Tottenham teenager awaiting debut now tipped to be one of the world’s best

Tottenham have been told they have a teenager who will become one of the world's best players in his position, and he hasn't even made his debut yet.

Spurs youngsters who have impressed Postecoglou this season

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is on record stating that the club must keep on improving in terms of academy set up, but there are a few youngsters who have caught the Australian's eye this season.

Indeed, perhaps the most noteworthy of them is forward Jamie Donley, who Postecoglou has handed four senior appearances to this season. The 19-year-old has a glowing reputation already, and based off his academy performances, the sky appears to be the limit.

Meanwhile, young centre-back Alfie Dorrington is another teenager who has earned praise from the Lilywhites boss at various points over 2023/2024.

“With the young guys like Jamie, he’s been doing really well with the U21s consistently. Jamie and Alfie Dorrington have really stood out and that’s why they’ve been training with us," said Postecoglou on Donley and Dorrington earlier this season.

"I’ve been really pleased with Jamie and Alfie though, they’ve been working well.”

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King, speaking to Tottenham News in October, has also said that he's heard "good things" about the pair.

“That experience of training with the first team is very important for the young players. It is a great boost when you get called up to work with the first team, it is like an injection of energy and enthusiasm. You were working with the kids and now all of a sudden you are working with the big boys. It was the same in my day if young players got called in to work with the first team it was a great lift for them.

“If they are not up to the pace or up to the quality then they won’t be back for a little bit. However, these two seem to be impressing the manager and fitting in nicely.

James Maddison with Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League.

“I have heard good things about these two and if they are training with the first team and handling it they must be close to playing for the first team. It is a bonus for the manager to see that he has young players who can step in when other players are injured.”

Alongside Dorrington and Donley, a teenager to watch out for is Lucas Bergvall. The 18-year-old, after his loan at Djurgardens IF, will link up with Spurs in the summer.

Bergvall tipped to become one of the world's best at Spurs

Speaking to Aftonbladet (via Sport Witness), Djurgardens official Peter Kisfaludy has already tipped Bergvall to become one of the world's best midfielders.

“I have had Lucas since November, 2015, when he was nine years old," said Kisfaludy.

"He has always been so extremely talented and I have always had the feeling that he can go as far as he wants and that there is no stopping him. In three, four years, when he is 22-23 years old, he will be one of the world’s best midfielders. He will belong to the top ten in the world among midfielders.”

    THE EXPLANATION

As per Ben Jacobs, Gallagher rejected the extension offer from Chelsea as the Blues have informed him that he will not have a significant role in Enzo Maresca's side as the Italian prefers a more possession-dominated midfield. As such, Gallagher believes that this will affect his chances to make England's squad for the 2026 World Cup in the United States.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Tottenham Hotspur had been the most heavily linked with Gallagher for a move this summer. However, over the last few weeks, Atletico Madrid have become the most likely destination for the midfielder as Diego Simeone is said to be very fond of the player.

Cape Cobras not to be sanctioned for missing transformation target

Cape Cobras will not be sanctioned for missing Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) transformation target in a four-day first-class fixture last month. They will, however, be expected to make up the numbers in a future match.ESPNcricinfo has learned that a meeting between the Cobras and CSA, which took place shortly after it was reported that CSA were yet to launch its inquiry, resulted in the board all but accepting the Cobras’ reasons for their team selection and undertaking to discuss the implementation of targets at domestic level, which could change in the near future. As reported two weeks ago, CSA was due to consider aligning domestic targets with national targets, which are calculated on average over a season, after their coaches’ conference in May. This did not happen but the matter is expected to be on the agenda at CSA’s next meeting along with a proposal to not distinguish between players of colour (including those of Asian or Mixed Race heritage) and black African players.Currently, the national team must field an average of six players of colour of which at least two must be black African, while domestic franchise teams must field six players of colour including at least three black Africans. The national team’s targets are calculated over the course of a season, but the domestic teams have been expected to adhere to targets in every game until the Cobras opted not to.By the system followed at national-team level, if only two black African players are included in the XI in any match and four in another, the target would be considered to have been met.For their first fixture against Warriors, the Cobras fielded only two black African players in their XI, among seven players of colour. The Cobras explained their selection to CSA in writing before the match, saying they prioritised giving those players who had returned from the Test tour of India (such as Zubayr Hamza and George Linde) game time while also retaining in-form players from the previous three rounds. They claim CSA understood and approved their team. When the match began and the team was made public, CSA was questioned about the composition of the Cobras’ line-up. CSA spokesperson Thamie Mthembu told ESPNcricinfo that an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain whether the Cobras had a valid reason for missing the target.CSA is yet to deliver its findings in writing to the Cobras or to make them public but sources have revealed that the franchise will not be penalised. Instead, they will be expected to field four black African players in a fixture later in the season, in what is essentially an application of the system used with the national team.Whether that will prompt a change that applies to throughout the domestic system is yet to be seen. The five other domestic franchises have treated the target as mandatory since they were implemented in 2016 but, having seen the Cobras successfully argue otherwise, they may be tempted to do the same.

