Shubman Gill has won his first Test call-up on Thursday as India announced their squad for the home series against South Africa. The Under-19 World Cup winner replaced KL Rahul from the team that went to the Caribbean recently while Rohit Sharma has been green-lit as India’s new opening batsman.Rohit to captain Board President’s XI against the South Africans

Having been selected to open the batting for India in Tests, Rohit will get a sneak-peek at the South African attack when he leads the Board President’s XI in the three-day tour game in Vizianagaram starting September 26
Board President’s XI: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Mayank Agarwal, Priyank Panchal, AR Easwaran, Karun Nair, Siddhesh Lad, KS Bharat (wicket-keeper), Jalaj Saxena, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Avesh Khan, Ishan Porel, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav

Mayank Agarwal kept his spot at the top of the order but there has been a lot of speculation over who will partner him. Rohit’s name had done the rounds in the lead-up to the squad being named, with former captain Sourav Ganguly and one-time IPL team-mate Adam Gilchrist among those supporting his promotion up the Indian batting order. Then the man himself expressed his desire to do the job and chief selector MSK Prasad was happy to give Rohit all three Tests against South Africa to make his case.”Yes, we are definitely looking at him [as an opener], and we want to give him an opportunity,” Prasad said. “He [himself] is keen, and all of us in the selection committee are keen [as well]. We want to push him, and give him some opportunities up the order, and see where he stands, and then we will take a call.”He has been opening in white-ball cricket for more than a decade [since 2013]. We feel he has the ability to bat up the order, we have seen that in white-ball cricket, and if he can do that in red-ball cricket, then nothing like it. We have a lot of practice matches coming up, which will be a boost to this side.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

This continues a lengthy second coming for Rohit, who last year said he had made peace with the start-stop nature of his Test career. It was 2010 when he was supposed to don the India whites for the first time, but an ankle injury threw a spanner into those plans. He finally made that long-awaited debut three years later against West Indies and smashed back-to-back centuries, suggesting that he was more than ready for the step up to the longest format. However, issues against the moving ball have restricted him to 27 Test appearances, prompting him to go rather philosophical last May.”There’s limited time you have as a player and I have finished almost half of it. There’s no point in spending the remaining half thinking whether I’ll be picked or not. I am going forward with the theory of ‘whatever time I have, make it count’,” Rohit told , referring to his record in international red-ball cricket.Gill, meanwhile, has been banging the door down to India’s Test team for a while. In July, the 20 year-old had expressed his disappointment at not being selected for India’s tour of the West Indies, saying he expected to be there in at least one of the squads. He responded by scoring an unbeaten 204 off just 248 balls after coming in at 14 for 3 against West Indies A in the third four-day game. Earlier this week, captaining India A against South Africa A in Thiruvananthapuram, Gill scored 90 in the first innings. In 14 first-class matches so far, Gill has amassed 1443 runs at an average of 72.15 with a highest score of 268. In Ranji Trophy 2018-19, he was the top-scorer for Punjab with 728 runs at an average of 104 despite playing only five games.”He has done well both as an opener and in the middle order, so he can be a back-up for both the slots,” Prasad said. “That’s the reason when KL [Rahul] was dropped out, we had given him the opportunity, but as he keeps playing he’ll get more opportunities because he’s a player for all three formats.”Speaking specifically on Rahul, Prasad added: “To tell you the truth, I think he’s an exceptional talent. We backed him, but his form has definitely dipped in red-ball cricket. With Shikhar not there, Murali Vijay has gone out, so you need to stick with one opener. You just can’t keep changing both the openers in the side. Probably with the seniors [having] exited, KL has got more opportunities but unfortunately he was not delivering consistently, and only delivering in patches. And even during those patches you could see that brilliance in him, so that gives you confidence ‘Come on, let’s back him.’ When he’s on song, he’s a treat to watch. Whoever we give an opportunity now, we will give them a fair run. We have created a bench-strength succession chart in each department in all formats.”The rest of the team lines up as it did in the Caribbean, where Virat Kohli became India’s most successful Test captain after winning the series 2-0. Jasprit Bumrah leads the fast bowling attack alongside Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami. Both Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin, and Kuldeep Yadav too, can expect more game time with the three Tests being played in spin-friendly Visakhapatnam, Pune and Ranchi. Rishabh Pant lines up as first-choice wicketkeeper while fast bowler Umesh Yadav has been pushed out. The first Test starts on October 2.

