Everton struck gold selling flop who’s now worth less than Keane

Everton have had their fair share of poor dealings in the transfer market, with the club wasting a lot of money on players who clearly aren't up to the standard of the Premier League.

The club signed players such as Moise Kean and Yannick Bolasie, with the duo failing to make any sort of positive impact at Goodison Park before leaving either for free or for a loss on what they paid.

Moise Kean

The arrival of Bolasie in particular is one of the reasons the club have found themselves in trouble with the Premier League for their FFP and PSR breaches, with the club forking out £25m on the attacker before allowing him to leave for nothing.

However, the club also invested a hefty fee in another player, with the club doing well to offload him when they did, given his lack of impact at the club.

Davy Klaassen's stats at Everton

After joining for a fee of £23.6m from Ajax back in the summer of 2017, attacking midfielder Davy Klaassen arrived at Goodison Park with a lot of excitement after his 14-goal season in the Eredivisie.

However, he failed to make a positive impact during his time on Merseyside, with the midfielder failing to score a single goal during the 2017/18 campaign.

Klaassen also only made 17 appearances during his one season at Goodison, with the Dutch international failing to live up to the expectations he came with.

He subsequently departed the Toffees in July 2018, to German side Werder Bremen for a fee in the region of £12m, with the club making a loss of £11.6m in less than a year.

Klaassen has gone on to find his feet once again all over Europe, with the midfielder racking up 54 goals and 26 assists since departing Goodison nearly six years ago.

Despite his brilliant return with goals and assists, his market value has rapidly decreased, with Klaassen now worth less than another Everton flop.

Davy Klaassen's market value in 2024

The 31-year-old may have produced a solid return in recent years, but he has struggled this campaign with Italian giants Inter Milan, registering no goals and no assists in his 16 outings for the club, with the Dutchman mainly used as an impact player off the bench.

As a result, he's seen his value plummet, with Klaassen now only valued at £4.2m, as per Transfermarkt, with his value lower than that of current Everton flop Michael Keane, who is currently worth £6m.

davy-klaassen-everton-transfer-ajax-ronald-koeman-waste-werder-bremen

Klaassen, who was described as "awful" by one Ajax source on Twitter, certainly has struggled when plying his trade in one of Europe's top five leagues, as demonstrated by his stints in the Premier League and Serie A with Everton and Inter Milan, respectively.

The Dutch midfielder certainly hasn't had the career he was once expected to given his brilliant form for Ajax before his big-money move to England, with the Toffees making the right decision to cash in on the 31-year-old back in the summer of 2018.

Pakistan 'struggling in every department' in T20Is – Misbah-ul-Haq

Over-dependence on Babar Azam a big reason for batting failures against Sri Lanka, says the head coach

Umar Farooq08-Oct-2019Misbah-ul-Haq cited deficiencies in practically all departments of the Pakistan T20I outfit following their back-to-back defeats to a second-string Sri Lanka side in Lahore, but defended the decision to bring back Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal.Over the last two years, Pakistan have won 21 of out the 28 T20Is and lost seven, five of which have come in the last nine months. “Losing is never good, especially against a team that is without their major players, and it’s an eye-opener,” Misbah, the team’s head coach and chief selector, said in the post-match press conference. “We can see deficiency in every department: bowling, batting and particularly the way we got out against spin, and also our death bowling.”There was a clear difference between the two teams. Despite being inexperienced, they were disciplined and did everything right, while we completely failed to implement our plan.”ALSO READ: T20I cricket comes to Lahore, but it’s not the same Pakistan as on TVWith Shehzad and Umar coming back, Pakistan experimented with their top order, dropping Fakhar Zaman for the first T20I and opening with Babar Azam and Shehzad, and Umar at No. 3. The three, however, fell within 4.2 overs, leaving Pakistan reeling at 22 for 3 in the 165-run chase, which they eventually lost by 64 runs. Fakhar came back as an opener for the second T20I, pushing Shehzad to No. 3 and Umar to No. 5. Their highest run-scorer of the first T20I, Ifthikar Ahmed, was left out altogether. This experiment failed too, with Pakistan losing their top five for 52 in a chase of 182 before they went on to lose by 35 runs.Since his debut in September 2016, Babar – the No. 1 T20I batsman – has scored 1263 runs in 32 innings at a stellar average of 50.52 and a strike rate of 127.96, and nearly 70% of his 831 runs in the last two years have come in wins. Babar and Fakhar’s opening partnership has also been pivotal for Pakistan’s success, but Babar’s failure at the top in the two T20Is against Sri Lanka has left Pakistan in a fix, exposing the top order’s struggle especially during a chase.