FFP update with Nottingham Forest decision set to play crucial role

Nottingham Forest have a charge pending from the Premier League for breaching profit and sustainability rules, with journalist Dean Jones sharing the piece of business which could prove crucial in determining the success of their appeal.

Forest appeal charge to avoid points deduction nightmare

Nuno Espirito Santo's side face the possibility of being deducted points if their appeal comes to no fruition, in similar fashion to Everton, who had ten points struck off in the largest punishment in English top-flight history.

Forest's battle against the drop would therefore take an almighty hit if their case to the judicial panel, and subsequent independent commission hearing, fails to come through.

Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol says Forest's appeal will be resolved in a fairly quick fashion following their confirmed charge midway through January, and specifically by April 12.

"These rules are designed to deal with these cases very, very quickly. They are fast-track, new, streamlined rules," said Solhekol to Sky last month.

"These accounts went in on December 31, two weeks later we're hearing Everton and Nottingham Forest are in breach of the rules. The clubs have two weeks to respond to these charges and pretty quickly two separate independent commissions are going to be set up. And within 12 weeks these independent commissions will have finished their hearings – which last between one and five days – and a week after that we will get the decision.

"By April 12 we will have the decision."

Relegation as a result of any potential charge would be a disaster, but Forest apparently believe their January business has them well prepared for that worst-case scenario. That is according to Jones, who claimed to GiveMeSport that they have very limited potential to spend big in the summer following their off-field sanctions.

Brennan Johnson sale will prove crucial to FFP charge at Forest

The reporter also claims one crucial piece of business by Forest could prove to be decisive in their appeal against PSR charges.

Indeed, Jones claims Brennan Johnson and the timing of his Tottenham transfer will be a deciding factor in Forest's FFP battle.

"We know exactly where Nottingham Forest are at; a current charge pending for a PSR breach that they informed the Premier League about, and they are now waiting for their case to be heard," wrote Jones.

Tottenham's Brennan Johnson.

"Much will centre on the timing of the Brennan Johnson sale within that verdict and any potential points deduction would put them firmly in the relegation battle. Any summer spending would then be dictated by league status but under a worst-case scenario of relegation, expect a fire sale of players to bring the wage bill down."

Johnson signed for Spurs last summer for around £45 million, and his status as a Forest academy player means his sale has gone down as pure profit.

Contact made: Wolves make first move to sign unhappy player for Gary O’Neil

Gary O'Neil and Wolves, who have allowed Fabio Silva and Sasa Kalajdzic to leave on loan this month, have been linked with numerous new strikers during the transfer window. It recently emerged that they had expressed an interest in Chelsea's Armando Broja, who may be available on an initial loan with an obligation to buy for £35m at the end of the season.

It's also been reported that Wolves have made PSG an offer to take Hugo Ekitike for the second half of the campaign, with an option rather than an obligation to make the deal permanent. There's a belief in some quarters, though, that Southampton's Che Adams in the Championship may be the most realistic target given that Wolves have limited funds available for a transfer. Now, as we approach the deadline on 1 February, yet another name has emerged.

Wolves part of Diallo race

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Wolves are interested in Habib Diallo at Al-Shabab. O'Neil's side have been in contact with the Saudi Pro League club over a potential transfer, but there's also interest from former club Strasbourg, as well as Lorient, Lille and Bayer Leverkusen.

Strasbourg centre-forward Habib Diallo.

