Brendon McCullum was left to rue the loss of the man he stood in for asAustralia successfully – and ultimately, comfortably – defended theirChampions Trophy title at Centurion with a six-wicket win. New Zealand’sexcellent run to the final of the eight-nation tournament had come despitethe loss, at various stages of the event, of three key players to injury. The biggest loss, however, came in the final when Daniel Vettori had towithdraw with a hamstring injury. McCullum took over as captain and had anevening to forget, getting out for a duck and spilling a vital catch offCameron White just as his side was making a remarkable fight of it.Vettori was man of the match in the semi-final win over Pakistan, withthree wickets and a critical 41, the peak of a tournament in which he hadbeen an increasing influence as captain and player.New Zealand never recovered from the loss, a key moment in the matchbefore it had even begun. “I think losing Dan was a huge blow,”McCullum said. “He’s been instrumental for us with bat, ball and also with hiscaptaincy.”He’s a huge player for us who we look to not only forperformance but also for inspiration so to lose him was obviouslydisappointing. I still thought we had the calibre of players and also a good self-beliefin the unit that we’d be able to put Australia under pressure andhopefully come out with the result but it wasn’t to be.”Despite setting a target of only 201, New Zealand’s opening bowlers ShaneBond and Kyle Mills took two early wickets to put Australia under seriouspressure at 6 for 2. Shane Watson and Cameron White struggled throughtheir first spells, and were fortunate to survive. For that phase, hopes of anunlikely defence remained.”I thought they were brilliant to take out the first couple of wickets in the fashion that they did – it was a fantastic effort,” McCullum said of the pair. “They kept coming in and trying to give it their all but unfortunately we didn’t provide them with enough runs. After those two wickets we believed we could win and we were pretty pumped.”But McCullum’s drop may now rival that of Younis Khan’s in the semi-final, even if it was a much more difficult chance, in terms of how much it eventually cost. And McCullum said he was never in the right position to claim the catch. “It was obviously a crucial one. Unfortunately one wentdown today and I was responsible for it. I didn’t ever get set underneath it and in the end I was lucky to even get a hand on it.”Eventually, however, the disappointment will be replaced by considerable pride at having gone so far in this tournament, despite losing several key players. New Zealand lost their first match to South Africa and had since gone on a fascinating run, winning all their games, but each time losing another player to injury. The experience, McCullum believes, has brought them closer together as a unit and is something that they can take considerable positives from.”We’re proud of what we’ve achieved in terms of arriving at the final andgiving ourselves a chance to walk away with the silverware,” he said. “Weare disappointed with what happened today but are proud of the desire andthe passion through some tough times and I think if we can continue tocapture that then this team will certainly move forward. We’ve certainlycome together as a group over this last couple of weeks.”

Palace fans react to Andersen update

Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen missed Saturday’s defeat to Aston Villa with a hamstring injury.

However, the centre-back isn’t expected to be out long-term, according to The Athletic, an update which has had plenty of Palace fans talking on social media.

The 25-year-old missed his first Premier League game after signing over the summer, with the Eagles finally losing at home under Patrick Vieira. James Tomkins came in for the Denmark international and had plenty of Palace supporters lamenting his display following the defeat to Steven Gerrard’s side.

Matt Woosnam shared a story on Sunday claiming that Andersen will undergo more tests and will receive the results on Monday, with Palace hopeful of the defender returning soon. Vieira’s side are next in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Leeds United.

Collingwood ready for SA challenge

England’s tour of South Africa gets properly underway in Bloemfontein on Friday when they take on the Diamond Eagles in their opening warm-up match

