Calazans recebe o terceiro cartão amarelo e desfalca o Flu no domingo

Shane Long’s market value has significantly dropped since joining Southampton

With Southampton having only managed to score five goals in their opening seven Premier League games of the season and still without a win, it’s safe to say that things haven’t been particularly positive for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in recent weeks.

One player, in particular, that has had a fairly disappointing start to the season is Saints striker Shane Long, who has only played 41 minutes of action for Southampton so far this term after playing 25 minutes in their 8-0 win over Newport County and 16 minutes in their 1-0 defeat against Wolves, both seeing the striker come off the substitutes bench.

Southampton signed Long, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £60k-per-week according to Spotrac back in the 2014 summer transfer window by Ralph Krueger from Hull City for a reported fee of around £12m.

In October 2014, Long’s market value was listed at £9m according to Transfermarkt, the highest it has been throughout his career.

After making a total of 228 appearances for Southampton across all competitions in which he has managed to score  35 goals and provide 26 assists along the way, the 34-year-old’s current value has drastically fallen to just £1.08m.

This shows just how dramatically Long’s value has toppled during his time at St. Mary’s, during which he spent a short loan spell at AFC Bournemouth in the second half of last season. It’s also safe to say that judging by his goals record, this was a seismic mistake from Krueger when he was still on the south coast.

Given the lack of game time Long has had so far this season, it seems unlikely, in our view, that he would be getting his first start of the season in the Premier League anytime soon either.

Looking ahead, with Long’s current contract at Southampton set to expire next summer, we feel that it would probably best for the club to move the veteran on at that point to see if any other club would be willing to take him. That’s unless he can turn the tide and prove himself to be a useful figure for the Saints between now and then.

If Southampton were to let Long go at the end of his contract, we feel that there probably wouldn’t be many Premier League clubs, if any, interested in taking a chance on him.

Tendulkar returns to boost India in opener

The preview for the first ODI between New Zealand and India at McLean Park in Napier

Gautam Gambhir is likely to bat at No 3 in Napier © AFP
The Big PictureMahendra Singh Dhoni was confident his young outfit would learn from the mistakes that cost them the first Twenty20 international in Christchurch. However, they didn’t learn quickly enough, and the upshot was a 2-0 defeat for the world champions. Now they are faced with the challenge of adapting to the 50-over format in conditions their batsmen haven’t fully come to grips with yet and to counter a tenacious opponent expert in exploiting home advantage. From India’s point of view it’s vital they hit the ground running at McLean Park.India’s opening combination of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag has played a pivotal role in their one-day success in 2008 but Gambhir has struggled in New Zealand. He was over-aggressive in the first Twenty20 international and failed to find his rhythm despite spending time at the crease in the second. The openers’ failure to provide substantial starts has deprived the middle-order of the momentum they have become accustomed to. However, that partnership will be split in Napier when Sachin Tendulkar returns to open with Sehwag, Gambir dropping down the order. Tendulkar’s return, though, means India will have one opener who is playing his first game of the tour, and a No. 3 yet to find form.New Zealand are quietly confident after their upset win in the Twenty20s. Their fast bowlers provided early breakthroughs and the pressure was increased by Daniel Vettori, who was able to restrict a strong middle-order. They have also been bolstered by the recovery of the injured Kyle Mills, who will take the new ball and also provide depth to the batting line-up. However, their coach Andy Moles still called India the favourites whom New Zealand would “respect but not be scared” of. They have no reason to be scared, after running Australia extremely close in the drawn Chappell-Hadlee Series earlier in the month.ODI form guide (last five matches, most recent first)
India – LWWWW
New Zealand – NLLWWWatch out for …New Zealand’s top order: India’s bowlers managed to take only eight wickets in the two Twenty20 internationals despite the new ball swinging and seaming under lights. On both occasions, New Zealand’s top order approached their targets with a definite plan. The momentum was provided by Jesse Ryder, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor while Brendon McCullum batted steadily through the innings and scored match-winning half-centuries. McCullum’s innings in the two games was in stark contrast to his usual aggressive approach but he had the backing of both his captain and coach. “He is maturing as a player, is playing for the situation and when he’s playing well at the top of the order with Jesse [Ryder], then Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor, we’re certainly starting to get a pretty formidable top four,” said Moles.Sachin Tendulkar: It was in New Zealand that Tendulkar opened for the first time in one-day internationals, scoring 82 off 49 balls at Eden Park in 1994. He’s since changed as a batsman and his ODI appearances are less frequent but his presence still gives the batting line-up considerable muscle. Tendulkar’s three innings in Sri Lanka were cut short by poor lbw decisions and he has had no match practice to adjust to the seam and bounce of New Zealand’s pitches going into tomorrow’s game.Team newsNew Zealand have named a 12-man squad for the first three ODIs and ten of them are certainties to play. The top six that played the Twenty20 international will remain the same but medium-pace allrounder Grant Elliott will replace Nathan McCullum at No 7. Mills, who took nine wickets at 20 each in Australia, comes back from injury which means Ian Butler and Tim Southee will compete for a spot.New Zealand: 1 Jesse Ryder, 2 Brendon McCullum (wk), 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Jacob Oram, 6 Neil Broom, 7 Grant Elliott, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Ian Bulter/Tim Southee, 11 Iain O’Brien.Ishant Sharma has been all but ruled out of the first ODI because of a shoulder injury sustained during the second Twenty20 international. “We are thinking of giving Ishant rest so that he can be available for the whole series rather than play him at 70-80% fitness,” Dhoni said. His spot will be taken by either Praveen Kumar or Munaf Patel. The only other change will be Tendulkar, who takes Ravindra Jadeja’s spot from the Twenty20 line-up.India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Praveen Kumar/Munaf Patel, 11 Zaheer Khan.Pitch & conditionsNapier was warm on the eve of the match but there are showers forecast for Tuesday. The pitch at McLean Park “looked outstanding”, according to Vettori, who expected it to be full of runs. “I think traditionally around 280-300 is a par score so we have to work on that,” Vettori said. “If a team can restrict the other team to under 300, like the West Indies game the last time here, you’re in with a good chance.”Stats and trivia New Zealand have won 18 won ODIs, lost nine and tied two matches in Napier. However, their win-loss record at the venue since 2005 is 3-3. India have only won one out of four at this ground. India have a poor record in New Zealand, winning only nine matches out of 30. Against New Zealand they’ve won seven and lost 16, including six of the last eight. Among countries where they’ve played at least five games, only in the West Indies do they have a poorer win-loss ratio. In 11 day-night games at McLean Park, six have been won by the team chasing, and only three by the side batting first. Tendulkar has 16,440 ODI runs, 6765 more than New Zealand’s 12 players together.Taylor averages 136.50 in Napier, where he’s scored 273 runs in five innings at a strike-rate of 95.Quotes”The teams are pretty closely ranked at No. 3 and No. 4. India have been playing really well, but our home conditions suit us. So it’s going to be a pretty close series. I’d like to think we can win the series but I also know we will have to play some of our best cricket for that.”
“We are confident about each and every game. Even if we had won the last game, it wouldn’t have made a difference. We have to keep repeating the good work in every game of cricket.”

