Wolves could sign Hwang in January

Wolves could make Hwang Hee-chan’s loan move to Molineux a permanent one in the January transfer window, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

The Lowdown: Hwang impressing on loan

The 25-year-old joined Wanderers on a temporary basis from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig last summer, in order to earn regular minutes.

Hwang has impressed for Wolves since arriving, scoring four goals in 11 Premier League starts and adding real quality and pace alongside the likes of Francisco Trincao and Raul Jimenez in attack.

Wanderers have the option to sign the South Korean permanently this summer, but in order to stop another team from doing the same early, they may need to get the deal done this month.

The Latest: Permanent move imminent?

According to Bild [via Sport Witness], Wolves are keen on getting the move completed, with Hwang likely to cost €16.5million (£13.8m).

The report states that they are ‘considering pulling the purchase option’ in January, with that scenario also thought to suit Leipzig.

The Verdict: Makes perfect sense

Admittedly, Hwang’s form has dipped a little in recent months, not helped by a current injury problem – he hasn’t scored since October, against Leeds United – but signing him permanently is still a no-brainer.

This is a player who has scored 52 goals and registered 35 assists in 131 career appearances as a centre forward and he has shone out on the left for Wolves too.

With Adama Traore potentially moving away from Molineux this month, the funds would be generated to easily acquire Hwang’s signature, so it may not be a financial issue in the slightest.

'A good decision even if we lose T20 World Cup'

The strict action taken by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) against the top players for their dismal performance during the tour of Australia, has drawn mixed reactions from former players

Cricinfo staff10-Mar-2010Inzamam-ul-Haq: “What sort of message are we delivering to the world by taking such decisions at a time when nobody is agreeing to come to Pakistan to play cricket?”•AFP

Players’ power was affecting team’s performance badly. There was no discipline in the team and it had become impossible for the board to tackle the players. That was why the board has been budging down to players’ pressure. The decision is beneficial even if we lose in the Twenty20 World Cup. The move has a lesson for budding players. They will always have in mind that if senior players can be punished, then they too are no exceptions
Zaheer Abbas,
Younis and Yousuf should go to court to challenge the decision. This is not a good decision for Pakistan cricket. The board is not setting a good example before young cricketers. I don’t understand the thinking that led them to take such a decision. The committee comprised employees of the PCB and there was no neutral person in it. What sort of message are we delivering to the world by taking such decisions at a time when nobody is agreeing to come to Pakistan to play cricket?
Inzamam-ul-Haq,
Our main problem was discipline, but barring players, I am not sure, it doesn’t look nice to just end the international careers of such talented players. It is surprising, but at the end of the day, the PCB needed to make an example and took a step to clean up the lack of discipline in the team. I am sure the players will challenge the life ban though.
Ramiz Raja,
Younis I think has been treated unfairly for long now, what was his fault and yet he is banned for life. This is not the way to improve things in Pakistan cricket. If things were so wrong in Australia then what was the team management doing. I am getting a feeling that the board has taken these decisions to save themselves after the recent poor performances and controversies.Rashid Latif,
It’s the end of players’ power from our national team, which is a very good sign. From now on, every player will be very careful because they know that they can be fined or banned if they violate discipline. Younis and Yousuf had played their innings in international cricket as they have got too old, but Naved and Akmal should have also been banned for one year.
Sarfraz Nawaz,

West Ham keen on centre-back duo

West Ham remain interested in potential January moves for Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Liverpool’s Nat Phillips, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye up January additions

The Hammers may be enjoying another excellent season but there is certainly a need to bring in reinforcements in the January transfer window, such is the extent of their injury crisis in the heart of defence.

First-choice centre-backs Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma are both currently out, and the former is expected to be missing for most or all of the campaign.

With David Moyes hoping his team can push for a top-four finish and go far in the Europa League, surely at least one new face in that area is required.

The Latest: Journalist makes key claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that there is interest in both Tarkowski and Phillips, even though signing the Burnley man could prove to be difficult:

“Everything I’m told about West Ham remains focused around the centre-back options that we’ve heard before.

“There’s Tarkowski, who will obviously be really hard to get out of Burnley, and Nat Phillips.”

