Celtic submit offer to sign "box-to-box" in-demand midfielder for Rodgers

Hoping to seal their transfer window with late reinforcements, Celtic have reportedly made an opening offer to sign a midfield addition for Brendan Rodgers this summer.

Celtic transfer news

At the start of the summer, it looked as though the Bhoys were willing to settle on their title-winning side in the Scottish Premiership, but they soon got going with their reinforcements, welcoming the likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah on a permanent basis. And the rumours have only continued since their arrivals, as those in Scotland look to end their summer on a high.

Midfield seems to be the focus too. Names such as Alvyn Sanches and Mateusz Bogusz linked to Celtic Park in recent weeks. Bogusz could be a particularly impressive addition, with his ability to play as both an attacking midfielder and centre-forward a trait that could replace Matt O'Riley and Kyogo Furuhashi if both headed for the exit door in the next week.

O'Riley has, of course, been the subject of interest from Brighton and the player is now set to move to the Premier League side in a record Scottish exit worth an initial £25m that could rise to £30m.

According to French journalist Nabil Djellit, Celtic have submitted their first offer to sign Mahamadou Diawara amid his struggle for game time at Ligue 1 giants Lyon. The Scottish champions aren't the only side reportedly interested, however, with Nantes, RC Lens and others all chasing the teenager's signature in the closing days of the window.

Just 19 years old, Diawara is a similar prospect to Sanches, who Celtic have also been linked with. Clearly eyeing young midfielders full of potential, Diawara could yet emerge to become a replacement for O'Riley at the heart of Rodgers' midfield.

"Brilliant" Diawara needs summer move

In need of game time after starting just four games in Ligue 1 for Lyon last season, Diawara could get the opportunity he so desperately needs at Celtic before the end of the month. Potentially following in the footsteps of former Frenchmen to complete moves to the Scottish giants such as the highly successful Moussa Dembele, the midfielder may yet realise his potential in Glasgow.

The 19-year-old has certainly earned plenty of fans from his time in France, including U23 scout Antonio Mango, who dubbed Diawara a "brilliant signing" and a "box-to-box" midfielder when Lyon secured his signature from Paris Saint-Germain just last summer.

Just one summer later and whilst things haven't quite worked out for Diawara, Celtic have seemingly swooped in with an attempt to end the teenager's nightmare. Diawara may well be one to keep an eye on in the final week of the transfer window.

Crystal Palace struck gold on incredible star who’s worth more than Olise

Crystal Palace and Oliver Glasner have started poorly in the Premier League this season, losing twice and drawing once in their opening three fixtures of the campaign.

The Eagles are definitely feeling the consequences of losing one of their jewels in the crown this summer, with Michael Olise joining Bayern Munich for around £50m.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

Olise made 19 appearances for Palace last season, scoring ten goals and providing six assists in his 1,278 minutes played.

Such an output is hard to replace but they will look to Eberechi Eze to try and do so…

How much Crystal Palace spent on Eze

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish recently described Eze as "outstanding" as both a person and a footballer, labelling the player "a gift" to any football club.

Since joining from QPR in 2020 for a fee of around £16m plus £4m add-ons, the attacking midfielder has made 128 appearances in his time at Selhurst Park, scoring 28 goals and providing 17 assists in those games.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

Last term, the 26-year-old made 31 appearances in all competitions in which he scored 11 times and provided six assists. His impressive season earned him an England call-up for Euro 2024, where he actually made three substitute appearances for the Three Lions.

It was perhaps a surprise, therefore, not to see him attract much interest in the summer with his £68m release clause expiring.

That said, it will be on the table again next summer. Perhaps Parish and Co will have to fend off more interested parties next year as they aim to receive a bigger fee than Olise's.

Eze vs Olise comparison

Both players were seen as Palace's star men last season, with plenty predicting the duo would leave this summer. However, only Olise has left, and Eze, despite rumours of interest, has remained at Palace for the time being.

Forget Sarr: Crystal Palace already have a 'remarkable' Olise replacement

ByConnor Holden Aug 11, 2024

Parish even stated his disbelief in the lack of interest, or at least the lack of action on interest in the former Rs star, saying it left him "astounded".

When you look at his numbers, it's easy to see why he held that point of view.

If you compare the metrics between the two players, Olise does come out stronger in most per 90 statistics. This is considering he played nearly half the number of minutes.

Eze only ranked higher than Olise for xG (by 0.01 per 90), and successful take-ons per 90, averaging 3.03 compared to Olise's 2.82. Both players have a similar play style, in the sense that they like to beat their man 1v1, carry the ball and make things happen in the final third.

But with the French winger being younger, and ranking higher in most of these metrics, it isn't a surprise to see him gain such a big move this summer, whilst interest in Eze was rumoured but not acted upon.

