James Pearce drops Liverpool team update

Liverpool will return to action in the Premier League after almost a month on Saturday afternoon, hosting Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield and now an early team update has emerged from a reliable source.

What’s the latest?

The Athletic’s Liverpool reporter James Pearce has outlined the current state of play in the club’s ongoing injury problems ahead of the game tomorrow.

Pearce wrote in an article for the publication that Ibrahima Konate, Calvin Ramsey and Jordan Henderson will all finally be available for selection after recovering from injury, however, Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones and Naby Keita continue their recovery and are unlikely to make an appearance against Brighton.

Klopp will be relieved

There is no doubt that Jurgen Klopp will be relieved to have some of his players back and ready for selection after the prolonged break as his team faces nine fixtures over the month of October.

The Reds will take on Brighton, Arsenal, Manchester City, West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, Ajax and Rangers twice before November in a very congested month of football, and the Liverpool manager will be desperately hoping they can come out of the other side of it with results, momentum and good form.

The Merseysiders are currently suffering their worst start to a Premier League season under Klopp since he joined the club back in 2015, and are currently 8th in the league table, nine points off the top spot but there are many opportunities over the next few weeks to rectify that especially playing both Arsenal and Man City.

Having Konate back in the matchday squad will give the defensive line a huge boost over the upcoming fixtures as the young centre-back proved last season he was a standout performer, especially in the Champions League campaign that led to another final for Liverpool.

The 23-year-old Frenchman scored twice, made 1.6 interceptions, two tackles and 2.9 clearances per game, as well as winning 59% of his duels combined and successfully completing the majority of his dribbles (67%), earning Klopp’s trust to start in the final against Real Madrid where he was one of the highest rated players (7.5) in the defeat.

With that being said, Klopp will be hoping the extended break will have given his team enough time to build their confidence and come back fighting over the months and weeks ahead before the club breaks again for the World Cup, as Liverpool cannot afford to drop more points if they want to be in with a chance of competing for the title.

Arsenal set to extend Martinelli’s contract

A journalist has dropped an in-house Arsenal update and it is good news for Mikel Arteta as he looks to plan for the future.

What’s the news?

Mark Mann-Bryans, who covers Arsenal for PA Sport, has claimed that the Gunners have recently opened talks with winger Gabriel Martinelli, tweeting: “Understand that contract talks with Gabriel Martinelli have recently opened. Expected to be on much improved terms.

“Would be seen as a reward for fine form given he still has plenty of time to run on current deal and club already has an option to extend by a year.”

Arteta will be hoping to get him tied down to a long-term deal as soon as possible in order to fend off any potential suitors for the Brazilian.

Its great news for Arsenal

The 40-year-old appears to be turning the tide at Arsenal, and after a strong summer of transfer activity, including the signings of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, they should challenge for a top-four Premier League place.

Improving existing players’ contracts is also important for the Spaniard’s long-term vision of the club, and with reported plans to tie down William Saliba to a long-term deal, it’s Martinelli’s turn next.

The £90k-p/w winger moved to the Emirates Stadium in 2019 for what now looks like a bargain £6m fee. The 21-year-old has started this season brilliantly, playing two Premier League matches and scoring twice, with an average WhoScored rating of 7.84 as he looks set to kick onto the next level.

Martinelli has proven to be a constant threat going forward, ranking in the top 10% compared to positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues when it comes to touches in the attacking penalty area (6.53 per match), while he can also offer defensive qualities.

The Brazilian ranks in the top 8% for blocks (1.83 per match) and top 16% for aerial duels won (1.28) showing his increased maturity as he can now contribute to both Arsenal’s attack and defence.

With two years left on his current contract, it appears that the extension is to give him better terms and hopefully ward off any advances from other clubs, especially with his impressive form so far this season. Described by Football Daily’s Connor Humm as a player who’s “exploding” into life, the 21-year-old seems to have a hugely exciting future ahead.

Arteta is building an excellent team and the Arsenal faithful have plenty of reasons for optimism, particularly after the fine start to the season that they are enjoying, and the prospect of a new contract for Martinelli offers further good news for Gooners.

Rangers hit with Rabbi Matondo blow

Glasgow Rangers officially kick off their 2022/23 campaign in the Premiership today and they have already been hit with a big injury setback…

What’s the talk?