Obviously I am answerable but to build up a team you need to do some experiments to get the answers. We need to show some patience and wait for next series to find answersMisbah-ul-Haq

“There are a lot of reasons for this experimentation,” Misbah said. “Yes, we are the No. 1 team in the world but mostly our strength has been standing on Babar Azam scoring runs and with him not scoring in two games, we are exposed badly. We need to find out six or more match-winners, we need to have more dependable batsmen, we need powerhouses in the top and middle, and in bowling we need to take wickets upfront and in the death overs and we need to have good finishers.”But we failed overall, we are struggling in every department, and it’s a big eye-opener for us. We didn’t play to our strengths and couldn’t deliver. We are looking for more batsmen rather than just relying on one or two.”The recalls of Shehzad and Umar had come in for criticism from various sections – Shehzad has scored 4 and 13 in the two games, while Umar has been dismissed for golden ducks both times – but Misbah stood by the decision to recall them and stressed on the need to experiment.”Both these players have performed well wherever they’ve played in the last one year. Ahmed’s performance in PSL was remarkable enough for a chance, while Umar, whichever format he played, was among the good ones [batsmen],” Misbah said. “It’s unfortunate [that] in our circuit, there is no other batsman in T20s who had performed better than them. Players who have performed in domestic surely deserve a chance, and that’s why we offered them.”If they weren’t able to perform what can be done? Obviously I am answerable, but to build up a team you need to do some experiments to get the answers. When you play someone in international cricket with a couple of games, you understand the utility of a player. We need to show some patience and wait for the next series to find answers.”

Everton now eyeing move for hugely in-demand versatile wing-back

Fresh from the news that their points deduction has been reduced to six from the initial ten, Everton have reportedly turned their attention towards summer targets to reinforce Sean Dyche's side.

Everton transfer news

Everton confirmed the positive outcome of their appeal, saying in an official statement: "Everton can confirm an Appeal Board has concluded that the points deduction imposed by an independent Premier League Commission in November be reduced from ten points to six points, with immediate effect. While the Club is still digesting the Appeal Board’s decision, we are satisfied our appeal has resulted in a reduction in the points sanction.

"We understand the Appeal Board considered the 10-point deduction originally imposed to be inappropriate when assessed against the available benchmarks of which the Club made the Commission aware, including the position under the relevant EFL regulations, and the 9-point deduction that is imposed under the Premier League’s own rules in the event of insolvency."

Whilst the Toffees are still waiting on the outcome of their second Financial Fair Play charge, they're now five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone and, for now, in a position to think about summer targets.

That said, according to Udinese Blog, Everton are among the clubs eyeing a move to sign Festy Ebosele, who can play anywhere up the right flank. Club chiefs at Goodison Park reportedly rate the Udinese wide man highly and have joined the race for his signature alongside Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, Watford and West Ham United.

It remains to be seen just how much Udinese will demand for Ebosele this summer, but with so many clubs interested they are certainly in a strong position. Everton, potentially fresh from Premier League survival, will hope to become the next benefactors to the 21-year-old's talent.

"Strong" Ebosele could make England return

Having previously played for Derby, before joining Udinese on a free deal in the summer of 2022, Ebosele could get his return to English football just two years after departing this summer. The fact that, in the space of just two years, the Irishman could go from Championship action at Pride Park all the way to the Premier League highlights just how impressive he has been in Serie A with Udinese.

Former Derby teammate Craig Forsyth knew all about Ebosele's talents from the very start too, singing his praises via the club's official YouTube channel: "He's been getting better and better and that's the thing. It's good to see him improving with that final ball.

"Still he can get better, there was a lot of opportunities tonight. He's a threat and he's horrible to play against. He's so strong and he's so quick and he can go both ways. He's a nightmare for a defender."

With plenty of time to get even better at just 21-years-old, Ebosele could make an instant impact in the Premier League, whether that be at Everton, Spurs or elsewhere this summer. If the Toffees stay up this season, Dyche will hope to see a number of reinforcements arrive, including the Udinese starlet.

"Huge fees" – Journalist says two Everton stars could leave Goodison Park

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has dropped a double Everton exit update ahead of the summer transfer window, with "huge fees" potentially seeing them leave.

Everton transfer news

The Blues continue to battle for their survival in the Premier League this season, with Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Manchester City a predictable result, but still another loss that doesn't help their current situation. They are still one point adrift of safety, sitting 18th in the table, so there is understandable concern.

Should Everton head to the Championship for the first time this summer, it is clear that a number of key players could move on, possibly refusing to ply their trade in the second tier of English football. The likes of Jordan Pickford, Jarrad Branthwaite, Amadou Onana and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are just a few examples, and it would be hard to begrudge them a move away.

On the flip side, incoming transfer business could be expected, regardless of whether Everton have been relegated or not, and they have been linked with a move for Brighton midfielder Jakub Moder, ultimately missing out on signing him during the January window. Their interest could potentially return at the end of the season, however, so it could be one to watch.