The Verdict: Phillips an exciting option

If Burnley refuse to sell Tarkowski this month, Phillips could be a shrewd investment instead, with the Liverpool man clearly not a key figure at Anfield, making just three appearances all season.

The 24-year-old showed what he is capable of last season, however, filling in admirably in the absence of injured trio Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, earning plenty of praise from Jurgen Klopp, who called the young Englishman ‘absolutely insane’ after a win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Phillips averaged a whopping 5.6 aerial duels won and 4.8 clearances per game in the Premier League in 2020/21, highlighting why he could come in as an assured option for West Ham, still with plenty of potential left to fulfil as he is yet to enter his prime.

In other news, some West Ham fans are buzzing over a £200million claim. Read more here.

Jadeja violated team's core values – Rajasthan

Rajasthan Royals have said that they had reservations about playing allrounder Ravindra Jadeja even if the IPL had not banned him for a year

Rajasthan Royals have said that they had reservations about playing allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, because he breached his contract, even if the IPL had not banned him for a year. Rajasthan’s chief executive Sean Morris said Jadeja, who failed to renew his contract for 2010 and was found negotiating with Mumbai Indians, had ignored the franchise’s core values and now had to pay for his mistake.”To tell you exactly what our position was: While we believe we should fight for the young players, because we have invested in them, we still had to consider whether we would allow him [Jadeja] to be part of the Rajasthan Royals team,” Morris said in Nagpur on the eve of Rajasthans’s clash with Deccan Chargers. “We have got really strong values within Rajasthan Royals, lot of loyalty and integrity within the team and the squad, so as a team we still would have made a decision whether to allow him to play or not.”The IPL governing council had banned Jadeja for a season at the behest of BCCI president Shashank Manohar after details about him violating rules came out in the open. They allowed the player to appeal against the decision and also heard representations from the Rajasthan and Mumbai franchises. Arun Jaitley, a lawyer who is also part of the governing council, chaired the hearing, upheld the ban and released a strongly-worded verdict. “The player contrived a situation to his advantage by breaching the player trading rules and not signing his third year contract for IPL 2010 with the Rajasthan Royals,” Jaitley said. Rajasthan had lodged the initial complaint and “further alleged that he was in communication with the Mumbai Indians team in violation of disciplinary rules.”In Shane Watson’s absence, and injuries to Graeme Smith and Dmitri Mascarenhas, Rajasthan were struggling after the first few matches. Shane Warne, Rajasthan’s captain, admitted Jadeja’s all-round skills were being missed but they had to comply with the IPL’s decision. According to Rajasthan the ban had “adversely affected the franchise even though they were not at fault”. Morris said they did grow desperate when Smith and Mascarenhas were forced to return home. “It is one of the few hurdles that we faced with a few injuries at the beginning of the tournament all at once,” he said. “But we got over it.”However, Morris said Rajasthan had forgotten the Jadeja episode and were happy to have been the bridge which allowed him to break into the Indian team. “We brought him on as a player hopefully for the benefit of Indian cricket. We firmly believe in investing in young Indian players. If you look at the overseas players that we have, they spend an awful lot of time working with young Indian players for our benefit, to make us a better team, but we also hope that leaves some form of legacy.”My final point on Jadeja is it is over. Good luck to him for the World Cup (ICC World Twenty20). We hope that he is a big success for India.” When asked if that meant Rajasthan would not bid for Jadeja during the player auction later this year, Morris denied that would be the case. “No, what I meant was about the Jadeja ban for this season,” he said.

Liverpool hire mental health consultant

A number of Liverpool supporters have been voicing their approval over the news that the Reds have hired a mental health consultant to help players.

Footballers may live a hugely privileged life but they are still human beings who feel the stresses and strains of everyday living.

There is enormous scrutiny on everything they do, both on and off the pitch, with their every move analysed and any step out of line potentially leading to vitriolic criticism.

Social media can be particularly bad in terms of online abuse of players, with individuals receiving horrible criticism after a poor performance or a bad result.

According to The Daily Mail [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Liverpool have brought in a specialist to help tackle mental health struggles from social media abuse, in what has been hailed an “important” move by the club.
