Chief selector Trevor Hohns wants to stay on post-Chappell

Australia’s selectors have been under pressure this season but it’s understood Hohns wants to continued until at least 2020

Australia’s chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns has no intention of following the soon-to-retire Greg Chappell out the door at Cricket Australia, wanting to see the role through to at least 2020 even as the governing body looks to appoint a new head of team performance and considers revising the selection structure. In the wake of Chappell’s decision, revealed by ESPNcricinfo, to exit his dual roles of selector and national talent manager when his current contract expires at the end of this year’s Ashes series, it is understood that the 65-year-old Hohns is eager to continue in a role he has held since 2016, his second stint as chairman of the panel after also doing the job from 1996 to 2006.The decisions of a selection panel comprising Hohns, Chappell and coach Justin Langer have been met with plenty of criticism this summer, far from a new thing for selectors to cope with. However, these critiques have taken place against a backdrop of debate over whether or not team performance is best served by the current selection model, and also whether younger minds, with first-hand experience of the T20 age, should be making selection decisions alongside deeper use of analytics.CA had already pared back the panel by one last year, as Mark Waugh resigned and was not replaced, leaving T20 selections solely in the hands of Langer while Hohns and Chappell continued to share deliberations over the Test and ODI teams, plus under-age, national performance and Australia A squads. The former team performance manager Pat Howard was never entirely wedded to the concept of a selection panel, and it will most likely be left up to his full-time replacement – Belinda Clark is serving as an interim – to help CA decide on the best way forward.Numerous luminaries have been connected to more substantial roles around Australian team performance, including Ricky Ponting, Simon Katich and Michael Hussey – all of whom are close to Langer. However, another strong contender is the Western Australia had of team performance Ben Oliver, who has enjoyed a varied career in cricket administration with WA, CA and also the ICC, having earlier player first-class cricket for Victoria. On the final day of the Canberra Test, Chappell discussed his reasons for flagging his intention to retire, and also the philosophy behind his choices in selecting teams. “I’m really starting to find the time away from home a bit of a struggle,” Chappell told Fox Cricket. I’ve really enjoyed my various roles in cricket, not least playing, but coaching, administering and the selecting has been a great challenge. After a cycle, after a World Cup, after an Ashes series, let someone else have a go.”Many players, coaches and observers of the game have at times wondered at the thinking behind Australia’s selections, and Chappell gave an insight that may settle a few arguments. “I think it’s a combination of the lot of it, but there is a fair bit of gut feel,” he said.”I was lucky enough to go with a CA group to America a few years ago and talk with a few different sports, and we were at the Boston Red Sox and one of their head scouts was asked the question ‘what are you looking for’, and amid a whole range of things he said ‘if they don’t look like somebody, they probably won’t be somebody’. So it’s not that you see someone who is exactly the same as someone else but you see traits in them that have succeeded before.”Probably the best example is Ian Healy, when we looked at Ian Healy years ago, there were other keepers who probably kept as well, other keepers who batted, but he just reminded us of Rod Marsh, the personality and the character of the guy. You just knew he would handle the travails of life as an international cricketer and thankfully that worked out pretty well.”In terms of what he had found most rewarding about the job, Chappell reflected on the work he had done with an enormous number of young cricketers during their formative years, whether as a selector, coach or talent manager.”The thing I enjoy most about it is they love the game as much as we ever loved the game,” he said. “I think it’s a much harder game to play now, particularly as a batsman with three formats, so to become a top class batsman is probably more challenging now than ever before, so to be able to pass on whatever knowledge you’ve accrued over 70 years of life is something that I’ve enjoyed and I think it’s kept me young. So just having that involvement has been an honour as much as anything else to be allowed to stay in the game this long.”

Aston Villa could land a dream Bailey heir in swoop for "in form" 5 ft 8 whiz

Aston Villa have enjoyed a terrific start to the 2023/24 campaign and are currently competing to secure a spot in the Champions League for next season.

The Villans are fifth in the Premier League table and they could move up and into the top four with a victory over Tottenham Hotspur, who they travel to play on Sunday.

Unai Emery has masterminded a sensational rise for the club since he replaced Steven Gerrard in the dugout last year, having led the side to Europa Conference League football after less than one full season in charge.

The Spanish tactician may now be looking to go one better and qualify for the Europa League or Champions League for the 2024/25 campaign, which they are currently on course to do.

