Man City fans question Pep Guardiola’s use of Phil Foden against Crystal Palace

Man City will be pleased to have got back to winning ways with victory over Crystal Palace, but one aspect of the match has disappointed some supporters.

The Eagles twice came close to scoring in the second half through Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha, but aside from that it was clear sailing for the Citizens.

Pep Guardiola’s side dominated in typical fashion with 71% possession and 21 shots, with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus missing chances late on to put the game to bed.

Despite that, Phil Foden had to wait until the 89th minute for his introduction, and that has caused concern for some.

Their bewilderment is understandable, too, given his manager’s comments, with Guardiola stating that he would never consider selling the England U21 international, even for €500m.

Fans are keen to see Foden given more game time, and are frustrated that his lack of minutes could be hindering his development, particularly as they feel he is capable of performing against opposition lower down the league, such as Palace.

Here are some of the reactions to Foden’s late appearance against the Eagles.

Liverpool would solve a major headache by signing Ajax sensation David Neres

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Italian publication Calcio Mercato, Liverpool are interested in making a move for Ajax forward David Neres.

What’s the word?

The Brazilian has been a key performer for the Dutch side since joining the club from Sao Paulo in January 2017. Last season, the 22-year-old scored twelve goals and provided a further 15 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions, with two of those strikes coming against Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League.

The forward was reported to have had an offer to leave the Eredivisie giants during the summer, but a deal failed to materialise. It was then confirmed he had penned a new deal with the club. However, Calcio Mercato now claim Liverpool are eyeing up a swoop for Neres as they look to strengthen their attack.

Potential

At just 22, the Brazil international has a lot of room for growth in the future. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be able to contribute significantly for Liverpool were he to join anytime soon. Ajax’s fairy-tale run to the last four of the Champions League last season gave him incredible exposure to football at the highest level, and that should stand him in good stead at Anfield.

As someone who can operate both on the left and right flanks, Neres would give Klopp real strength in depth in the wide areas. Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have shared a lot of the goal-scoring burden – they were joint-winners of the Premier League’s Golden Boot last season – and so signing the Ajax starlet would ease the pressure on them considerably.

Whilst his start to the current campaign hasn’t really taken off yet with just two goals in total, his under-lying numbers still shows he is continuing to be an influential player for Ajax. In the league, Neres has averaged 1.3 shots, 1 key pass and 1.6 dribbles per game.

If the Reds make a swoop for the 22-year-old, they would be getting a player in the mould of some of their key attackers – direct, pacy and with an eye for goal – and thus someone who could quite comfortably ease the work-load on Salah and Mane.

QPR fans react to Nahki Wells’ transfer comments

Some QPR fans have taken to Twitter to react after Nahki Wells spoke about potentially making his loan spell into a permanent stay at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

“Of course football is a business and there’s a lot more that goes into it than just me saying I’d like to stay here. But if it was possible I wouldn’t hesitate one bit.”

The 17-cap Bermuda international returned to the R’s back in the summer, once again joining on loan from Burnley after spending the entirety of the 2018/19 campaign on loan with the Londoners.

Wells has started the current campaign in fine form with six Championship goals to his name in just six league starts under Mark Warburton – the 29-year-old has made nine league appearances in total this term, and finds himself just two goals off top-scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The former Bradford forward has also netted once in the Carabao Cup – he certainly seems to be enjoying his second stint at the club.

One fan below said that he actually loves the 5 foot 7 forward, while another said that it would be the best signing in a decade if QPR manage to capture Wells on a permanent deal.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction to Well’s comments…

Newcastle United: Many fans left drooling over Fabian Schar assist

Fabian Schar seems to become more impressive by the day to Newcastle United supporters.

On the 31st August, he scored the equaliser against Watford with a clinical left-footed half-volley in the box, as shown in Sky Sports Football’s highlights video on YouTube.

That was then followed up by his goal in Switzerland’s 1-1 draw against the Republic of Ireland, which started off with his pass and intelligent run, ending with a pinpoint shot that went into the bottom corner.