That said, it would not be a surprise to see him improve even further this summer, with the aforementioned exit clause in his contract likely to be activated in 12 months time.

Eze is on course for another excellent Premier League campaign, and it would be hard for many teams to ignore, especially as he helps towards the homegrown quota, which many clubs have to think about when building their squads.

In regard to fresh faces in attack, the Hammers have already got one player through the door in the form of Luis Guilherme. The Brazilian winger arrives in East London in a £25.5million move from Palmeiras. Penning a five-year deal at the London Stadium, the 18-year-old could play a big part in Julen Lopetegui's side next season.

Not content with just the one new arrival, West Ham have also been linked with a number of different players who can bolster their attack. According to a report last week, the Hammers are one of the main sides showing interest in Vitoria Guimaraes winger Jota Silva.

Joining Silva on the Hammers' list of targets is Aston Villa's Jhon Duran. West Ham have already had one offer rejected for the Colombian with the player himself now pushing for the deal to get done. With Villa willing to part ways with the striker for £40 million, it appears that the club are now weighing up whether to match this valuation.

Hammers return for Brazilian attacker

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Brazilian press are claiming that West Ham are back in the mix to sign Corinthians’ Yuri Alberto. The outlet states that Lopetegui has made contact with the club, likely to find out about the player's situation ahead of the Hammers making their first "official offer" for the player.

Alberto may be a familiar name to some among the Hammers' faithful with the club previously attempting to bring the Brazilian to East London back in August 2023. The 23-year-old came as close as agreeing personal terms with the Hammers, however a failure to agree upon a price with Corinthians saw the Premier League outfit walk away from negotiations.

Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto

The Hammers may have better luck in agreeing a deal this summer with Corinthians reportedly resigned to the fact that Alberto will be departing the club during the window. It is claimed that Everton have taken a look at the striker whilst an unnamed Saudi Arabian club have offered around £17 million for Alberto.

Alberto's popularity this summer is to be expected with the striker finding the back of the net on seventeen occasions this season. With multiple clubs eyeing up a deal for the 23-year-old, it may be in the Hammers' best interest to use their previous negotiations to get the deal done quickly this summer.

He will next be in action against Esteghlal in the AFC Champions League on Monday.

Imagine him & Cucurella: Chelsea in talks to sign £42m talent

The summer transfer window has been open for over one month and Chelsea have made good use of the time, reinforcing several positions with some exciting additions.

Tosin Adarabioyo was snapped up on a free transfer after his contract expired with Fulham, Leicester City's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has joined for a £30m fee and Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman and Renato Veiga have been brought in to add to the youthful flair at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are far from done, however, with further firepower being targeted to strengthen Enzo Maresca's frontline.

Chelsea in talks to sign exciting talent

As per Caught Offside, Chelsea are one of the contenders to sign Rennes starlet Desire Doue, who has recently been the subject of a failed €35m (£29m) approach from Bayern Munich.

It's believed Chelsea and Tottenham are in talks to seal a deal and now have a real chance to steal ahead and secure Doue's services, with Rennes holding out for a €50m (£42m) figure.

What Desire Doue would bring to Chelsea

Dubbing Doue an "entertainer", analyst Ben Mattinson lauded the attacking midfielder's style, technique and flair and even said he's of the mould of Jamal Musiala, Bayern star and one of the game's superlative technicians.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

Chelsea actually let Musiala, 21, slip from their clutches back in 2019, before he had made a senior appearance, so his meteoric rise will rankle some; signing Doue could prove to be a vindication of sorts.

Rising through Rennes' youth ranks, Doue – who has further been dubbed a "special talent" by analyst Mattinson – has already completed 76 senior appearances, demonstrating an impressive level of fluidity and positional bendability that is reflected through his manager's trust in his skillset across numerous roles.

He might be effective across a range of roles but Doue is principally a left-sided attacking midfielder, and with just cause. As per FBref, he ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive passes, successful take-ons and interceptions, the top 15% for tackles and the top 21% for shot-creating actions per 90.

He's shaping into the complete player, with his 2.1 dribbles and 5.1 duels won per game in Ligue 1 last term (Sofascore) denoting his creativity and combativeness both.

Rennes midfielder Desire Doue

Chelsea's left flank has been a point of concern under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Co, with Mykhaylo Mudryk posting 11 goal contributions from 58 matches since his £89m transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk and Raheem Sterling continuing to play solidly if unspectacularly.

Marc Cucurella has also come under fire for his performances in Chelsea blue, but after his international escapades with Spain at Euro 2024, the left-back might just have set himself on the path toward redemption, with Chelsea content creator Alex Goldberg even branding him an "awful" player.

The 25-year-old really did leave quite the mark on the continental tournament, with his steely defensive performances, mixed with a healthy dose of playmaking, providing perfect balance for the impeccable Spanish equilibrium.