Light Blues boss Gio van Bronckhorst has confirmed that Rabbi Matondo will not be in the squad to face Livingston this afternoon.

The Welsh international has been ruled out of contention to play, alongside Kemar Roofe, and will now have to wait to make his bow for the club.

On Friday, Rangers quoted the Dutchman as saying: “Roofe is not in the squad for tomorrow, Lowry is back training to pick up fitness. Matondo will miss out tomorrow. Kemar is back on the pitch now so hopefully back involved in the coming weeks.”

Huge blow

The Gers snapped him up from Bundesliga club Schalke 04 for a reported fee of £2m earlier this month and the head coach will be fuming that he will not be able to hand him a full debut on Saturday.

Light Blues chief Ross Wilson said this upon Matondo’s arrival at Ibrox: “We wanted to invest in a wide player this summer and we are excited with what Rabbi will bring to our group, with his speed and his general style of play.

“At 21 years old there’s lots more to come from Rabbi and he will be a strong investment and addition to our group.”

Former Wales manager Ryan Giggs once dubbed Matondo “electrifying” and he has already shown fans what he is capable of with his pace in pre-season matches this month.

The gem produced one goal and one assist, whilst also playing a huge role in Antonio Colak’s goal against Tottenham, in a 3-1 win over Premier League side West Ham.

He used his pace to burst down the right wing to set up Tom Lawrence against the Hammers and to create the goal against Spurs, showing that he is a direct player who knows how to use his speed to put opportunities on a plate for his team-mates.

This could have been pivotal against Livingston as Rangers look to break them down. Matondo can take his man on the outside and put in a cross for Colak – or any of the supporting attackers – to finish off the chance, while he also carries a goal threat himself.

The Wales international scored nine goals in 23 starts in the Belgian Pro League on loan at Cercle Brugge last season. This shows that he has the quality to score and set up goals, which is why his absence for this match is a huge blow for Van Bronckhorst.

Hopefully other players will be able to step up to the mark and make sure that Matondo’s injury does not cost them any points on the opening day.

Newcastle still keen on Jack Harrison

Newcastle United ‘retain a strong interest’ in signing Leeds United winger Jack Harrison this summer, although the Whites are ‘not willing’ to sell the player, reliable journalist Luke Edwards has claimed.

The Lowdown: Harrison linked with Newcastle

While the Yorkshire club have made some important signings this summer, including Brenden Aaronson and Luis Sinisterra, they have also lost two key players in Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.

Another influential figure who has been linked with a move away from Elland Road is Harrison, with various reports claiming that he could move to Newcastle.

It is a rumour which is refusing to go away, and it seems far from certain that the 25-year-old will stay in Jesse Marsch’s squad for the long haul.

The Latest: Journalist provides Harrison transfer latest

Taking to Twitter, Edwards, who was the first to break the Harrison interest back in May, claimed that the Magpies are still eyeing up Harrison, but the word from Leeds is an emphatic no.

The Daily Telegraph reporter tweeted:

“#nufc retain a strong interest in Jack Harrison. Leeds United are not willing sellers at this stage. Given I first reported this interest in May the fact it hasn’t ended yet is, in itself, interesting. Nothing imminent on incomings. Market still difficult but work ongoing etc.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-47/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Hold firm, Leeds

Harrison may not necessarily go into the new season as one of the first names on Marsch’s team sheet but he is undoubtedly an important player, having registered 50 goal contributions in 166 appearances for Leeds.

His quality and work ethic out wide can continue to be valuable assets for the Whites, while losing another established figure would be a big blow in terms of squad stability at Elland Road.

Also, with Raphinha’s exit, the former Manchester City winger is now the most prolific player from 2021/22 to remain at Leeds, having netted eight league goals last term, including the last-gasp winner in the final day showdown against Brentford.

It seems clear that only a huge bid for Harrison could persuade Leeds to do business, which says all you need to know about how highly he is regarded by Marsch and the Whites’ powerbrokers.

Everton must land Conor Gallagher transfer

Everton were rather busy during the previous January transfer window as they brought in five new players on loan and permanent deals.

Three of those winter recruits came from three of Everton’s fellow Premier League clubs.

In addition to signing Dele Alli on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur, the Toffees also brought in Anwar El Ghazi from Aston Villa and Donny van de Beek on loans.

