The tournament director of the 2011 World Cup, Ratnakar Shetty, has said that the development of the stadiums was on schedule and that the governments of the host countries – India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – were working together to ensure an “incident free” competition.Several venues in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are being redeveloped or constructed from scratch and Shetty was confident they would be ready before the December 31 deadline.”We are monitoring the development of all the World Cup venues, particularly the re-development of stadiums. The events are properly chartered and time is of the essence for us,” Shetty said. “The World Cup has been previously held in the subcontinent in 1987 and 1996, and our aim is to deliver a World Cup remembered as a memorable event for spectators to enjoy and the teams that are participating to be at full strength.”In February, the ICC had written to the BCCI expressing concerns over facilities at Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. Andy Atkinson, the ICC pitch consultant, reportedly suggested several changes that need to be undertaken ahead of the tournament. In June, the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo was deemed to be behind schedule by an ICC delegation in terms of readiness of the pitch, but progress at the two new venues in Pallekele and Hambantota was assessed to be on track.Shetty also said that the hosts were working towards improving the security for the event. “Each of the countries now has full-time security advisors and they are preparing the national security plans as well as the tournament security plans. The three governments are working out to ensure that this will be an incident free 2011 World Cup.”Shetty was in Colombo for the naming of the 2011 World Cup’s mascot – a baby elephant called ‘Stumpy’. The ICC had conducted an online competition inviting the public to suggest a name for the mascot.

Goldson slammed during Rangers v Braga

Former Glasgow Rangers defender Richard Foster has been left slamming the defending by Connor Goldson that led to a Braga goal on Thursday night.

The Lowdown: Semi-final awaits

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team are through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League after beating Braga 3-1 on the night, meaning that they went through 3-2 on aggregate.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They made hard work of it at times though at Ibrox, conceding a late goal while the visitors were down to ten men to force extra-time, but then got the job done as the Portuguese outfit had another man sent off.

The Latest: ‘Poor’ defending

Speaking on BBC Sportsound (via BBC Sport 21:58pm), Foster was not impressed with Goldson’s defending for Braga’s goal scored by David Carmo, claiming that it was ‘so poor’, and that he lost his man ‘so easily’ and ‘doesn’t stop him running’:

“The defending of the corner was so poor. It was very similar to how poor Braga have been all night at corners. I don’t know how Connor Goldson loses his man so easily, or doesn’t stop him running. Now Braga have something to hold on to.”

The Verdict: Can do better

Goldson will know that he could have done better for their goal, and there were other aspects of his game that were not quite up to scratch.

The central defender lost out on two of his duels, while he also made no interceptions and was inaccurate with a team-high 12 of his long balls, losing possession 22 times in total (SofaScore).

Nonetheless, all of his focus will now be on their Scottish Cup semi-final against bitter rivals Celtic on Sunday afternoon.

Rory Hamilton-Brown was 28not out and the pair had added 67 for the fourth wicket.Surrey had elected to bat first, despite the heavily overcast conditions andwere reduced to 45 for three as Jon Lewis, Anthony Ireland and Gemaal Hussainshared the wickets.Pietersen came in at 37 for 2 and got off the mark first ball with a shotthrough the covers for three. The England batsman then off-drove Ireland forfour and whipped Hussain through midwicket for another boundary as he got intohis stride. He was unbeaten on 16 at lunch, with Surrey 68 for 3, and after rain haddelayed the resumption until 1.40pm he took two more fours off the first over ofthe afternoon session from James Franklin, both the result of well-timed cutsoff short deliveries.Pietersen was soon confident enough to be marching down the wicket toexperienced seamer Jon Lewis and looked in little trouble in the bowler-friendlyconditions.When Ireland dropped short, Pietersen pulled him for six over deep backwardsquare. By the time the umpires abandoned play for the day at 5pm he had alsostruck five fours in facing 59 balls. Hamilton-Brown was typically positive in scoring his runs off 37 deliveries, with three fours, and together the pair dug Surrey out of a hole.A stop-start day was signalled when the players had to run for cover after justone ball. The game restarted at 11am and was uninterrupted until lunch.Lewis made the breakthrough with the total on 15 as Jason Roy edged to ChrisDent at second slip and departed for 11. Opening partner Tom Lancefield followed for the same score when he got a leading edge to Ireland and Hamish Marshall accepted the catch running around from third slip.Mark Ramprakash had made 15 when he was undone by a lifter from Hussain, whichresulted in a catch for former Surrey wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty. After lunch there was 25 minutes play before more rain, which came with Surrey93 for 3 and Pietersen on 26. The players returned to the field at 3.35pm only to be forced off again 10 minutes later just after Pietersen had hit his six. That proved the final action as the clouds gathered and drizzle remained in the air.

Newcastle must sign Seko Fofana

Newcastle United moved 12 points clear of the bottom three in the Premier League with a dramatic win against Leicester on Sunday.