Diallo is apparently struggling to adapt to life in the Middle East, which is why he's open to making a swift return to European football this month. Al-Shabab intend to drive a hard bargain but are open to loaning him out if they receive an appropriate package. Further developments are expected in the coming days.

Diallo can hit 20-goal heights again

Diallo is currently representing Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, and it remains to be seen whether that proves a complicating factor in any deal. He'll likely be enjoying himself at the tournament, having started all three group games and scored in a 3-1 win over Cameroon. Senegal were the only side to pick up maximum points, and they've set up a round-of-16 clash with hosts Ivory Coast on Monday.

Al Shabab would have regarded the 28-year-old as quite the coup after his prolific season in France. He ranked sixth in the league's scoring charts after reaching the 20-goal mark, and he only needed three spot-kicks to do so. That placed him inside the top ten across Europe's big five leagues for non-penalty goals, even though Ligue 1 team plays fewer games (34) than the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga (38).

Diallo did out-perform his xG by 2.2, but even if that isn't sustainable, he still has the tools to be prolific. And beyond putting the ball in the back of the net, he's a major handful for defenders, having won the second-most aerial duels (135) in the French top-flight and drawn the seventh-most fouls (64). He could be hugely effective in a target role man if O'Neil is willing to use him that way.

While he's only managed to find the net once in the Saudi Pro League so far, Wolves would hope he can rediscover top form in an environment where he's happier and can truly enjoy his football.

'We had a good party after one of cricket's greatest games' – Martin Guptill

New Zealand’s crushing disappointment after the World Cup final against England on Sunday was mitigated by the knowledge that they had played a huge part in one of the most thrilling cricket matches of all time, according to Martin Guptill, the opening batsman whose ill-fortune came to epitomise his side’s cruel luck. Not only was Guptill the man left sprawling for his crease in the Super Over, as Jos Buttler fielded the shy from midwicket that sealed the final in England’s favour, he was also the man whose own throw from the deep – in England’s final over of the original run-chase – inadvertently turned the course of the match on its head. After gathering Ben Stokes’ clip to midwicket with nine runs needed from three balls, Guptill’s return to the keeper deflected off Stokes’ bat and away to the third man boundary for four overthrows, making a total of six runs for the incident. Stokes had already smashed the third ball of the over for another six, and managed to eke out two more singles from the final two balls of Trent Boult’s over to tie the scores.”Up until the third ball we were right in the box seat,” Guptill told Sky Sports ahead of his debut for Worcestershire Rapids in the Vitality Blast. “And then it wasn’t to be, but that’s just the way cricket goes, as players. It was one hell of a final.”Guptill admitted that “the thought crosses your mind” that New Zealand were simply fated to miss out, but he had no doubt about the moment that changed the game.”I guess it was the throw that I threw in from the boundary and hit the back of Stokes’ bat, and trickled off for four,” he said. “You know when that sort of thing happens, from a throw from the boundary, it tends not to go your way.”Chasing 16 runs to win the Super Over, Guptill was left needing two from the final ball of the match, but this time Jason Roy’s shy from midwicket was accurate enough to leave him well short as Buttler confirmed England’s first World Cup in 44 barren years.”I didn’t really know where the ball was, I just put the head down and just started running,” Guptill said. “It was a good throw and I dived from about halfway, and just come up a little bit short.”New Zealand received huge credit for the manner in which they accepted their defeat, in spite of having scored the same number of runs across the match, and Guptill said that the team had been quick to recognise quite what a massive part of sporting history they had played a part in.”Yeah, I think so,” he said. “You know, the support that we had from back home and even around here, and what you see on social media, everyone just loved the game, whether they were cricket watchers or not. Everyone was all over the game and they loved it and it was just a shame for us about the result.”We actually had quite a good party,” he added. “I mean, obviously it was quite a sombre mood for a while but then we realised we were part of one of the greatest games in cricket history, so we got over it fairly quickly. We had a good time together, because we’re not going to be together as a group like that for a while yet.”Guptill’s World Cup had been a luckless affair for much of the campaign. Despite making a half-century to seal a ten-wicket win over Sri Lanka in New Zealand’s opening match, he didn’t pass 35 in his remaining 10 innings. But a change of scene could be just the tonic, as he links up with Worcestershire, the defending T20 Blast champions.”You need a bit of luck in the game as a batsman sometimes,” he said. “And T20 can be the place to find that luck. So who knows, hopefully tonight I can find a little bit and hopefully score a few runs.”It’s a young team and I think there’s a lot of excitement around it,” he added of his Worcestershire team-mates. “The guys just have fun playing together. I think that’s a big part of cricket and something that we pride ourselves on as New Zealanders and the Black Caps. We just go out and have some fun with our mates.”