Now that their 2021/22 Premier League season has ended and Frank Lampard will be set to guide the Toffees through another top-flight campaign, the current summer transfer window will give them the opportunity to put themselves in the best shape possible and make sure they don’t end up in another relegation battle.

In terms of potential incoming transfers, one figure the Merseyside club have been linked with that would not only see them continue their theme of signing players from fellow Premier League clubs, but also give Lampard the chance to form what could be a deadly duo in his side, is Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

During his loan spell away from the west London club last season with Crystal Palace, the midfielder ended up scoring eight goals and providing three assists in 34 Premier League appearances.

In fact, his second goal against West Ham United back in August was described by Dan Cook on Twitter as “outrageous.”

To further highlight how impressive he was for the Eagles, only Tyrick Mitchell (187) racked up a higher combined total of tackles and interceptions in the league than Gallagher (112).

From an attacking point of view, as well as his goals and assists, only Wilfried Zaha (104) made more shot-creating actions than the midfield maestro (89).

This is where he’d be able to create a scary partnership with Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin should he join the Toffees this summer.

Taking into account how the striker has found the net 58 times in 190 appearances for Everton and ended his previous Premier League campaign with the joint-highest rate of shots on target per 90 minutes (0.77) at the club, having a creative midfielder like Gallagher behind him could make it easier for him to get into goalscoring situations.

With Chelsea reportedly looking to get £50m for their young midfielder this summer, using the money that the Toffees recently picked up from selling Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur to sign the 22-year-old could be a great next step for Lampard’s side.

Liverpool must seal Jarrod Bowen transfer

Liverpool have not been reluctant when it comes to signing players from fellow Premier League clubs.

Names such as Diogo Jota, Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain among many others have all made moves to Anfield from other clubs in the top division.

In the midst of another summer transfer window, it seems as though the Reds have had their eye on signing yet another figure from one of their top-flight colleagues.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Merseyside club had made a £60m bid for Leeds United winger Raphinha, which was rejected by his agent Deco.

Should the Reds look to move on from potentially signing the Brazilian this summer, another Premier League attacker that could serve as a suitable alternative for the Reds and FSG to target is Jarrod Bowen.

Having been linked with a move for the West Ham United winger previously, Jurgen Klopp has also aired his admiration for the Englishman in the past.

Darwin’s a Red! Get your special edition Darwin Nunez tee here.

Since joining the east London club back in the 2020 January transfer window from Hull City, the 25-year-old has scored 27 goals and delivered 21 assists in 102 appearances across all competitions.

With 12 goals and ten assists to his name throughout his 36 league appearances for the Hammers last season, no other player in David Moyes’ squad racked up more shots on target (33) or goal-creating actions (21) than the winger.

This highlights the clear attacking talent Bowen has and why he could be a good fit at Liverpool considering how they racked up more goal-creating actions (156) as a team than any other side in the league last season.

He also ended the recent campaign with an overall performance rating of 7.15/10, making him the highest-rated player at the east London club according to WhoScored.

Labelled as a “bundle of energy” by Gary Neville, Bowen could also be a great addition to Klopp’s side given the high-tempo style of play they are famed for.

Even though he has a reported price tag of £75m, which is more than the reported fee that the Reds put in for Raphinha, the Hammers star could well be worth making a big investment on given how he’s already proven to be a deadly attacking figure in the Premier League.

Spurs: Christian Eriksen set for decision

A big transfer tease has emerged over Christian Eriksen’s future amid speculation that Tottenham are interested in signing him…

What’s the talk?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the player is set to make a final call on where he will be playing his football next season.

He Tweeted: “Brentford have submitted a serious, important personal terms offer to Christian Eriksen – but the player is considering his options with many clubs interested. Eriksen will make his decision on the future club in the coming days.”

It has previously been reported that the midfielder wants to play Champions League football in 2022/23, with Antonio Conte keen on reuniting with him.

Supporters will be excited

Spurs supporters will be excited by this claim from Romano as it suggests that a decision is now imminent from the player.

Brentford making a ‘serious’ offer will not concern Tottenham at this moment in time if the reports of him wanting European football are to be believed. The Bees do not have Champions League, or even Europa League, football to offer him and this is where Spurs may have a huge edge on their opponents.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Although, Thomas Frank’s side are the ones that offered Eriksen a chance to return to the Premier League after his cardiac arrest last year and his gratitude for that may make him consider re-joining them.

