Liverpool eyeing Frenkie de Jong move

FSG are willing to sanction Julian Ward’s next big Liverpool move in the shape of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer, according to Sport.

The Lowdown: Previous links

De Jong, who is valued at a whopping £63m by Transfermarkt, has been linked with a move to Anfield previously, with news outlets on the continent claiming in December that the Reds are ‘crazy’ about signing him.

Reports all the way back in 2019 suggested that Jurgen Klopp was offered the 24-year-old’s services but turned down the chance to sign the central midfielder.

He has since gone on to make 120 appearances for Barcelona after leaving Ajax, but it seems as if the Reds are still tracking his situation.

The Latest: Liverpool keen

According to Spanish outlet Sport, both Liverpool and Bayern Munich are willing to pay for De Jong in the summer.

Ward, replacing Michael Edwards, was crucial in bringing Luis Diaz to Anfield according to Klopp, and it seems as though he now has his next target.

However, the report adds that the player is happy at the Nou Camp and sees ‘a lot of future’ with the Catalan giants.

The Verdict: Needed?

The Reds have seven midfield options at this moment in time, one of which is James Milner, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also be into the final 12 months of his deal in the summer while Thiago and Naby Keita have both struggled with injuries, so a marquee midfield addition of someone like De Jong could be a wise call.

There’s no doubting his ability either, with Dutch legend Ronald Koeman hailing his maturity at a young age as ‘amazing’, while Barcelona boss Xavi called him ‘extraordinary’.

However, you could argue that bringing in De Jong could hinder Harvey Elliott’s development into a first-team regular under Klopp – the Dutchman has often been deployed in that slightly more advanced role rather than the defensive position he played at Ajax.

It will be interesting to see if FSG decide to make a move for the Barcelona man, and it appears as if they are willing to pay big for a player who still has over four years remaining on his contract.

In other news: Liverpool in pole position to sign ‘extraordinary’ player who Klopp absolutely loves.

Big Gareth Bale to Spurs update

According to reports from Spain, as translated and shared by TEAMtalk, it appears that a pretty big transfer claim has come to light involving Tottenham Hotspur and former hero Gareth Bale.

The Lowdown: Bale re-joins for 2020/2021…

The Wales international star, after leaving north London for Real Madrid in a then-world record £85.3 million deal (BBC), went on to enjoy a trophy-laden spell with the Galacticos before re-joining Tottenham on loan last season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Bale, under former boss Jose Mourinho and his eventual interim replacement Ryan Mason, finished the 2020/2021 Premier League campaign as Spurs’ third-most prolific player in terms of goals and assists combined (11G, 2A).

However, his stay was also marred somewhat by physical issues with Mourinho even calling out the 32-year-old for giving a false depiction of his fitness levels at one stage.

Despite a mixed return, a major claim has come out of Spain involving Bale and another reunion with Spurs under new boss Antonio Conte.

The Latest: Tottenham reach Bale agreement ‘months ago’…

As per sources on the continent, via TEAMtalk, ahead of leaving the Bernabeu this summer when his contract finally expires at the end of June, the forward has already reached an agreement to join Tottenham.

Bale and Spurs apparently had this in place ‘months ago’ – but the former Lilywhites man didn’t come in January as he wanted to run down his current deal at Madrid whilst continuing to collect his bumper pay packet.

The Verdict: Right move?

This is a pretty big claim going by his most recent spell at Tottenham, and despite some bright moments, it’s hard to see him fitting under Conte at N17.

Going by Bale’s recent fitness record, the Italian’s extreme, highly-demanding coaching methods physically could be too much and it’s hard to see him being a regular for that reason.

Scoring a club career total of 183 goals from out wide and further forward, he managed to impress at Euro 2020 for Wales in parts and there is no question he still has quality in abundance.

The point of contention is around application and whether he can be an asset under Conte in the rigorously competitive English top flight.

On a free deal, barring Bale’s potentially large salary, this is a fairly low risk move financially for Tottenham but an arguable gamble in terms of the player’s N17 legacy.

