'It's made me a better player' – Ricardo Pepi sees the bright side of lack of PSV playing time after USMNT forward scores late winner against Twente

Ricardo Pepi says his limited but important role for PSV has helped him become a "better player and person" after scoring the winning goal on Sunday.

  • Admits lack of playing time is 'difficult'
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The United States international came off the bench in the 80th minute with the game against Twente still goalless. The forward grabbed a last-minute goal to secure the three points after Luuk de Jong won possession and fellow USMNT player Malik Tillmann squared to Pepi to apply the finish. Pepi has

  • WHAT PEPI SAID

Pepi has built a reputation as a bit of a super-sub since joining PSV and when asked if he gets frustrated by his lack of playing time, he told : "It's difficult but I think it's made me a better player, it's made me a better person, it's showed me how to have a little bit more patience and that's my role at the moment."

On his goal, the the 21-year-old said: "Once I saw Luuk steel the ball, I wanted to make sure that I was inside the box, that's where you can make a difference. I felt like I was in the right place at the right moment and the ball came towards me and I had to put it into the back of the net."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pepi has scored nine goals for the unbeaten Eredivisie leaders but has not been able to secure a place in Peter Bosz's starting XI. He has started only two matches in all competitions – one in each of the Eredivisie and Champions League – and Bosz is aware that he is having a tough time with his role.

"It seems like the fewer minutes you give him, the more he scores," the coach told reporters. "You know that with him you are bringing in someone who scores easily and does not need much time to do so. That's nice."

He added: "Of course I have a conversation with him every now and then. Then he always says: I understand. He has the captain in front of him who is having a great season, scoring a lot and providing a lot of assists. I have noticed lately that he is starting to find it difficult. He trains very well and takes huge steps. In positional games you see that he is becoming increasingly ball-resistant. And then he has to start on the bench every time. That's difficult."

    WHAT NEXT FOR PEPI?

Pepi will continue to fight for his place in the PSV first-team when he returns from the CONCACAF Nations League finals with the USMNT.

However, Bosz cannot guarantee him more starts any time soon, adding: "But he has the American attitude. Lately I have been trying to get them to play together, but if you suddenly start playing with two centre-forwards, you also change the way you play. And there is no reason for that. That's the difficulty for Pepi."

Sheff Wed: Chansiri now looking at move for "superb" 3-4-1-2 manager

Sheffield Wednesday are searching for a replacement for Xisco Munoz as manager, and a new name has been thrown into the hat, courtesy of journalist Ricky Charlesworth.

Latest Sheff Wed manager news; Jones, Warnock

The Owls have made a disastrous start to the season in the Championship, having earned promotion from League One in such thrilling fashion last time around.

On Tuesday night, Wednesday were beaten 1-0 away to West Brom, and while it was far from an embarrassing result, it was still another defeat that left them further adrift at the bottom of the table. They have picked up just two points from their opening 10 league matches in 2023/24 to date, also scoring only five times.

That loss at the Hawthorns proved to be the final straw with Xisco, with those high up at Hillsborough, including owner Dejphon Chansiri, relieving him of his duties on Wednesday evening, despite only replacing Darren Moore as manager during the summer.

The search is now on to find a perfect replacement for the Spaniard, and a number of names have already emerged as potential options, including Nathan Jones and Neil Warnock. Now, a new face appears to have entered the picture, following a fresh Sheffield Wednesday manager update.

New Sheff Wed manager target

Taking to X, Sheff Wed reporter for The Examiner Charlesworth claimed that Oscar Garcia is seen as a "prominent" option to come in and fill the void left by Xisco in the Hillsborough hot seat:

"Understand Oscar Garcia is a prominent name on Wednesday’s shortlist. Ex-Brighton and Watford boss. Managed all over Europe, last post was Reims in France."

It is encouraging to see the Owls looking at so many options already, with their next appointment such a crucial one, in terms of steering them away from the threat of relegation back to League One, which would be an almighty blow after only one year away.

In Garcia, Wednesday would be bringing in a manager with plenty of experience at a high level, having spent time in England before, as Charlesworth alludes to. He prefers a 3-4-1-2 formation, suggesting he is a modern coach with fresh ideas, using wing-backs effectively, which the likes of Liam Palmer and Marvin Johnson have been used to already under previous managers.

The 50-year-old is also a three-time league champion, which is nothing to be sniffed at, having won two Austrian Bundesliga titles with RB Salzburg in 2015/16 and 2016/17 – he won the Austrian Cup in both of those seasons, too – and one Israeli crown with Maccabi Tel Aviv back in 2012/13. He has also been hailed as "superb" by French media in recent times, following his spell at Reims.