As if that wasn’t enough, on Sunday, he played a superb cross into the box for Admir Mehmedi to score in the 4-0 win against Gibraltar:

With Newcastle only having scored thrice in their first four Premier League games, as per Transfermarkt, they could do with goals coming from all over the pitch, so this is highly encouraging coming from their centre-back.

Some fans are beginning to state that they feel the 27 y/o should be played higher up the pitch, due to his technical ability going forward.

A selection of Twitter reaction to the assist, including posts from impressed Newcastle fans, can be seen below:

Arsenal fans delighted with Emiliano Martinez’s European performance

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal will be happy with their work in their first Europa League game of the campaign.

The Gunners were impressive in attack as they won 3-0, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Joe Willock and Bukayo Saka scoring the goals.

Even more incredible than the convincing away victory was the fact that the Gunners managed to keep a clean sheet. It is only the second time they have been able to do so this term, and it came against a side that reached the semi-finals of the competition last season.

There were several fringe players included in the backline, including Emiliano Martinez.

The Argentinian goalkeeper put in a commanding display, making seven saves to keep the Eagles at bay. Whilst Bernd Leno is expected to retake his place against Aston Villa this weekend, 27-year-old Martinez has at least shown that he is ready to step into the Germany international’s shoes should he need to.

RB Leipzig signing Smith-Rowe could boost Southampton’s Augustin chances

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal attacker Emile Smith-Rowe is reportedly set to join Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on loan until the end of the season, and that deal could boost Southampton’s chances of bringing Jean-Kevin Augustin, whom they are keen on according to a report in The Sun earlier this month, to St Mary’s before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Sky Sports report that the 18-year-old flew out to Germany on Wednesday night and is expected to undergo a medical with the top-flight outfit on Thursday morning, with a move expected to go through.

The exit of Smith-Rowe, who has made six senior appearances for the north London outfit this term according to Transfermarkt, has been sanctioned amid Denis Suarez’s likely arrival at the Emirates, as per Sky Sports, and he will join Gunners teammate Reiss Nelson in the Bundesliga.

Meanwhile, The Sun reported earlier this month that Saints were keen to bring Augustin to the Premier League, although the £38m price tag on his head suggest a deal would not be possible.

Have their chances been boosted late on?

Potentially, as long as Leipzig aren’t demanding a permanent deal now.

The addition of an attack-minded player who can play through the middle or out wide may well impact Augustin’s first-team chances at Leipzig, where he has only played 355 minutes of Bundesliga football this season following the departure of Ralph Hasenhuttl at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, as per Transfermarkt.

The 21-year-old netted 12 goals and provided a further six assists in 37 appearances in all competitions under the Austrian manager last term, once again according to Transfermarkt, and would fit the high-pressing style the 51-year-old wants to implement at St Mary’s.

While his reported value in The Sun is clearly an issue given Southampton’s record signing will be Danny Ings when they pay £20m for him in the summer, as per The Telegraph, it could potentially be possible that similarly to the Liverpool man, they agree a loan deal with a view to a permanent move at the end of the season.

Arsenal fans respond to Vinicius Junior transfer speculation

[ad_pod ]According to UOL Sport, Arsenal contacted Real Madrid over the summer to discuss a potential move for Brazilian attacker Vinicius Junior. However, the report claims that the Gunners were informed that the 19-year-old would not be available despite Eden Hazard’s arrival at the Bernabeu from Chelsea.Vinicius officially joined Madrid from Flamengo in July 2018, and the South American scored seven times and registered 13 assists in his first season with the club.According to UOL, Arsenal’s newly-appointed technical director Edu approached Los Blancos over a swoop for the teenager ahead of the new Premier League campaign. However, it is not too much of a surprise that the Spanish giants turned down the interest after an impressive first year in La Liga.Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

As expected, a number of Arsenal fans have been on social media offering their views on the transfer claim – and a selection of their Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Wolves eyeing Renato Sanches transfer

Since Bruno Lage was appointed as Wolves manager back in June and the Midlands club have brought in players such as Jose Sa, Francisco Trincao, Yerson Mosquera and Hwang Hee-chan as well as January signings Hayao Kawabe and Chiquinho, showing that club are not shy in backing their manager and giving him players to build his squad with.