Tottenham, however, also have a strong connection with him as he played 304 times for the club earlier in his career before joining Conte at Inter. This means that he has a pre-existing relationship with both the team and the manager, which is a boost for the north London side.

These factors all point towards a return to Spurs being on the cards for Eriksen and that is why supporters will now be excited by the prospect of the Dane making a decision in the next few days.

The 30-year-old has proven that he still has what it takes to be a significant player in the Premier League as he showcased his quality with Brentford this year.

In 11 top-flight outings, he averaged an exceptional SofaScore rating of 7.53 as he chipped in with one goal and four assists. He created an eye-catching 2.8 chances per game and Spurs fans will be buzzing with the thought of him being back at the club and delivering teasing crosses for Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

Liverpool can find new Gerrard in Bellingham

Liverpool have been linked with Jude Bellingham for a while now and with the transfer window coming up the links have begun to reignite as the Reds set out to improve their midfield this summer.

Aurelien Tchouameni has been heavily linked with the side over the last month, with terms reportedly agreed with the Frenchman who has also attracted interest from Real Madrid too, so it is clear that the Merseyside club are putting themselves out there to sign fresh perspectives in the centre of the pitch.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

The transfer speculation has reignited after Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle told supporters in a Q&A that Bellingham is “a player that they really like”.

The 18-year-old who was hailed “scary” by England teammate Jack Grealish, has been catching the attention of the football world and the youngster has even been compared to former Liverpool captain and Premier League hall of famer Steven Gerrard.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jamie O’Hara claimed:

“He is the closest thing we have had since Steven Gerrard. I say that given the fact Steven Gerrard was unbelievable, but Bellingham is obviously not at that level yet.”

It is no wonder that the young midfielder is being compared to the former Reds midfielder when you consider his attributes on the pitch with both incredible defensive and offensive qualities that constantly trouble his opponents.

According to SofaScore, Bellingham has scored three goals and contributed eight assists, creating ten big chances, making 1.3 key passes, 1.3 interceptions and 1.6 tackles on average per game, as well as winning the majority of his ground and aerial duels combined (51%) and successfully in the majority of his dribbles (57%) in the Bundesliga this season.

These statistics prove he commands the ball and is fearless in making his presence known on the pitch just like Gerrard was for Liverpool, and he would clearly be a huge coup for Klopp if he could convince the £101m youngster to leave Germany this summer.

With that being said, after selling Erling Haaland to Manchester City this summer already it would be highly unlikely that Dortmund would be willing to let go of another one of their most talented stars at the club right now, so unless Liverpool can come up with an offer the Bundesliga side can’t refuse it will be surprising to see the signing made this summer.

Ten Hag could axe Man Utd duo

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard could be granted one last chance to rescue their Manchester United careers with the appointment of Erik ten Hag.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from The Sun who claim that Rashford has received assurances that he will get his chance to perform under Ten Hag next season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

Whilst Lingard could also stay if Ten Hag is able to convince him that he has a future at Manchester United.

Saved or Axed?

24-year-old Rashford has endured the worst season of his career this year, with the out-of-favour England international having just four goals and two assists to show for his 25 appearances for United this season.

It goes without saying that Lingard has also suffered this season, but more so for game-time rather than form, with the 29-year-old accumulating just 355 minutes this campaign from 16 cameo appearances that have seen him grab two goals.

Lingard, who has been dubbed “awful” by Journalist Rob Blanchette, is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with his deal expiring this summer.

Rashford’s situation on the other hand is slightly more intricate, with the winger still holding value amidst his contract expiry in 2023, of which the club have an option to extend by a year.

The 24-year-old – who was labelled “absolutely terrible” by Chris Waddle for his performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League – does have something going for him though. And that is the fact that this is his first blip at Man United with the club massively underachieving as a collective this season.

Though, quite simply, the pair have not been good enough this season and with Ten Hag looking to rebuild the Red Devils, the saving in wages on Lingard and the sale of £45m-rated Rashford could help United to build on their transfer war chest.

