Near-fisticuffs, hackings, underwear shenanigans, broken glass

March had more rubbishy action than a Steven Seagal starrer. And it all ended in tears

Andrew Fidel Fernando05-Apr-2018An avalanche of ineptitude
Just how did Australia wind up in this black hole of ignominy? It took a series of worsening decisions, each more stupid than the last. First there was the lower middle-order collapse, when they lost five wickets for 25 to give South Africa a sizeable lead. Then the resolution to cheat, along with entrusting the cheating to a junior member of the side. This was followed by the stunning failure to cheat successfully, despite being armed with sandpaper – a material specifically designed to change the texture of a hard surface, such as the outside of a cricket ball. Then being caught on camera, pretending at first that only a black cloth was used, then claiming it was sticky tape, before finally the truth was revealed, and sackings, bans and resignations ensued.Australia were like a man who gambled away his savings, tried to rob a bank, forgot to cover his face, got spooked by the surveillance cameras, made a dash for the exit and knocked himself out on the glass door. The heroic appeals to righteousness
In the wake of the sandpaper incident, a surfeit of morally upright columns were produced, especially by portions of the English media, about the dire need for the transformation of an Australian team culture that had become rotten and deplorable and has been given to cheating since at least November, or whenever it was that that 4-0 series began. This is only to be expected. Only months ago, it was parts of the Australian press that righteously petitioned for a change in the wretched and reprehensible England team culture that had seen Ben Stokes cut loose in Bristol. This, in turn, was perhaps a response to the noble entreaties from the British press to Australia to overhaul team culture after Warner took a swing at Joe Root. And let us not forget the sermons about the putrid cultural waters that overturned Andrew Flintoff’s pedalo, the lectures from dizzying moral heights about the team culture that fuelled Shane Warne’s sexcapades, or the debased collective values that filled Micheal Atherton’s pocket full of soil, and on and on through history all the way to 1881 or until you want to shoot yourself.Mind the windows…. and the door
Sixes and broken glass were a theme in March. In the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, both Rovman Powell and Marlon Samuels struck blows of such great length and ferocity that they each broke a window at the Harare Sports Club – Powell while reaching triple figures for the first time in international cricket. In Colombo, a sublime Mahmudullah six to seal a thrilling virtual semi-final against Sri Lanka prompted a celebration so frenzied that the Bangladesh dressing room door was left shattered. In the final, with 34 required off the last two overs, India perhaps felt they needed some glass-shattering emergency big hits of their own.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe surprise success
The Nidahas Trophy, of course, turned out to be much more engrossing than expected, thanks to chasing heroics from Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Dinesh Karthik, in addition to the histrionics in the penultimate match. That the collapsing Bangladesh top order’s frequent comings and goings in the final were made easier by the absence of that dressing-room door is really just the kind of serendipitous closing gag that this tournament deserved.Dave Cameron’s Women’s Day
Last month, CWI head honcho Dave Cameron blamed Jamaican cricket’s decline partly on the recent proliferation of female PE teachers. He has weighed in on women’s issues again this month, tweeting on March 8: “Happy International Women’s Day and while we celebrate lets not forget the men who are fathers and brothers as we need them to have a properly functioning society.”With World Wildlife Day also having been in March, the Briefing would like to take cues from Mr Cameron and pay tribute not only to the rangers who protect parks across the world, but also the poachers who keep the rangers in their jobs. The humdrum hacking
Our sympathies are with Vernon Philander, who was the victim of perhaps the most boring and visionless hack in history this month. Having apparently gone through all the trouble of gaining illicit access to Philander’s Twitter handle, the hacker only proceeded to post a mildly accusatory tweet directed at Steven Smith. He or she had not even the gall to post a picture of Philander’s genitals, as the “hackers” who had “hacked” Ian Botham’s and Kumar Sangakkara’s accounts had once done.Next month on The Briefing:- Unable to agree on the name of which great cricketer from which country should go first on the trophy, CSA and CA just decide to name it the “Stairwell-Sandpaper Cup”.- Kagiso Rabada takes to offering back rubs and homemade cookies to batsmen he has just dismissed, in order to avoid further ICC censure.- The BCB orders hundreds of standby glass doors for Mirpur Stadium in anticipation of Bangladesh victories in the coming season. “That is the level of belief we have in the boys,” says board chief.

Viva o Flu!!!”