Fluent and fearsome, Luis de la Fuente's side were head and shoulders above the rest, and Chelsea must now be excited by Cucurella's potential resurgence.

The £175k-per-week talent might have been below his best last term but he still ranked among the top 5% of Premier League full-backs for pass completion, the top 6% for tackles and the top 7% for blocks per 90.

With the right adjustments – and indeed Cucurella's strengths align with Maresca's ball-focused system – Chelsea could unleash a brilliant new left-flanking duo next term, with Doue's fleet-footed style effectively bolstered by the sharp distribution from behind.

Doue, in turn, is indeed emerging as one of French football's most complete young stars, especially given that he already ranks so highly for defensive metrics.

He's also not one to drive into the box with the greatest regularity, ranking among only the top 49% for touches in the attacking box per 90. This is fine. Cucurella is not the most frequent of dribblers, averaging 0.2 per top-flight game last term. He didn't complete a single ball carry at the Euros.

Spain's Marc Cucurella

This will create overloads out wide, and if a central striker is adept enough in their movement and ball-striking ability, it could be a devastating weapon for the Blues to utilise – let's not forget, Cucurella is creative nonetheless and Doue still scored four goals and added four more in Ligue 1 last season, starting only 17 matches.

It's frightening to think about how deadly a winger Doue could bloom into down the line, and while he's already proved himself to be a top talent, he must choose his next step wisely as he looks to grow in stature and foster his qualities.

Chelsea transfer target Desire Doue

Chelsea has been a rather turbulent place over the past few years but it does look like there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. Doue would arrive with the promise of a chance to grow into one of the Premier League's finest.

And if Cucurella carries his international form back into the domestic scene, Maresca might just find himself wielding one of the most dynamic and deadly left-sided partnerships in the game.

Henry Nicholls makes the step up in Kane Williamson's absence

“More than a hundred, I needed to bat longer,” he says after overcoming form slump

Henry Nicholls survived tough conditions at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, carrying New Zealand to a position of strength despite being asked to bat first. Nicholls, unbeaten on 117 at stumps on the first day of the second Test against West Indies, said it was crucial for the rest of the batting group to step up given the absence of Kane Williamson, the captain and their best batsman. Williamson is on paternity leave, having led New Zealand to an innings-and-134-run victory in the first Test in Hamilton.Watch the cricket on ESPN+

New Zealand vs West Indies is available in the USA on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the series

Nicholls’ century took New Zealand to 294 for 6, and also meant he shrugged off a slump of sorts, having gone nine Tests and 13 innings without passing fifty. The last time he crossed a half-century was against Bangladesh in March 2019 at the same venue, when he had hit 107.”It’s nice to contribute, [as I] probably haven’t in the last few games as much as I wanted,” Nicholls told the host broadcaster after the first day’s play. “[I’ve been] pretty lucky that the team and the other batters have been playing so well. But without Kane here in this game, it was important for us as a group to stand up. So that’s all I was trying to focus on – just keep it pretty simple [and] bat for long periods. It’s nice to be not out overnight and looking again into tomorrow.”Nicholls rode his luck during the innings with dropped catches and half chances, but also ensured he capitalised when the ball was in his area. Even his century came with a leading edge through point when looking to go through midwicket.”Probably a fitting way to bring it up,” he smiled. “[There was] certainly enough there for the bowlers throughout the day, so you just try and bounce it as a batter and say, ‘Sometimes it’s going to beat the bat and sometimes you’re in luck, or it’s not.’ So it was certainly nice to get there and nice to be not out overnight.”It’s a funny thing with the hundred, it’s such a milestone. But for me, it was just trying to keep it really simple and realise that more than a hundred, I needed to bat longer. So it’s just [about] trying to put that into context. Nice to get through that [and] have a little luck. That’s cricket sometimes.”Nicholls’ method also involved leaving a lot of balls outside off, with the pace and bounce in the surface – “more than usual” as per the left-hander – meaning he could leave on a length comfortably enough. It was also a pitch where he thought his own side would enjoy bowling on.”I was trying to leave well, make them bowl straighter,” Nicholls said. “It’s pleasing when you’re able to do that. Certainly, at times you’re tested on this sort of surface. I think the pace in the wicket amplifies that. When you get a few loose ones, you’re able to score. Sometimes you’re just trying to keep your tempo going as a batter.”The biggest thing for me was to just to try to keep to what I was doing. Not if you hit a few boundaries you feel like you could hit more. Because you just knew that if they bowled in a good area for long enough, there was a chance that they’re going to take the edge, which they did throughout the day. So yeah, it’s a surface we’re still looking forward to bowling on, but hopefully not too early tomorrow.”

Man Utd make move for £16k-p/w striker, they’ve already had a response

Manchester United are stepping up their chase for a new striker this summer, and have already had an answer back as they look to land one of their targets.

