£18m forward in "ongoing" talks to join Arsenal as club plan replacement

Arsenal are in “ongoing” transfer discussions with a forward via agents, as sporting director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta continue their planning for the summer transfer window.

Arsenal braced for historic Champions League night at Real Madrid

While their recruitment plans for next season are beginning to be put into focus, Arteta and co’s current first priority is preparing for what could be an historic Champions League night at the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos must now mount a major comeback to stand any hope of keeping their Champions League hopes alive, but it is only half-time and Carlo Ancelotti’s side still pose a serious threat.

It is by some distance Arsenal’s most crucial game of the entire season so far, and it has the power to make or break their campaign after they conceded defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

Nothing less than perfect will do against Europe’s most feared side on away turf, with potential victory against Real also coming as a real statement to the rest of the continent that Arsenal are now among it’s truly elite teams.

A good run in the Champions League will also pay dividends when it comes to attracting their top transfer targets when the window reopens, with Berta planning to sign multiple attackers for Arsenal after being appointed as their new sporting director.

This reportedly includes a left-winger, right-winger and striker (GiveMeSport), with many interesting names becoming linked to joining Arteta as we approach what will be a “big” summer for Arsenal, by Arteta’s own admission.

In the last few days, it has emerged that Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman is becoming a more serious target for Arsenal.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg first reported the Frenchman is being viewed as an alternative to Leroy Sané, and Arsenal are among the favourites to strike a deal for Coman.

Now, the same journalist has shared another update on the 28-year-old’s future involving Arsenal.

Arsenal in "ongoing" talks with Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman

Plettenberg reports that Coman’s representatives are in “ongoing” talks over a potential move to Arsenal, while Bayern are set to replace the winger, eight years after he completed a permanent move to Bayern from Juventus for around £18 million.

“There is contact between Arsenal and Kingsley Coman’s management, with both sides in ongoing communication,” wrote Plettenberg.

France's KingsleyComancomes on as a substitute to replace Michael Olise asFrancecoach Didier Deschamps looks on

“Arsenal are aware that Saudi Arabia is a very appealing option for Coman, but they have expressed their interest. Coman and Bayern are expected to part ways in the summer. The situation is positive, with open dialogue between all parties. Coman will be replaced.”

The former PSG forward has featured regularly under Vincent Kompany this campaign, heading into double digits for goals and assists combined, but he’s been in and out of the starting eleven amid fierce competition for places.

The Premier League appears a viable move as he hits the prime of his career, with Tottenham also believed to be expressing an interest in Coman this summer.

Player availability – is Rahul good to go?Captain KL Rahul had missed the second half of the 2023 IPL with a hamstring injury. Nearly 12 months later, he has been out of action for almost two months now because of a quadricep tendon injury. While the BCCI provided no updates on him when they gave the latest on Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna in the lead-up to the IPL, the PTI reported on Monday that he would be fit for LSG’s first game after getting an all-clear from the NCA. He may not keep wicket in the first few games though, and they have solid keeping options in Quinton de Kock and Nicholas Pooran. There’s one change in their bowling ranks. The ECB pulled out fast bowler Mark Wood to manage his workload before the T20 World Cup in June. He has been replaced by West Indies’ latest pace sensation Shamar Joseph. On Wednesday, Justin Langer also said David Willey will miss the first few games of the IPL for personal reasons. What’s new with LSG this year?LSG bolstered their seam-bowling stocks at the 2024 auction by acquiring Shivam Mavi, David Willey, Arshad Khan and Arshin Kulkarni who became a star during the recent Under-19 World Cup. M Siddharth was the only spinner they added to their ranks as a back-up for Ravi Bishnoi. To boost their batting, they traded in Devdutt Padikkal, who recently earned a Test cap, and bought hard-hitting middle-order batter Ashton Turner at the auction.LSG have made changes in the coaching staff, too. After not renewing Andy Flower’s contract, they brought in Justin Langer as the head coach and Lance Klusener as assistant coach. It will be Langer’s first assignment in the IPL although he has won three BBL titles with Perth Scorchers and the T20 World Cup with Australia in 2021.LSG’s musclemen: Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis•BCCIThe good – batting firepower and allroundersWith enough top-order options in Padikkal, de Kock, Kyle Mayers and Deepak Hooda, Rahul may slot in the middle order this IPL. He will be accompanied by Pooran and Marcus Stoinis there, who are already a big threat to any bowling attack. But what they missed the last time, especially in the Eliminator, was the lack of runs from Indian batters. Hooda managed just 84 runs in 12 innings. The LSG management would be hoping for much better returns this time.LSG also boast a line-up studded with allrounders in Stoinis, Willey, Krunal Pandya, K Gowtham, Prerak Mankad and Kulkarni. The not-so-good – where’s the experienced fast bowler? They have an aggressive Naveen-ul-Haq. A wicket-taking but expensive option in Yash Thakur. A vivacious Shamar Joseph but with an experience of only two T20s to date. A penetrative Mohsin Khan. What this line-up lacks is that big-name fast bowler who has proven himself at the international stage for some years and can lead the attack. Thakur was their only quick among the top 20 wicket-takers last IPL and the sooner one of them goes higher on that list this time, the better LSG’s season will be.Schedule insightsLSG play four games in the fixtures announced so far, with a spread-out schedule. After their opener against Rajasthan Royals on the first Sunday of this IPL, they have a five-day gap. Then they have two matches in four days and a four-day gap before returning to Lucknow for their second home game. The big question