England’s tour of South Africa gets properly underway in Bloemfontein on Friday when they take on the Diamond Eagles in their opening warm-up match, and for Paul Collingwood, the fixture provides the first chance to lay the team’s foundations ahead of what promises to be a hotly contested winter.Graeme Smith, South Africa’s captain, has been quick to crank up the psychological pressure ahead of a long tour that encompasses two Twenty20s, five ODIs and four Tests, but Collingwood believes that the task of taking on one of the top-ranked sides in the world will be more than enough to keep England’s thoughts on the job in hand.”I think there have been a few comments in the press, but we’re honestly 100% focused on what we need to do,” Collingwood told reporters at the conclusion of the team’s final training session at the University of the Free State. “We don’t need any more motivation, this is a huge series for us. Playing the No. 1 side in the world in their back yard is going to be a big challenge for us. We’re very, very excited to get going and looking forward to playing against them.”England’s form in limited-overs cricket is rarely better than patchy, although they can currently boast an improbable run of successes against South Africa, with five wins and a wash-out in their last six meetings. The most recent encounter was particularly galling for Smith’s men – a 22-run defeat in the Champions Trophy in September, a result that knocked South Africa out of the competition on home soil.Nevertheless, Collingwood believes that recent history will count for nothing when the teams reconvene next Friday in the first Twenty20 in Johannesburg. “I wouldn’t say we have a psychological edge, no. I think it’s safe to say they’re the No. 1 side in the world and you don’t become No. 1 just overnight. That takes a long time. They’re a very well-drilled unit, we know that.”I think we can take a lot of confidence from how we’ve played against them – the last five or six games, obviously we’ve won them all. But it’s going to be a tough series, and we’ve got a long way to go before we play to our best. But we know that if we do play to our best, we can beat anybody on the day. So hopefully we’ll have more days like that.”Collingwood will once again lead England in the Twenty20 leg of their tour, and believes that confident cricket is the best route to success against South Africa. “We’ve probably played our best cricket when we’ve been bold, going out there and taking it to the opposition,” he said. “But on the other hand, you have a bit of a hiccup playing like that all the time as well. We’ve just got to make sure we attack on the right times and on the right wickets.”Obviously we’re playing around the country on different wickets, so we’ll just have to adjust on each and every ground we turn up on. We want to start off well, we want to win the games, but also get the right kind of practice out of it as well.”

Journalist drops LUFC takeover update

After it was recently reported by The Athletic that the San Francisco 49ers have a deal in place to buy Leeds United for more than £400m with an option for 100% control of the Yorkshire club to pass to 49ers Enterprises by January 2024, which includes ownership of Elland Road, it seems as though fresh details have emerged on the matter.

What’s the news?

Leeds journalist Adam Pope recently shared a post on his Twitter page with some fresh details on the proposed takeover deal.

He said: “I understand that due to a multiple of revenues the overall price to take over Leeds could rise to £500m or more depending on factors such as future spending and league status.”

Pope also said that Andrea Radrizzani’s company Aser have the option to void the deal if they wish and that the current message seems to be 49ers and Leeds are “still working closely.”

Radz buzzing

Radrizzani completed his takeover of Leeds back in May 2017, ending Massimo Cellino’s three-year spell as the club’s owner after buying a 50% stake in January of the same year.

Since then, the Yorkshire club have managed to rise from the bottom half of the Championship at the end of the 2017/18 season to a top-half finish in the Premier League last season under Marcelo Bielsa’s guidance.

With the future in mind, it seems as though the club could be welcoming new owners in the near future to presumably push the club even further than they’ve managed to come under Bielsa and Radrizzani, which would surely delight a lot of Leeds fans.

However, taking into account what Pope had to say in his recent tweet, it seems as though the club’s final league position this season could have some sort of financial impact on what the takeover deal could look like.

Consequently, if Leeds can finish as high up the table as possible, this would lead to more money being put into the club, which would surely be music to Radrizzani’s ears. Not only would he have generated some fantastic results behind the scenes, keeping them in the division, but his pockets will be larger as a result.

Of course, the Italian’s first thoughts should be with the club but he will surely be motivated by the opportunity to gain an even greater source of income from Leeds’ accomplishments this term. The end goal for Radrizzani was always to cement their Premier League status and if he ends his tenure at Elland Road with that achieved, he will be a very happy man indeed.

However, the fact that Leeds are currently sitting in 15th position in the Premier League table with 16 points on the board from their opening 15 games of the season suggests that there is still some work to be done throughout the second half of the season if they want to match or even improve on their ninth-place finish in the league last season.

'Honesty has revived England' – Strauss

Given the amount of rain that has fallen on Durban’s Kingsmead ground in the past week, Andrew Strauss would be forgiven for wishing that the heavens remain open for another day, so that his team can cement their 2-1 series lead

