Tayla Vlaeminck 'feared the worst' with knee injury – Matthew Mott

Australia fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck feared the worst when she suffered a knee injury last month but is making good progress in her recovery ahead of the T20I tri-series with India and England and T20 World Cup.Vlaeminck, 21, picked up an ACL strain to her left knee during training before Christmas and has sat out the resumption of the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) but is now back running. She has a history of bad knee injuries having been through two reconstructions and missed half of last season’s WBBL after suffering a previous ACL strain.”Tayla has been really good, happy with her progress,” Australia coach Matthew Mott told ESPNcricinfo. “It was a big scare at the start, she feared the worst because of her past history. But she did a strain about a year ago that felt similar so the recovery has been pretty good.”Vlaeminck is one of the quickest bowlers in the world and has added a strong point-of-difference to the Australia attack since making her debut in October 2018. She only has four wickets from her six T20Is but her economy rate is under six an over and she has often earned wickets for team-mates by unsettling opposition with her pace. The other major injury-watch around the Australia camp has been Ellyse Perry following the shoulder damage that curtailed her WBBL season after she landed awkwardly when attempting to take a catch against the Melbourne Renegades on November 17.Tayla Vlaeminck troubled Sri Lanka with her pace•Getty Images

Mott was commentating for radio at the time one of his star players went down and admitted to some unease when Perry continued to field during the match. She was keen to return towards the end of the WBBL with the Sydney Sixers trying to qualify for the finals, but a cautious approach was taken and she made her comeback in the WNCL for her new state, Victoria, on Tuesday scoring 24 and taking 1 for 20 from seven overs.”No matter who the player is you worry about the worst-case scenario,” Mott said. “I know she’s always tough, the fact she stayed out on the field was good and bad. It meant it wasn’t too serious. I’ve spoken to her and would have preferred she come straight off and get some treatment. As captain she wanted to influence the Sixers, but the right decision was made [not to rush back].”Australia will name their T20 World Cup squad in the middle of the month and while there won’t be much change from those who have thrashed Sri Lanka and West Indies in the last six matches, Mott and the selection panel will look closely at those who performed well in the WBBL as well as the India A series. Offspinner Molly Strano, who was the leading WBBL wicket-taker, and the Hobart Hurricanes seamer Belinda Vakarewa are two pushing for call-ups.”As a selection group we were very happy with what was thrown up and the competition for spots,” he said. “Someone like Belinda Vakarewa who has been on our radar for a long time, for her to get the opportunity to open the bowling and close out innings, you can’t put a price on that.”Molly Strano who has been in the team and done well and has probably been unluckily squeezed out by some allrounders. Even younger players like Annabel Sutherland doing well in the A series, Erin Burns who probably didn’t really nail it in the WBBL but had a great A series. There are players on the fringes who have given us a tough game for this final 15.”

Wolves in danger of losing a "top talent" who could replace Semedo

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been fantastic this season, despite crashing out of the FA Cup to Championship side Coventry City last time out.

Their main improvement from last season has been their ability to find the back of the net more frequently, scoring 11 more goals than last campaign already.

Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri.

The appointment of Gary O’Neil as manager has certainly played a huge role in getting the side firing again, while even showing the courage to utilise young talent.

However, away from the club, the Wanderers also have an extremely talented prospect thriving who has the potential to replace Nelson Semedo.

Nelson Semedo’s 2023/24 campaign in numbers

Since joining Wolves in 2020 from Barcelona in a huge £36.8m deal, Semedo has been the first-choice right back under every manager, making 136 appearances for the Wanderers.

This season under O’Neil, the speedy fullback has started 27 Premier League games, making 2.3 tackles per game and helping his side to four clean sheets.

Nelson Semedo

However, despite playing as an attacking wingback who’s tasked with providing support in the final third, the Portuguese ace has failed to score all season and only registered one assist.

Unlike the 30-year-old, a current Wolves loanee who’s been on fire in Switzerland this season could just be an upgrade on Semedo, especially considering the former Porto man is the club’s second-highest earner at £80k-per-week.

In July 2021, Wolves signed 21-year-old right-back Bendeguz Bolla from Hungarian top-flight side Fehervar FC in a deal worth £800k.

The defender was instantly sent on loan to Swiss side Grasshoppers following his move to England, where he played 66 games, scoring six times and registering seven assists.

In the summer, Bolla was tipped to return to Wolves and play a role to some degree this season, with journalist Bence Bocsak labelling the 24-year-old a “top talent.”