Player availabilityKagiso Rabada will miss Kings’ opening match because he is involved in the ODI series against Bangladesh. Jonny Bairstow is in the West Indies with England’s Test side and is likely to miss the first two games. Bairstow could also be unavailable for the final, if Kings make it till there, as England’s Test series against New Zealand begins on June 2.BattingKings have an experienced left-right opening pair in Shikhar Dhawan and new captain Mayank Agarwal. That will be followed by Liam Livingstone and Bairstow. Both overseas batters can take apart all types of bowling, making it a top-four as good as any in the IPL. Shahrukh Khan and Odean Smith ensure the firepower continues, while Harpreet Brar and Rabada provide the depth. Globetrotting allrounder Benny Howell is a back-up for Smith.Kings’ batting line-up is a T20 intent machine, and the appointment for power-hitting specialist Julian Wood as batting consultant is just another indication of how they want to approach this season. If at all there is a weak link, it’s the No. 6 position. Kings can go with either Raj Bawa or Rishi Dhawan. While Bawa was one of the stars at the recent U-19 World Cup and Rishi has domestic form behind him, both are unproven at this level.Another potential concern could be the lack of back-ups for the main batters. Apart from Bairstow and Livingstone, Kings’ only other overseas batter with international experience is Sri Lanka’s Bhanuka Rajapaksa.ESPNcricinfo LtdBowlingKings will rely heavily on Rabada. In fact, he is the only bowler in the squad who is a regular for his national side. But there are plenty of Indian domestic options, Arshdeep Singh arguably the frontrunner for a place in the XI. The other contenders with prior IPL experience are Sandeep Sharma and Ishan Porel.Rahul Chahar and Brar will shoulder the responsibility in the spin department. Chahar can trouble batters with his quick legbreaks, while Brar (6.04) had the best economy among those who bowled more than ten overs in IPL 2021. However, both Chahar and Brar turn the ball in to left-hand batters, which could create bad match-ups for Kings. Livingstone, who can bowl both offspin and legspin, may offer some respite, though.Under-19 star Raj Bawa was bought for INR 2 crore by Punjab Kings•ICC via GettyYoung players to watch out forRaj Bawa, a left-hand middle-order batter and right-arm hit-the-deck seamer, was the Player of the Match for his 5 for 31 against England at the 2022 U-19 World Cup final. Before that, he had also posted the tournament’s highest individual score – an unbeaten 162 at a strike rate of 150 – against Uganda. According to Hrishikesh Kanitkar, India’s coach at the World Cup, Bawa’s standout trait is to remain “composed in all types of situations”. The IPL will test that quality to its fullest.Vidarbha’s left-hand opener Atharva Taide is another one to keep an eye on. In the latest Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 tournament, Taide scored 270 runs at an average of 54.00 and a strike rate of 137.05. He had six 30-plus scores in seven innings and was among the top-ten run getters in the tournament. His left-arm orthodox spin also earned five wickets. But with Agarwal and Shikhar in the side, it’s difficult for him to find a place in the XI.Coaching staffAnil Kumble (head coach), Julian Wood (batting consultant), Damien Wright (bowling coach), Jonty Rhodes (assistant coach)Poll

Tottenham could prove 'irresistible' to manager who Levy was urged to hire before Frank

Tottenham Hotspur could be back on the hunt for another head coach a lot sooner than they would’ve wanted, and one candidate to replace Thomas Frank may find the job too good to turn down.