One player that has been linked with a move to Molineux in recent times is Lille midfielder Renato Sanches, who it seems could still eventually join Wolves at some point soon.

What’s the latest?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Alex Crook had this to say on Wolves’ reported interest in Sanches and the possibility of the club making a future attempt to sign him again.

He said: “He’s definitely someone who’s on their radar. But I think this is where, if they can sell someone like Adama Traore, then it gives them some funds for Bruno Lage to be able to bring in his own players because he hasn’t really done that.”

Lage’s biggest swoop?

Since joining Lille back in 2019 from German club Bayern Munich, the 24-year-old has made 77 appearances for the French side across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing seven assists along the way, showing the attacking and creative skills he has on the pitch.

Looking at the players that Wolves have signed under Lage so far and taking into account Crook’s claim that the Old Gold boss hasn’t been able to bring his own targets to the club yet, a permanent move for Sanches could not only arguably be seen to be a massive coup for Wolves as a whole but as Lage’s biggest transfer deal yet.

After all, the midfielder has tremendous pedigree of playing for a trio of big clubs in three of Europe’s top leagues as well as being a fully-fledged Portugal international with 32 senior caps under his belt.

When you consider his tender age too, there is not only a high degree of potential in his bones but also a significant amount of re-sale value in him, particularly if he thrives in the Premier League.

As a result, this move makes sense for plenty of reasons and should be wrapped up swiftly if Jeff Shi has any sense.

With Crook also mentioning a potential sale of current Wolves winger Adama Traore, if the Midlands club sold the winger either this month or most likely in the next summer transfer window, they should definitely use the money to launch a move for the £27m-rated Sanches if Lille would be willing to shift the midfielder on a permanent basis.

They may not play in the same position but signing somebody as good as the Portugal international in return would be an impressive piece of business.

Tottenham: Spurs make Ollie Tanner move

Tottenham have made a move to sign Lewes FC winger Ollie Tanner, according to The Athletic.

The Lowdown: Tanner profiled

The 19-year-old has been labelled ‘special’ by his manager Tony Russell labelled as. The 6 foot 1 left winger is under contract until the end of the 2022/23 campaign, with his impressive form attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

Brighton have had an offer rejected for the former Arsenal schoolboy, and it seems as if it will be Spurs who secure the teenager’s services.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Spurs’ bid set to be accepted

According to The Athletic, Spurs are looking to pip Brighton to Tanner’s services, having submitted an offer on Saturday.

Russell confirmed it was a ‘really good’ offer, with The Athletic believing that Lewes are set to accept Tottenham’s bid for the teenager.

Tanner has been training with Spurs over the last two weeks and it could now be just a matter of time until he is officially a Tottenham player.

The Verdict: Good news

Tanner is clearly a player in demand, so Spurs winning the race for his services can only be viewed as good news in the long run.

Even though Tottenham are in need of senior reinforcements in the final days of the transfer window, it’s good to see that the club are still working on bolstering their youth ranks.

The likes of Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga are recent examples of players establishing themselves in the first team after coming through the academy, and maybe in the next few years, Tanner could be the next in line for that big breakthrough.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Keinan Davis news

Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis is set to join Nottingham Forest on loan in the New Year.

That’s according to The Express & Star’s Matt Maher, which, as to be expected, has had plenty of Villa fans talking on social media.

Davis saw a temporary move to Stoke City fall through in the summer due to injury and has hardly featured in 2021/22.

The 23-year-old, who Steven Gerrard is thought to be a big fan of, has played just 11 Premier League minutes in what was Dean Smith’s final game in charge.

It now seems as if the forward, who has scored just six times in 86 appearances, will join Steve Cooper’s Forest side for the second half of the season as they look to break into the Championship playoff places.

Villa fans react

Well-known page @villareport shared Maher’s claim regarding Davis on Twitter. This is what these Villa supporters had to say, with many feeling it is the right decision and one even labelling it as ‘fantastic’.
