Delhi stay alive with resounding win

A round-up of the fourth day’s play of the sixth-round matches of the Ranji Trophy Super League 2008-09

Cricinfo staff15-Dec-2008Delhi 384 (Dhawan 93, Kohli 69, Chopra 58, Nanda 47) and 132 for 0 (Dhawan 84*, Chopra 42*) beat Saurashtra 241 (Chauhan 61, Jadeja 56, Awana 5-60) and 274 (Jadeja 143, Awana 5-77) by ten wickets

Delhi have bounced back the way champions are expected to. A win was what last year’s winners sorely needed to keep their title defence alive, and they battled hard to beat hosts Saurashtra at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground.Saurashtra began the final day with two second-innings wickets down, trailing Delhi by 97 runs. They would have been confident of their chances, with Cheteshwar Pujara, who’s scored heavily in Rajkot this season, and the experienced Shitanshu Kotak resuming the innings. However, Delhi found a hero in Parvinder Awana, who picked the right day to complete his maiden first-class ten-wicket match haul.Awana, who took a maiden five-for in the first innings, gave his team the upper hand by dismissing Kotak and Pujara in successive overs. Left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan soon made it 86 for 5 when he snared Jaydev Shah, the Saurashtra captain; Delhi were still 57 runs in the lead. Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja had a double-century in an earlier game, and under pressure he came up with a brisk 166-ball 143. He took charge of the innings, adding vital partnerships with Sagar Jogiyani (26) and Rakesh Dhurv (17). At 212 for 6, a lead of 69 and 40-odd overs completed, Saurashtra weren’t safe yet. Jadeja needed support at the other end, but Awana once again did his two-in-two trick: Dhurv and Kamlesh Makvana were removed in consecutive overs.Running out of partners, Jadeja needed to score as many runs as possible. Saurashtra’s final two pairs put on 56, with the two tailenders contributing only three. Jadeja was last man out, caught-and-bowled to Awana, setting Delhi 132 to win. With 27 overs to reach the target, it was Shikhar Dhawan, the top scorer in their first innings, who gave the Delhi innings the much-needed impetus. He smashed 84 off 68 balls, with eight fours and two sixes, and more importantly, stayed unbeaten. Aakash Chopra – who made 42 off 64 – stayed with Dhawan to help Delhi gain a vital bonus point by virtue of a ten-wicket win.Delhi, now fourth in the standings, will play their final league game against Rajasthan, who have already been relegated to the Plate League, while Saurashtra, who have a one-point edge in third place, host Hyderabad. Second-placed Gujarat could be upstaged if results don’t go in their favour, but they will start the final round as favourites to reach the quarter-finals.Punjab 291 (Kaul 106, Goel 44, Sidhana 41) and 211 for 1 (Inder Singh 112*, Sohal 91) beat Hyderabad 335 (Suman 131, Quadri 80, Shine 57, Ladda 4-72) and 164 (Pai 50, Ladda 5-39) by nine wickets
Scorecard
If Delhi kept their hopes alive, so did Punjab. They will, however, need a lot of luck if they are to qualify in the top three from Group A. Punjab took Hyderabad’s remaining eight second-innings wickets in 46.2 overs on the final day at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, and a unbroken 197-run second-wicket stand saw them reach their target in 36.2.Hyderabad started the day leading by 112, and their overnight pair of Anoop Pai and Amol Shinde extended it to 155. Legspinner Sarabjit Ladda, though, triggered a collapse. Shinde was caught by Ravi Inder Singh for 43, and Abhinav Kumar was dismissed in the same manner nine runs later. Pai was bowled by Ladda on 50, and the wickets of Syed Quadri and Arjun Yadav saw the bowler complete his maiden five-for.MP Arjun resisted with his 25, before left-arm spinner Varun Khanna closed the innings with two wickets in two balls. Chasing 209, Punjab lost opener Karan Goel early, but Inder Singh and Sohal’s scores 112 and 91 were enough to seal the deal. Punjab now have 12 points from six games, and will need to win with a bonus point against Mumbai – already in the quarter-final – and pray that Saurashtra lose and Delhi are kept to one point in the final round of matches.
ScorecardAn unbeaten century from Kedar Jadhav ensured Maharashtra earned three vital points in their bid to avoid relegation to the Plate League. The draw now leaves Railways needing a win against Group B leaders Tamil Nadu to qualify for the quarter-finals. If Railways win by an innings or ten wickets, they will gain a bonus point and move ahead of Uttar Pradesh, who are currently in second place but have completed their league games. Just a win will leave them hoping that Maharashtra take the first-innings lead or score a victory over Karnataka in their last game.Maharashtra, resuming the day on 34 for 0, needed 269 more on the final day to win. But they chose caution over glory, not risking the three points (for the first-innings lead) already in the bag: a loss would have seen them get none. Openers Harshad Khadiwale and Rohan Bhosale doubled the overnight score before Khadiwale was bowled by Anureet Singh. Ameya Shrikhande, whose first-innings ton had given his team the advantage, was quickly dismissed for 13, but Jadhav and Ankit Bawne frustrated Railways. The two put on 143, but more significantly their stand lasted 55.5 overs. Bawne was trapped leg-before by Sanjay Bangar, the Railways captain. Nikhil Paradkar then played out 25 deliveries for his 1, and Rohit Motwani 16 for his 1 not out as Jadhav remained steady at the other end.Maharashtra scored 24 runs in 15 overs after Bawne fell. Jadhav finished on 114 off 252 balls, with 15 fours and a six.Karnataka 511 (Akhil 135, Uthappa 65, Raghu 64, Chawla 3-141) drew with Uttar Pradesh 567 (Srivastava 159, Kaif 112, Chawla 96, Aiyappa 3-108)
ScorecardWhile all about him were losing their heads, and their wickets, Piyush Chawla kept his, to score a crucial 96 and take Uttar Pradesh a step closer to the quarter-finals. Coming in just before lunch, with UP still 143 short of Karnataka’s 511, he strung together a partnership with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, then saw two wickets fall to let Karnataka back in. UP were 55 behind when No. 10 Amir Khan came out but the two batted sensibly for the much-needed three points in this, their last league game. (Read the full report.)

