Manish Pandey’s extraordinary catch in the morning is likely to become aYoutube classic but it was Dhawal Kulkarni’s humdrum batting that had more impacton the third day at the Gangothri Glades. Kulkarni more than tripled his previous best of 28 to leave Karnataka needing to pull off the biggest-ever chase in Ranji finals to get a seventh title.Wasim Jaffer’s captaincy record of never losing a Ranji game looked safewhen Ajit Agarkar nabbed three cheap wickets early in the chase, but anunbeaten half-century from Pandey kept the home side’s hopes of a miracle alive. It has already been a fantastic season for Pandey, only 12 short of becoming the tournament’s leading run-scorer, but the toughest test of his fledgling career came when he walked out after another Robin Uthappa failure left Karnataka at 46 for 3. The team was still nearly 300 short, and had only one more specialist batsman to come.Pandey had been dismissed for a golden duck in the first innings and the initial target of getting off a pair was achieved with a tuck to square leg off his first ball. The Karnataka batsmen had gone into a shell when the wickets started to tumble in the first innings, and his partner G Satish suffered the experience, being stuck on 16 for 29 deliveries. Pandey, though, exuded an aggressive mindset from the start, and galloped to 21 off 13 with three boundaries in four Aavishkar Salvi deliveries. The cover drives kept flowing from Pandey, even when the ball was wide outside off, and with Satish also getting a move on, the pair put on Karnataka’s first 50-partnership of the match. The game would have essentially been killed off when Pandey was on 44, but wicketkeeper Vinayak Samant grassed a regulation catch.Mumbai are still favourites for yet another title, though, thanks to Agarkar joining in the fast bowlers’ party in Mysore. He sent down a couple of unplayable legcutters in the first over of the chase, but it was a short and wide ball that fetched him the wicket of CM Gautam. KB Pawan played his second good-looking cameo before being trapped lbw, and Uthappa nicked an away-going delivery from Agarkar to end a forgettable season personally. In the morning, on a pitch that was still chicken soup for the fast bowler’s soul, Kulkarni and Abhishek Nayar endured a fraught forty minutes against R Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun. On the last ball of the 44th over, the eighth of the day, Kulkarni mistimed a drive that nearly lobbed back to the bowler Mithun. In the next over, Nayar slashed one just wide of gully and four deliveries later was squared up by a short ball but the edge fell just short of second slip. Six balls after that, Kulkarni wasreprieved by Pandey at gully. Both batsmen soon completed half-centuries and had pulled through 11 overs against Karnataka’s main threats. Mumbai looked set to bat the home side out of the game.Pandey then sparked Karnataka back to life with a blinder that was reminiscent of James Kirtley’s effort against India at Lord’s in 2002. Nayar swatted Sunil Joshi towards long-on, where Pandey sprinted to his right and flung himself into a full-length dive. He was still airborne when he clutched the ball with his outstretched right hand, and amazingly managed to hang on to it when he landed. The entire Karnataka team rushed to mob him, and Nayar started to walk off but was told by the Mumbai dressing-room to demand for the third umpire’s ruling on whether the catch was clean. After many replays, the umpires were satisfied and Nayar finally trudged off.Agarkar lasted all of four deliveries, and Iqbal Abdulla crunched a couple of boundaries before being done in by Vinay for 12. After those three quick wickets, it seemed Karnataka would be batting soon but, as usual, Mumbai found someone to resist. This time it was the pair of Kulkarni and Ramesh Powar. It was a freakish innings from Kulkarni, scoring almost all his runs on the off side – off his 17 boundaries, only the final one was on the leg-side, a swipe to square leg off Joshi. A resolute forward defence was mixed in with the free-swing at deliveries outside off. With the third seamer S Aravind proving ineffective and Joshi not threatening, Kulkarni helped himself to some easy runs against the old ball. Powar was happiest against the spinner, pulling and cutting him when he dropped short. The partnership grew to 63 and only the new ball could separate them. Vinay’s outswing cut Kulkarni’s game-turning innings 13 short of a century, and Mithun’s bouncer proved too much for last man Salvi.

Issa Diop let down West Ham vs Palace

With David Moyes’ West Ham United side heading into Saturday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace off the back of a highly impressive 4-1 win at Watford last time out, the Hammers boss will have undoubtedly been hoping for more of the same at Selhurst Park this evening.

Despite two late goals from Odsonne Edouard and Michael Olise, West Ham just about managed to cling on to all three points against their London rivals, as first-half strikes from Michail Antonio and a brace from Manuel Lanzini were enough to secure a 3-2 win in south London.

