This Liverpool star shows why Hodgson axed England’s Old Guard

An impetus on youth is undoubtedly  England’s most visible hallmark for  Brazil 2014.

FA Chief Greg Dyke has created an entire commission specifically to answer the tough questions surrounding home-grown English talents, even suggesting a reconfiguration of the lower leagues and the introduction of ‘B Teams’, and Roy Hodgson has reflected that concern in his squad selection for the tournament, favouring a new breed of young Englishmen over the well-established old guard.

That progressive policy was typified but by no means exclusive to the selection of Luke Shaw over Ashley Cole. Likewise, the England manager overlooked Michael Carrick and Gareth Barry in favour of Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson, and also refused the opportunity to offer John Terry his international swansong.

I still believe that if Hodgon’s life were at stake, Terry and Cole would have both been selected in his World Cup squad. The former was unanimously viewed as the Premier League’s most in-form English defender last season and the latter proved his utility at top level has far from expired with particularly impressive showings against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid in late April.

One could argue, and quite rightly, that an un-dynamic Italy side, limited in its natural pace and penetration going forward, would have been ideal opponents for the Chelsea veterans.

At the same time, taking just five players over the age of 30 to brazil, and only four with 50 or more caps for England, was a huge risk on Hodgson’s part. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana, Ross Barkley, Luke Shaw and Jordan Henderson have all been in proficient domestic form this season, but boasting just 32 appearances for England between them, there was no guarantee that they’d be able to transition their performances to international level.

But the Raheem Sterling’s display against the Azzurri was evidence enough that Hodgson had made the right decision in investing his faith in the Three Lions’ youngest stars at the expense of the old guard.

Many will argue that such praise has come too soon – after all, England’s World Cup fate is now out of our hands after losing to Uruguay Thursday evening. Going out in the group stages would be a huge disappointment, one that could potentially cost Roy Hodgson his job.

But during that 90 minutes against Italy, the Liverpool forward demonstrated everything England have lacked going forward for well over a decade – pace, trickery, intent, but most importantly, confidence and ambition.

England, first and foremost, are and will forever be a direct side. That’s simply the nature of the Premier League; a combination of our country’s philosophical traditions and the division’s entrenched desire to remain the most exciting, complete top flight in world football.

But whilst that trend never translated properly into the former generation – the 40 yard-passes of Steven Gerrard, the target man styles of Andy Carroll and Emile Heskey, the set piece specialities of David Beckham – Sterling gave English directness a whole new meaning against Italy.

For the first time since Joe Cole, in the 19 year-old, England finally have a player prepared to take on opposing defenders, to dare them to commit and entice them into making a mistake. Sterling executed four successful dribbles against the Italians last Saturday, half of the rest of the England team combined and twice as much as our next-best dribbler.

It is not merely a question of the type of player, as I admit, a winger will always be expected to carry the ball more than his team-mates. Rather it is a belief that in taking on defenders one will be successful rather than detrimental to the team. And it’s not just shown in Sterling; Ross Barkley came on to complete two successful dribbles in under half an hour, and that uncharacteristic fluency and confidence in taking on opponents is replicated in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana too.

In a nutshell, they the Three Lions relevance – for more than the last ten years, we’ve appeared distinctly outdated in comparison to European and South American opposition, as if they have somehow evolved further athletically, tactically and technically along the beautiful game’s philosophical spectrum. But Sterling, Barkley, Lallana and company aren’t footballing relics or throwbacks to the game’s past, as one could accuse Steven Gerrard, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Michael Carrick, or even Wayne Rooney, of being.

They are the modern footballer – lightweight, penetrating, skilful and daring – they are everything England have continually suffered without for as long as I can remember. Without our young players, England would be like a World Cup time capsule, echoing an era that the rest of the world has long-moved on from.

Hodgson was right to favour youth over established talent, and regardless of how England finish the tournament – our exit now looks incredibly likely baring a mathematical miracle – he should be rewarded rather than punished for taking a gamble that will undoubtedly have a positive effect on our national game for the many years to come.