Pensando dessa maneira, o Azulão acertou a contratação do lateral direito Gustavo Oliveira, o Gustavinho. Com passagem nas bases de São Paulo e Santos, Gustavinho defendeu o Jabaquara na última temporada.

– Espero realizar o melhor trabalho possível aqui no São Caetano, quero ajudar a equipe no decorrer do ano a alcançar seus objetivos.

Contact made: Chelsea make first move to sign £50m+ Ligue 1 striker

Chelsea are thought to be in the race to sign a new £50m+ striker, with Todd Boehly and co already registering an interest in his services.

Chelsea striker rumours

The Blues were quiet during the January transfer window, failing to make a marquee signing, with the focus at Stamford Bridge being on departures. It comes after Mauricio Pochettino admitted last month that the club would look into their attacking options after an injury to Christopher Nkunku.

"It's true that now in the next few days, we are going to see the situation. That's why I told you that I am a little worried”, said Pochettino.

"All of these situations make our job a little more difficult. I told you before that it is an exciting project but situations like this make it more difficult to change the situation and grow at a different pace."

Four forwards were offered to Chelsea as short-term solutions, including AZ Alkmaar’s Vangelis Pavlidis, Zenit St Petersburg’s Mateo Cassierra, Cercle Brugge’s Kevin Denkey and Atletico Mineiro’s Paulinho, whereas former Real Madrid star Karim Benzema was also linked.

However, attention will now be on the summer window, and it has been claimed that Napoli star Victor Osimhen has already chosen to join Chelsea. The Blues will know that a deal isn’t done until all the paperwork is signed, though, and it looks as if they have their eye on another striker plying his trade in Europe.

Chelsea make Jonathan David contact

According to Football Transfers in the last 48 hours, Lille forward Jonathan David has been gaining more interest in recent months. They report that Brentford are looking at the Canada international to replace Ivan Toney.

jonathan-david-premier-league-transfers

The Ligue 1 side could demand up to €60m (£51m) for David’s services, and it is added that Chelsea, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Manchester United, have also registered their interest over a potential deal.

David, labelled an “absolutely massive” player for Lille by Zach Lowy, moved to France from KAA Gent back in 2020 and has gone from strength to strength for his current employers. The 24-year-old can play as a centre-forward or second striker and has seen his Transfermarkt valuation double since joining Lille.

This isn’t the first time he’s been linked with a move to Chelsea, with David saying last year after rumours of a move to Stamford Bridge under Graham Potter:

“It's flattering when you are praised but personally I don't know him. The Premier League is one of the biggest leagues in the world, let's see what the future holds.

“I want to score as many goals as possible, not necessarily 20. If I can go much higher, I'll do that. But I take it game by game.”

As we know, Chelsea currently have Nicolas Jackson as their only senior striker option until the end of the season, so another marquee attacker appears to correctly be the priority in the summer, and by the looks of things, David is a player to keep an eye on ahead of the summer.

Jos Buttler reports for England training after recovering from thigh bruising

England given a boost ahead of crucial clash with West Indies in Southampton, where Moeen Ali may return after birth of second child