Pressure piles on Thomas Frank amid Tottenham slide

Frank’s tenure has reached boiling point following three consecutive defeats that have exposed major frailties and escalating supporter unrest.

After humiliating losses against Arsenal (4-1), PSG (5-3) and most recently Fulham (2-1), with just one victory to show from their last seven in all competitions, Spurs currently languish 12th in the Premier League table, boasting just one win at home all season.

Tottenham have suffered ten league defeats on their own turf in 2025, equaling their worst-ever calendar year record. With challenging fixtures against Newcastle, Liverpool and Crystal Palace due this month, starting against the Magpies this evening, things don’t get any easier for Frank.

Media sources also suggest that players have grown increasingly bewildered by Frank’s constant tactical alterations, with strategies frequently changed moments before kickoff or abandoned entirely during matches.

Saturday’s Fulham capitulation — conceding twice within six minutes before Mohammed Kudus’ consolation ultimately proved futile — exposed defensive fragility that has seen Spurs ship eleven goals across their last three encounters.

Relationships between supporters and players have also deteriorated dramatically, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario subject to constant booing against Fulham following his catastrophic error which gifted Harry Wilson their second goal of the game.

Frank criticised fans in the aftermath, calling the behaviour ‘unacceptable’, and this has only heightened tension between Spurs and Lilywhites loyalists in the stand.

The tactician elaborated on this in his pre-Newcastle press conference, attempting to reassure supporters that their feelings matter but the north Londoners need to create a ‘fortress’ at home.

Reports are now emerging that Tottenham are beginning to make contingency plans in the event they decide to sack Frank, so nothing but a victory will do against Newcastle as the Dane looks to relieve the humongous pressure on his shoulders.

Tottenham could prove 'irresistible' to Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner

If Frank is shown his P45, one manager who’s very much in contention to replace him is Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

Former Palace chairman and talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan admitted back in September that he urged ex-Spurs chair Daniel Levy to consider appointing Glasner, and it isn’t hard to see why.

The Austrian, who guided Palace to their first ever major trophy after an historic FA Cup final win over Man City in May, also led the south Londoners to an unprecedented 19-game unbeaten run in all competitions this year — before it was ended by Everton at the Hill Dickinson.

This run was made all the more impressive given his very limited resources and the constant threat of losing star players, with Spurs believed to be real admirers of Glasner’s work.

That is according to TEAMtalk, who report that, while Frank is safe for now, Tottenham could make a move for Glasner and accelerate new manager plans if this slide continues.

They also state that Tottenham could prove ‘irresistible’ to Glasner as a managerial opportunity, with the 51-year-old’s future far from certain as his contract is due to expire at the end of June.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss, who won the Europa League with them in 2022, is a fine candidate to succeed Frank and his looming free agent status makes the prospect of a move all the more appealing.

Asia Cup 2024. Commonwealth Games 2022. T20 World Cup 2020. At all those tournaments, India Women lost in the final. But as they get ready to co-host the 2025 ODI World Cup, captain Harmanpreet Kaur is confident that “this time we will cross the line”.”No doubt we have been through these situations many times,” Harmanpreet said at the captains’ meet in Bengaluru. “We have been playing good cricket, and it’s only about going with good confidence and doing the things the way our team is expecting from us. At the same time, we have been only talking about enjoying this moment rather than thinking [about] what happened in the past. We have learned a lot from our mistakes, and hopefully, this time, we will be on the other side.”This will be Harmanpreet’s fifth ODI World Cup, but first as captain. While she described the feeling of leading India in a home World Cup as “unbelievable”, she does not want her team to take “too much pressure” as they chase their maiden title.Related

“Leading your country is always very special for any player, but leading your country in [an] ODI World Cup is even more special,” she said. “On top of that, it is a home World Cup, so it’s even more special. When I started playing, I never even thought I would get the opportunity to lead my country… it was only in a dream. Everything altogether is exciting.”I just want to go there and enjoy, and play my best cricket. That’s what I’ve been telling myself and my team. The ODI World Cup is happening [in India] after 12 years, and I think it is going to be very amazing for all of us. It’s all about not taking too much pressure.”India have won ten of their 14 ODIs in 2025, with Smriti Mandhana playing a key role with 928 runs – comfortably the most for any batter this year.Smriti Mandhana is the leading run-scorer in ODIs this year•Getty Images

