Gautam Gambhir and Shane Watson have been charged with “spirit of the game” offences after the two were involved in an altercation on day one of the third Test in Delhi. Chris Broad, the match referee, charged Gambhir with Level 2 offence for not conducting play “within the spirit of the game as well as within the laws of cricket”. Watson will answer a Level 1 charge under the same section.Gambhir claimed the clash, which occurred in the 51st over of India’s first innings, when he pushed his elbow into Watson’s chest was accidental, but he could face a ban of one Test if found guilty at the hearing after play on Thursday.Gambhir, who has hit consecutive centuries against Australia, had a series of verbal clashes with Watson during the middle session on day one and then ran into him when trying for a second run. “It wasn’t deliberate, it just happened,” Gambhir said at the end of the first day. “I didn’t need to get into this argument with Shane Watson because he had no option of getting me out. There wasn’t a need for me to stick my elbow out, it just happened.”Level 2 penalties range from a fine of between 50 and 100% of a match fee and/or a ban of one Test. If Watson, who is playing his sixth Test, is found guilty he could receive an official reprimand and/or a 50% fine.The umpires Billy Bowden and Aleem Dar laid the charges against the players along with the TV official Suresh Shastri.After tea Gambhir also argued with part-time spinner Simon Katich – the bowler appeared to have halted Gambhir from taking a run – and the pair was separated by Bowden. No action will be taken over those exchanges.Gambhir was fined 65% of his match fee for a similar incident in 2007 when he barged in to Pakistan bowler Shahid Afridi while batting in a one-day match in Kanpur. He was found guilty of a Level 2 charge of inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players and was also ruled to have breached a Level 1 condition of not conducting play with the spirit of the game.Zaheer Khan was docked 80% of his match fee in the second Test for his celebration when Matthew Hayden was dismissed in the second innings in Mohali. The tense series, which India leads 1-0, follows a fractious contest in Australia in 2007-08.

Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have confirmed they are planning a multi-nation franchise-owned Twenty20 tournament based on the IPL, which they hope to launch by 2011. Although the competition is still in the planning stages, the idea is to have city-based teams and schedule it at a time that would allow Indian stars to take part.The concept will involve two separate conferences – an eastern division based in Africa and a western division in Australasia – and the top sides from each will progress to the finals. It will not replace the existing domestic Twenty20 competitions; instead it is most likely to be held in October with each nation free to also retain their state- or provincial-based tournaments.The organisers want the competition to feed teams into the Champions League Twenty20. The southern hemisphere-based tournament, which as yet has no name, is another indication of the growing dominance of Twenty20.The first season of the IPL was massively popular this year in India, where there is also the unsanctioned ICL competition, while England will soon be playing for US$20 million in the Stanford Super Series. Peter Young, Cricket Australia’s spokesman, conceded it will be a challenge to squeeze the new tournament in but the organisers were confident it could be achieved.”It’ll be short, sharp and very focused but the exact number of games is yet to be determined,” Young said. “Strategically we see that there’s a finite amount of Twenty20 cricket that’s likely to be ideal, with a number of major global blocks.”There is still a way to go before the finer details can be finalised, including the number of teams. There is also potential for the African conference to feature sides not based in South Africa and for the Australasian division to have teams from outside Australia and New Zealand. Domestic players are likely to feature heavily but the three boards are keen to ensure international stars, from India or England, for example, take part.”Gathering a large number of the world’s marquee players into a single competition over a compressed time-frame can capture the public imagination and create new audiences for cricket,” Justin Vaughan, New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive, said. “The challenge for the three southern-hemisphere boards is to create the stage for that opportunity to be captured in a way which complements international cricket.”Cricket Australia has been considering a franchise-based Twenty20 system for some time. James Sutherland, the chief executive of Cricket Australia, said it had become clear that to reach a critical mass, a regional approach was needed.”The idea developed out of blue-sky Twenty20 thinking over the past 18 months,” Sutherland said. “Regional-level Twenty20 cricket played at the level immediately below international cricket has shown it can capture the public imagination and create new audiences for cricket.”But as we have seen in India, it needs critical mass to generate major public excitement. The regional concept we have been charged with developing provides that critical mass.”Cricket Australia is also keen to increase the international focus of its state-based Twenty20 tournament. From 2009-10 it will encourage the six state teams to recruit star players from overseas.Cricket South Africa has shown a strong interest in the concept. “Cricket South Africa is keen to forge strong partnerships with boards around the world to ensure the continued growth of the game at various levels,” said its chief executive, Gerald Majola. “While details of this new competition still need to be finalized, we are confident it will give cricket in South Africa a major boost, and will ultimately change the cricket landscape in our country.”