Ten Hag’s stance on the £275k-per-week pair will make or break their future at Old Trafford, though with on-going links to the likes of Sebastien Haller, Nicolo Zaniolo, and Antony, it does not bode well for the duo and it should well see them axed.

Bangladesh's eight missing keys to a stable batting order

Bangladesh’s senior batsmen scored most of the runs on the recent tour of the West Indies and the USA. The younger lot failed in comparison and it proved to be a major problem

Mohammad Isam06-Aug-2018Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah contributed a staggering 71% of all runs Bangladesh scored on their tour to West Indies and the USA. Tamim scored the only two centuries and the four senior batsmen scored eight out of the 10 half-centuries. But in stark contrast, eight of Bangladesh’s best young batsmen could muster only 369 runs in 29 innings combined.Liton Das, Anamul Haque, Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman, Mosaddek Hossain, Mominul Haque, Ariful Haque and Nurul Hasan scored only two fifties between them. It proved to be a major problem on tour, with much of Bangladesh’s fortunes depending on that of these four batsmen.Bangladesh’s three top coaches – Mohammad Salahuddin, Khaled Mashud and Nazmul Abedeen – who worked with these batsmen closely, observed generally worrying patterns in their performances. They found a combination of technical and mental deficiencies, inadequate planning and scoring appetite and lifestyle choices as the cause of their overall regress. The trio acknowledged that talent and potential alone cannot take these athletes too far, especially at the elite level.Liton had the most opportunities during the tour, batting in the top order, and was the highest-scorer with 158 runs among the eight young batsmen. Apart from his quickfire 61 in the last T20I, he made three decent starts. When Bangladesh were sinking in the first innings of the first Test, his response was to heave on the off side, only to be caught at point. He also got out twice in the Test series playing too far away from his body.Abedeen, the BCB coach currently in charge of BCB’s Women’s Wing, was the national game development manager and head cricket coach in BKSP, the country’s biggest sports institute where Shakib, Mushfiqur, Soumya and Mominul studied and learned cricket. In his opinion, Liton is equipped with the skills and technique but has to cultivate a hunger to prosper at the highest level.”Liton showed that he belongs at that level but he got out to his own mistakes,” Abedeen explained. “He wasn’t uncomfortable like some of the others. Liton has to think big from deep within himself. I don’t know [what] his full thought process [is like] but when you don’t think big, you can’t plan accordingly, for yourself or for the team.”Liton wasn’t considered for the ODIs despite a 70 in the practice one-dayer in Kingston prior to the series. Mashrafe Mortaza kept faith in Anamul Haque, who disappointed with only 33 runs in three ODIs. The captain perhaps wanted to give him an extended run as Anamul had played four of the five ODIs in the January tri-series at home.Mosaddek Hossain celebrates with his team-mates•Associated PressBangladesh Premier League-winning coach Salahuddin, under whom Anamul played domestic cricket, said he has yet to develop a proper plan of action going into an innings. He was perplexed to see Anamul go all out on the West Indies attack in the second ODI, and then retire to the other extreme in the third game. Not picking enough singles, Salahuddin felt, is another cause of concern in Anamul’s batting.”I saw him bat in all three innings, and he had three different plans. There was no one style or pattern to it,” Salahuddin said. “He was hitting everything in one game, and defending everything in the next innings. Someone like Liton stuck to his style: he got after the bowling regularly whether he got out or not.”The gear change between all-out attack and playing defensively only happens when a batsman doesn’t pick singles, whether voluntarily or because of his inability to do so. Even if the team management demands a certain approach, one cannot just go after every ball. Anamul should have stuck to a proper batting plan.”Like Anamul, Soumya was also given another go in the T20Is as he had been a consistent selection in the format since February this year despite losing his Test and ODI places. According to chief selector Minhajul Abedin, the team management had been asked twice to include Soumya in successive T20I series, against Afghanistan (in June) and, most recently, against West Indies.Much of the investment of faith in Soumya has come at the expense of the Bangladesh team management fiddling with the top order in all three T20Is. In the first game, he fell for a golden duck, while in Lauderhill, he struggled against the pace and bounce. His inadequacies sounded an alarm since tackling such bowling is the prime reason behind Shakib & co backing him. But he finished on just 19 runs in the three matches, stretching his lean patch to 11 innings in which his batting average has been 7.91. More worryingly, Soumya failed to score a half-century against Sri Lanka A in the six opportunities he got earlier at home.Salahuddin believes