Jos Buttler goes for the scoop•Getty Images

Jos Buttler has given England a significant boost by reporting fit for training in Southampton, following a thigh injury sustained during last week’s victory over Bangladesh.Buttler did not keep wicket in Cardiff on Saturday – Jonny Bairstow took the gloves – after sustained heavy bruising after being hit by a delivery while batting. But he has recovered well and is all but certain to play in Friday’s match against West Indies.”He’ll be fine,” England coach, Trevor Bayliss, said. “He’ll be back and able to practice fully. It was a bit precautionary the other day. He could have kept. We just weren’t really sure if he would have been able to sprint after a high catch.”Moeen Ali was absent from Wednesday’s session, however. He was at the bedside of his wife, Firuza, as she gave birth to their second child, a daughter named Haadiya. He is expected to re-join the squad in time for training on Thursday morning, and is likely to return to the team for Friday’s game in place of one of the seamers. Bayliss hinted that the final place in the side would probably be between the new-ball bowler Chris Woakes or middle-overs seamer Liam Plunkett.”Southampton is somewhere where we have played two spinners in the past,” Bayliss said. “If Moeen does come back in – and we’ll have to have a look at the wicket first – then it is one of the pace bowlers who misses out. It is a difficult decision: you’ve got one guy who bowls up front [Woakes] who can get the ball to move off the seam versus a guy [Plunkett] that is the leading wicket-taker through those middle overs over the last few years. It’s a difficult decision and I can’t tell you right at this moment who would miss out.”ALSO READ: Archer’s presence adds spice to England-West Indies clashThe statistics would suggest Plunkett might have the better chance of retaining his place. He has been England’s most economical bowler in the tournament to date – he is conceding just 4.86 runs per over on average – and has claimed three wickets at an average of 24.33. Woakes has been England’s most expensive bowler – he is conceding 7.71 runs per over – and has claimed three wickets at a cost of 54 apiece. Woakes is the better batsman and fielder, however, and bowls in the first Powerplay, so the comparison is not entirely valid.A glance at the pitch – which is nowhere near as green as the surface seen in the match against Bangladesh – suggests England will recall Moeen. The playing area in Southampton is also much larger than the one in Cardiff – it is probably the largest among international grounds in England and Wales – so there is less chance of mis-hits carrying over the boundary. While Bayliss admitted to some concerns over the form of Adil Rashid, who came into the World Cup with a shoulder injury, he also expressed confidence in his anticipated contributions in the remainder of the tournament.”I think what he needs is more bowling whether that is in the nets or in a match,” Bayliss said. “He did have a niggle in his shoulder, but over this last couple of weeks he hasn’t had anywhere near as much of a problem with it. I don’t think the wickets have necessarily been an advantage to the spinners yet, but the further we go through the competition and maybe get a bit of drier weather and play on used pitches, he may come into his own.”England’s training session was heavily curtailed by rain on Wednesday afternoon, though West Indies were able to train in the morning. Andre Russell was a noticeable absentee – he missed the match against South Africa due to his chronic knee problem – though the team management remain confident he will be fit for Friday. Evin Lewis, however, was able to return to training after recovering from a hand injury.

Wolves’ potential starting XI after January including the "next Mbappe"

Wolverhampton Wanderers will expect to have a busy January off the field, with numerous outgoings and arrivals potentially on the cards.

Gary O'Neil's side have already made progress this season since the boss joined in the summer, but in order to break into the top half of the table, the Old Gold must look to the transfer market for reinforcement.

With that in mind, let's take a look at what a new-look Wolves side could look like, if their dream transfer targets were acquired this window, with three new faces entering the side.

1 GK – Jose Sa

Wolverhampton Wanderers'JoseSa

The Portuguese shot-stopper has started 18 matches in the Premier League this season, making 2.9 saves per game. Jose Sa is the first-choice goalkeeper for Wolves, and that is set to be the case for the remainder of the season.

2 RCB – Max Kilman

Max Kilman

Wolves captain Max Kilman is one of the first names on the teamsheet, and he will continue to be at the heart of O'Neil's backline for the rest of the campaign.

The 26-year-old has played in every game this season for his side, providing leadership and calmness to the team, both in and out of possession.

3 CB – Craig Dawson

The 33-year-old defender is a rock in the middle of the back three, providing the side with a no-nonsense approach to defending.

Craig Dawson has played every Premier League game he's been available for this season, and he opened his account for the season recently against Everton.

Wolves looking at signing Hojlund 2.0 who made Dawson "look quite silly"

Wolves are showing interest in a current Premier League striker

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 17, 2024 4 LCB – Toti Gomes

Toti Gomes has worked his way into the side this season after failing to earn a spot straight away in August. The left-footed defender loves to defend, using his athleticism to nullify opposition wingers.

The Portuguese star will continue to be deployed as the left-centre-back after the January window.