Liverpool are keeping multiple options open, even as their primary focus remains on signing Bayer Leverkusen star Wirtz. Their interest in him is longstanding, and the commitment is reflected in the magnitude of their bid — a package reportedly worth up to €130 million (£109m/$148m), which includes both a guaranteed sum and various performance-based add-ons. However, Reds boss Slot also cut short his summer break to personally engage in discussions with Man City target Cherki, as reported by

Cherki, whose contract at Lyon expires next summer, does not have a fixed release clause, contrary to some reports suggesting a €22.5m (£19m/$26m) fee would be sufficient. Lyon are said to be holding out for a significantly higher price, knowing the player’s value and the level of interest he is generating from multiple top clubs.

With Liverpool in pole position to sign Wirtz, this week could prove crucial in determining whether the club lands its marquee target. The Germany international is thought to favour a move to Anfield, and the club’s readiness to meet Leverkusen’s high demands demonstrates how much they want to bring him to Merseyside. Continued dialogue between the two clubs is ongoing, and the Reds are prepared to raise their offer if necessary to get the deal over the line.

Birmingham book home quarter-final despite Afridi's four-wicket over

Birmingham 172 for 8 (Yates 65, Shaheen 4-29, Ball 3-33) beat Nottinghamshire 168 (Moores 73, Hasan 3-25, Lintott 3-27) by two wickets Birmingham Bears booked themselves a home quarter-final in the Vitality Blast with a two-wicket victory over North Group rivals Notts Outlaws at a damp Trent Bridge despite losing four wickets to Pakistan ace Shaheen Shah Afridi in the first over of their innings as they chased 169 to win.The Bears, already sure of a place in the knock-out stages after five straight wins before this, found themselves reeling at seven for four as Shaheen, at 23 already regarded as among the best bowlers in the world in this format, gave away five wides with his first ball but then took wickets with his first, second, fifth and sixth legal deliveries. But, after the Outlaws lost their England quick Olly Stone after bowling just three balls on his comeback from injury, opener Rob Yates put together a calm 65 from 46 balls with five sixes that ultimately proved to be the foundation for a victory completed with five balls to spare with vital runs from Jacob Bethell (27) and Jake Lintott (27 not out) in the middle and later stages of the innings.Despite Tom Moores hitting 73 from 42 balls, the Outlaws always looked to be under par with 168 from their 20 overs, Hasan Ali taking 3 for 25 and Lintott 3 for 27. Afridi’s 4 for 29 and Jake Ball’s 3 for 33 proved in vain and Outlaws need to beat Leicestershire Foxes at Trent Bridge in their final game to join the Bears in the knock-out stages.Asked to bat first after struggling for runs in their last three matches, the Outlaws suffered an early blow as Alex Hales continued his own poor run by chopping on to Henry Brookes for four but Joe Clarke and Lyndon James found some late momentum in the powerplay, James clearing the Larwood and Voce Stand with an enormous six over midwicket off Brookes.Yet from 61 for 1 after six overs they were checked again by the Bears spinners, with both Clarke (26) and Matt Montgomery bowled by Lintott in consecutive overs as the Outlaws reached halfway at 86 for 3.Lintott, the left-arm wrist spinner, picked up his third wicket when James, in his most productive Blast innings to date, cut straight to backward point for 37, but gave Moores a life on 21 when he spilled what should have been an easy boundary catch off Olly Hannon-Dalby.It turned out to be an expensive miss in the context of the innings as the wicket-keeper made the most of that and another slice of luck on 28 when a steepler off Glenn Maxwell dropped safe by hammering sixes off Maxwell, Lintott and Hannon-Dalby twice as 45 were added in the last six overs. But that was against the loss of six wickets as Pakistan international Ali signed off his Bears stint by having Steven Mullaney caught on the fence, trapping Matt Carter leg before and bowling Moores with the last ball of the innings after Maxwell had removed Imad Wasim, leg before, and Afridi via a catch at long-on before Stone was run out as the last three balls of the innings all brought wickets.Any hopes of straightforward night for the Bears seemed to be obliterated in Afridi’s extraordinary first over, which began with five wides but then saw Alex Davies yorked and Chris Benjamin bowled attempting a scoop off the first two legal deliveries, followed by two singles and another two wickets off the final two balls, Dan Mousley falling victim to a stunning one-handed catch by Stone at short cover and Ed Barnard castled first ball by another stunning yorker.More drama followed as Stone, playing in his first Blast match of the season after a long absence with a hamstring injury, had to leave the field after bowling just three balls. Yates began to assert himself with sixes off Carter and Ball but Maxwell bottom-edged into his stumps off Ball and the Bears were 60 for 5.Thanks to Afridi’s heroics, the Bears were three runs behind where they needed to be on the DLS chart when rain brought an interruption with the visitors 76 for 5 after seven, but the break, which in the end cost no overs, game the Bears time to gather their senses and at 101 for 5 after 10, with Yates having completed a 27-ball fifty that included four sixes, they were beginning to look favourites.Bethell was needlessly run out in the 12th over, putting the outcome in the balance again with 51 needed from 50 balls, but as the requirement came down to 34 from the last five overs it was clear that the Outlaws needed to be rid of Yates if they were not to slip to defeat. In the event, they claimed his wicket with the next ball as the left-hander sent a delivery from Ball skywards and Clarke took a fine diving catch at cover as Yates departed for 65. Ball raised home hopes again when he dismissed Ali with two overs left but Henry Brookes hit the winning boundary off Imad in the final over.