Onana and Branthwaite could leave Everton

According to a fresh update from Football Insider's O'Rourke, Everton could sell both Onana and Branthwaite for "huge fees" this summer.

"Everton duo Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite are in line to be sold in the summer, sources have told Football Insider. The Toffees need to raise funds amid their financial woes, and the pair have emerged as the obvious candidates for the club to sell. The club remain in financial turmoil amid their fight to remain in the Premier League, their pending takeover by 777 Partners and their 10-point deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability rules in November.

"Both Branthwaite and Onana have been the subject of widespread interest in recent months following their standout displays this season and are expected to fetch “huge fees”, sources say."

Losing both Onana and Branthwaite would be a massive blow for Everton, considering they are not only among the most important players at the club currently, but also youngsters who could only get better in the coming years.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

It is easy to see their heads being turned by switches over better teams, sadly, and as mentioned, if Sean Dyche's side fail to beat the drop come May, it is impossible to see either staying put.

Onana has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, the Magpies are reportedly in pole position to seal a £60m move for him, while Branthwaite is thought to be a big target for Manchester United, with the Red Devils seeing him as a long-term option at the heart of their defence. One report has even claimed that Everton could want as much as £75m for his signature.

The only positive would be the "huge fees" that O'Rourke mentions, with Everton understandably demanding big money for two of their prized assets, meaning the club could use the funds to rebuild their squad, hopefully seeing it pay off for the better in the long run.

Blow for Everton with "very good" player set to miss next two games

There’s a growing list of injuries at Goodison Park.

All this does is highlight the Blues' current financial plight, however, and in an ideal world, they wouldn't have to entertain the idea of selling two stars.

After a successful campaign with the Red Dragons, the midfielder is considering returning to the international arena. He recently hinted he could make a U-turn on his decision just months after announcing his retirement.

WHAT JAMES MCCLEAN SAID

Speaking on , the player said, "If that call comes I’ll have a better answer in my mind. A little bit. At the time I didn’t want it to take away from the occasion. Look, I don’t want to sound spoiled. I had my family there. Most people don’t get to sign off on their terms. But I had between November and March to think. And I think: ‘did I take the easy way out because I got to sign off on my terms?’ But while you’re still playing, you’re always thinking that you can still contribute. Maybe I’ve done that too soon. But until that call comes… I’ll know then. I haven’t come so far."

Everton must act fast in race for Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton

Everton are interested in signing an exciting young player with "Champions League level" quality on the ball, according to a fresh transfer update, but they are falling behind in the race.

Everton transfer news

The Blues have an important month ahead of them, not only in terms of further pulling away from the Premier League relegation zone, but also when it comes to completing new signings. Sean Dyche will surely be eyeing up reinforcements between now and the end of the January transfer window, and plenty of players have been name-checked as financially viable additions.

That includes Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill, who the Everton manager worked with for a long time at Turf Moor, and a loan move has been mooted. Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri has also emerged as a temporary option in the middle of the park, with the Blues battling it out with Sevilla to get their man.

Talleres winger Ramon Sosa is a more unknown player who has been linked with a switch to Goodison Park, too, so the club certainly appear to be looking at adding some youth to their ranks.

Everton fall behind Spurs in Adam Wharton race

According to a new update from Football Insider, Everton are interested in signing Blackburn Rovers youngster Adam Wharton, but Tottenham and Crystal Palace are also firmly in the mix, and Kevin Thelwell will need to act fast as the north London outfit are "stepping up" their interest.

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton.

"Tottenham are stepping up their interest in Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton, sources have told Football Insider. Spurs scouts have regularly watched the 19-year-old in action – with Everton and Crystal Palace also keen on the highly-rated, top young player.

"A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Tottenham recruitment chiefs feel Wharton is a potential star in the making."

Wharton looks like a player of enormous potential, already becoming an undoubted key player for Blackburn and starting 20 Championship games for them this season. In that time, the 19-year-old has assisted three times and chipped in with one goal, and he has also averaged 2.3 tackles per game. The young Englishman has had praise heaped on him by Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, too, who has said of his talented midfielder:

"Adam, on the ball, he has a Champions League level. I've been a Champions League player myself, I've coached in the Champions League so I know what you need."

This says so much about the long-term potential that Wharton possesses, and if Everton could beat others to his signature this month, it would represent a hugely exciting piece of business.

The Blackburn ace is still maturing as a player, so it would be unfair to expect him to come straight in as a superstar for the Blues, but the quality he is already performing with at a good standard suggests he could become a fixture in Dyche's team in a relatively short space of time.