Unai Emery

His work in the transfer market, alongside new sporting director Monchi, has helped Villa as the likes of Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby have hit the ground running in English football.

Diaby has produced three goals and three assists in 12 Premier League starts so far this season since his move from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer, and his form has kept Leon Bailey out of the starting XI for the majority of the campaign.

The Jamaica international, who has impressed when given the chance, has not been able to break into the side on a regular basis and his job could become harder if the club are able to land one of their reported targets – Jonathan Rowe.

Aston Villa transfer news – Jonathan Rowe

It was reported by TEAMtalk earlier this month that the Villans are one of a number of clubs interested in the exciting Norwich City winger ahead of the January transfer window.

Fellow Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also said to be eyeing up the Championship starlet as a possible target to bolster their respective attacks ahead of the second half of the season.

The report did, however, state that the Canaries want to keep hold of their academy product and that they would also like to tie him down to a contract extension. His current deal at Carrow Road is due to expire in 2025 but they have an option to extend that by a further 12 months.

There was no mention of how much it would take to tempt the EFL side to cash in on the England U21 international, who may be looking to follow in Emiliano Buendia's footsteps in making the transition from Norfolk to the Midlands.

The arrival of another talented wide player could make it difficult for Bailey to find regular minutes, as Rowe could come in as the dream heir to his position in the squad as someone who could compete with Diaby for a starting spot whilst also getting minutes in domestic and European cup matches.

Leon Bailey's Villa statistics

Former Villa manager Dean Smith swooped to sign Leon Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported fee of £25m and failed to hit the ground running after his move from the Bundesliga.

The left-footed forward arrived in England off the back of an impressive nine goals and eight assists across 30 league matches for the German side during the 2020/21 campaign.

His first Premier League season ended with a return of one goal and two assists in 18 outings for the Villans, who brought in Gerrard to replace Smith before the turn of the year.

Bailey's form improved the following term as he racked up four goals and four assists in 33 top-flight appearances throughout the 2022/23 campaign. However, the winger underperformed in front of goal with an xG (Expected Goals) of 5.34 and missed four 'big chances' to add to his four-goal haul.

This term, the 26-year-old wizard has already plundered three goals and three assists in ten Premier League matches and is on course to smash his tally from the previous season, despite only having an xG of 1.91 so far.

The talented attacker has also contributed with one goal and two assists in four Europa Conference League games, which shows that he can perform domestically and in Europe.

Bailey has stepped up and looks to be a useful squad option for Emery to call upon with his ability to be a scorer and a creator of goals for the side.

Jonathan Rowe's season in numbers

Rowe, however, could come in as a player with the potential to make an immediate impact on the pitch whilst also having time on his side to be a long-term prospect for the Villans if Monchi can orchestrate a deal for the gem.

He is six years younger than the current Villa forward and could, therefore, be his heir at the top end of the pitch, given his impressive form for Norwich so far this season.

Norwich forward Jonathan Rowe.

England U21 manager Lee Carsley claimed that the 20-year-old magician is "in form" and his statistics for the Canaries under David Wagner back that claim up.

Rowe has racked up eight goals and two assists in 16 starts across all competitions for the Yellows, which includes seven goals and one assist, along with one penalty won, in the Championship.

He has also scored one goal in two matches for England, despite starting neither of those games, and this means that the young ace has 11 goal contributions in 16 starts for club and country this term.

The Norwich academy graduate, who produced one assist in 13 Premier League matches during the 2021/22 campaign, also caught the eye as a scorer at youth level.

Rowe plundered 12 goals in 31 U18 outings and 11 goals in 31 U21 clashes for the Canaries before he was able to establish himself as a regular first-team performer.

The 5 foot 8 magician is also a versatile attacker who is capable of being deployed in a multitude of roles. He has played in virtually every position across the attack but has played the majority of his games either off the left wing or down the middle as an attacking midfielder.

Emery could, therefore, utilise him as one of his two forwards or as one of the wider attacking midfielders in his current system, which is why he could be a dream addition for the club.

Monchi must now work to secure a deal for the EFL starlet as the talented whiz has showcased his potential to be an impressive goalscorer from an attacking midfield or wide position and could be a long-term heir to Bailey's, or even Diaby's, position in the squad.

Chelsea must unleash "magnificent" teen gem alongside Washington

Chelsea host Blackburn Rovers in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup this evening and it is imperative that the hosts avoid any slip-ups.