5 RM – Nelson Semedo

Nelson Semedo keeps his spot in his usual wide-right role, operating up and down the flank to provide support defensively and offensively.

The 30-year-old has started all but one game in the league this season, keeping Matt Doherty out of the side.

6 CM – Pablo Rosario

The first new name in the Wolves XI is Pablo Rosario of French side Nice.

According to the reports, Wolves are monitoring the midfielder and have been watching him over the last few months, while he has been helping his side climb up to second in Ligue 1.

His addition in the side means that Joao Gomes could potentially drop out entirely, which is the case due to reports via the Evening Standard stating that the 22-year-old is piquing the interest of Spurs this window. However, the Dutch star would have big boots to fill in the middle of the park.

7 CM – Mario Lemina

Wolves midfielder Mario Lemina.

Mario Lemina is the powerhouse in the midfield, providing physicality and an immense work rate. He ensures security out of possession by making the second-highest number of tackles in the side, 2.5.

The Gabon international has started 17 matches in the Premier League while also becoming a threat in the final third, as shown by his four goals already, the third most in the Wolves squad.

8 LM – Rayan Ait Nouri

Just like Semedo on the opposite flank, 22-year-old Rayan Ait Nouri provides an endless amount of energy down the left-hand side.

The Algerian has nailed down the role as the left midfielder/wing-back, playing in 17 of the 20 Premier League matches played so far. He's also a threat going forward and has the third-highest number of successful dribbles per game in the team, 1.8.

9 RF – Matheus Cunha

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

Matheus Cunha has been one of Wolves' most influential players this campaign, starting every game, scoring six goals, and providing five assists.

The Brazilian is a handful, as he has the most shots per game in the Wolves team and the most successful dribbles.

The 24-year-old has featured mainly as a left, inverted forward where he can avoid being isolated and pick up the ball on the half turn, but with the next addition in the side, he may be forced over to the right.

10 LF – Jack Clarke

Jack Clarke

The second potential new signing to feature in the starting XI is Jack Clarke of Championship side Sunderland, with Wolves interested in the ace as per the Northern Echo.

The tricky winger is the heartbeat and goal-scoring outlet of his side, as he has netted 13 goals in 27 matches this season, which is the fourth most in the entire league. Clarke is a traditional direct attacker who can carry the ball brilliantly and glide past opponents, as highlighted by the above statistics being in the top 1% of wingers in the second division according to FBref.

Pablo Sarabia is the player who would make way for the 23-year-old in the side, and in truth, Clarke would be an upgrade on the Spaniard, who could potentially be on his way back to Spain due to interest from Real Sociedad, as per news outlet AS.

Man Utd approach Mauricio Pochettino & Thomas Frank with Erik ten Hag still in danger of sack despite FA Cup final triumph

Ten Hag under pressure to keep Man Utd jobUnited approach Pochettino and FrankDutchman may be sacked despite FA Cup winWHAT HAPPENED?

The Telegraph claims United manager Ten Hag is at 'serious risk' of being sacked, despite their FA Cup final win over Manchester City on Saturday. The report adds the Red Devils will conduct a thorough season review this week before Ten Hag's fate will be determined. After holding talks with the representatives of Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, United's team have met with the camps of Brentford manager Frank and Pochettino – who left Chelsea on Tuesday.

United's season has, somewhat, been saved by their FA Cup triumph – the second trophy of the Ten Hag era after last year's Carabao Cup success. However, they had their lowest-ever Premier League finish of eighth and suffered an ignominious Champions League group stage exit. The fact that they are still looking at alternatives to the former Ajax boss arguably shows how disappointed the club's board are with their 2023-24 campaign.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ten Hag said he "didn't know" if he would be kept on at United but insisted if he does leave he will "go somewhere else to win trophies, because that is what I do". The Dutchman also repeatedly stressed that the club's injury situation this season is a huge reason why they have underwhelmed this term.