Jesse Lingard rejects new contract

Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard has reportedly turned down the offer of a new contract from his boyhood club.

What’s the story?

According to ESPN’s Rob Dawson, the 28-year-old rejected the fresh terms as he seeks assurances about his first-team prospects at Old Trafford.

Lingard has entered the final year of his current deal with United and has been presented with the opportunity to extend his stay in the red half of Manchester, but concerns over game time have seen him reject the hierarchy’s initial approach.

The Red Devils risk losing the England international on a free transfer next summer if an agreement cannot be reached and he’ll be free to begin negotiating with foreign clubs as early as January.

Solskjaer will be concerned

Lingard has contributed a very respectable 33 goals and 20 assists in 211 appearances for United since graduating through the club’s youth academy.

However, he found opportunities hard to come by under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and moved to West Ham United on loan halfway through last season.

In just 16 Premier League outings for the capital club, Lingard notched up an incredible nine goals, laying on a further five assists for his teammates, playing a pivotal part in their fabulous sixth-placed finish.

Despite interest from a selection of other clubs from England’s top-flight and abroad this summer, Solskjaer was keen to retain Lingard’s services, despite the arrival of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He may already be regretting the decision not to seek pastures new, though, after only being awarded four minutes worth of action in the opening three league games of the new campaign.

Dawson’s report states that: “The 28-year-old is determined to find regular football in order to keep his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“He narrowly missed out on a place in the squad for Euro 2020 as England made it all the way to the final but returned to the team for the 4-0 win over Andorra on Sunday, scoring twice and recording an assist.”

With Lingard currently unwilling to put pen to paper, Solskjaer risks losing a very useful player and potentially valuable asset for free, something that will surely concern the Norwegian.

It remains to be seen whether the versatile ace has a change of heart or finally leaves United on a permanent basis, and many clubs will watching how this situation unfolds with a keen eye.

Pietersen talks of 'dark' week

Kevin Pietersen has spoken of the shock and disappointment he feels after a week of negative publicity

Kevin Pietersen has spoken of the shock and disappointment he feels after a week of negative publicity that culminated in Wednesday’s resignation as England captain. However, in an interview with Sky News, he reiterated his belief that he has nothing to be ashamed of, and says he will have no problems going back to face his team-mates in the England dressing room.”I’m not angry with anybody, I’m just a bit let down by the character assassination which has happened since I got back in the country,” Pietersen said. “I didn’t think it was going to be this bad, especially before anyone had heard my side of the story. I didn’t feel I had done anything wrong.”It has been a really, really dark week but I am coming out the other end. It has been hard and horrible, and it has been hurtful and disappointing. What has been written and said has definitely hurt me. If people wanted to hurt me, they have achieved that. It has been disappointing because it has also hurt my family and friends. I know that I am not a bad bloke.”Pietersen was forced to resign by the ECB after stating in an email to Hugh Morris, the director of England cricket, that he could no longer work with the coach, Peter Moores. But his attempts to oust Moores backfired when Morris sought the opinions of his colleagues, and found that a number of senior players were unimpressed by his actions. One tabloid even went so far as to describe Pietersen as “the most hated man in cricket”. “Everybody likes to be liked,” he said. “I know that I am liked and that I have been portrayed in another way. I also know that the media like to kick someone when they are down. I have seen it happen to a lot of people and unfortunately it has been me this week.”Two men widely believed to have spoken out against Pietersen were Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison, although Harmison later denied, in his column for the Mail on Sunday, that the pair had fallen out. “If you have a look at what Steve Harmison’s written in his column,” said Pietersen, “you’ll categorically see there’s no proper, proper cliques in the dressing room in terms of that hatred they say there is towards me.”He was the one that [supposedly] led the hatred pack against me and I’ve spoken to him twice on the phone, I’ve had text messages from him and he’s written a column saying exactly how wrong those statements were. So I don’t have any problems going back into the England dressing room.”Pietersen will now answer to the new captain, Andrew Strauss, under whom he played five Tests in 2006-07, and he’s adamant that their relationship will have no problems whatsoever. “I’m no expert in captaincy and I know I’m no expert in captaincy, [but] Straussy knows that he can ring me up for advice,” said Pietersen. “If he needs advice on a friends basis and on a team-mates basis, I’ll totally give him advice. He’s a top, top man, he’s one of the guys I get on really, really well with so he’s going to have no troubles.”As for his personal approach to the game, Pietersen did not believe that the embarrassment of the past fortnight would have any bearing on his playing style. “I don’t think I will tone things down,” he said. “I have been going OK doing what I have done.”On the cricket field I still believe in myself. I will do anything to win. I will always try my best and I will never give up. I have a never-say-die attitude. But a lot of what has happened this week has been really, really harsh. My whole life has been scrutinised.”I am looking forward to the freedom I have when I get on a cricket field with a cricket bat in my hand. I wish I could do that now. It is now a case of me going out and doing my business, doing something I absolutely love, which is batting for England, and getting back on track.”All the same, Pietersen did admit that he was itching to find out who it was who leaked the information of his rift with Moores to the media. “I’d had five or six meetings face to face with the gentlemen on the board,” he said. “Then something was leaked, by whom I don’t know – I’d love to find that person – and everything escalated from then.”

