Zimbabwe top order collapses against pace

Zimbabwe’s batsmen undid some of the hard work done by their bowlers in Andy Waller’s first match in charge since taking over the coaching job in May

Zimbabwe’s batsmen undid some of the hard work done by their bowlers in Andy Waller’s first match in charge since taking over the coaching job in May. Despite being called a “Select XI”, Zimbabwe fielded a full-strength squad for the three-day first-class match as they prepare for a winter program which includes an incoming ODI tour by India and Tests against Pakistan and Sri Lanka and they made a fairly good impression with the ball. The tourists chose to bat first and were in early trouble as they lost their first three wickets inside 11 overs. Nic Maddinson, Aaron Finch and David Warner were all victims of Kyle Jarvis’, with Warner’s 6 from No. 4 of interest to Australian management at the Ashes, to which he will return after the tour of Southern Africa.Alex Doolan and Moises Henriques put on 55 for the fourth wicket, but the recovery was more well-established with the next pair. Henriques and Glenn Maxwell posted 88 before Henriques was dismissed by Michael Chinouya, the uncapped seamer who is being tipped to debut against India.Maxwell was caught off Elton Chigumbura’s bowling and that opened Australia A up. The last five batsmen folded for 21 runs with Chigumbura profiting at the tail end of the innings. On what would have been a typically dry and slow pitch in the Zimbabwean winter, Australia A’s 226 was relatively respectable, but the hosts would have been the happier camp, until they went in to bat.Their top-order was unable to cope with pace from youngsters Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood and within 18 overs, Zimbabwe’s Select XI had lost most of its experience. Vusi Sibanda and Brendan Taylor were caught behind while Sikanda Raza and Hamilton Masakadza were both out lbw.Malcolm Waller and Timycen Maruma managed a 35-run stand and just as they looked to be taking Zimbabwe to safety overnight, their vigil was broken. In the last over of the day, Maruma was caught and bowled by Pakistani-born and now Australian citizen Fawad Ahmed, who is also making a claim for an Ashes call-up.While some of Australia A players will have one eye on Lord’s, Zimbabwe’s cricketers will look to the second day with recovery foremost in their minds. Batting continues to be their problem and they will need to do serious technical work before their next international assignments.

England seek crushing final blow

ESPNcricinfo previews the fifth Investec Ashes Test at The Oval

Big Picture Not since 1981 have England arrived at The Oval for the last Test of an Ashes summer with the series already won. The possibility that lies tantalisingly before them is even rarer. Never before have Australia been beaten 4-0 by England and only once have they lost by such a wide margin (the 5-1 home defeat in 1978-79, when Packer was a dirty word). After a demoralising six weeks, when Australia have regularly misplaced their key moments, they will have to find extra reserves if they not to be swept away by an English tide.Metaphor aside, Australia have again delved into their squad to supplement an ever-changing cast, with James Faulkner called on to make his Test debut. Only Mathew Wade of the original 16-man party has not been utilised and, with the additions of Ashton Agar and Steven Smith, Australia will have used 17 different players over the course of the series – not to mention a batting order that has changed with every Test. England, by contrast, have been their usual, methodical selves and only an injury to Tim Bresnan will force them to alter the team for the first time since Steven Finn was dropped for the second Test at Lord’s. It is not only the scorelines that have changed in Ashes cricket. It may not be the cauldron of expectation experienced in 2005 and 2009, then, but The Oval has a recent record of producing memorable finales. Despite England’s supremacy, this series has at times brought to mind the joke from about a conversation between two elderly women at a resort in the Catskill mountains: “One of them says, ‘Boy, the food in this place is terrible.’ The other one says, ‘Yeah, I know, and such small portions.'” There has been a shortfall in quality on both sides – only Ian Bell, Graeme Swann and Ryan Harris can claim to have had outstanding series – but the Investec Ashes continues to serve up irresistible moments.Form guideEngland: WDWWW
Australia: LDLLL
Players to watchJonny Bairstow has been attempting to nail down a spot in England’s Test side for over a year now but, despite frequent encouraging episodes, the hammer keeps descending at a crooked angle. His 67 at Lord’s was crucial in helping to right England’s first innings and 203 runs at 29.00 in the series puts him above both Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott but doubts about his technique and temperament persist. England have not had a century from their No. 6 batsman since Eoin Morgan in 2010 but it feels like Bairstow needs a three-figure score to be sure of his place this winter. When you have backers like Shane Warne in your corner, big things are expected and James Faulkner has provided plenty of evidence of his talent since his debut for Tasmania as an 18-year-old. Now 23, Faulkner averages 30.31 with the bat and 22.87 with the ball in first-class cricket and his feisty, competitive spirit has been to the fore in a handful of limited-overs appearances for his country. That aside, Australia may hope the fact Faulkner hails from Launceston, hometown of Ricky Ponting, is enough to make England edgy.Team newsAlastair Cook said that Chris Tremlett has a “good chance” of coming back into the side for a first Test appearance since January 2012. Bresnan’s back injury means a space has opened up in the attack and Tremlett will be up against Chris Woakes – more of a like-for-like replacement for the all-round talents of Bresnan – and Finn. Giving Simon Kerrigan a debut alongside Graeme Swann remains an outside possibility, though England have not played two spinners at home since Cardiff 2009.England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Joe Root, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Chris Tremlett 11 James AndersonAustralia have announced their XI in advance, with Faulkner set to make his debut and Mitchell Starc returning. Usman Khawaja and Jackson Bird drop out and, with allrounder Faulkner coming in at No. 7, Australia will rejig their batting order again. After two innings at No. 6 (and one at No. 4), Shane Watson moves back up the order to first drop, a position that has caused Australia a deal of grief in recent times, while Brad Haddin is now in the top six, above a lengthy, if doughty, tail.Australia 1 Chris Rogers, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Steven Smith, 6 Brad Haddin (wk), 7 James Faulkner, 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Nathan LyonPitch and conditionsThe Oval has been on the slow side and more liable to turn in recent years but, although the pitch for the fifth Test is dry, there is an expectation that it will be quicker and bouncier than usual. The weather is forecast to be warm, although there is the possibility of showers interrupting a couple of day’s play.Stats and triviaEngland have only lost six times to Australia at The Oval, against 16 wins, making it their most successful home ground. The last time Australia went two consecutive series without winning a Test was in 1986.After 98 and 96 Test matches respectively, the batting records of Kevin Pietersen and Alastair Cook are separated by 33 runs and 0.21 in average. Pietersen is marginally ahead of his captain but Cook has two more centuries (25 to 23).James Faulkner will become the 435th player to represent Australia in Tests.Quotes”I think it would be very special to win the Ashes 4-0. That is what our motivation is as a side and we are hopefully going to pick the right side – the side that we think can win this Test match.”
“He is an extra option to help us take 20 wickets but it is the overall package that James Faulkner brings. His toughness and performances of late in whatever format and the fact that he is not just a bowler. He can make some very handy runs for us.”