Instead, the childhood friend of Dominik Szoboszlai was sent back to Switzerland, this time joining UEFA Europa League side Servette on a season-long loan with the option to buy, and based on his performances this season, Wolves are now in danger of losing a potential Semedo upgrade who has not played a single minute for Wolves since joining.

As you can see, Bolla’s recent performance against Stade Ls Ouchy in the Swiss Super League shows what he has the ability to produce, even beating Semedo’s Premier League goal contribution tally in one game.

The versatile defender can play on either flank as a full-back or a midfielder, but he is best suited to a wing-back role, which allows him to score goals, create, and help out defensively.

In 33 games across all competitions this season, the Hungary international has picked up ten goal contributions, five goals, and five assists, which is obviously far superior to O’Neil’s current first-choice wing-back.

Overall, if Bolla continues to perform between now and the end of the season, Wolves will most definitely want to hand him a chance in pre-season, but given he’s now found his feet at Servette – and with the loan club possessing that option to buy – he may want to continue his development away from the Wanderers.

Harry Kane absolved of blame for Euro 2024 struggles as Graeme Souness points the finger at another area of England's team

Liverpool icon Graeme Souness believes Harry Kane did not get enough service for England during the Euros and that their midfield was the big issue.

England lose to Spain in Euros finalKane defended despite underperformingSouness blames Three Lions' midfieldWHAT HAPPENED?

Despite being joint-top scorer at Euro 2024 with three goals, Bayern Munich star Kane came in for criticism for his England displays at the tournament. The striker was taken off around the hour mark in the 2-1 final loss to Spain after a quiet performance, with many questioning whether the 30-year-old should be in the Three Lions' starting XI going forward. However, Souness has come to the aid of the ex-Tottenham man and turned his ire towards England's midfield – which comprised Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Kobbie Mainoo.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT GRAEME SOUNESS SAID

He said on: “If a conversation had taken place between Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane where he dropped Kane because he felt he was underperforming, then I think Harry would’ve agreed with him. However, Kane was not the same player that he’s been for a number of years where he has been the go-to man.

“If I were him I’d be pointing to the fact that he doesn’t get enough service. No one passes to him, he comes short for the ball and doesn’t receive it. The England midfield is non-existent and they were non-existent in the final against Spain. He’s struggled because of that just as much as he’s struggled because of any lack of form or fitness.

"He was getting no service whatsoever. He was getting bullied off the ball because it wasn’t being given to him quick enough. I have sympathy for him."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

For the second Euros running, England fell at the final hurdle. After losing to Italy on penalties at Wembley in 2021, they were undone by Spain in Germany at the weekend. With Gareth Southgate resigning as manager, a new Three Lions era is about to begin as they search for their first international trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

Decision made: £250,000-a-week Man Utd player will leave Old Trafford

A Manchester United player currently earning £250,000 per week looks set to leave the club this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man Utd transfer news

Erik ten Hag's side suffered a hugely disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Fulham on Saturday, in what was a major blow to their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

It was a reminder that United's improved recent form shouldn't hide the fact that plenty of new signings are needed this summer, with the club continuing to be linked with additions.

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has been backed to move to Old Trafford at the end of the season, having previously shone in England with Coventry City.

A move for Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior has also been mooted, in what could be one of the most exciting signings the club have made in years. It remains to be seen if he will leave the Santiago Bernabeu, but the arrival of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain could possibly affect his role in the club.

There will also be dead wood that United are keen to dispose of in the summer, however, and a big update has arrived regarding the future of a player who could fall into that bracket.

Anthony Martial to leave Man Utd

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have decided not to retain Anthony Martial's services beyond this summer, not seeing a future for him at the club, and he may have played his last match for them because of a current injury absence.

"Man United will allow Anthony Martial to leave at the end of the season when his contract expires and could already have played his last game for the club, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed that the board have decided to let the Frenchman depart for free having reportedly opted not to trigger a one-year extension on his deal.

"Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that the Red Devils are eager to significantly reduce their hefty wage bill – a major influence on their decision regarding Martial."

This summer has to see Martial's time as a United player reach its conclusion, with the £250,000-a-week attacker an injury-prone figure who hasn't offered enough for some time now. This season, he has only started five games in the Premier League, and while the fitness issues aren't his fault, having a high-earning player around who is rarely available makes no sense.

At 28, Martial is also not getting any younger, and with his current deal expiring at the end of the season, it makes absolutely no sense to offer him an extension.