There may be some Wednesday fans who are concerned that Garcia could be a little too similar to Xisco, in terms of background and style – the fact that he has also managed Watford plays into that narrative – but if the club see him as the best option, a move could be one to keep an eye on. In truth, things could have been so much simpler if Moore had stayed put beyond the summer, so yu could argue that owner Chansiri arguably has a lot to answer for, in that respect.

O que acha do desempenho atual do time?

Aumento no patrimônio do clube.

Southampton: Poch flop bled the Saints dry of £25m, then left for £0

Southampton are well-known for churning out talent from their academy setup and selling them on for huge profits in the future.

James Ward-Prowse is the most recent of those to have demonstrated the quality being produced from the Saints' academy having followed in the footsteps of the likes of Luke Shaw, Theo Walcott and five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Gareth Bale.

While the relentless production of talent coming from their academy is impressive – as emphasised this season through 17-year-old Samuel Amo-Ameyaw being rewarded with a chance in the first team – Southampton have also become renowned for signing young players at comparatively small fees and nurturing their development before selling at a significant profit.

The most blatant example of that fact was their £13m acquisition of Virgil van Dijk from Celtic in 2015 with the Dutchman quickly rising to prominence as one of the best defenders in the league, as the Saints pocketed a hefty £75m from Liverpool two and a half years later.

In 2022, Ralph Hasenhuttl unearthed a gem from Manchester City as Romeo Lavia joined the club for £10.5m and although the South Coast club were relegated from the Premier League, Lavia's impressive performances earned him a £58m move to Chelsea this summer, making them a cool £48m on their investment.

Southampton are experts when it comes to signing young players for a cheap and turning a huge profit, but have buckled under the pressure of spending big money on more experienced talents, wasting millions on Dani Osvaldo, who demonstrated that the Saints haven't always been smart with their business.

How much did Southampton pay for Dani Osvaldo?

During Mauricio Pochettino's tenure at the club, the Argentine was in desperate need of a striker to help them become more ruthless in front of goal and after managing him at Espanyol, where he chalked up 20 goals in 45 appearances, Pochettino decided to break the bank to lure Osvaldo to the Premier League.

Joining from Roma for a club record fee of £15m in 2013, the Italian promised to live up to the price tag having amassed an eye-watering 34 goal contributions in 55 appearances in the Serie A.

Despite his impressive rate of scoring, Roma's coach at the time, Rudi Garcia, questioned Osvaldo's attitude during a friendly with Turkish side Bursaspor in 2013, stating that the 27-year-old's behaviour would cause serious problems unless he changed his attitude.

He said: “He is a great striker, but his personality is a serious issue.

“[For instance], in my opinion, he shouldn’t have reacted to the fans’ jeers, although I do understand it’s hard not to do when you’re being insulted."

In that one moment, warning signs were thrown towards Southampton, but they chose to ignore them. Indeed, Pochettino thought his attitude wouldn't get in the way of his performances, and it turned out he was wrong.

What happened to Dani Osvaldo next?

As a club record signing, a lot is expected, especially as a striker. Supporters were expecting Osvaldo to become their next heroic goalscorer, following in the footsteps of Rickie Lambert, but how his Southampton career unravelled instead left supporters pulling their hair out.

In 13 appearances for the club in the 2013/14 campaign, Osvaldo's only moment of brilliance came against Manchester City, as his superbly curled effort helped the Saints to a point against the eventual champions.

"From now on I can show how much I can do, and how well I can perform,” the Italian said, after scoring his third – and last – Southampton goal.

Although he offered words of encouragement to supporters, he failed to kick on from there, headbutting Jose Fonte in training, an incident that ultimately ended his career in England.

Osvaldo spent just 166 days at the club before he was shipped out of the club to Juventus on loan, failing to impress at the Old Lady before Southampton released him in 2015 after he'd bled the club dry of £25m, including fees and wages, across two years.

After retiring at 30-years-old in 2016, the Italian outlined his hatred towards football in an interview with Fox Sports, saying: “Football was not happy, it is a world full of ****." You can imagine the ending of that.

As far as record signings go, Osvaldo will go down as one of the worst in Premier League history.

Barry Ferguson Rips Into Rangers Supporter After Celtic Defeat

Rangers were beaten 1-0 at home to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership over the weekend and it has led to a fierce debate over the future of manager Michael Beale.