The Blues have endured a season so far that has been littered with inconsistency, showing glimpses of a side that cost over £1bn to assemble, but also crumbling under the heavy weight of their lofty transfer fees.

With Mauricio Pochettino needing to shift the doom and gloom surrounding Stamford Bridge, anything other than a victory against the Championship side will undoubtedly lead to many questioning his future.

Chelsea team news vs Blackburn Rovers

In this results-driven business, Pochettino hasn't been helped by factors that are out of his hands and having to deal with several injuries to senior players is one of them.

Chelsea will be without eight players this evening, including Mykhailo Mudryk, who pulled out of the 2-0 defeat against Brentford due to a similar muscle issue.

Armando Broja, Ben Chilwell, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Trevoh Chalobah, Carney Chukwuemeka and Wesley Fofana are also out, while Chilwell has travelled overseas to step up his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury.

Ben Chiwell Chelsea

With a huge trip to table toppers Tottenham Hotspur to come on Monday night, the Argentine is likely to make a few changes to the side that lost to Brentford and utilise the full depth of his squad.

The main area that requires the most surgery is in attack. Chelsea have been toothless in the final third this term, scoring just 13 times in ten matches in the Premier League, but given they are light on options in forward areas, Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke are likely to flank Nicolas Jackson, or Pochettino could go rogue and unleash 18-year-old Deivid Washington from the off.

The Brazilian came off the bench to make his first appearance for the club on Saturday and against Championship opposition, now could be the perfect opportunity to award him with his first start.

A complete forward, who possesses the killer instinct, great off-the-ball movement, timing, intelligence, and flair in the final third, as per football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the youngster could use those attributes to devastating effect by terrorising Blackburn's defence.

Washington isn't the only teenager vying for a starting spot, however, with defensive midfielder Lesley Ugochukwku in line to partner Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez in midfield to offer Moises Caicedo the chance to rest.

Why Lesley Ugochukwu should start against Blackburn Rovers

A destructive and ball-winning midfielder, who arrived from Rennes for £23.2m in the summer, Ugochukwu has played in every minute of Chelsea's Carabao Cup victories over Wimbledon and Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 19-year-old, described by journalist Antonio Mango as "magnificent", offers an intimidating presence on the pitch due to his 6 foot 3 frame and has an aggressive approach to his game, flying into tackles and using his extreme physique to bully the opposition.

Lesley-Ugochukwu-Chelsea

The Frenchman, who has made the seamless transition from centre back to defensive midfield, utilised the above attributes along with his exceptional work rate and stamina for Rennes last term, making 26 appearances in Ligue 1.

For a young player, transitioning into a new role, Ugochukwu impressed across an array of his defensive and passing metrics when compared against his position peers in the division last season, ranking in the top 16% for blocks, top 24% for aerials won, top 22% for interceptions and top 17% for pass completion per 90, as per FBref.

Clearly an imposing figure on the pitch, Ugochukwu has showcased that in abundance across his two performances in the Carabao Cup, making 2.5 tackles per game, 6.5 ball recoveries and 2.5 duels won, via SofaScore.

With that said, Pochettino should continue trusting the teenager to put in exceptional displays, especially in this competition, by starting him ahead of Caicedo this evening.

West Ham: Moyes could ditch Antonio for prolific "under the radar" target

West Ham United are seemingly interested in a replacement for Michail Antonio. Although the Jamaican international has certainly left a mark on the Premier League following his dramatic ascent through the divisions, the 33-year-old's consistency has sometimes left fans with a lot to be desired.

Who could replace Michail Antonio?

Antonio has enjoyed an intriguing West Ham career – with 100 direct goal involvements in 237 Premier League games, and last season's Conference League victory capping his spell in east London. However, with transition for the Hammers, an aging Antonio debatably doesn't strike the same fear he used to, as he netted just five league goals last term.

divin-mubama-michail-antonio-west-ham-premier-league
Adam Hlozek, West Ham United, WHU, Hammers, Premier League

So who could be his replacement at the London Stadium? Well, TEAMtalk has suggested Bayer Leverkusen's Adam Hlozek as an eye-catching heir. An even more imposing figure is cut by VFB Stuttgart's revelation Serhou Guirassy – whose ridiculous 14 goals in just eight Bundesliga games this term has had heads turning all around Europe. Today's focus though, doesn't come from Germany.

Instead rather, we move over the western border to the Netherlands as AZ Alkmaar's Greek forward Vangelis Pavlidis is the latest name to be tipped as a potential successor.