-Estou fazendo meu trabalho e estou tranquilo.

Mawoyo eyes Test return against Pakistan

Tino Mawoyo, the Zimbabwe opening batsman, has been working toward his return for the Tests against Pakistan after five months out of cricket recovering from groin surgery

Firdose Moonda01-Sep-2013

Tino Mawoyo: ‘I know that I haven’t had many match situations recently but I played in the inter-squad two-day match we had and I hope I will get my place back in the team’•AFP

When Zimbabwe last played a Test, opening batsman Tino Mawoyo could only watch from the sidelines. He was nursing a severe groin injury, awaiting a hospital date and commentating on Zimbabwe’s performances and what Mawoyo saw concerned him.Although Zimbabwe had solid contributions with the bat from Brendan Taylor and Hamilton Masakadza, they lacked a dependable opening pair. The highest first-wicket partnership was 36, scored by Vusi Sibanda and Regis Chakabva in the second innings of the second Test. Those same two players had put on 23 in the first innings. Sibanda and Timysen Maruma were even less successful at the top, managing only 10 and seven in the first Test, which would explain why Maruma was dropped.Mawoyo is careful not consider himself Zimbabwe’s saviour but judging from the performances against Bangladesh, a batsman in his mould is exactly what they were missing. And now, they could have him back. He has successfully healed from the groin surgery he underwent in Johannesburg on May 22 and despite five months out of action, has been hard at work to ensure he is ready to return.”I’ve had a lot of one-on-one sessions with Grant Flower,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I know that I haven’t had many match situations recently but I also played in the inter-squad two-day match we had and I hope I will get my place back in the team, especially because it will be against a side I have done well against.”If Zimbabwe’s think-tank relies on history, they will recall Mawoyo without hesitation. In just his second Test, he scored an accomplished, undefeated 163 against Pakistan and demonstrated temperament which eluded his team-mates. He was also the only Zimbabwean batsmen who handled the spin threat of Saeed Ajmal with absolute assurance.”He is just a wizard; he can turn the ball on glass,” Mawoyo said of Ajmal. “And we know he’ll be coming at us again but he is also not the only bowler we need to concentrate on.”Although Ajmal remains the main threat, Mawoyo has also been preparing for Abdur Rehman, who he thinks could have as much of an impact on the series, although he hopes conditions can negate both of them. “I don’t think the wickets will take as much as turn as, for example, what we played on in the West Indies,” he said. “It will probably move around quite a bit in the morning in Harare and even Bulawayo, we’ve heard won’t be as dry as normal.”Zimbabwe were, in the words of assistant coach Stephen Mangongo, “embarrassed,” by slower bowlers in the West Indies, where their inability to combine footwork with finesse was sorely exposed.Mawoyo, who last played on that tour, believes Zimbabwe have progressed from then. “We had a few issues then and we wanted to go forward. I think we’ve learned a lot. Winning the ODI was a big confidence booster. It was very encouraging to see the guys bat for longer periods.”Patience is the hallmark of Mawoyo’s game so he was heartened to see others in his team willing to employ the same mindset. Coach Andy Waller was in agreement. “The guys know they can go out and score runs against Pakistan,” he said, after the final one-dayer. “There’s a bit of confidence and self-belief.”No-one knows that better than Mawoyo, although he also knows being able to do something once does not guarantee one can do it again, unless the requisite determination and commitment is there. “I think we can do well in the Tests and I think I can do well but it’s not like I am going to be starting on 100 again. When I walk out there, I will be on nought, we all will and we’ve just got to show what we can do.”