Instead, getting him off the wage bill will free up funds for new signings, and the hope is that United snap up a younger, more available player such as Gyokeres, who has scored 16 goals and chipped in with eight assists in the Primeira Liga this season.

CSA declares R200 million loss for 2018-19

In the previous financial year, CSA recorded profits of R350 million after Australia and India visited, resulting in much larger revenues

Cricket South Africa has declared a loss of Rand 200 million (US$13.5 million approx) for the 2018-19 financial year after their AGM in Johannesburg on Saturday.CSA’s approved financial statements, published in their integrated report for 2019, detailed the losses, which, incidentally, marked an improvement on the budgeted losses of R222 million ($15 million approx). CSA put the improved result down to cost-cutting initiatives, as well as increased investment returns. The board’s total revenue for the year was R929 million ($63 million approx) down from R1.5 billion ($101 million approx) over the previous year.CSA’s financial statements showed that the organisation still has a cash balance of R349 million ($23.5 million approx), as well as reserves of more than R850 million ($57.5 million approx). The chair of CSA’s finance committee, Iqbal Khan, also revealed that plans had been put in place that had reduced the previously projected deficit of R654 million ($44 million approx) over the next four years down to R120 million ($8 million approx).”There are those CSA bashers who peddle the narrative that we are bankrupt, but our only crime is that we were transparent and honest,” CSA president Chris Nenzani said in his address at the AGM. “We did our own sustainability analysis, which showed us that if we did not do anything, there would be a R654 million hole. We said that, we raised the alarm, whatever the populist narrative says.”In the context of the four-year financial cycle on which CSA operates, in the previous financial year, CSA recorded profits of R350 million ($24 million approx). Prior to that, there were losses of R158 million ($11 million approx), while in 2015-16, there were profits of R107 million ($7 million approx).Much depends on the incoming tours: last season, South Africa hosted Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, all three of which were loss-making tours. The previous season, Australia and India visited, resulting in much larger profits. The England and Australia men’s teams will be visiting South Africa in the coming season.Nenzani also broached the subject of the recent restructuring exercises in CSA’s administration. He said that the chief executive, Thabang Moroe, had been given greater responsibility, rather than greater power.”Our board decisions have always been taken unanimously or by consensus and there is also a healthy relationship between the board and the senior management,” Nenzani said. “The board has given the senior management and specifically our chief executive more responsibility, not power, and with that comes an escalated level of responsibility. The CEO remains accountable to the board and we will hold him to that.”Nenzani also focused on South Africa’s performance at the men’s World Cup, calling it “a monumental failure”, and the reason behind the board’s decision to introduce a new team structure. It was also confirmed at the AGM that Nenzani would serve an extra year as CSA’s president. Board vice-president Beresford Williams suggested that the extension was necessary to keep CSA on a stable footing as the organisation restructured.”The board and the members’ council agreed that we would ask Chris to stay on because there are a number of changes about our cricket at the moment, we’re looking at our whole model and making fundamental changes, and we felt we needed him to share his expertise and wisdom,” Williams said. “It was a unanimous decision. We are fully confident in the leadership we have, they have led well and the results and outcomes have been pretty good.”As well as being CSA president, Nenzani is on the ICC’s board of directors and is chairman of the future tours programme and finance committee.

  • Around £50m for signings this summer
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite being retained as the club's manager, the Dutch tactician will have to navigate the transfer market with just £50 million ($64.20m) to spend initially, a stark contrast to the expectations and needs of the squad, according to the Moreover, with chief executive Omar Berrada set to begin in his role in the middle of next month, and sporting director Dan Ashworth joining the team later, the hierarchical dynamics have shifted, with Ten Hag's focus now more on coaching rather than recruitment – effectively reducing his influence on transfer decisions.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With only £50m available for new signings, United must look to player sales to boost their transfer budget and comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial have already departed the club, with others expected to follow. The club is prepared to listen to offers for most of the squad, including notable names like Antony, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. These sales could be crucial for generating the necessary funds to bring in new talent. They are also open to offers for homegrown talents like Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, whose departures would contribute entirely to the FFP balance sheet.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

One of the primary targets for United is strengthening the defence. The club have several centre-backs on the shortlist, including Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice, Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, and Leny Yoro from Lille. However, acquiring any of these players would consume a significant portion of their budget. Additionally, they are interested in Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee to provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund. However, without significant player sales, securing these transfers will be challenging.

    WHAT NEXT?