“She has been great,” Harmanpreet said of Mandhana. “The way she is batting nowadays is something really exciting to watch. When I’m batting with her, things become quite easy on the pitch. You don’t need to stress so much because she is always there to help. Having her in my team is a big strength.”India’s only away game during the group stage is against Pakistan in Colombo. At home, they play in Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Indore and Navi Mumbai. Of those grounds, only Visakhapatnam has hosted a women’s ODI previously, in 2014. But Harmanpreet isn’t too worried about the unfamiliarity with the conditions.”The wickets are going to be flat,” she said. “We will get a few practice sessions there to get used to the conditions and the pitches. It’s really about being in a good space. Even though this World Cup is in India, we are not very familiar with the stadiums we are going to play at. But we have enough data to see how the conditions and the pitch are.”Healy: ‘Getting complacent not in Australian culture’With seven titles, defending champions Australia are the most successful team in the Women’s ODI World Cup. But their captain Alyssa Healy feels “every team is on equal footing” this time.”I firmly believe that this is going to be the tightest World Cup that we have been a part of,” she said. “Defending a title is not easy. Obviously, no one has really done it for a long period of time, but it’s not really about that. Every team is here to win the World Cup. We know what we need to do. We have got to beat every single side in the world to be able to lift that trophy at the end.””I feel like I’m part of a really special group at the moment that wants to be better every single day” – Alyssa Healy•Getty Images

The numbers are stacked in Australia’s favour – they have lost just two of their 18 ODIs since the start of 2024, a run that includes beating India in India 2-1 earlier this month. But they are not complacent.”I don’t think it’s quite in the Australian culture to get too complacent about things at any point in time,” Healy said. “People tend to write more about us when we lose than when we actually win. It’s quite a nice thing to experience. I feel like I’m part of a really special group at the moment that wants to be better every single day. They are working to improve themselves both on and off the field, which I think is a really great place to be.”The fact that that mindset’s already in place just allows them to go out there and enjoy their cricket on the field. And that’s basically as simple as it gets. We go out there, we compete as hard as we possibly can, and hopefully the results go our way.”Healy believes it could come down to how a team handles the pressure.”I think conditions could potentially change throughout the World Cup,” she said. “It’s just [about] adapting to them as quickly as possible, and knowing that you have got that depth in your side to make that happen. But I think it’s going to be about who can hold their composure the longest in this tournament and handle the pressure for long periods of time. You are going to have to sustain pressure at different points in time, and put it back on the opposition when you get the opportunity.”

Injured Akash Deep ruled out of Manchester Test

In his absence, India will have to make a choice between the uncapped Anshul Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna

Sidharth Monga22-Jul-20252:21

Manjrekar: India’s quicks not staying fit a serious issue

India captain Shubman Gill has confirmed that Akash Deep has not returned to full fitness in time for the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. Akash Deep sustained a groin injury during the Lord’s Test, and bowled into Morne Morkel’s mitt two days before the Test but not in the nets. His replacement will be either Anshul Kamboj or Prasidh Krishna.India had already confirmed this would be the last of the three promised Tests that Jasprit Bumrah plays in this series. That leaves India with a call to make on the final morning between Prasidh, who is taller and can bring extra bounce into play but has gone at an average of 55.16 and economy of 5.33 in this series so far, and the uncapped Kamboj, who is closer to a like-for-like replacement for Akash Deep in terms of being able to extract seam movement.Gill said Kamboj was close to making his debut, but didn’t rule out Prasidh. Prasidh was asked to move away from his good length and bowl short on flat decks in the first two Tests. “He [Kamboj] is very close to making his debut,” Gill said. “We’re going to see tomorrow between him and Prasidh as to who is going to make it to the XI.”Related

Is worrying about over rates… overrated?

Kamboj’s batting could also be a factor. He averages 16.20 with the bat in first-class cricket, and can strike the ball hard. He has hit 22 sixes in 24 first-class matches, striking at 73.08 per 100 balls. Prasidh has scored just 198 first-class runs at 8.6 per dismissal.Gill repeated that he had full faith in anyone from the squad making it to the final XI. “The kind of skillset that he brings to the table is exactly what we want in this team and he’s there because we believe that he can win us the match,” Gill said of Kamboj. “Even in the second Test match, when Akash Deep was brought in, a lot of people had questions why he’s been brought in, but it’s mainly the belief that we have within our squad that any player that comes in the team is able to or can win matches for us.”The third fast bowler is not the only decision India need to make. They have lost their fourth quick from the last two matches – Nitish Kumar Reddy – to a knee injury. Unlike Akash Deep, whom they trust to be available for The Oval, Reddy has been ruled out of the series. India look set to replace him with a specialist batter in B Sai Sudharsan, leaving them room to replace Washington Sundar with Shardul Thakur should the conditions demand that. Two days out, the conditions in question didn’t look as seam-friendly as you might expect in rain-hit Manchester, but Gill said another day of drizzle and the consequent covering of the pitch might result in help for seam bowling.2:50