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge says that Arsenal’s priority on transfer deadline day is going to be outgoings rather than incomings.

Mikel Arteta’s side have spent more than anyone else in the Premier League, but their starting line-up hasn’t been massively strengthened, with many of their signings coming in as squad players.

Arsenal’s five summer additions have cost more than £130m, but their business hasn’t helped their early-season results.

Following their 5-0 hammering at Manchester City on Saturday, the Gunners head into the international break rock-bottom of the Premier League table on zero points, with nine goals conceded and they are yet to find the net themselves.

Only one of their five signings in Martin Odegaard was involved at the Etihad Stadium and he was hooked after 70 minutes with Arsenal trailing 4-0.

Despite their need for players, Bridge told The Transfer Tavern that their business today is likely to revolve around moving players on rather than adding to their squad:

“There’s nothing coming out at the moment. They have spent a hell of a lot of money. Unless something comes out of the woodwork, it’s outgoings for them – Bellerin, Maitland-Niles and Nketiah.

“I have not heard anything in terms of incomings since their double signing of Odegaard and Ramsdale.”

The court directive relates to charges of perjury – filing a false affidavit – in a case involving Jagmohan Dalmiya’s expulsion from the Indian board.Dalmiya, a former board president himself, filed a case of perjury against the officials in June 2007 for allegedly producing false documents in court relating to his expulsion in December 2006.The BCCI had filed an affidavit – signed by the six officials – in the Calcutta High Court stating that the rule under which Dalmiya had been expelled from the BCCI had been registered as required with the Registrar of Societies in Chennai. Dalmiya then filed a case against the six officials alleging that the documents submitted in court were false and were produced with intent to mislead the court.

Former Leicester City defender Steve Howey is not surprised that Liverpool took an interest in Foxes winger Harvey Barnes during the transfer window.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admired Barnes for some time, with reports suggesting the then-Premier League champions were mulling over a move last year.

Following a disappointing campaign which saw the Reds relinquish their hold on the title, Liverpool were linked with the 23-year-old once again this summer.

It came after Barnes scored 13 goals before a knee injury halted his progress last season.

But the winger, who boasts one England cap, ended speculation over his future by penning a new four-year deal with Leicester last month.

Having returned from injury, Barnes has started all four of the Foxes’ fixtures so far this season, including the Community Shield triumph over Manchester City.

Howey believes Liverpool will keep tabs on Barnes despite extending his contract and has claimed he would be an exciting signing for the Reds.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “Their interest doesn’t surprise me. Without a doubt, Jurgen Klopp would have been looking around to see what he could do to add to his squad.

“I think Harvey Barnes would have been a good acquisition.”

أعلن إريك تين هاج المدير الفني الهولندي لنادي مانشستر يونايتد، موقفه النهائي من رحيل كريستيانو رونالدو عن صفوف الشياطين الحمر.

اللاعب البرتغالي قدم طلبًا للرحيل عن مانشستر يونايتد في الصيف الجاري، وذلك من أجل لعب بطولة دوري أبطال أوروبا التي لا يشارك فيها النادي الإنجليزي.

ولم يشارك كريستيانو رونالدو مع مانشستر يونايتد في فترة الإعداد للموسم الجديد حتى الآن، وتخلف عن السفر إلى تايلاند.

تين هاج في مؤتمر صحفي اليوم، سُئل عن كريستيانو رونالدو، وطبيعة العلاقة معه، ليرد الهولندي: “رونالدو ليس للبيع.. إنه في خطط النادي”.

وأضاف: “إنه ليس معنا الآن لمشاكل شخصية، نحن نخطط مع رونالدو للموسم الجديد، أتطلع للعمل معه، ولا أعرف كيف أجعله سعيدًا؟، لكنه في خططنا ولا نفكر في رحيله نهائيًا.. هذا كل شيء”.

واختتم: “لقد تحدثت مع رونالدو، وما قيل بيني وبينه، ما يمكنني تأكيده أنه كان جيدًا حقًا، ونحن نعتمد عليه بشكل كبير”.