Vaas carries Northamptonshire to first win

Chaminda Vaas starred with bat and ball as Northamptonshire finally broke their duck in this year’s Friends Provident t20 with a 21-run win over Worcestershire

11-Jun-2010
ScorecardChaminda Vaas starred with bat and ball as Northamptonshire finally broke their duck in this year’s Friends Provident t20 with a 21-run win over Worcestershire. He hit a fluent 54, including three huge sixes, as a makeshift opener as the hosts posted a total of 143 for 8 from their 22 overs.Vaas went on to grab two wickets with the ball as Northamptonshire ended a run of three straight defeats by restricting the visitors to 122 for 8. Worcestershire bowler Jack Shantry had been the pick of their attack, taking two for 24, but his batsmen badly let him down with Vaas and James Middlebrook doing the damage for Northants.Northamptonshire won the toss and chose to bat in glorious conditions and former New Zealand international Lou Vincent made a breezy 18 before hitting James Cameron to Shantry at mid on. Cameron then dropped Vaas twice, first at deep extra cover then deep midwicket, both off Australia spinner Steve Smith, as Vaas and Ireland wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien added 71 runs between them.Vaas went past 50 off 39 balls by smashing Gareth Andrew for six over mid-wicket but perished by blasting the same bowler to Smith at long off. O’Brien departed soon after when his off-stump was taken out by Moeen Ali before Northamptonshire captain Andrew Hall smashed stand-in Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell to Alexei Kervezee at deep midwicket.Shantry claimed two wickets in the 19th over by bowling Rob White for 13 before Nicky Boje tamely struck his first ball to Mitchell at extra cover. In the final over, David Willey was run out by Cameron at backward point before Smith caught Alex Wakely at long off against Andrew.Chasing 144, Worcestershire got off to a bad start when Jack Manuel, who was making his senior debut, made just three before launching Vaas to Boje at deep square-leg. Ex-skipper Boje then bowled Phil Jaques for 10 and an awful running mix-up in the ninth over involving Ali and Kervezee led to Boje running out the former for 19.Smith made nine before he hit James Middlebrook to Jack Brooks at deep cover and Vaas removed Kervezee’s middle stump to leave the visitors on 72 for 5. Worcestershire’s sorry procession continued when Cameron made just a single before he was bowled by Middlebrook as the spinner ended his impressive spell. Two more wickets fell in the last two overs with Mitchell hammering Hall to Brooks at deep midwicket and Andrew then struck his first ball to Vincent at extra cover.

Ponting asks for UDRS across the board

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has called on the ICC to make sure the Umpire Decision Review System is used in every series, after the Pakistan board did not put the system in place for the neutral series in England

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has called on the ICC to make sure the Umpire Decision Review System is used in every series, after the Pakistan board did not put the system in place for the neutral series in England. As the “home” board, the PCB is in charge of such matters, and the UDRS will be used for the upcoming Pakistan-England series. However, it is also not being implemented in the Sri Lanka-India Test series, which prompted the Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara to express his disappointment. Ponting has also become used to the UDRS and although the on-field umpires had a reasonably good match at Lord’s, he would have preferred consistency across series.”I got my point across at the referee’s meeting before the series. I think that even the ICC could have stepped in on this occasion,” Ponting said. “It’s a financial thing at the end of the day, that’s the reason we are not using it. I thought the ICC could have come in and done something about it. It hasn’t eventuated so we’ve just got to get on with it now.”You do get used to playing a certain way and having some decisions sent back for a referral. But that’s all we’ve got so we just have to get on with it and let the umpires do their job out in the middle. I think Pakistan just didn’t get around to getting it organised quick enough or something. That was the way it was explained to us at the referee’s meeting.”The cost of the UDRS is one of the major stumbling blocks, and there are also issues around the availability of the equipment. However, given that the system was rolled out properly after a lengthy trial process, Ponting believed the ICC should have stepped in to ensure it was used.”I don’t know the ins and outs of the whole thing and the way it’s being run,” Ponting said. “In a series like this one which is a neutral one there is always going to be that dispute about who’s paying for it and should we use it. It was brought in as compulsory in Test cricket 12 months ago now. I felt if it was ever left up in the air that someone should have stepped in and made sure that it actually happened.”Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of the ICC, defended the current process. Speaking on Test Match Special last week, he said there were several issues that determined whether the UDRS was to be used in the Pakistan-Australia series.”I understood there were some technical difficulties in getting it up and running before the first Test got going,” Lorgat said. “The way we fashion the current scenario is for the home team in consultation with the visitors to determine if they want DRS or not. That’s part of the process that we’re walking to introduce it on a permanent basis.”