Bairstow, Warner in record stand as Royal Challengers Bangalore slump again

With their third straight opening century stand, with the highest ever opening partnership in IPL, and with rapid centuries of their own, Jonny Bairstow and David Warner consigned Royal Challengers Bangalore to their third straight loss. The 232 chase fell on Virat Kohli’s shoulder early in the innings, as Mohammed Nabi removed the top order, including the big scalp of AB de Villiers in the first four overs. Kohli crawled to 3 off nine in the Powerplay, but was out soon after. At one point, RCB slumped to 30 for 5, and it was game over. The Warner-Bairstow demolitionSunrisers reached the IPL final last year without Warner. This year, without Kane Williamson, their captain and IPL 2018’s highest run-getter, they’ve put on three century opening stands. On Sunday, the demolition mantle was taken over by Bairstow, who scored his second T20 century and first in the IPL, off 52 balls.Kohli opted to bat because he expected the pitch to be slow in the first innings. He opened the bowling with Moeen Ali, and immediately saw Bairstow go after him. The second ball was swept for four to begin the boundary barrage. While Warner made room for deliveries that were outside off for punches and drives, and walked across to swat and nudge the others on the leg side, Bairstow mainly targeted the leg side right throughout. In the Powerplay, Bairstow hit Mohammed Siraj for consecutive fours in the fourth and sixth overs when he went short or wide. There was a hint of the openers slowing down when 16-year-old debutant legspinner Prayas Ray Barman conceded only six off his first over, the seventh of the innings, but they didn’t take long to line him up. Bairstow tore into Barman off his next.He followed an inside-out six over the covers with two fours on the leg side to bring up a 28-ball half-century. Bairstow even hogged the strike from there for the rest of the partnership, with plenty of swipes and lofted sixes on the leg side, mixed with technically-correct drives and punches when required.Bairstow was equally punishing off Colin de Grandhomme, dispatching two slower short balls for six. Exactly three overs after Warner brought up his 32-ball fifty in the 13th over, Bairstow reached his century with a couple off Barman. He celebrated the milestone the way Warner does – with a running leap and helmet in his hand. His first 50 runs saw more runs through fours (nine) than sixes (one), but his acceleration from 50 to 100 featured four sixes and only three fours.Barman returned to bowl the 16th, and conceded 20, the most expensive over of the innings. Bairstow fell soon after, but the damage had been done. Warner was on 70 off 42 balls then with 21 deliveries to go. From there, he struck Siraj and Umesh for sixes, and ran several singles and doubles even after he had batted through a hot Hyderabad afternoon. With a single on the last ball of the 19th over, he had six balls to face and seven to get to century. By steering a low full toss past short third man for four, Warner showed the original celebratory leap for his fourth IPL hundred. Siraj’s 0 for 38 were the most economical figures of the innings.BCCI

The Nabi and Sandeep damageWith that stiff a target, Royal Challengers opened with Shimron Hetmyer instead of Moeen but the move didn’t work. Nabi struck off the last ball of his second over when Parthiv chipped a full toss to cover for 11. Hetmyer struck Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a six next over but stepped out as soon as Nabi returned and was stumped by Bairstow for 9. De Villiers averted Nabi’s hat-trick but was out trying to loft over cover, only to be undone by flight and turn. All eyes were on Kohli now, especially Sandeep’s. The swing bowler had already dismissed Kohli fives times previously in the IPL and made it six in only 42 balls overall in 10 innings, although with an innocuous delivery. Kohli drilled a full delivery from outside off straight to cover and with him gone for 3 off 10, the visitors’ hopes were dashed. To add to their misery, there were three run-outs, but all while they were trying to delay the inevitable.Barman and de Grandhomme’s 51-run stand helped lend some respectability. De Grandhomme struck a six and two fours off Rashid Khan in consecutive overs while Barman tried rotating the strike to keep the partnership run rate over six an over. That, however, only narrowed the margin of another humiliating loss for Royal Challengers.

Martin drops Adams in Southampton’s predicted lineup vs Blackburn

Southampton have now extended their unbeaten run in the Championship to 13 matches, despite picking up successive draws away from home to stop a lengthy winning streak.

Russell Martin's Saints have won six of their last ten matches in the division, putting themselves firmly in the promotion reckoning as a result.

Blackburn Rovers are the visitors to the south coast this Saturday, with Martin's men keen to add another win to their season tally at the expense of Jon Dahl Tomasson's entertaining Riversiders.