Hojlund needs support

Signed by Erik ten Hag last summer, Rasmus Hojlund enjoyed a mixed first season at Old Trafford. The Dane enjoyed a purple patch in the middle of the campaign, but suffered poor runs either side, with nine of his 12 Premier League goal contributions coming in a seven week stint between December and February.

Still just 21-years-old, he was often asked to plough a lonely furrow but showed plenty of promise. However, he is now the only recognised striker on the Manchester United books after Anthony Martial confirmed his departure as a free agent this summer.

It has left the Red Devils in need of a new striker, and they were dealt a blow on that front when target Benjamin Sesko signed a new deal to keep him at RB Lezipig this summer, scuppering any hopes of luring him to Old Trafford.

As a result, they have been forced to look elsewhere, and with new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe keen to avoid past mistakes, they are on the hunt for a younger player who can share the role with Hojlund and who will offer fewer fitness issues than Martial, all while demanding a reasonable salary.

United handed answer over 21 year-old

That comes as Sports Bild have revealed (via Sport Witness) that United are one of the sides keen on 21-year-old attacker Maximilian Beier, who is also thought to be attracting attention from Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool.

The Hoffenheim youngster enjoyed a breakout campaign, scoring 16 times in 33 outings across the German top flight last season, and was rewarded with a call up to the German national side, making his debut in the most recent round of June internationals and doing enough to earn a spot in the squad for the upcoming EURO 2024 in his home country.

Hoffenheim’s sporting director, Alexander Rosen, has heavily praised the youngster, claiming that: “Maxi Beier is a super guy and an extremely talented striker. He is incredibly fast, dangerous and can kick really well.”

And United have made the 'first move' for his signature this summer, it has been claimed, with the Red Devils asking Hoffenheim what terms would be required to sign the rising star.

And they already have a response too, with Hoffenheim reportedly pointing to his 32.5m euro (£27.4m) release clause as a guide price to snatch him away this summer. He will be cheaper next summer, with said clause believed to drop by 2.5m euros every summer across the three remaining years of his £16k per week deal with the German outfit.

As with summer tournaments, a strong performance at EURO 2024 could see a rush of clubs join the queue for his signature, which may leave United wanting to get a deal done sooner rather than later if they are serious about their interest.

Howe must finally axe Newcastle dud who earns more than Trafford

Newcastle United's unthinkable season last campaign was helped massively by the financial backing from the Saudi PIF, with figures such as Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier playing a key role in the club's success.

The Magpies finished in the Premier League's top four, securing a place in the Champions League for this campaign before being knocked out in the group stage.

However, things haven't gone as planned this campaign, with Eddie Howe's side finishing seventh after suffering somewhat of an injury crisis throughout the season.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

The injury crisis has provided some fringe first-team players the opportunity to stake their claim for a return to Howe’s plans even after the regular players return from their respective injury lay-offs.

One player, in particular, has failed to take advantage of the issues at St James’ Park, with the club needing to permanently offload the first-team asset following recent interest to help in their battle to avoid any punishment for breaking PSR rules.

Newcastle must offload first-team player this summer

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle have told goalkeeper Martin Dubravka he’s free to leave Tyneside this summer, which has prompted interest from Scottish side Celtic ahead of the summer.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are on the hunt for a new shot-stopper during the off-season amid Joe Hart’s retirement following the club’s league and cup triumph during the 2023/24 campaign.

The 35-year-old stood in for nearly four months between the sticks following Nick Pope’s shoulder issue, with Dubravka making a catalogue of errors and looking past the level required of a goalkeeper in the Premier League – as indicated below…

He only has one year left on his current deal at St James’, with Howe and the club’s hierarchy needing to offload the Slovakian given his poor performances and high weekly incomings.

How much Dubravka earns at Newcastle

With his age, it’s no surprise to see the ‘keeper look a shadow of his former self and when looking at his weekly wage at the club, it provides another reason why Howe must offload the experienced man this summer.

According to Capology, he earns a reported £40k-per-week, which is nearly double the amount earned by current transfer target James Trafford, who only earns £25k-per-week at Championship side Burnley.

Over the course of the current season, he’s pocketed a total just shy of £2.1m, with Dubravka earning over £10m in wages since his move to Tyneside nearly six years ago.

When comparing the duo on FBref, who are at different ends of their professional career, it’s evident that the England U21 European Championship winner is an upgrade on the current Magpies goalkeeper and a player that can allow the club to finally improve the goalkeeping department.

Although Trafford – who Newcastle are in talks to sign – suffered relegation back to the second tier with the Clarets, he’s demonstrated his qualities with his feet – a quality that would undoubtedly take Howe’s defensive unit to the next level.

While Dubravka has been a good servant to the club, making 153 appearances, unfortunately, the time has come for the club to move him on and look to invest in a Trafford who can either learn from Pope or even replace him as the club’s number one for the 2024/25 season.