The uncertainty surrounding the squad and the financial limitations place Ten Hag in a difficult position. The current situation necessitates a strategic approach to player sales and acquisitions and the blueprint will be set by Berrada and Ashworth once they are in office at Old Trafford. Ten Hag could only hope that he gets a revamped squad at his disposal in August so that he can fight for silverware on multiple fronts.

Spurs eyeing move for £100m "monster" who could surpass Romero

Tottenham Hotspur can rest assured that chairman Daniel Levy has made good on his promise to Ange Postecoglou to strengthen the ranks, welcoming Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner to the fold.

A stunning start to affairs under their new manager this term placed Spurs in untimely title contention but a lack of depth, laid bare in November following a deluge of injuries and suspensions, pulled the club away from the forefront of the Premier League.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

Now fighting for a spot back in the top four, fifth-placed Tottenham have indeed made requisite improvements this month, and while a midfielder is still pursued, Postecoglou has shifted partial attention to the summer transfer window.

Spurs search for another defender

Dragusin joined from Genoa in a £27m package a few weeks ago but Eric Dier was sold to Bayern Munich and Tottenham would welcome another centre-back to fortify the backline for years to come.

As such, reports have filtered through concerning Postecoglou's growing interest in Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite, with 90min now revealing that the London club could make their move in the summer.

The report claims that Spurs are considering a swoop for the towering titan, who they have a concrete interest in, but will only make their move at the end of the season, rather than this window.

Valued at a staggering £100m by the Toffees, Branthwaite has been immense this season and thus attracted attention from top outfits such as Real Madrid, so Spurs have their work cut out in convincing the 21-year-old gem to join their project.

Jarrad Branthwaite could surpass Cristian Romero

A colossus at 6 foot 5, Branthwaite honed his craft on loan with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven last season before returning to Merseyside in the summer to aid Sean Dyche's attempt to restore Everton's verve.

And while Branthwaite was an unused substitute across both of Everton's opening top-flight fixtures of the campaign, he has since started 18 of the 19 fixtures (missing one match due to suspension) and been hailed as a "revelation" by journalist Suleyman Ozturk.

As per Sofascore, Branthwaite has averaged 2.1 tackles, 6.4 ball recoveries, and 4.7 clearances per game in the league this term and has also come out on top in 67% of his contested duels, lauded as a “monster” defender by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

With elite performances denoting his potential to bloom into one of the Premier League's finest defenders, Branthwaite would be a stunning capture down N17 and could even come to surpass Cristian Romero in the Tottenham rearguard.

jake-o'brien-jarrad-branthwaite-everton-opinion

The Argentinian ace has risen to the fore in the English capital since signing from Serie A competitors Atalanta for £42m back in 2021, praised as "best defender in the world" by compatriot Lionel Messi last year.

As per FBref, Romero ranks among the top 11% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 12% for shot-creating actions, the top 13% for pass completion and passes attempted, and the top 5% for tackles per 90.

Clearly, he is a pretty decent member of Postecoglou's backline and, reckless streak notwithstanding, has almost been infallible in his duties this term, vital in Tottenham's resurgence.

The 26-year-old's Achilles heel comes in the form of his aggression, both a blessing and a curse, and with no assurances that he will avoid the violent glare of the red card, signing a rising titan in Branthwaite could be the difference-maker in the fight for silverware over the coming years.

Ange could end Richarlison's Spurs career with late January move

Ange Postecoglou would make a stunning statement by completing this transfer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 26, 2024

Branthwaite already ranks among the top 15% of positional peers for tackles and the top 14% for interceptions per 90 and has only conceded 28 Premier League goals this season – three fewer than the Lilywhites, which suggests that he could play a part in improving the club's defensive record.

Postecoglou would sign a true world-beater in the making in Branthwaite, and given his meteoric rise since returning to his parent club in the summer, the facilities and project at Tottenham could guide him closer still to the apex of the game, cementing his stature as one of Europe's finest.

Therefore, he could surpass Romero, who is four years older, in North London with more experience and development to come his way further down the line over the years to come.

