We'll be judged on performance in decider – Vettori

Daniel Vettori is not satisfied with two draws and has said that the team will be judged on how it performs in the decider in Nagpur

Two draws in India is not a satisfactory result for Daniel Vettori•Associated Press

They said New Zealand will be swept 0-3. They said New Zealand’s batsmen don’t have the patience to bat out in Indian conditions. They said the bowlers can’t push India at home. They were wrong. Contrary to knee-jerk pre-series predictions of a whitewash, New Zealand have not rolled up and surrendered. Daniel Vettori, though, is not satisfied and said that the team will be judged on how it performs in the decider in Nagpur.”This one is the most important for us. I think the way our team will be viewed will be more on this Test rather than the previous two. We can’t be satisfied. The moment you are satisfied in world cricket, it is the start of your downfall. We can never put ourselves in that position because we aren’t good enough yet and we are looking to improve all the time. We are happy with what we have done but we are definitely not satisfied. Our expectations are high even though we are the eighth-ranked team in the world.”Chris Martin’s five-for nearly pushed them towards a win in the first Test and they were never under much pressure to save the second.Vettori put the success down to “excellent preparations” before the series and the post-mortem after the debacle in Bangladesh. “We prepared exceptionally well and we got confidence from that preparation,” he said. “Fortunately, our performances followed. And when your performances follow, the camp’s pretty happy and there is a lot of confidence going around. So, not a lot needs to be said to the players.”There must have been lot to be say, though, after they were comprehensively beaten in the ODI series in Bangladesh. “There was a little bit of hard talk. I think a lot of players know themselves; you don’t need to say too much because people understand expectations on them and people have their own personal expectations. Unfortunately, we weren’t at our best in Bangladesh and Bangladesh played very well. You have to keep improving, you have to keep adapting and you are always playing good teams. So there is nowhere to hide.”We knew India are a huge challenge here and our talks were mainly about coming here to try and win a series. As soon as the talk veers to draws and gutsy losses, then that’s not a good sign for the team. The team picked itself up pretty quickly. We want to continue all the hard work that we have put in so far. It’s important that we don’t get ahead of ourselves and just let the Test match play itself out. But we are certainly excited to be in this position and we hope we will continue the good work that we have done.”Vettori said he was not going to get into a debate about favourites and underdogs ahead of the final Test. “That’s for you guys [media] to decide. Both MS [Dhoni] and I think about the game reasonably similarly and go into the game preparing and playing as best as you can. That’s what we have done in the first Tests and there’s no reason for us to change anything. We just have to come back a little harder. We still expect India to be at their best and we know that they have got some amazing players. You still look at them, their team and what they have done over the last little while and realise just how good they are. We are fairly sure we know what to expect.”

Wolves plot move for Cameron Carter-Vickers

Wolverhampton Wanderers are plotting a summer move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers who is currently on loan at Celtic.

That’s according to 90min.com who claim Wolves are among several clubs who want to sign Carter-Vickers after an impressive season in Scotland with him set to secure a League Cup and Premiership double.

The report also states that Celtic are keen to make his move to Parkhead permanent but the attraction of Premier League football might be too much for him to turn down. He also doesn’t seem to be short of suitors, so would no doubt command a high fee and wages. Any deal could cost Wolves a bargain £10m.

He’s better than Boly

If he did decide he wanted to make the move to the West Midlands then one of the players he would be competing with for a spot in the starting eleven would be Willy Boly.

Boly moved to Molineux for £10m in 2018 from FC Porto after a successful loan spell at Wolves the season before. He hasn’t appeared for the club much this season having suffered several injuries, so with Carter-Vickers proving more reliable this season perhaps it wouldn’t be too hard to displace Boly in the pecking order.

If you compare their average stats over 90 minutes Carter-Vickers performs better in many areas. He wins 68% of all his duels compared to 52% for the Wolves player.

Former Celtic player Chris Sutton has also described him as “immense” in some of his performances this season and Jan Vertonghen once dubbed the centre-back as an “absolute beast.” He has been exactly that in Scotland this term but he is also graceful on the ball.

Indeed, he’s better in possession with a stand out 90% passing accuracy overall compared to Boly’s 82%. If the 22-year old can replicate those numbers in the Premier League then he would be an asset for Wolves.

Age is also a key factor with Boly much older than Carter-Vickers meaning that with the USA international they can plan for the future knowing that he will still be around.

Ultimately if Bruno Lage wants to improve defensively then signing Carter-Vickers would be a good move, even if he doesn’t start he would be a great option off the bench or to come in for an injured player.