Wharton only signed a new deal at Ewood Park last month, keeping him there until the summer of 2028, so a hefty bid may be required to prise him away. He could be worth every penny, though, should he keep developing at his current rate.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Casemiro made the sensational move from Real Madrid to Manchester United in 2022 for a reported fee of €70 million (£60.3m/$75.4m). The Brazilian had a decent first season with the Red Devils as they finished third in the Premier League ahead of the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle United. However, this season, the 32-year-old midfielder has been exposed a number of times. However, Rivaldo believes that his form is not his fault. However, the Brazilian legend did accuse the five-time Champions League winner of following the money to Man Utd.

    WHAT RIVALDO SAID

Speaking to Betting.Betfair.com, Rivaldo said: "Casemiro is a great person, a friend of mine and someone I played with when I was at Sao Paulo. He had an amazing career at Real Madrid. In my opinion, it was the wrong decision for him to leave Real Madrid for Manchester United.

"I think he was living a beautiful story at Real Madrid, but of course, the financial side of things helped his decision.

"Manchester United are in a terrible moment, with so many injuries and Casemiro is a midfield player, not a striker or defender, so people criticise him playing out of position, but in my opinion, he is not to blame at all, because Manchester United are struggling massively on their own."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Casemiro is reportedly on his way out this summer with the Red Devils wanting to cut their losses as soon as possible. Chief selector Trevor Hohns wants to stay on post-Chappell

Australia’s selectors have been under pressure this season but it’s understood Hohns wants to continued until at least 2020

Australia’s chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns has no intention of following the soon-to-retire Greg Chappell out the door at Cricket Australia, wanting to see the role through to at least 2020 even as the governing body looks to appoint a new head of team performance and considers revising the selection structure. In the wake of Chappell’s decision, revealed by ESPNcricinfo, to exit his dual roles of selector and national talent manager when his current contract expires at the end of this year’s Ashes series, it is understood that the 65-year-old Hohns is eager to continue in a role he has held since 2016, his second stint as chairman of the panel after also doing the job from 1996 to 2006.The decisions of a selection panel comprising Hohns, Chappell and coach Justin Langer have been met with plenty of criticism this summer, far from a new thing for selectors to cope with. However, these critiques have taken place against a backdrop of debate over whether or not team performance is best served by the current selection model, and also whether younger minds, with first-hand experience of the T20 age, should be making selection decisions alongside deeper use of analytics.CA had already pared back the panel by one last year, as Mark Waugh resigned and was not replaced, leaving T20 selections solely in the hands of Langer while Hohns and Chappell continued to share deliberations over the Test and ODI teams, plus under-age, national performance and Australia A squads. The former team performance manager Pat Howard was never entirely wedded to the concept of a selection panel, and it will most likely be left up to his full-time replacement – Belinda Clark is serving as an interim – to help CA decide on the best way forward.Numerous luminaries have been connected to more substantial roles around Australian team performance, including Ricky Ponting, Simon Katich and Michael Hussey – all of whom are close to Langer. However, another strong contender is the Western Australia had of team performance Ben Oliver, who has enjoyed a varied career in cricket administration with WA, CA and also the ICC, having earlier player first-class cricket for Victoria. On the final day of the Canberra Test, Chappell discussed his reasons for flagging his intention to retire, and also the philosophy behind his choices in selecting teams. “I’m really starting to find the time away from home a bit of a struggle,” Chappell told Fox Cricket. I’ve really enjoyed my various roles in cricket, not least playing, but coaching, administering and the selecting has been a great challenge. After a cycle, after a World Cup, after an Ashes series, let someone else have a go.”Many players, coaches and observers of the game have at times wondered at the thinking behind Australia’s selections, and Chappell gave an insight that may settle a few arguments. “I think it’s a combination of the lot of it, but there is a fair bit of gut feel,” he said.”I was lucky enough to go with a CA group to America a few years ago and talk with a few different sports, and we were at the Boston Red Sox and one of their head scouts was asked the question ‘what are you looking for’, and amid a whole range of things he said ‘if they don’t look like somebody, they probably won’t be somebody’. So it’s not that you see someone who is exactly the same as someone else but you see traits in them that have succeeded before.”Probably the best example is Ian Healy, when we looked at Ian Healy years ago, there were other keepers who probably kept as well, other keepers who batted, but he just reminded us of Rod Marsh, the personality and the character of the guy. You just knew he would handle the travails of life as an international cricketer and thankfully that worked out pretty well.”In terms of what he had found most rewarding about the job, Chappell reflected on the work he had done with an enormous number of young cricketers during their formative years, whether as a selector, coach or talent manager.”The thing I enjoy most about it is they love the game as much as we ever loved the game,” he said. “I think it’s a much harder game to play now, particularly as a batsman with three formats, so to become a top class batsman is probably more challenging now than ever before, so to be able to pass on whatever knowledge you’ve accrued over 70 years of life is something that I’ve enjoyed and I think it’s kept me young. So just having that involvement has been an honour as much as anything else to be allowed to stay in the game this long.”