The Southampton boss could reshuffle his side slightly for the task of overcoming Dahl Tomasson's men from Lancashire, with Che Adams one of a number of first-teamers potentially facing the chop.

Here's how the Saints could line up for the game tomorrow…

1 GK – Gavin Bazunu

Southampton'sGavinBazunu

Gavin Bazunu should retain his spot in between the sticks for the home game, the Irish shot-stopper signed from Manchester City in the summer keeping back-to-back clean sheets at St Mary's before his side picked up two subsequent away draws.

2 RB – Kyle Walker-Peters

kyle-walker-peters-southampton

Kyle Walker-Peters will also start versus Blackburn, the Saints right-back has barely put a foot wrong all season which has meant he's been everpresent in Martin's side in the Championship.

3 CB – Taylor Harwood-Bellis

Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis' reputation in the game continues to increase with the Saints, the Man City loanee excelling in the second tier once again after a promising loan switch to Burnley last campaign.

The 21-year-old's display in the away draw at Watford was particularly impressive, winning all but one of his duels in the 1-1 contest, as per Sofascore.

4 CB – Jan Bednarek

Jan Bednarek

Southampton's more experienced centre-back option will also start the Blackburn game, the ever-reliable Jan Bednarek a colossus in the second tier to date.

The Polish defender was a standout performer at the back versus Coventry last game, accurate with 96% of his passes in a calm display.

5 LB – Ryan Manning

Southampton defender Ryan Manning.

Ryan Manning should be the final part of an unchanged defence for Martin, the ex-Swansea City defender important for the Saints this campaign.

Manning's threat from down the channels stood out against the Sky Blues at the CBS Arena, accurate with two crosses in the game in an attempt to assist a Saints forward to gain a win.

6 CM – Joe Aribo

Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo.

The first switch in personnel Martin will ponder over is axing Shea Charles from his lineup potentially, the Saints splashing the cash on the former Man City man in the summer by paying £15m to land his services.

He was below-par away at Coventry mid-week however – only winning three of his eight duels – and so could be sacrificed for Aribo to be pushed back into a more comfortable central midfield slot.

Aribo played behind Adam Armstrong in an advanced role against Mark Robins' men, but is far more suited to a deeper central midfield role – scoring 11 times from this position when playing for Rangers before switching to the Saints.

7 CM – Will Smallbone

Will Smallbone.

Martin will toy with the idea of starting Flynn Downes for this contest – Downes missing from the Coventry match owing to illness – but risking a star player feels unnecessarily risky when you have Will Smallbone to fall back on.

Smallbone was excellent in Southampton's last second-tier match in mid-week, 100% successful with his ground duels.

Therefore, Martin might not need to bring Downes back into the starting lineup immediately especially if the West Ham United loanee isn't at full freshness just yet.

8 CM – Stuart Armstrong

Stuart Armstrong

The creativity potentially lacking from the side with Downes out won't be as noticeable with Stuart Armstrong present in the starting eleven, the ex-Dundee United man enjoying a fine season to date at St Mary's.

The ageing Scotsman wasn't at his free-flowing best away at Coventry – losing possession 20 times – but he's done more than enough in other games this campaign to make that third central midfield spot his own.

Creating four big chances this campaign dictating play in the middle, Martin will hope Armstrong can be at his creative best up against tricky opponents in Blackburn tomorrow.

9 AM – Carlos Alcaraz

Southampton's Carlos Alcaraz.

In place of Aribo being moved back, Carlos Alcaraz could be given a start by Martin for the home game against the Riversiders.

The Argentine attacker hasn't really gotten into his groove in the second tier for the Saints this season – only helping himself to a single goal in league action – but he was impressive nonetheless when substituted on against Coventry.

Winning three out of three ground duels from a rowdy eight minutes on the pitch, Alcaraz could be the aggressive and forward-thinking figure Martin wants to get his team firing again and beating teams with ease instead of settling for draws.

10 AM – Samuel Edozie

Southampton winger Samuel Edozie.

In the other attacking midfielder spot, Martin could axe Adams for Samuel Edozie who made even more of an impact last game than Alcaraz when introduced.