Soumya has technical deficiencies that should have been eradicated at least two years ago. “Soumya has some technical problems which he should have worked on a long time ago. Offspin is a worry for him, and so is hitting straight,” he says. “He hits everything between mid-on and midwicket. He is a good strokeplayer but the same scenario has been played out for long.”When he gets to a fifty, we say that Soumya is back in form but, in my thinking, he is only back in form when he plays to his strength. He has become quite defensive, and his aggressive approach is gone. I think his psychological change has roots in his technical problems.”Sabbir Rahman plays down the ground•AP Photo/Eranga JayawardenaSabbir, too, has found himself short of runs recently but his worries are not limited to the field of play alone. He made only 27 runs in three ODIs although, in his defense, his batting opportunities all came in the last five overs. However, in most instances, he took guard after a big partnership had ended, which underlines his failure to build on the platform he had been provided with. Having been re-designated to be a lower middle-order hitter, Sabbir knew his role clearly too. But, with a wavering focus, highlighted by his alleged social-media fracas with fans, there’s little he could do to arrest the slide in his on-field performance.Mashud, the former Bangladesh captain who oversaw Sabbir’s development as a cricketer since his early years, pointed to a carpet dearth of desire among Bangladesh’s young players to sustain themselves at the highest level. Mashud has observed many of these young batsmen as a coach in domestic cricket over the years.”Apart from Shakib, the other senior cricketers didn’t start all that well in international cricket but Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Tamim have really come of age in the last four-five years. So what worked for them? They are unbelievably focused on performance,” Mashud says.”Working as a coach in a first-class team, I came across one of these batsmen who turned up just a day before a four-day game. They were putting foundation cement to their new house. Rather than being an icon to the younger players by being professional before a game, they were making excuses.”They need to be separately monitored and motivated. Someone like Fahim (Abedeen) should do one-on-one sessions with them, to get them invested in the game. Look at how Tamim, Mushfiqur and Mashrafe are hooked to the game. You cannot drag these guys out of the nets or gym. But I am afraid it is not the case for the younger cricketers.”He was also critical of the players’ social-media addiction. “Why should they follow Facebook every moment? It should be the other way around. I see one player posting so much and chasing likes. Let Facebook ‘like’ you because of your performance.”Abedeen believes that some of these younger players have to be handed leadership roles in the Bangladesh A side. “I think we are putting some of these young cricketers in the shadow for too long. They need to be given leadership roles at some level. Mosaddek was terrific in the domestic one-day competition, so he should be the ‘CEO’ of the Bangladesh A team, when he is the ‘accountant’ in the senior team. While Mosaddek’s unbeaten five-ball 11 in the last over of the third ODI exuded promise, he deserves greater depth and extent of opportunity as a proper middle-order batsman. But having been out for six months due to an eye condition, he has had to relinquish his regular batting slot across formats. With Shakib having moved to No. 3, perhaps he could have been assigned a middle-order role anywhere between Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah, but in all three games Mahmudullah was more of a requirement in the last 15 overs, given the big top-order partnerships.None of Mominul, Ariful or Nurul had much to show for during the tour either. Nurul made a mark with his counter-attacking, second-innings 64 in the first Test, especially in light of the collective failure of the rest of the line-up. But the pair he collected in the second Test exposed his technical frailties.Mominul’s outing in the Test series was his worst in five years, but he did admit after returning to Dhaka that an overemphasis required on negotiating the short ball and not so much the fast, full deliveries that hampered his fluency against Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel.Ariful, meanwhile, is on the other end of the experience scale, though he would rue not making the most of the 10.3 overs he had at his disposal in the first T20I to muster a score higher than 15. He hasn’t done enough to grab the No. 7 position in the T20I side, which means the selectors cannot yet consider him in the ODIs.It is not that Bangladesh only have the likes of Sabbir and Mosaddek for lower-order positions, or that they are stuck in a cycle which warrants them to give Soumya, Liton and Anamul top-order opportunities. A cricket team with as many as eight considerably talented batsmen has to keep trying them regularly before they sync themselves with the rigours of top-level international cricket. For that to happen, though, the batsmen, on their part, have to show enough consistency and turn promise into performance.