La Liga top scorers 2024-25: Kylian Mbappe wins the Pichichi trophy

GOAL brings you this season's top goal scorers in La Liga

Kylian Mbappe has capped off a sensational season by clinching the Pichichi Trophy as La Liga's top marksman—and for the first time in his career, he's also bagged the coveted European Golden Boot.

Known in Spain as the prestigious Pichichi Trophy, this award goes to the league's top marksman each season. In the 2024/25 campaign, it was Artem Dovbyk—then leading the line for Girona and now at Roma—who took top honours, finishing ahead of Jude Bellingham, Robert Lewandowski, and Alexander Sørloth, who has since made the switch to Atletico Madrid.

This time around, it's largely been a two-horse race between Kylian Mbappé and Lewandowski, though Osasuna's Ante Budimir has thrown a real spanner in the works with an eye-catching challenge of his own.

GOAL brings you a fully updated rundown of the leading scorers in La Liga across the 2024-25 season.

  • (C)Getty Images

    1Kylian Mbappe | Real Madrid | 31 goals

Kylian Mbappe lit up LaLiga with 31 goals—four clear of Robert Lewandowski—to etch his name into Real Madrid folklore, becoming the club’s 16th player to claim the iconic Pichichi Trophy. In what’s been a sensational debut season at the Bernabéu, the Frenchman has already racked up 43 goals across all competitions, announcing himself in emphatic fashion on Spanish soil.

  • Getty Images Sport

    2Robert Lewandowski | Barcelona | 27 goals

Few forwards have enjoyed careers as illustrious as Robert Lewandowski, who’s thrived under tactical masterminds like Klopp, Guardiola, and Ancelotti. But it was Hansi Flick who unlocked his most lethal version — none more so than during Bayern’s treble-winning run in 2020–21, where the Pole bagged a mind-blowing 48 goals in all competitions.

Fast forward to 2025, and Flick and Lewy have reunited at Barcelona, rekindling the spark. While the veteran striker exploded out of the gates early in the season, his scoring cooled off slightly down the stretch — leaving him just shy of clinching the European Golden Shoe. Still, the old magic is far from gone.

  • @Osasuna

    3Ante Budimir | Osasuna | 21 goals

Ante Budimir might fly under the radar compared to La Liga's headline-grabbers, but the Osasuna striker delivered one of the league’s most consistent goal returns last season.

The Croatian hitman racked up 21 goals in 38 appearances, finishing with a sharp 0.55 goals per game average. That tally not only made him Osasuna’s go-to man up top, but also saw him finish fifth in the La Liga scoring charts, just two shy of heavyweight names like Robert Lewandowski and Jude Bellingham.

Leading the line as a lone frontman, Budimir proved once again he’s a clinical operator — and a key cog in Jagoba Arrasate's system.

    4Alexander Sørloth | Atletico Madrid | 20 goals

Sørloth has quietly gone about his business this season, but his numbers speak volumes. The Atletico Madrid forward has struck 20 goals in 35 league outings, boasting a tidy 0.57 goals-per-game rate.

Reliable, efficient, and constantly on the scoresheet, the Norwegian hitman has become a dependable presence in Diego Simeone’s setup — offering both a physical edge and a clinical touch in front of goal.