McAvennie makes claim on Spurs’ Dier

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has been blasted by former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: Time out for Dier

Dier had started his season in impressive form, starting all four of Spurs’ opening top flight games as they earned triple 1-0 victories to jump to the top of the Premier League table.

But on Saturday, Dier and Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were handed their first blow of the season as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at London rivals Crystal Palace, with the England international forced off with an injury after just 12 minutes.

It is unknown how long the 27-year-old is set to miss, but he has received criticism from McAvennie following the defeat to Patrick Viera’s men.

The Latest: McAvennie blasts Dier

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie has claimed that Spurs shouldn’t reintroduce the former Sporting Lisbon man to the XI when he recovers from injury.

The former Celtic and Hammers forward has insisted that the £19.8million-rated man never possessed the qualities required to play at centre-back anyway.

He said: “Eric Dier has never been a centre half.

“When you watch him you can see that he just hasn’t got it.

“They have tried to make a space for him in the team.

“They don’t need him in the midfield, and he doesn’t do it at the back. He never has been a defender and never will be.”

The Verdict: Harsh but true

The harsh reality is that Dier’s previous backs McAvennie’s point up. When Nuno has all his regular defenders back, with Davinson Sanchez and Cristian Romero missing the game, Dier is likely to drop to the bench or move to midfield.

Dier, who has been labelled ‘sensational’ in the past by former Lilywhite Jermaine Jenas, will now miss at least Thursday’s UEFA Conference League trip to Rennes and maybe Sunday’s vital game with Chelsea.

Falling to defeat at Palace wasn’t Dier’s fault as he was off for over 75 minutes, but if his injury is a lengthy one, it may prove difficult to force his way back in once Romero has settled.

Blades had a nightmare in McBurnie signing

While there are a number of factors that contributed to Sheffield United’s fall from a top-half finish in their 2019/20 Premier League campaign to relegation the following season, one of the biggest failings for the Blades was their business in the transfer windows, with the club simply not identifying and subsequently signing the right targets.

Indeed, having spent a whopping £63.45m in their first season back in the top flight – some of which was, admittedly, spent relatively wisely, such as the £20.70m on Sander Berge and £3.51m on Ben Osborn – United followed this spree up with another season of heavy spending the following year, splashing £56.43m on the likes of Rhian Brewster, Aaron Ramsdale, Oliver Burke, Max Lowe and Jayden Bogle.

However, while there are a few contenders for the crown, the then-club record £20m fee paid to Swansea City for Oli McBurnie could easily be argued as being one of the club’s worst deals in this period, as the 25-year-old has, thus far in his time at Bramall Lane, not lived up to this price tag whatsoever.

Nightmare

Indeed, over his 36 Premier League appearances in his first season at the club, the £24k-per-week forward scored six goals, registered no assists and missed 10 big chances, as well as hitting the target with an average of just 0.7 shots and completing just 10.4 passes per game.

These returns saw the Scotland international earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.86, ranking him as the Blades’ joint eighth-best performer in the top flight of English football.

However, over McBurnie’s 23 league appearances the following season, the striker scored just one goal, once again provided no assists and missed eight big chances for his side, with these metrics seeing the 25-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.80.

Things have not improved for the centre-forward over his seven Championship appearances so far this season, with the Scot being yet to find the back of the net, as well as hitting the target with a mere 0.1 shots per game and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.83 in the second tier.

As such, it will perhaps come as no surprise to Sheffield United fans that, since joining the club for £20m back in 2019, McBurnie is now valued by Transfermarkt at just £9m – less than half the figure the club shelled out to land the 25-year-old just two years ago, something which can easily be viewed as something of a nightmare piece of business by the Blades.