Did Rangers deserve to lose to Celtic?

The Gers were hoping to overtake their rivals in the SPL table on Sunday afternoon, knowing that victory would take them two points ahead of them, giving them an early advantage in the title race in the process.

Instead, it proved to be a hugely frustrating afternoon at Ibrox, with Kyogo Furuhashi's late first-half strike ending up being the difference between the two sides.

Kemar Roofe had seen a goal ruled out by VAR before Celtic had opened the scoring – it was either a harsh or a fair decision, depending on your stance or level of bias – and Beale's side never truly threatened to consistently create chances after that goal, despite some half-decent openings.

The defeat has cranked up the pressure on Beale, who was already feeling the heat going into the match, having overseen a dreadful 5-1 loss away to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last week.

There is now much debate of whether the Englishman should keep his job or not, and it is certainly a talking point that is creating plenty of anger among the Rangers fanbase.

Rangers head coach Michael Beale.

What has Barry Ferguson said about Michael Beale?

Speaking in response to an angry caller on The Go Radio Football Show on Sunday, former Rangers captain Ferguson reacted angrily to being told he was a "cheerleader" for Beale, claiming calls for the manager's head are "absolute garbage":

"What are you talking about cheerleader? You are four games into a season and you are wanting a manager out? I totally disagree with you, there you go. I totally disagree with you and I am allowed my opinion. How am I a cheerleader for him? Don't say I am a cheerleader. You are talking absolute nonsense mate."

The behaviour from the Gers fan accusing Ferguson of being a cheerleader is indicative of the modern football supporter, with so many feeling that former players try too hard to defend managers and generally stick up for the club they used to be play for.

This is largely nonsense, of course, and Ferguson is simply showing some patience with Beale, feeling that sacking a manager just four games into the new season would be knee-kerk by Rangers, at a time when there is no need to panic and stability is needed at Ibrox.

Granted, the last two matches clearly haven't been good enough, and the manager deserves a lot of the criticism that has come his way, but while in the past bosses were given more time to overcome a difficult period for their team, there are now calls for sackings to take place as soon as a slightly iffy spells arrive.

For now, Beale arguably has enough credit in the bank to keep his job, but if results don't improve a lot once the international break is over, a decision may have to be made.

Liverpool: Klopp Could Land Guimaraes Answer In 23 y/o "Controller"

A surprise transfer target has emerged for Liverpool this week, with manager Jurgen Klopp looking to end the transfer window on a high and complete his side's midfield rebuild.

The Reds missed out on signing both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia this month after selling Fabinho to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad Club for £40m in July, and have since opted to delve down the shrewder road and sealed an unlikely £16m move for Stuttgart's Wataru Endo.

Klopp could now be set to seek another astute option, with dynamic Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer attracting the Merseyside outfit's attention, per reports.

What's the latest on Mats Wieffer to Liverpool?

According to FootballTransfers, Liverpool are interested in signing Wieffer to add depth and quality to their midfield before the transfer window closes in one week.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Alongside Endo, the Premier League side have completed deals for engine room duo Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wieffer could add the multi-faceted sheen to close the door on the central signings this summer.

Who is Mats Wieffer?

The 23-year-old Dutchman played 37 times across all competitions last season, scoring three goals and providing seven assists, and was instrumental in Feyenoord's emphatic Eredivisie triumph.

While Wieffer can thrive across a range of midfield roles, he occupied the deep-lying role on 33 occasions last year, and could be the dream fit to compete against Endo – more of a traditional No. 6 – for the holding midfield role under Klopp.

Indeed, the midfield machine ranks among the top 7% of midfielders across Men's Next Eight divisions for assists, the top 5% for passes attempted, the top 7% for progressive passes, the top 14% for successful take-ons, the top 20% for tackles, the top 18% for blocks, the top 8% for clearances and the top 1% for aerial wins per 90, as per FBref.

This exhaustive list underscores the kind of all-encompassing ace Liverpool would get their hands on if they are to forge ahead with a move during the business end of the transfer window, and given the likeness to Newcastle United's star man Bruno Guimaraes, it might be the move to make.

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Hailed as "world-class" by teammate Dan Burn, Guimaraes has been the centrepiece of the Magpies' momentous exploits over the past two years, having chalked up after completing a £40m transfer from French side Lyon in January 2022.

A deep-lying midfielder, Guimaraes ranks among the top 18% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 14% for shot-creating actions, the top 13% for progressive passes and the top 18% for successful take-ons per 90.