How good is Vangelis Pavlidis?

Ever-improving and ever-prolific since his switch to Eredivisie football in 2019, the 24-year-old has all the makings of a stalwart striker in any of the 'top five' leagues.

The Greek front man at Alkmaar initially got his formative start at VFL Bochum and then BVB Dortmund II, yet Holland was where the 'under the radar' goal rush started when he moved to Willem II on loan (and then permanently) in 2019.

At the Tilburg side, Pavlidis notched a total of 33 goals in 82 games. 28 of those came in 73 Eredivisie outings before he was snatched up by Alkmaar in July 2021.

41 goals in just 67 league games has the 6 foot 1 Greek propelling Alkmaar consistently near the top of the table. This season alone, a jaw-dropping (and improved) 13 goals in nine have helped them fly to second place. West Ham have moved along speculation by going to watch the Greek in his latest headliner performance.

How good could Vangelis Pavlidis be?

Goals are all well and good when underlining a striker's raw ability in front of goal, of course. But what about the more in-depth numbers when compared to similar strikers at his level?

FBref provides a sparkling scouting report of Pavlidis, especially when compared to Porto's Mehdi Teremi, Sporting's Viktor Gyökeres and PSV's Luuk de Jong. When looking over a stat report littered with green – Pavlidis notably brings 0.80 non-penalty goals per 90 (ranking in top 2% among his European peers).

His non-penalty xG is 0.54 per 90, which puts him in the top 6% percentile and even better – combining this with creating for teammates, his npxG + xAG (Assisted Goals) comes in at 0.74 – which lands him in the top 3% percentile.

Near-malleable in nature to his team's attack, it's hard to see a player of his ability not adapt to a greater challenge. Even if he didn't produce goals in the PL in a prospective move to the Irons, 29.57 passes per 90 (top 6%) and 2.75 progressive passes (top 11%) create space and chances for others. Pavlidis could really open the offensive floor for teammates – he causes havoc with 6.96 touches in the opposition area per 90 (top 1%).

The Greek wonder could be a well needed wrecking ball for Moyes' side, ensuring that with Antonio potentially set to be on his way sooner rather than later, the Scotsman can acquire a dream replacement.

Mumbai Indians teetering on the edge of elimination

Form guide (most recent match first)

  • Mumbai Indians: lost to Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets, beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 102 runs, beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 13 runs

  • Kings XI Punjab: lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore by 10 wickets, lost to Kolkata Knight Riders by 31 runs, lost to Rajasthan Royals by 15 runs

Big Picture

Mumbai Indians will be out of the tournament if they lose to Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday, but if they win they will move to fourth place. Their net run rate is 0.405, which is better even than the table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad, because so many of their losses were close. But they cannot avail its advantage if they lose to Kings XI.Considering that, Rohit Sharma may not mind facing a side that is propped on the shoulders of two batsmen. Kings XI’s openers KL Rahul and Chris Gayle are massive threats, especially at a small ground like the Wankhede Stadium, but break through them and there’s not much left. Kings XI desperately need their middle order to step up.Victory for Kings XI will take them to 14 points, but not guarantee a playoff spot just yet. Defeat will make qualification that much tougher because of their net run rate of -0.518 is the worst of all teams.

In the news

Spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman hurt his hand while bowling against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday and missed Kings XI’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. His return could prove quite useful against a deep and power-packed batting line-up.

Previous meeting

Mumbai restricted Kings XI to 176 in Indore – a ground that is possibly more batting-friendly than the Wankhede – and wrapped up the chase with one over to spare. Gayle and Suryakumar Yadav made fifties.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Likely XIs

Mumbai Indians 1 Evin Lewis, 2 Suryakumar Yadav, 3 Rohit Sharma (capt), 4 Ishan Kishan (wk), 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Krunal Pandya, 7 Ben Cutting, 8 JP Duminy/Kieron Pollard, 9 Mitchell McClenaghan, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mayank MarkandeKings XI Punjab 1 KL Rahul (wk), 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Mayank Agarwal, 4 Karun Nair, 5 Aaron Finch, 6 Marcus Stoinis/Mujeeb ur Rahman, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin (capt), 9 Andrew Tye, 10 Mohit Sharma, 11 Ankit Rajpoot

Strategy punt

  • Rohit averages 6.6 and strikes at 88 in the seven matches Mumbai have lost this season. In the five they have won, he has averaged 73 and struck at 155. Basically, Kings XI need to take him out early. And to do that they might try Axar Patel. The head-to-head reads: 18 runs, 25 balls, one wicket.
  • Gayle has scored 217 runs in 151 balls at an average of 72 against all the bowlers Mumbai currently have on their roster. But there is hope: Ben Cutting has dismissed him twice in 17 balls, and Hardik Pandya once in 15 balls. Jasprit Bumrah has also managed to keep him quiet (26 runs in 27 balls). Expect those three to take a decent amount of workload while the Universe Boss is at the crease.