However, despite the victory, Moyes’ men simply should not have allowed Palace back into the game, with both Craig Dawson and Issa Diop once again turning in lacklustre displays in the heart of the West Ham backline.

With the January transfer window now open, and with the latter of this defensive duo being linked with a move away from the London Stadium this winter, considering his poor performance at Palace, the former France under-21 international could well have just played his last match for West Ham.

Lost 66% duels

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch on Saturday, the 24-year-old was not only at fault for both of Palace’s goals, but his metrics were also poor. The £10.8m-rated man enjoying a mere 24 touches of the ball – 13 fewer than Lukasz Fabianski between the West Ham sticks – completing just 13 of his 18 attempted passes and losing possession of the ball on five separate occasions.

The £61k-per-week defender also won just two of his six duels – a failure rate of 66% – conceded two fouls and found his man with just one of his four attempted long balls, with these returns seeing the Frenchman earn a disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.4 – the worst of any West Ham starter on the day.

Football.London journalist Tom Clarke also gave Diop a five in his own player ratings, as well as commenting of the centre-back’s performance: “Made some important blocks but was at fault for both Crystal Palace goals and his place could come under pressure if the Hammers bring in another defender during the transfer window.”

As such, with Diop having not previously grabbed the opportunity handed to him in the Hammers’ starting XI during the absence of the stricken Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma, the 24-year-old’s display against Palace will have done little to convince Moyes that Diop is indeed good enough for the Hammers – something which could see the defender on his way out of the club this month.

Can Amla guide the tourists home?

Everything that Hashim Amla has built so far in the series stands to fall apart tomorrow if he fails

The cruelty of sport cannot show up more starkly. Everything that Hashim Amla has built so far in the series, every patient, gritty minute he has spent at the crease for his 416 runs, stands to fall apart if he fails on Thursday. And, with a sunny day forecast, India’s primary aim will be to get rid of the batsman of the series. For Amla, the challenge couldn’t be any bigger: with just three more specialist batsmen for support, and two of them – Ashwell Prince and JP Duminy – struggling for form, he will have to come up with something special if South Africa are to snatch the No. 1 ranking from India.Amla has done everything that has been asked of him so far in India: in Nagpur, when South Africa’s series got off to a terrible start, losing the openers with only six runs on board, Amla retained his composure and, with Jacques Kallis, built the rest of the innings brick by brick. His unbeaten 253 set South Africa on the road to victory, which was completed by Dale Steyn’s awesome swing bowling.Even in Kolkata, but for Amla’s century on the first day, South Africa’s chances might have been washed away by now in the Hooghly. While his 114 was peppered with some aggressive and streaky strokes, today Amla came out more assured. It was evident in his strokeplay as he countered swing, spin, bounce, flight and some sledging without any fuss. Not once was he tentative. He got his eye in instantly and played with a freedom that can only come out of confidence. As the Indians grew desperate and tried to attack Amla replied with some aggressive strokes that forced MS Dhoni to spread his field. Kallis, whose 57-run partnership with Amla had soothed some frayed nerves in the South African camp, said the pair’s positive intent had affected India’s strategy. “They were probably trying to defend as well as take wickets and we need to keep doing what we did today,” Kallis said.Kallis said in Amla, South Africa possessed the best pilot to see them to safety. “He is mentally very strong, has good powers of concentration, knows his limitations and knows his gameplan very well and executed it very well.”Amla has had some experience already of being involved in a few rescue acts. In the first Test of the 2008 series in England, South Africa had been forced to follow-on. Only Ashwell Prince had shown some character in the first dig with a stubborn century. But second time around the visitors bounced back strongly with centuries by the opening pair of Graeme Smith, Neil McKenzie and Amla. Even if McKenzie led the fightback on that occasion, Amla’s knock was an important one, too, considering he had to survive for a similar duration (as in Kolkata), against a buoyant home side. The England fast bowlers tried unsettling him with incessant short stuff, but Amla remained unflappable and unbeaten as South Africa escaped with a draw. It was an important result as Smith’s men gathered confidence from that effort and eventually won the series 2-1.The only difference now is the roles are reversed with Amla needing to lead the resistance. Of the batsman remaining, de Villiers already has a fifty in the series so he would not sweat as much as Prince and Duminy who have been out-of-touch so far. But both men have played some fighting knocks in the recent past. Prince hit a spirited century in the final Test of the Australian series at home two years back in the absence of Smith. Duminy announced his abundant talent in his first two Tests including a 166 at the MCG which helped South Africa to become the first team to beat the Aussies at home in 16 years.”It is also an opportunity for Ashwell and JP to turn their form around,” Kallis said, adding South Africa have the wherewithal to survive the Indian challenge. “There is no reason we can’t survive 90-odd overs. The guys have good gameplans and if we can just keep positive and keep the pressure on India anything can happen.”But Amla holds the controls and Kallis said he can’t now afford to lose it. “He has been in fantastic form. The biggest lesson of all when you are in good form is don’t give it away.”