He also made 2.4 tackles per game in the Premier League last season and won 57% of his ground duels, remarkably composed and emblematic of Newcastle's ascent of late.

Similarities can be drawn from the Brazilian's skill set and Wieffer's, with the latter man being described as an "elite" midfielder "controller" by data analyst Ben Mattinson.

If Klopp can utilise Wieffer's ball-playing skills and tenacity in the tackle, he could wield a star capable of matching Guimaraes' influence on English soil, and given that Liverpool have actually registered an interest in the 25-year-old machine earlier this year, he evidently offers a profile that is capable of slotting into the Reds' team.

Crystal Palace Set To Lose Star For Summer Steal

christopher-nkunku

According to Dan Bardell, whoever put in the release clause in Michael Olise's Crystal Palace contract must be "absolutely fuming" with the recent developments for a key reason.

The 21-year-old looks set to depart Palace this summer after two seasons at Selhurst Park.

What is the latest news on Michael Olise?

Olise looks set to make the switch to Chelsea in the coming days.

That is according to David Ornstein, who reports that on Tuesday the Blues activated the release clause in the young Frenchman's contract and expect to complete the deal for the currently injured forward in the coming days. It is believed that Palace will receive a guaranteed £35m from the deal that will take the former Reading man to Stamford Bridge, and take Chelsea's spending for this window to over £300m.

michael-olise-premier-league-transfers-chelsea

The Blues weren't the only side interested in the creator, with Manchester City reportedly eying up the Palace star as a potential Riyad Mahrez replacement following the Algerian's switch to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ahli. Ultimately, it seems that the reigning Premier League champions have moved onto an alternative target in the form of Rennes winger Jeremy Doku, with the club reportedly having agreed personal terms with the player who Jurgen Klopp earmarked as Sadio Mane's successor in 2017.

Chelsea's summer signing Christopher Nkunku suffered a devastating knee injury in pre-season which is set to rule him out for four months, and the arrival of Olise could help fill the creativity void in the short term, and give the Blues a fantastic young option for the long term both in the middle of the park and out wide.

Speaking on Sky Sports Good Morning Transfers show, presenter Bardell praised the window that Chelsea have had so far, and stated that Crystal Palace will be gutted to lose Olise just as he was really stepping into the mold of a team player:

"Chelsea are having an incredible window with the type of player that they are bringing in under this manager. Like I said earlier, I like Olise's development. He's operated in the high-level academies, he's gone to a Championship club, got in the team there, done it in the EFL, gone to Crystal Palace and again had a good couple of seasons there learning his trade and now the time feels right to get that move to Chelsea.

"In the modern-day market as well, I mean whoever put that clause in Crystal Palace must be absolutely fuming because £35m for a 21-year-old player who has got two years in the Premier League now, someone whose game really developed last season, it felt like the end product came a little bit more last season but also if you watch him, he seemed a bit more switched on defensively, became more of a team player, so just as Palace have gotten him to that level, you're losing him for £35m which is a snip."

Will Michael Olise be a big miss?

Olise was incredibly impressive for Crystal Palace

Last season the winger made 37 appearances for the Eagles in the Premier League and was the sides second-best performer in the division according to WhoScored, being just 0.04 behind to performer Eberechi Eze. The 21-year-old recorded two goals and 11 assists whilst also recording 1.9 key passes and 1.5 successful dribbles per 90.

Olise is a creative force, who according to FBref sits in the top 10% for assists, progressive passing distance, key passes, crosses into the penalty area, and shot-creating actions per 90 minutes.

The French youth international impressed both Palace managers he played under, with Patrick Vieira stating:

"When you look at the last round and this one, he played well. He can score goals, create chances and he is a special talent."

Whilst current boss Roy Hodgson stated: "What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent – he has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”

Nottingham Forest Eye Move For £35k-A-Week Goalkeeper

Nottingham Forest are interested in potentially signing Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner during the summer transfer window, as they look to fill the current void between the sticks.

How much does Matt Turner earn?

The £35,000-a-week-earning American is currently at the Emirates after joining from MLS side New England Revolution last summer, coming in a backup option to Aaron Ramsdale.

While Turner didn't make any appearances in the Premier League in 2022/23, he did start five times in the Europa League, as well as appearing twice in the FA Cup, during a campaign that threatened to be great for the Gunners. There was also the small matter of four outings at the 2022 World Cup, including against England in the group stage.