Bruno Guimaraes’ last-minute winner sealed the three points for the Toon as his double turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win for Eddie Howe.

They are now all but safe from relegation as they have given themselves a huge gap to the bottom three with six games left to play.

This means that Howe can begin to plot what he wants to do in the transfer market this summer in order to push on in 2022/23 to compete higher up in the table instead of battling against the drop.

One player who has recently been touted with the Magpies is RC Lens central midfielder Seko Fofana as PIF look to bolster the club’s options in the middle of the park.

Imagine him & Wilson

Newcastle must secure a deal to sign the Ivorian because he can form a dream partnership with Callum Wilson in black and white next term.

Fofana, who is reportedly valued at £25m, has shown off his attacking quality in Ligue 1 this season and the prospect of him and Wilson linking up with each other through the middle of the pitch is an exciting one.

Journalist Said Amdaa recently lauded the gem. He Tweeted: “Seko Fofana. Unplayable in midfield with monster activity. Recoverer/scorer. Very reliable, the captain did not miss any match with Lens. His absence from the CAN with the (Ivory Coast) cost him 1st place for this title of best AFRICAN player in L1.”

In Ligue 1, he has scored seven goals and created 1.1 chances per match for Lens, whilst also completing 1.9 dribbles per game. This shows that he has the ability to break forward from midfield to make things happen in the final third and

Wilson, meanwhile, is Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League this season with six goals to his name in just 14 appearances. This is after he managed 12 goals and five assists in 23 starts in 2020/21 for the Toon, showing that he can be a deadly option at this level.

Now, imagine Fofana playing as a number eight or as a 10 behind Wilson up front with both of the breaking forward on the counter-attack to punish teams next season. They have both proven that they are dangerous in the final third and teams will surely be worried about facing the Magpies if they have that level of firepower in their XI.

South Africa win fourth match in a row

A round-up of the action from the fourth day of the ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge where West Indies, South Africa and Pakistan all recorded victories

Scorecard
Isobel Joyce’s 63 steered Ireland to a comfortable victory•International Cricket Council

South Africa brushed aside West Indies in a top-of-the-table clash involving the two unbeaten teams in the tournament. It was a team effort that clinched the victory and not outstanding individual contributions – opener Shandre Fritz’s 43 was the highest score of the match, and the wickets were shared around, with three of South Africa’s bowlers picking two each.West Indies chose to bat and lost Juliana Nero in the third over. The bigger blow was when in-form opener Stafanie Taylor fell lbw for 20 in the 14th over. West Indies also lost their captain, Merissa Aguilleira, and 19-year-old Deandra Dottin in the next over to slip to 62 for 4. Stacy-Ann King made a patient 38 to push West Indies to something of a respective total before they were bowled out for the first time in the tournament.South Africa were rarely in trouble during the chase, with Fritz and captain Cri-zelda Brits adding 62 for the second wicket. Even though both were dismissed within two overs of each other, twenties from Mignon du Preez and Marizanne Kapp took South Africa to their fourth straight victory.
Scorecard
Shashikala Siriwardene, Sri Lanka’s captain, turned in an all-round performance that lifted them to victory over Pakistan, and help them stay in the hunt for third place. Siriwardene top-scored with an unbeaten 67 after Sri Lanka were put in to bat, and then spun out three batsmen with her offspinners to consign Pakistan to their second defeat of the tournament.A 73-run second-wicket stand between opener Chamari Polgampola and Suwini de Alwis gave Sri Lanka a platform before Siriwardene, coming in at No. 4, took charge in the second half of the innings. Sri Lanka were also helped by the 25 wides that Pakistan sent down and by a quickfire 27 from Dilani Manodara towards the end of the innings.Pakistan’s chase got off to a good start and No. 3 Nain Abdi’s half-century pushed them to a promising 147 for 2 by the 32nd over. Sri Lanka tried nine bowlers in search of wickets, which came in a flurry once the third-wicket partnership was broken. Their final eight wickets went down for 42 runs, and three middle-order run-outs helped Sri Lanka ease to a win.
Scorecard
Ireland crushed Netherlands in the battle between two teams who were yet to post their first wins of the tournament. Half-centuries from the Joyce twins, Isobel and Cecelia, steered Ireland to a victory with more than 21 overs to spare, after the Ireland bowlers had restricted Netherlands to a moderate total.Netherlands chose to bat and much of their total was through three batsmen – Marijn Nijman (43), captain Helmien Rambaldo (30) and Annemarie Tanke (39), with 25 wides from Ireland being the next highest contributor. Netherlands’ innings fell apart against Ireland’s slow bowlers – legspinner Ciara Metcalfe and offspinner Eimear Richardson took three wickets each.Faced with the small target of 173, Ireland lost opener Clare Shillingon for a duck in the first over. Then the Joyce sisters added 150 for the second wicket at quicker than a run a ball to make the match a one-sided affair.