Celtic tried to sign Eran Zahavi

Celtic tried to sign Eran Zahavi during Neil Lennon’s tenure, the Northern Irishman has told sport5.

The lowdown

Zahavi currently plays for Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven, having joined on a free transfer from Chinese Super League outfit Guangzhou City in September 2020.

The striker, now 34, boasts an impressive record for the club with 24 goals and nine assists in his first 50 appearances.

He’s looking to fire PSV to the title and also help them progress through the Europa League.

Zahavi is Israel’s all-time top goalscorer with 31, seven clear of retired midfielder Yossi Benayoun.

The latest

Lennon, who left Celtic at the end of February, was asked whether he tried to sign Israeli players in addition to Nir Bitton and revealed that he ‘really liked’ Zahavi.

He hailed him as an ‘icon’ who ‘influences the other members of the team’.

Unfortunately, the club ‘never managed to reach an agreement’ with his camp, and so the deal didn’t materialise.

The verdict

Celtic missed out on a prolific goalscorer. In addition to his 24 goals for PSV, Zahavi bagged 103 in just 117 appearances for Guangzhou City and while the standard of the Chinese Super League may not be the highest, that return is certainly not to be sniffed at.

He probably would have taken to the Scottish top flight, but it seems his demands were simply too great for the Hoops to meet.

Kitchen and Jones put Auckland in pole position

He was given good support by captain Richard Jones, who scored 109, as they ended with a sizeable lead.Central Districts resumed the day on 169 for 8, but Daryl Tuffey ended any hopes of a late charge, removing Jacob Oram and Mitchell McClenaghan in quick succession.During the reply, Central Districts needed a similar bowling performance similar to Lance Shaw’s for Auckland, but their hopes took a knock when fast bowler Michael Mason was forced out of the attack due to injury. Mason though, did manage 3.4 overs, accounting for the in-form Jeet Raval for 4. McClenaghan then dismissed Rob Nicol for 12 as Auckland slipped to 39 for 2, before Kitchen and Jones seized control to put Auckland on course to secure their first first-class trophy since 2004-05.Kitchen, 25, has made a favourable impression in his maiden first-class season and he continued the good form, sharing a third-wicket stand of 184 with Jones. Kitchen hit 15 boundaries and three sixes during his 180-ball stay, scoring at a rate considerably quickly than Jones, who faced 220 balls for his 15th first-class century. While Kitchen fell to Brendon Diamanti, Jones was dismissed midway through the final session when he bottom-edged an attempted pull off Ewen Thompson to give wicketkeeper Bevan Griggs his third catch. It was finally left to wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins and Colin de Grandhomme to safely guide Auckland to stumps.