Jofra Archer on World Cup radar, says Trevor Bayliss, after England suffer another off-day

Head coach suggests Archer could be picked for England’s ODI series against Pakistan in early May

Trevor Bayliss, England’s head coach, has dropped the strongest hint yet that Jofra Archer is in line to make their World Cup squad this summer, after suggesting he could be picked for the ODI series against Pakistan in early May.Speaking to Sky Sports at the end of a chastening day for England’s ODI team in St Lucia, Bayliss indicated that, while Archer is unlikely to feature in the provisional World Cup squad that needs to be named by April 23, there will be time to amend their final 15 before their campaign begins, against South Africa at The Oval, on May 30.Archer, who was born in Barbados but has a British passport, recently benefited from a change to the ECB’s residency qualification period – from seven years to three – which means that he will be available for selection come the start of the English season, having spent the required 210 days on English soil in the past 12 months. And while his experience in 50-over cricket remains limited – just 14 List A games in his career to date – his star quality on the T20 circuit makes him a hugely attractive proposition for an England set-up that has had its vulnerabilities exposed in the course of a run-laden ODI series in the Caribbean. With his combination of genuine pace and subtle variations, allied to outstanding athleticism in the field and a hard-hitting ability with the bat that would slot seamlessly into England’s allrounder-laden lower-middle order, Archer’s stock has risen in the past few weeks, not least while Chris Gayle – with a series tally of 424 runs in 316 balls – has been climbing into the current incumbents in England’s bowling attack.”We’ve got to have the squad in by April 23, but there’s a month after that to change it,” Bayliss said. “There’s the Pakistan series before then, so we’ll have discussions about whether he plays, because the absolute final date [for the squad] is May 22.”While England’s defeat in the final ODI may mean they relinquish their No. 1 ranking ahead of the World Cup – depending on how India fare in their own series against Australia – there is no expectation of wholesale change to the squad. With the batting set in stone, the only realistic changes are in the bowling department. However, Mark Wood’s impressive pace and sustained fitness in the Caribbean has all but confirmed that he will make the cut.”It’s great that he’s free of injury,” said Bayliss. “We are seeing some of the best of him and what’s he’s capable of when he’s free of injury. It’s exciting for Mark and English cricket, but we’ve got to make sure we look after him.”That potentially leaves a choice to be made between Archer and the likes of Liam Plunkett – whose experience remains invaluable but whose fitness is an issue – and Tom Curran, whose chance to press his own case was rather undermined by the speed of England’s defeat in St Lucia.Bayliss admitted that the Pakistan series, which comprises a one-off T20 and five ODIs between May 5 and 20, would be used as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup, but that there could be some room for late decision-making.”We’d like it to be as close as it can be [to the final 15],” he said, “but we could try someone like Jofra in those matches and make a decision one way or another.”Reflecting on the lessons learnt in the Caribbean, Bayliss admitted that the naivety of England’s batting in St Lucia was a concern, but took comfort from the fact that there are very few wickets back home that offer the sort of steepling bounce that derailed his batsmen both here and in the Test series.”It was a poor performance,” he said. “There were some woeful shots, and obviously after that we were never in the game.”We still haven’t adapted,” he added. “We didn’t adapt at all. We found during the Test series that the bouncier wickets were our Achilles’ heel, we don’t often get to play on too many bouncy wickets in England, and it’s certainly not a strength of ours.”With 200 on the board, we’ve have been right in the game. We needed a couple of guys to get their heads down, whether that meant letting balls go for 10-15 overs and building a partnership. We could have got there, but we kept on making the same mistakes.”It’s the good and the bad. And the gulf between our good times and our bad matches was huge. But in a couple of games [in this series] we’ve come out on top and played well under pressure, so a bit more of that is what we need.”