No-balling and no calling

Plays of the day from the fourth day of the 5th Test between Australia and England at Sydney

Third time lucky
There is one statistic in this series in which Australia’s bowlers have completely trounced their English counterparts. Unfortunately the statistic in question is their no-ball count. Two further oversteps from Shane Watson took Australia’s tally to 21 for the series, compared to England’s seven – and two of those, Mitchell Johnson at Melbourne and Michael Beer at Sydney, resulted in wickets being overturned on review. Today, Ben Hilfenhaus came within millimetres of a third such reprieve, as Matt Prior thrashed uppishly at a short wide bouncer, to be caught behind for 118. After a wait that was more agonising for the bowler than the batsman, the signal was finally given for umpire Bowden to send Prior on his way. But it was a mighty close call.Watson’s woeful running
As a makeshift opener, Shane Watson has forged an impressive career since his call-up at Edgbaston in the 2009 Ashes. But there’s one aspect of his game that keeps undermining his performances, and those of his team-mates – his running between the wickets. In the first over at Adelaide he stuffed Simon Katich before he’d faced a ball, and at Melbourne last week he sold Phil Hughes a dummy to end his most promising start of the series. Today, he and Hughes reprised their comedy routine, as they jogged a single through midwicket, only for Watson to turn without thinking and hare back for a second. Hughes thought for a split-second about responding, deciding better of it, and planted his bat back in his crease, even while his team-mate continued coming unabashed. It was the seventh time in 49 innings that Watson had been involved in a run-out, but only the second time he’d emerged on the wrong end.Hughes on the way down
Despite surviving Watto, Hughes could not kick on, and his gradual improvement since re-entering the Test team has stopped. After scores of 2, 12, 16, 23 and 31, he fell for 13 in Australia’s second innings, edging a Tim Bresnan ball going away from him to Matt Prior. Katich’s heel injury in Adelaide gave Hughes three games to secure his place in the medium term, but he has failed to show he is an essential choice. Australia’s next Test series is in Sri Lanka in August and the selectors will have to pick between the experience of Katich and the unpredictability of Hughes.Tremlett’s hat-trick assault
Chris Tremlett was memorably denied a hat-trick on his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2005 when the crucial delivery bounced off the top of Mohammad Ashraful’s bails and rolled away to safety. He didn’t quite come as close to that today, but nevertheless, Peter Siddle – who himself claimed three-in-three on the first day of the series – was still required to dig out a pinpoint yorker to prevent his own stumps being rattled. It was an inspired burst from Tremlett, who prised open the tail by bouncing out Brad Haddin, before serving Mitchell Johnson his eighth duck in 11 Tests with an inswinger that took out off stump. In a pumping atmosphere, England claimed the extra half-hour, but couldn’t quite force victory with a day to spare. Not so super Mitch
The Barmy Army have a couple of songs about Johnson and neither are complimentary. In one they say: “He swings left, he swings right, he bowls a lot of shi**”. In the other they are being ironic when belting out . Johnson was Australia’s leading bowler with four wickets for the innings, but he finished it on an expensive low. Graeme Swann was the chief aggressor when Johnson’s final two overs went for a crushing 35, taking his return to 4 for 168 off 36.Delayed Tied Test anniversary
It was a month late but the nine surviving members of Australia’s squad for the 1960-61 Tied Test finally got their anniversary lunch. The match occurred at the Gabba in December 1960, but a 50-year celebration of the event was delayed because Cricket Australia didn’t want it to diminish the start of the Ashes series. Richie Benaud remembered Bob Simpson hitting Wes Hall’s first over of the MCG Test for 18, a perfect example of a man following his captain’s orders to attack the damaging fast bowler. Neil Harvey, Alan Davidson, Bob Simpson and Ian Meckiff were some of the other former Test stars in attendance.

South Zone on top as bowlers dominate

South Zone had the better of the first day of the Duleep Trophy final despite Paras Dogra’s aggressive century

Paras Dogra made a swashbuckling unbeaten hundred to resuscitate North Zone after a horrid start, but two late wickets ensured that South Zone held the upper hand on the first day of the Duleep Trophy final at the YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. On a pitch with some moisture that helped the seamers, South Zone chose to introduce Pragyan Ohja as early as the ninth over, and the strategy paid off immediately with Nitin Saini edging a looping delivery to CM Gautam behind the stumps.Shikar Dhawan followed Saini one over later, slapping an Abhimanyu Mithun short ball that stopped on him straight to midwicket. Ojha limped off the field a little while later, having stopped a Mithun Manhas straight drive with his right ankle, but the seamers continued to make inroads. Manhas was bowled by one that nipped back from Vinay Kumar and when Mandeep Singh hit a fuller delivery down point’s throat, North Zone were deep in the mire at 42 for 4.Dogra had made a patient 8 from 29 balls at this stage, and set about repairing the innings in the company of Yashpal Singh. He was fairly circumspect to begin with, making sure to defend the good balls, but at the same time not missing out on the opportunities for boundaries when the bowlers erred in line or length. He began to open his shoulders with the introduction of S Badrinath, whom he dispatched for two sixes and two fours. The pair had added 99, taking the score to 141, when Yashpal fell to S Aravind for 32.The loss of his partner did nothing to slow Dogra down, however. Having taken 103 balls to reach his fifty, he only needed a further 40 balls to get to his hundred, which he did in style, smashing Ohja over cow corner for six. Such was his confidence at this stage that one ball later he skipped down the track and went inside out over extra-cover for another six. He found an able ally in Uday Kaul, and the pair added 89 runs for the sixth wicket, scoring at 4.13 runs an over and giving the innings a sheen of respectability.South Zone struck twice in the last 11 overs to wrest the initiative back. Kaul fell trying to hit Abhinav Mukund through the leg side, but only succeeded in getting a leading edge to cover. Then Vinay Kumar bowled Amit Mishra one ball after he was dropped at slip by Robin Uthappa to leave South Zone the happier side heading into the second day, despite the continued presence of Dogra.