Stats that matter

  • Kings XI began their campaign with five wins in seven matches. Then they went into a seven-day break. Upon returning to action, they lost four out of five games and tumbled from first to fifth place.
  • Kings XI have almost entirely been riding on individual performances. Their two best bowlers Andrew Tye (20 wickets in 12 innings, economy rate 8.02) and Mujeeb (14 wickets in 11 innings, economy rate 6.99) have been outstanding. The others have contributed 29 wickets in 12 innings at an economy rate of 9.3.
  • Gayle has been a monster against legspin this season. He has smashed 79 runs off only 33 balls without ever losing his wicket.
  • Evin Lewis needs 18 runs to get to 3000 in T20s. But he seems to be struggling against fast bowling this IPL season (strike-rate 127, average 21). So Kings XI might look to use Ankit Rajpoot to unsettle the opener. Moreover, Rajpoot concedes only 7.3 an over in the Powerplay and has taken five of his eight wickets in this period.

Fantasy pick

Suryakumar has struck 473 runs in 12 innings this season. That is the second-highest tally by an uncapped batsman in all IPLs, after Shaun Marsh’s 616 in 2008. He’s also grown up playing his cricket at Wankhede stadium, making him a very handy choice.

Tottenham: Johnson Set For Brand New Role At Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur summer signing Brennan Johnson could be set for a new role at Spurs as talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor shares his belief.

Who have Spurs signed?

The summer transfer window saw Spurs bring in seven major signings for new manager Ange Postecoglou, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, striker Alejo Veliz and Johnson signing for the club.

Tottenham have started the new Premier League season in very bright and promising fashion under Postecoglou, most recently thrashing Burnley 5-2 at Turf Moor with an imperious attacking display.

The result took high-flying Spurs to second in the table, just behind last season's treble-winners Man City, as they remain unbeaten with three wins and a draw from their opening four league matches.

ange-postecoglou-spurs

Life without star striker Harry Kane, who joined Bayern Munich in one of the transfers of the summer window, is looking very rosy so far.

Johnson was brought in on deadline day to contribute in replacing Kane's obvious goal threat, and talkSPORT'S Agbonlahor now believes he is set for a brand new role under Postecoglou.

Brazil international striker Richarlison hasn't exactly been prolific for Spurs since his move from Everton in 2022, with Tottenham's new signing coming in to potentially take his place.

Agbonalhor, speaking to Football Insider, claims that while Johnson isn't the finished article just yet, he expects the 22-year-old to do a better job than Richarlison in a "new" central role (as said in the piece's headline).

“I expect he’ll play through the middle and do a better job than Richarlison," said the former Aston Villa striker.

“I do like Johnson, but he’s not a £50million player at the moment.

“His finishing isn’t there at all just yet – we saw that chance he missed against Arsenal on the opening day. He has some other decent attributes. He’s quick – but he’s not a top player.

“It’s a lot of money, unless Postecoglou is convinced he can improve him quickly.”

How good is Brennan Johnson?

Johnson racked up eight goals and three assists in the league alone last term, and while he isn't exactly a goalscorer on the level of Kane, he may well contribute effectively in Postecoglou's fluid, new-look Spurs system.

The Welshman has been praised by those who known him, like former Forest midfielder Chris Cohen, who told BBC Radio Nottingham's Shut up and Show More Football podcast that he thinks Johnson is already a "superstar" player.

"Bren's a superstar, I loved working with Bren," said Cohen.

"From the first day I saw him play football I knew he was going to be a superstar.

"I actually sent him a video the other day of some clips we did for him when he was 18. I was cold calling League 1, League 2 managers to try and get him out on loan because he was too good for our under-23s team.

"I won't say the name of the club but one actually didn't take him on a free because he didn't want to pay the hotel bill for him – now he's gone onto what he's gone onto.

"It's crazy people couldn't see what everyone in the football club could see but he obviously needed a loan too."