Sky Sports drop Digne to West Ham news

Taking to Twitter, Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has shared some West Ham United transfer news involving Everton defender Lucas Digne.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye new left-back…

Taking into account West Ham’s current injury list, it appears manager David Moyes and head of recruitment Rob Newman have now earmarked the potential signing of a new left-back as well as a centre-half and striker in January (The Daily Mail).

Aaron Cresswell’s back problem is much worse than originally feared according to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee with the Englishman apparently chipping a bone.

This has prompted links to the likes of Antonee Robinson and Digne as the Hammers now weigh moves to bolster another problem position.

Sharing the latest, Dorsett has backed West Ham’s interest in the latter man with a Twitter claim.

The Latest: Sky Sports reporter shares Digne news…

Taking to social media, he name-dropped the Hammers as contenders for his signature alongside the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle United and a fourth unnamed club.

“#cfc, #whufc, #nufc and a 4th as yet unnamed Prem club all interested in #efc left back Lucas Digne,” he explained.

“#napoli wanted him too, but only on loan which Everton won’t go for. #efc want £30m for him, and will sell after fall out with Benitez over tactics.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

Compared to West Ham’s current crop, the France international could certainly come in and do a job for Moyes based off his numbers.

Only Arthur Masuaku (3.1) has averaged more tackles per 90 than Digne (2.5) this season in the Premier League with the 28-year-old also proving a threat going forward (WhoScored).

Indeed, he is level with striker Michail Antonio in terms of key passes made in the final third (1.7) – highlighting his real attacking threat and potential suitability for Moyes.

Pundit Frank McAvennie has also raved over Digne whilst urging Newcastle to complete a move, branding him a ‘big name’ player who ‘the fans will love’ (Football Insider).

Having amassed nearly half a century of caps in a competitive France squad, it’s clear he could also be a brilliant addition at the London Stadium.

Waqar Younis signs as Pakistan coach

Waqar Younis has signed on as the new coach of the Pakistan side, in the process becoming the fourth coach of the team in three years

Waqar Younis has signed on as the new coach of the Pakistan side, in the process becoming the fourth coach of the team in three years. The former fast bowler has been in negotiations with the PCB over the last few days, but confirmed that he will now replace Intikhab Alam on a tenure that sees him through to December 2011.Waqar, who is based in Sydney currently, will arrive in Lahore next week to begin work, the first assignment of which will be to prepare Pakistan’s defense of the World Twenty20 crown in the Caribbean in April-May. “I’ve signed on and agreed to the contract,” Waqar told Cricinfo. “I’ll be arriving in Lahore from next week to begin work.”Though the PCB had talked of – and approached – at least one foreign option to replace Intikhab in the aftermath of the tour to Australia, Waqar emerged as a favourite to take over last week. He was sent a contract over the weekend and though there initially were a few sticking points, it is believed the chinks have been ironed out.”I’m absolutely honoured to take on the role and it is a very exciting challenge,” Waqar said. “Hopefully I can deliver on the role. Cricket has given me a lot over the years and I want to give something back to cricket and country now. I’ve always played my cricket with passion and aggression and I want the team to play like that.”This will be Waqar’s first official role as head coach at any competitive level, though he has worked with Pakistan twice previously as a bowling coach. The first was a stint under Bob Woolmer between March 2006 and January 2007, a successful stretch during which a number of bowlers prospered. The second time was on the recent Australian tour, where he was one of three coaches in a set-up headed by Intikhab and that appointment was for the series only. But Waqar believes his relative lack of experience in an expansive role will not be a hindrance, hinting that he would relish the broader sweep such a post would afford him. “I’ll probably have more control of various situations and have a say in more decisions. I really enjoyed my time as bowling coach, especially the first one under Bob.”The last one was a little more difficult but I’m confident I can deliver. I learnt a lot from Bob during his time and I’m hoping I can put that to good use.”