Edozie would ensure the Saints travelled back to the South Coast with a share of the spoils, hammering home an effort after an Adam Armstrong nod-on found him ready to fiercely fire a strike.

Edozie's skilful reputation in the game has even seen him branded with the label of being an "eye-catcher" according to football pundit Adrian Clarke on What the EFL?! Podcast, who hyped up the youngster at the start of August before the season had properly got underway.

Adams will be sacrificed to make way for Edozie to come in, the ex-Birmingham City man not even registering one shot on goal before Edozie was substituted on.

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul suspended pending inquiry

It is likely the pair will miss the remainder of the Australia tour and the upcoming limited-overs tour of New Zealand

Nagraj Gollapudi11-Jan-2019Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have been suspended from all forms of cricket pending an inquiry into their controversial comments on a recently aired TV show. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) that is overseeing the functioning of the BCCI has sent fresh show-cause notices to the players, asking them for a response within seven days “as to why they should not be proceeded against for misconduct and indiscipline under Rule 41 of the BCCI Constitution”.The pair will return to India and miss the remainder of the Australia tour and the upcoming limited-overs tour of New Zealand. The selectors are expected to name their replacements in due course.”You are aware that the enquiry and proceedings against you for misconduct and indiscipline have been initiated under Rule 41 of the BCCI Constitution and the same are presently pending,” the show-cause notice, which ESPNcricinfo has accessed, read.”In terms of Rule 41(6) of the BCCI Constitution, you are hereby suspended with immediate effect from participating in any matter whatsoever in any match or function or event or activity that is authorized, organized, sanctioned, recognized or supported in any way by the BCCI, the ICC or any State Association, until final adjudication of the matter.”The CoA has taken on board the recommendation of the BCCI’s legal team that Pandya and Rahul be suspended pending an inquiry. This was the procedure the BCCI followed when its CEO Rahul Johri faced sexual harassment allegations last October. The recommendation has the support of the CoA member Diana Edulji, a former India women captain, and the BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary,”Based on the legal opinion and till the time the final procedure is laid down to address this issue, will recommend that a communication be sent to the concerned players and the team immediately,” Edulji said in response to the legal team’s email on Friday morning, which has been accessed by ESPNcricinfo.”It will be imperative that the players be put under suspension till a further course of action is decided for this misconduct as was done in the case of CEO when he was sent on leave in the sexual harassment matter.”Choudhary agreed with Edulji’s view in a separate email. In reply to the first show-cause notice issued by the BCCI earlier this week, both Pandya and Rahul had apologised for their conduct. Both Pandya and Rahul have been part of India’s practice sessions in Sydney leading up to Saturday’s first ODI. On Friday, India captain Virat Kohli said their comments were not acceptable. This latest controversy, coming immediately in the wake of India’s triumph in the Test series in Australia, has once again split the BCCI and the CoA. Vinod Rai, the CoA chairman, had initially recommended a two-match suspension for the players, while Anirudh Chaudhry, the BCCI treasurer, had called for stricter sanctions. Acting secretary Choudhary wanted the pair suspended “immediately”.At Edulji’s behest, the BCCI’s legal team gave its inputs as to the way forward, and whether and how the players could be charged under the board’s new constitution, which came into effect in August 2018. The legal team ruled out charging Pandya and Rahul for violating the BCCI’s Code of Conduct, which applies strictly to on-field actions. As per the new BCCI constitution, the power to sanction players for indiscipline or misconduct is to rest with the BCCI’s Apex Council. The constitution specifies that the BCCI CEO seek an explanation from the players through an initial show-cause notice and the CEO’s report is to be forwarded by the Apex Council to an Ombudsman, who determines what sanctions are binding. The BCCI, pending fresh elections, does not have either an Apex Council or an Ombudsman. The legal team has suggested that the CoA, as the authorised head of the BCCI currently, could substitute for the Apex Council. The legal team also pointed out that CEO Rahul Johri’s initial show-cause notices to Pandya and Rahul had not included specific rules under which the pair could be charged subject to an inquiry. The legal team suggested that Johri send fresh show-cause notices to both players and that he submit his final report within 15 days. The team also recommended that an ad-hoc Ombudsman, meeting the criteria set by the BCCI constitution, be appointed to adjudicate on the matter within the maximum prescribed period of 6 months from the date the player is charged.”Considering that the inquiry process against the concerned players has commenced and is pending, it is open for the COA to suspend the concerned players (along with their privileges and benefits) pending enquiry and proceeding into the charges of misconduct until final adjudication,” the legal team said in its email to the CoA, the office bearers and the BCCI’s professional management.