FIVE things for Arsenal and Liverpool to look out for in the Champions League

The return of the Tony Britten’s now familiar and much-loved Champions League Anthem as the soundtrack to our Tuesday and Wednesday nights heralds the return of football’s biggest club competition.

Following the draw for the group stages at the end of last month, 32 teams will once again be competing over the course of the season for a place in the UEFA Champions League final in June, which will be played this season at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Although the group stage phase – which runs until December – is a relatively straightforward exercise for the teams most likely to compete in the latter stages of the tournament, there is still plenty to talk about, especially concerning the two teams representing English football on Tuesday night.

Liverpool, who return to the competition after a five-year absence, will certainly be relishing every tie in a group containing pre-tournament favourites and current champions Real Madrid, while Arsenal can be forgiven for experiencing a case of German déja-vu against dauntingly familiar opposition.

In anticipation of this week’s opening set of fixtures, here are five things to look out for in the Champions’ League on Tuesday…

Liverpool keen for a solid start…

Earlier in the week Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard spoke of how jealous he was watching other English teams compete in the Champions League while his own side was suffering a five-year exile after failing to qualify since 2009.

Last season’s memorable Premier League campaign means that the Reds are back, and in lowly Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets Razgrad – who qualified after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win against Steaua Bucharest in which Ludogorets defender Cosmin Monti was the stand-in goalkeeping hero – they face a team who shouldn’t pose too many problems.

Ludogorets came into footballing existence as recently as 2001, and Liverpool will be hoping for a convincing victory in what will surely be their easiest game in the group. Playing in front of an expectant, electric Anfield crowd, Brendan Rodgers’ men have the firepower to swell their goal difference early on, which may be crucial when the final group standings are determined in December.

…With one eye on events in the Bernabeu

Despite securing the mythical decima against city rivals Atletico in a thrilling final in May, ten-time champions and current holders Real Madrid have not had the greatest start to the season.

Having already lost two league games, including last week’s home defeat to none other than Atletico, there is talk of a mini-crisis at the Bernabeu, with Cristiano Ronaldo making public his discontent at the sale of Angel di Maria and Xabi Alonso, two pivotal members of the Champions League-winning side last season.

Though such doom-mongering is exaggerated, now is not a bad time for Swiss side Basel to face Real. The champions of Switzerland are known to produce an upset – Manchester United fans need no reminding of this – and following the disappointing derby defeat on Saturday they may feel that Real are there for the taking, especially if a subdued Ronaldo fails to shake off his sense of dissatisfaction on the pitch.

Though mere qualification is the aim of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool, a shock result here could see them aiming their sights towards a first-placed finish.

Arsenal look to avoid defensive woes at Dortmund

The Signal Iduna Park will feel like a home away from home for many Arsenal fans; for the third time in four years, the Gunners face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Although Jurgen Klopp’s team crucially pipped the North London side to first place in the group last season, the Gunners did register a brilliant 1-0 away victory when the two sides met in North Rhine-Westphalia, and Arsene Wenger will be hoping for another win against a side which has lost a number of its star players in recent years, not least Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze.

Nevertheless, Arsenal will be without a number of key players of their own on Tuesday night due to injury; with Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy both out, and Calum Chambers unlikely to feature, Wenger may have to turn to Mathieu Flamini and Spanish teenager Hector Bellerin to form a makeshift defence.

The loss of Lewandowski may have been a blow for Dortmund, but the team in yellow and black still pose considerable threat through Marco Reus, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Shinji Kagawa. If Arsenal’s motley crew of stopgap defenders can hold them off, a repeat of last year’s triumph is certainly possible.

Wilshere to prove his worth in Europe

After being the subject of much criticism for what was perceived to be a failure to influence games and live up to his considerable promise, Jack Wilshere thrusted the proverbial middle finger right in the face of his doubters on Saturday with an excellent performance against league champions Manchester City, scoring one and assisting another.

Now that he has proved that the ability is undeniably there, he needs to show that he can make a similar impact on a consistent basis. Dortmund’s strength arguably lies in their midfield; if the England international can emerge as the standout player in a middle-of-the-park battle against the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Nuri Sahin and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the criticism may fade away once and for all.