Conca – Flamengo

Celtic: Boyd slams ‘horrendous’ challenge

Former Celtic captain Tom Boyd has said that Motherwell’s Bevis Mugabi got away with a ‘horrendous’ challenge against the Hoops at the weekend.

The lowdown

David Turnbull was left in need of treatment after the tackle from centre-half Mugabi early in the second half of Celtic’s 2-0 win at Fir Park on Saturday.

The Motherwell defender escaped any form of punishment for the challenge, although he received a yellow card for a separate incident in stoppage time.

Turnbull had put Celtic two goals to the good after Filipe Jota’s opener and was able to complete the 90 minutes.

The latest

Boyd, who was on co-commentary duty for Celtic TV, was furious that Mugabi wasn’t shown a red card, and he believes there’s a pattern of referees failing to protect Hoops players.

“That is a red card,” he said, as quoted by 67 Hail Hail. “It is a red card. It’s horrendous, coming through.

“It’s the follow-through that he’s done. I think he’s got a bit of the ball but he’s come through and followed through and done Turnbull.

“And once again a player gets a free hit at us by referees not doing their duty of care to players that are wearing green and white hoops.”

The verdict

If Boyd’s fearful claim is justified, then it’s a concern for Celtic going forward. Without adequate punishment, there may not be that deterrent in place to prevent reckless challenges from opponents.

Turnbull may have emerged unscathed at the weekend, but in future there’s perhaps a risk of serious injury.

It should be said that no Celtic player features in the top 35 most-fouled players in the Premiership, but it’s less an issue of frequency and more of force.

Mesma situação do atacante Caio Monteiro.

Chanderpaul fights but West Indies crumble

Essex bowled West Indians out for 146 and closed the second day of the tour match at Chelmsford 292 runs in front with seven second-innings wickets in hand.

Cricinfo staff26-Apr-2009
ScorecardWest Indies’ preparations for the Lord’s Test, which starts in ten days, were blown off course as Essex bowled them out for 146 and closed the second day of the tour match at Chelmsford 292 runs in front with seven second-innings wickets in hand. While Alastair Cook took the opportunity of another chance in the middle to follow up his first-innings 46 with an unbeaten 74, the West Indians’ batting was nothing to write home about. Only Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who made a typically dogged 66, prevented a complete rout.Resuming on 24 for 1, within a quarter of an hour the tourists were 29 for 4. Dale Richards nibbled at Maurice Chambers in the third over, and two balls later Narsingh Deonarine was bowled off a big inside edge. Soon after Lendl Simmons played a loose swish outside off stump and gave wicketkeeper James Foster his second catch of the morning.Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash stopped the rot, but Nash looked out of sorts and was beaten more than once. It was not surprising when Chambers comprehensively bowled him for 14.Allrounder Dave Bernard decided the best form of defence was attack and thumped three fours, but with the ball still moving around it was always going to be a high-risk strategy; Jahid Ahmed replaced Chambers and straight away had Bernard caught behind. In the next over Mervyn Westfield had Darren Sammy leg-before for 1, and West Indians were 80 for 7.Chanderpaul is no stranger at having to marshal the tail, and he again did so well, mixing caution with outbursts of violence. In one over he cracked a four and a six of Ahmed, but support for him was simply not there.Lionel Baker became Chambers’ fourth, and career-best, victim when he was caught in front of his stumps by a yorker, and Westfield wrapped things up by removing the last two batsmen in quick succession, leaving Chanderpaul high and dry. With almost half the day to bat, Essex went about grinding the tourists’ noses further into the mud, despite the early loss of Jason Gallian, collecting a pair at the hands of Baker.Cook, who had appeared still troubled by his finger injury yesterday, looked carefree second time round, although he had a slice of luck when dropped by stand-in wicketkeeper Simmons before he had scored.Varun Chopra and Jaik Mickleburgh both got starts before getting out, but Cook found support from Foster, and the pair added an unbeaten 77 for the fourth wicket.