Nets watch – Pant keeps, Kamboj bowls and India’s slip cordon

“When I saw the wicket yesterday, it didn’t look that damp,” Gill said. “But obviously, now having to look at the weather, I don’t think there is much chance for the wicket to dry that moisture out. So I think there will be a little bit more for the bowlers. And generally at this venue, it’s a little bit quicker than the other venues we have seen. There’s a bit more pace and bounce.”It will be interesting to see where Karun Nair bats if Sai Sudharsan does come back in. In the first Test, when both played, Sai Sudharsan batted at No. 3 and Nair at No. 6. Nair has had starts after that but has not topped 40 in three Tests. Gill backed Nair to come good.”We think Karun is batting well,” Gill said. “First match, he didn’t really play at this number. It’s difficult when a player is making a comeback in a series like this, but I don’t think there’s been any issue with this batting. I think he’s been batting well. Sometimes it’s also about getting that click. Once you’re able to make your fifty, then you’re able to get back into your zone and get some big runs. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened for him so far, but we are hopeful that he will be able to turn it around.”Gill also confirmed that Rishabh Pant was good to keep wicket after a finger injury kept him away from keeping at Lord’s.India’s likely XI for the fourth Test vs England1 KL Rahul, 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Karun Nair, 4 Shubman Gill (capt), 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 B Sai Sudharsan, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Washington Sundar/Shardul Thakur, 9 Anshul Kamboj/Prasidh Krishna, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mohammed Siraj

Will Jacks’ scintillating 97 led Surrey to a fifth win in a row as they thrashed London neighbours Middlesex by 75 runs at the Kia Oval. The England allrounder, not required for Test duty against India, nevertheless reminded the selectors of his batting prowess, pummelling five sixes and 10 fours in a 56-ball masterclass. Noah Cornwell and Ryan Higgins were the pick of the Middlesex attack with two wickets apiece.Middlesex were never in it in reply, subsiding to 119 all out, New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner taking 3-25.It was a sobering watch for new Seaxes head coach Dane Vilas, who will officially take charge ahead of the County Championship clash with Northamptonshire on Sunday. The one concern for the hosts was the loss of Chris Jordan, who left the field apparently concussed after a heavy fall attempting a catch.Jacks sent the opening ball of the match to the fence before the first of his five sixes came from a clip over long leg. That was the prelude to 22 off the last over of the powerplay bowled by youngster Naavya Sharma which took Jacks to 50 in only 24 balls. There was a brief pause for breath before an audacious golf-swing shot into the crowd at long-off and after being given a life when dropped by Cornwell at deep fine leg, another vicious pull over square leg off Tom Helm took him into the 90s.There would be no hundred as he holed out going for the century in the grand manner, one of three wickets in four balls for Helm but this was scintillating stuff. To Middlesex’s credit others came and went as the hosts didn’t make the most of being 66 without loss after the powerplay and 95 for 2 at halfway.Dom Sibley, dropped on 8 by Shah, reached 27 and Sam Curran 26 before both being caught and bowled by Cornwell, as the visitors chipped away, Ryan Higgins hitting the stumps twice in the final over.Kane Williamson, fresh from his 50 against Essex 24 hours earlier, ramped, paddled drove and cut Reece Topley for four boundaries in his second over to launch the chase, but the former New Zealand Test skipper fell in the next over, slapping Tom Curran straight to Jason Roy at cover.Max Holden picked up the baton with fours to long leg and third, but perished attempting to sweep Mitchell Santner over the long boundary, while Ben Geddes, returning to face his former county, survived two vehement appeals for catches behind later in the same over, but left without scoring in the next trying to go over extra cover.Stephen Eskinazi’s torturous innings of less than a run a ball ended when he was bowled by Santner and Joe Cracknell in his first game in the tournament this season quickly came and went. With the rate required now 14 an over Santner then bowled the dangerous Luke Hollman to claim his third wicket as Middlesex folded.