Given the amount of rain that has fallen on Durban’s Kingsmead ground in the past week, Andrew Strauss would be forgiven for wishing that the heavens remain open for another day, so that his team can cement their 2-1 series lead, and emerge victorious for the first time ever in an ODI series in South Africa. But such is the journey that Strauss and his charges have been on in recent months, such an anticlimactic conclusion would be far from fitting. The team has been accused of many things of late, but being boring is not one of them. For Strauss himself, the Durban contest marks a notable milestone. Weather permitting, it will be his 100th ODI cap, and seeing as he had been jettisoned from the set-up after the 2007 World Cup, and spent a full two years thinking he’d never play in that format again, it is an achievement of some note. “To come back in and be part of this side and feel like we’re going somewhere is quite motivating,” he told reporters at Kingsmead. “I’m really enjoying my one-day cricket.”Enjoyment has been central to England’s mini-revival. Back in September, when a listless and Ashes-sated squad were battered 6-1 in their home series against Australia, it didn’t seem possible to inject any urgency into their performances. But then came a relocation to South Africa for the Champions Trophy, and suddenly the results began to stack up – albeit with the odd hefty set-back, as inflicted by the Aussies once again in the semi-final of that tournament, and by South Africa in their record-breaking run-fest at Newlands last week. But Strauss’s England teams are becoming accustomed to fighting back from adversity – witness their spirited response to being bowled out for 51 in Jamaica in February, or the way they claimed the Ashes despite being routed in two-and-a-half days in the penultimate Test at Headingley in August. According to the captain, such bouncebackability requires a culture of honesty within the squad, and an absence of ego.”Players have probably opened their eyes to the fact we have a long way to go and we’ve all got to be prepared for hard work if we’re going to get somewhere,” said Strauss. “We want an environment where we all push each other very hard – and in order to do that, we need to be honest with each other first and foremost. The environment we’re trying to create is one everyone has kind of accepted.”South Africa’s captain, Graeme Smith, is not noted for his chumminess with his English opposite numbers – having sparred with Nasser Hussain, Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen in recent times – but even he could not find much of a bone to pick with Strauss, despite the lingering issue of his refused runner during the Champions Trophy.”Andrew is an intelligent guy, with a lot of common sense,” said Strauss. “He’s provided a lot of stability for England and has gone about it the way we have expected. We’ve managed to keep a little hold on him in terms of his batting – he still hasn’t scored a fifty against South Africa in one-day cricket, but he’s the guy we expected him to be.”But, as Smith went on to point out, it doubtless helps England’s rebuilding efforts that the go-to men of recent times – most notably Andrew Flintoff and Pietersen – have been out of the limelight, which has allowed new stars such as Eoin Morgan and Jonathan Trott to find their feet without being overshadowed. “We don’t want three or four senior players running the show,” said Strauss. “We want everyone feeling comfortable enough to contribute, and also that it’s expected of them to contribute.”In the sport we play, there are always going to be people who are bigger characters than others or have bigger egos,” he added.”But a good environment is able to take that into account and still let people express themselves and get the best out of themselves.”One of those players with a larger-than-average ego is Pietersen, who has struggled to reassert himself since returning to the squad following his Achilles injury, and produced a particularly frenetic six-ball performance at Port Elizabeth on Sunday. And true to form, Smith cranked up the psychological pressure by reminding him of the reasons why he is not the most universally popular cricketer on this tour.”He’s obviously got a history through things that he’s done and said, and people are still getting over those emotions,” said Smith. “The crowds have been quite vocal again towards him. Ultimately, I think it’s just his job to get on with it and deal with that. It happens round the world these days.”

Man Utd could sign Maguire upgrade in Rudiger

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick could sign a major upgrade on Harry Maguire with Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger.

What’s the story?

According to reports from Sky Deutschland (via Sport Witness), United are one of a number of top European sides who are chasing the Germany international.

It’s claimed that the likes of PSG and Bayern Munich have joined Real Madrid in the race to sign the central defender, and that Rangnick’s side have now emerged as an additional contender for his signature.

Better than Maguire

While Maguire may be established as a cornerstone of this United defence, Rudiger’s arrival would see the club land a genuine upgrade on the England international.

As per Whoscored, the £100k-per-week German has averaged an impressive 7.00 match rating over the course of the Premier League this season, which far betters Maguire’s measly 6.56.

And, when you look at the key underlying numbers, it’s easy to see why.

Rudiger averages almost double the number of interceptions that Maguire does, while he also boasts a far higher average number of passes and key passes per game – the kind of ball-playing centre-back that could thrive under Rangnick.

The Chelsea man also wins more offsides per game too, a pointer of how his pace and reading of the game is slightly superior to that of Maguire.

Rudiger’s performances for the Blues has earned rave reviews from a number of people, not least former United man Rio Ferdinand, who waxed lyrical about just how good he has been in the top-flight.

He said (via the Metro): “Look at Rudiger, he’s arguably, since Tuchel has been there (at Chelsea), been the best defender in the Premier League. Him or (Ruben) Dias in that time. He’s been unbelievable, he’s like an animal.”

And, speaking to BILD, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was similarly effusive in his praise, saying: “Toni has established himself exceptionally since the first day we arrived. He is an absolute leader and plays at an incredibly high level.”

The £31.5m-rated star could bring some proven Premier League experience and quality to this United back-line, and a real upgrade on Maguire.

Meanwhile, Man Utd must move for this Serie A midfielder…