Rahul and Karthik in, Pant and Rayudu out of India's World Cup squad

Ravindra Jadeja has been picked as a third spinning option over a fourth fast bowler

Nagraj Gollapudi15-Apr-20191:20

‘Dinesh Karthik can finish matches under pressure’ – MSK Prasad

There was no place for Rishabh Pant or Ambati Rayudu in India’s 15-man World Cup squad, but KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, Vijay Shankar and Ravindra Jadeja got the selectors’ nod.The meeting to pick the team took place in Mumbai on Monday and was attended by India captain Virat Kohli and the five-man selection panel led by MSK Prasad. The squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma (vice capt), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami.Who will be the No. 4?For the past few months, both Kohli and Prasad had stressed that the World Cup squad was virtually “sorted” barring one spot: The No. 4 spot in the batting order. India have tried as many as 11 batsmen in that position since the 2017 Champions Trophy held in England.Kohli wants a No. 4 batsman with both the skill and temperament to inject momentum into the innings, especially if India are setting a target. Ambati Rayudu, Pant, Vijay and Karthik emerged as the main contenders for the spot and the selectors have now shortlisted Vijay, Karthik, Kedar Jadhav and if need be Rahul to perform that important role.”After that Champions Trophy [in 2017] we have tried quite a few middle-order batsmen, which also includes Dinesh Karthik; we also tried Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey. We did give a few more chances to Rayudu, but what Vijay Shankar offers is three dimensions. Apart from his batting, he can bowl; if the conditions are suitable, overcast, which we might encounter in England, he might bowl a bit and he’s a fantastic fielder. That’s the thing that went in favour of Vijay Shankar.”We are looking at him at No. 4 to begin with. With Dinesh Karthik in and also Kedar Jadhav in, we have plenty of options at that No. 4 right now.”India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma had also put forward MS Dhoni’s name at No. 4, although he insisted it was a “personal” choice. Prasad said that they had looked at all options in the meeting and the unanimous decision was to stick with Shankar at No. 4, at least at the start of the World Cup.”It (Dhoni at No. 4) was discussed,” Prasad said. “But I don’t think that was the point. The point discussed is that Vijay Shankar will bat at No. 4 and so can Kedar Jadhav and we also have a role for KL [Rahul] somewhere.” Prasad clarified that Rahul would be the third opener and will only be brought into the middle order if all other options failed.Karthik v PantWhy Karthik and not Pant was a question directed at Prasad more than once at the media briefing. And Prasad explained that though Pant was “almost there”, the selectors had more faith in Karthik handling the pressure of “crunch” matches.”It’s definitely a case where we have debated at length and all of us in unison felt that either Rishabh Pant or DK [Karthik] will only come into the playing XI if Mahi [Dhoni] is injured. If it is a crucial match, like a quarter-final or a semi-final or like an important game, wicketkeeping also matters. So that’s the only reason that we went ahead with Dinesh Karthik. Otherwise Rishabh Pant was almost there.”However, the biggest factor that worked against Pant was his struggle in finishing games for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2019; something that had also happened in final ODI against Australia in March, when he walked in to bat early with India chasing 273, but fell for a run-a-ball 16.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“That is exactly what we have discussed,” Prasad said. “Under pressure, we have seen Dinesh Karthik finishing matches. That’s one reason that scored for him.”Despite his promise as a hard-hitting batsman, Pant’s wicketkeeping has not convinced everybody – including Prasad. “You can say that, you can say that, but the situation that was discussed among the selection committee is one of them will play in the XI provided MS [Dhoni] is injured. So under such situations, in crunch matches, who is the best guy who can handle the pressure? That is the reason that we went in favour of Dinesh Karthik. Otherwise Pant is full of talent. We have a lot of time for him. It is just unfortunate that he has missed out.”Three spinners against fourth specialist fast bowlerThe defending champions Australia announced their World Cup squad on the same day as India and they picked as many as five fast bowlers. India though have settled for only three – Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami. It appears that the fourth seamer’s spot has gone to Jadeja, who has been included in case the wristspinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal suffer drops in form, which can happen in a tournament like the World Cup where each team plays nine games during the league phase alone.”In the last one-and-a-half years, these two wristspinners who have won us games,” Prasad said. “But there might be a situation where you might require an additional allrounder in the playing XI, which Jadeja brings in. In the second part of the tournament, where the wickets may be a bit more dry, that is where we felt Jadeja will come in handy. That’s the reason why he’s been picked.”Also, the selectors believe that with four allrounders in the squad – including Hardik Pandya and Vijay, who bowl seam up – India can often field an XI with as many as seven strong bowling options. Also, a BCCI press release said four additional quicks – Navdeep Saini, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed and Deepak Chahar – will be traveling to the UK “to assist the Indian team in their World Cup preparation” and they could well be on standby in case of any problems to the three frontline quicks.
