially when Sehwag got away good shots through the off-side field.”Looking forward to the big game against England, Streak said: “We have got to play well against England on Wednesday. That is our first objective. Being in a strong group opens things up a bit. It is good to be in a strong group and hopefully we can play a good game against England.”

Pundit says Michy Batshuayi likely to leave Chelsea

Football.London’s Chelsea correspondent, Sam Inkersole, has told Football FanCast that he believes Michy Batshuayi has played his last game for the Blues.

Signed by Antonio Conte five years ago, the Belgian striker has an impressive strike-rate of 25 goals in 77 games for the club, the majority of those coming from the bench, and has never been close to establishing himself as Chelsea’s first-choice frontman.

It’s been some 18 months since Batshuayi played a competitive fixture for the west London outfit having spent last season across the capital with Crystal Palace.

But having found the net just twice in 20 games, the 27-year-old has done little to convince Thomas Tuchel that he’s worthy of a place in his squad.

Batshuayi’s deal at Stamford Bridge expires in 12 months, which will only give Chelsea another reason to move him on.

And Inkersole told Football FanCast that the former Marseille striker, who’s been linked with Leeds and other already this window, is likely to end his five-year affiliation with the Blues:

“With Batshuayi, I will be very surprised if he remains at the club this summer, it will probably be time to cut ties with him.”