Newcastle dealt Javier Manquillo blow

Newcastle have been hit by a hammer blow as an update on Javier Manquillo’s injury situation has been dropped…

What’s the latest?

According to The Chronicle, the Spaniard is unlikely to be fit enough to play against West Ham in the Premier League this weekend.

The report claims that he has suffered ligament damage in his ankle and is set to be absent on Saturday, following on from Kieran Trippier’s broken foot that will see him miss a number of weeks.

Newcastle will be fuming

Eddie Howe will surely be left fuming by this news as it means that he has lost his two first-choice right-backs in the same week.

Trippier’s knock was a gigantic blow for the Magpies as he has been sublime since making his move to the club from Atletico Madrid in January. Newcastle are unbeaten in his four Premier League appearances and he has averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.87. He has produced two goals and managed 24 tackles and interceptions in that time, showing that he has had a big impact at both ends of the pitch.

Therefore, Howe was already rocked by one major issue and now he has to deal with another setback because of Manquillo’s apparent unavailability. The Spanish defender has averaged a score of 6.61 in the top-flight, which places him seventh in the squad overall and shows that he is nowhere near the standard of the English international.

However, there is another drop-off between him and the player who could now be forced to play at right-back against the Hammers – Emil Krafth. The Sweden international has averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.33 for the Magpies, proving that he has been nowhere near good enough for Steve Bruce or Howe.

He is ranked as the 24th player in the squad in terms of WhoScored ratings, which is 17 places lower than Manquillo. Whereas, Trippier is only six places above the ex-Liverpool full-back and this suggests that this injury update is a hammer blow for Howe as he could be left with little option but to select Krafth, who is far worse than his other two right-backs.

The dud’s performances this season suggest that he will be a liability against West Ham if he is in the starting XI on Saturday and this is what will leave Howe fuming ahead of the match. He will surely be hoping that Manquillo is able to return to training next week and be available for their clash with Brentford.

AND in other news, £9.8m wasted: “Out of his depth” Newcastle dud has been taking liberties for 131 weeks…

Leeds: James Garner stars in latest Nottingham Forest win

Leeds have recently been linked with Nottingham Forest loanee James Garner, and his performance against Coventry City on Wednesday evening will certainly have caught Victor Orta’s eye.

This forms part of our Transfer Watch series, where we react to a performance from a current transfer target.

The Lowdown: Leeds links

Garner, who is on loan at the City Ground from Manchester United, has been linked with a move to Elland Road in recent weeks.

Leeds, and therefore Victor Orta, are thought to be monitoring the 21-year-old closely ahead of a possible summer swoop.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Manchester United may consider a permanent sale over the coming months, with Jesse Marsch looking to bolster his midfield options ahead of his first full season in charge.

The Latest: Stunning display

Forest recorded a fourth successive Championship win on Wednesday to consolidate their place in the playoffs, defeating Coventry City 2-0. Garner was man of the match, as per SofaScore, recording a rating of 8.4/10.

The central midfielder scored Forest’s second on the hour mark and also registered five key passes (the most in the match), made four interceptions (second-most) and three tackles (third-most).

The Verdict: Sign

You’d expect that Garner’s display will have caught the eye of Orta given the recent transfer links, and should Forest fail in their push for promotion, a move for the Manchester United man over the summer could be a shrewd call.

Of course, the Red Devils will need to be willing to part ways with Garner on a permanent basis, and if they are, a move to Elland Road looks to make sense for all parties, banking the parent club a profit on a player far down the pecking order and granting the player first-team football in the top flight.

Marsch meanwhile has just four senior midfield options at this moment in time, with Garner able to turn out as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder.

He could be the perfect partner for Kalvin Phillips in a double pivot next season, with also Garner showing an impressive eye for goal with his goal contributions now up to nine in a Forest shirt.