The 29-year-old is going to continue finding it hard to oust Ramsdale at Arsenal moving forward, with the England international easily the first choice in north London, so it could be that a move elsewhere appeals to him, in order to enjoy more regular football.

With Forest looking to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, it looks as though Turner could possibly be an option to come in before the new season gets underway.

Could Nottingham Forest sign Matt Turner?

According to The Athletic, Forest are eyeing Turner as a potential signing this summer, as they look to acquire the services of a new man between the sticks:

It's added that both Arsenal and Forest are in "dialogue" over a move.

"Arsenal’s existing alternative goalkeeper, Matt Turner, is being considered by Nottingham Forest as one of two planned goalkeeping additions.

"Although there is distance between the clubs’ valuations of the 29-year-old United States international and no guarantee a move will happen, Arsenal know Forest are looking at Turner and dialogue continues."

Turner could be an interesting signing by Forest this summer, with the 32-cap USA international an experienced head at this point in his career. His year at Arsenal would stand him in good stead, having got used to the England game, and he could jump at the opportunity to start week in, week out.

Admittedly, there would potentially be some concerns over whether he is good enough to be starting for a Premier League team, having never played in a top European league until being backup with the Gunners, so someone like Dean Henderson could still be the better option, should he return to the City Ground for a second loan move, or preferably a permanent switch.

That being said, bringing in a couple of 'keepers wouldn't be a bad thing, as the report alludes to, so Turner could be a good signing either way.

His time at Arsenal will no doubt have seen picking a winning mentality of some kind, given how relentless some of their form was last season, and at 29, he could still have another decade ahead of him at this level, with so many 'keepers now able to playing until they are around 40 years of age.

Whatever happens, some swift goalkeeping business needs to be done at Forest in the next few weeks, with the Premier League opener away to Arsenal on August 12th edging closer all the time.

Aston Villa: Monchi Could Sign Biggest Coup Yet In £40m-rated "Genius"

Aston Villa are reportedly remaining on the tail of Joao Felix, as Unai Emery aims to up the quality on show at Villa Park.

This summer has been an impressive one so far for the Villans, who have secured the signatures of Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres, with Moussa Diaby reported to be on the horizon too.

Monchi and Emery could create something special in the Midlands this window, with links to players in the calibre of Felix showing the ambition of the duo at the helm.

Could Aston Villa sign Joao Felix?

Last week, reports claimed that Villa were ‘leading the race’ to sign the Portuguese gem, who spent last season on loan at Chelsea.

A report from transfer insider Dean Jones and GIVEMESPORT named the 23-year-old as one of those that could be ‘on the shopping list’ of the Midlands club, who could be priced around the £80m mark by Atletico Madrid.

The swoop for the talent would be an audacious one, however with Diaby almost secured according to Fabrizio Romano, the Villans are showing real ambition this summer.

How good is Joao Felix?

Having once been lauded as a “genius” by Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto, a figure familiar with the talents of Felix, the 23-year-old has cemented himself as one of the most talented forwards in Europe.

Snatched by Atletico in 2019, the versatile attacker wrote his name in lights in Portugal before making the move to Madrid, scoring 15 goals and registering nine assists in the Primeira Liga in the 2018/19 campaign at just 18-years-old.

Earning a £113m price tag as a teenager is an indicator of the talent on show, now, Villa could equip their side with a forward as intricate as the former LaLiga sensation.

Deployed primarily as a centre-forward, the £242k-per-week Portuguese is extremely versatile in his approach to play, with the ability to occupy wide areas and roles just behind the striker.

For the Villans, obtaining a player in the calibre of Felix could be fundamental to their growth under Emery, and could be a marquee signing alongside the talents of Diaby.

The Frenchman could gel perfectly with the Viseu-born gem, in the Spaniard’s free-flowing attack, as an individual who himself adds a significant threat to the front line.

Also hailed as being an “absolute nightmare” for defenders by scout Jacek Kulig, Felix is a livewire in the final third, as highlighted by his monstrous 4.40 total shots per 90 in the Premier League last season.

The £40m-rated whiz’s talents delve way beyond his short spell in the Premier League, with him showcasing his attributes with 2.21 successful take-ons and 0.86 goals and assists per 90 in the 2021/22 LaLiga campaign.

At just 23, Felix has exerted his ability in Spain and Portugal, with Villa’s interest paving the way for him to finish his story in England after half a season at Stamford Bridge.

Emery could cause significant problems for his side’s opponents in the league, in a piece of business that could elevate the calibre and direction of things at Villa.