Chelsea player ratings vs Man City: Nicolas Jackson what have you done?! Blues striker's absolutely abysmal finishing ensures more Wembley pain for Mauricio Pochettino's men

The Senegalese striker was woeful in front of goal and his wastefulness cost his team a place in the final

Chelsea's hope of finishing this dismal season with a trophy were killed off as Bernardo Silva smashed home a late goal to help Manchester City to a 1-0 win in the semi-final of the FA Cup. Mauricio Pochettino's team were left to rue their missed chances after enjoying bright spells throughout the game, but their lack of firepower let them down in the end.

With City struggling to get up and running just days after their midweek heartbreak against Real Madrid, Chelsea enjoyed the brighter start to the game. They should have gone ahead, too, as Nicolas Jackson had a massive opportunity to break the deadlock in the 30th minute. He was sent through to go one-on-one with Stefan Ortega but was unable to unleash a shot after rounding the goalkeeper and ended up giving possession to City.

The striker had two back-to-back opportunities to fire his team into the lead early in the second half, but saw both – a low shot and a header from close range – kept out by Ortega. Later in the half, he raced towards the City goal, with Kyle Walker matching him stride for stride, before knocking Jackson to the ground, but the forward's appeal for a penalty was dismissed.

With Jackson faltering, Blues hero Cole Palmer, captain Conor Gallagher and winger Noni Madueke were unable to compensate and find the decisive touch to capitalise on their team's smart build-up play. All those missed chances came back to haunt them when the ball fell to Silva in the box and the Portuguese star had plenty of time to fire it in through a deflection off of Marc Cucurella.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Wembley Stadium…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Djordje Petrovic (7/10):

Pulled off a couple of good saves in the second half after a quiet first 45 minutes. A reliable presence in general.

Malo Gusto (7/10):

Another strong display for the young right-back as he dug in with solid tackles and charged up field to link up with Madueke.

Trevoh Chalobah (6/10):

Was stable in possession and helped keep the defence in shape.

Thiago Silva (7/10):

Helped frustrate City with some excellent clearances and passes.

Marc Cucurella (6/10):

Too slow to close down on one or two occasions – including for the goal – but made some good interventions and tried to overlap Gallagher on the wing.

Moises Caicedo (5/10):

A bit reckless with his tackles even after being shown a yellow card late in the first half.

Enzo Fernandez (6/10):

Fought hard in the middle of the pitch but his passing was not up to scratch.

Cole Palmer (7/10):

The true leader of this Chelsea team with his excellent all-round play and determination to win possession and get quick moves up and running. Unfortunate not to score.

GettyAttack

Conor Gallagher (6/10):

Tried to win the ball high up the field and kickstart attacks but not a lot worked in his favour.

Nicolas Jackson (3/10):

So tame with his finishing as he wasted numerous chances. A huge opportunity in the first half saw him cut back inside and fail to get a shot away, and then he squandered two more at the start of the second period. Just looked uncomfortable every time he got on the ball.

Noni Madueke (6/10):

Tried to act as a direct threat with his dribbles and shots but City cut him out well.

GettySubs & Manager

Mykhailo Mudryk (5/10):

Did not get much of a chance to create danger in his 10 minutes on the field.

Axel Disasi (6/10):

Slotted in at right-back for the end of the game.

Ben Chilwell (5/10):

Had a good chance to create something as he charged down the left wing but took too long and his cross was blocked.

Raheem Sterling (N/A):

Barely had a touch of the ball in his brief time on the field.

Mauricio Pochettino (7/10):

His team were set up solidly defensively and did well to keep City quiet for the majority of the game but the weaknesses of Jackson, Gallagher and Madueke hold them back significantly.