Balotelli’s chance to get going

As mentioned in the opening point, Liverpool’s tie against Ludogorets Razgrad should provide the Reds with an opportunity to record a goal-laden victory, giving them some respite after a poor display in Saturday’s home defeat to Aston Villa in the league.

Now is also the ideal time for Mario Balotelli to score his first goal for the club; after a promising debut against Tottenham Hotspur, the Italian was frustrated against a resolute Villa defence, eventually being substituted with his side still trailing.

Daniel Sturridge’s continued absence through injury will see Balotelli start as Liverpool’s main striker; a goal or two against the Bulgarian minnows should go a long way to calming the nerves of the temperamental forward.

‘Clock is ticking’ for Liverpool bad boy, warns Reds hero

Mario Balotelli still has time to turn his Liverpool career around, but the “clock is ticking”, according to Anfield hero Jan Molby.

The controversial Italian has endured an underwhelming start to life on Merseyside since his £16m summer arrival from AC Milan, with a first Premier League goal still on his ‘to do’ list.

His decision to swap shirts with Real Madrid’s Pepe at half time during Tuesday night’s Champions League clash with the Reds 3-0 down has been front page news in recent days, with some reports even claiming that he could be sold in January if his form doesn’t dramatically improve.

WANT MORE? >> Liverpool transfer news | Latest transfer news

However Molby feels that Balotelli does have a future at the club, but that time is already beginning to run out for the 24-year-old:

“Mario Balotelli still has time to turn things around at Anfield but the clock is ticking.” He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo.

“The Italian has come in for plenty of stick following the defeat to Real Madrid. The sight of him swapping shirts with Pepe at half-time was very disappointing.

“At the end of a first half when Liverpool had been completely outplayed you don’t want to see your players being pally with the opposition. The problem with Balotelli is that he doesn’t have any credit in the bank.

“You certainly can’t be doing it right in the middle of battle when Anfield is hurting. Brendan Rodgers has had words with him about it and that’s the end of it.

“Of much greater concern is the fact that it was another game when Balotelli failed to shine.

“I was surprised that so many people thought it was going to be his night. How was playing Real made for Balotelli? I certainly hadn’t seen anything to believe he would cause them problems.

“I had a feeling when Rodgers signed him that he had taken on his biggest challenge and so it’s proved. The question is what do Liverpool do with him now? To sell him in January would be to admit we made a big mistake signing him.

“I’d be amazed if Rodgers has given up on him yet. He has to continue to work with him at least until Daniel Sturridge is fit.”

Liverpool legends voted best strike duo of all time

Former Liverpool stars Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush have been named the best ever striker duo from the Home Nations by the Vauxhall’s Home Nations Show panel. Ian Wright, Kevin Gallacher and Iwan Roberts reached the verdict, picking the Reds idols ahead of other footballing legends such as Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker.

‘King Kenny’ is widely hailed as one of Scotland’s best ever players, with 30 goals in 102 caps for his nation. He also won the Ballon d’Or Silver and PFA Player of the Year awards while partnering Rush, another Anfield icon. The Welshman was a prolific hit-man in his day, with a fine return of 28 efforts in 73 outings for his country. Rush helped Liverpool to European Cup success on two occasions, while picking up the league trophy five times.

In this dream duo the Scottish ace would play just in behind the Welsh star in what would be a pairing to strike fear into the hearts of even the very best defensive combos in the history of the game. Dalglish hit a staggering 18 goals in the ‘82/’83 season as a 32 year old, while Rush netted a whopping 47 times the following campaign.

Wright said that the choice was a difficult one for him:

“As much as I’d like to put Lineker in – I learned a lot from him when I was sitting on the bench for England! – it has to be Rush and Dalglish. When I watched them, I modelled myself on them…if you’re going to pick the best two out of that lot it has to be them. Proven, fantastic!”

Vauxhall Home Nations fan communities chose nominated pair from each country:

o England: Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer

o Scotland: Kenny Dalglish and Denis Law

o Northern Ireland: David Healy and Gerry Armstrong

Manchester United, lets look at the starting XI you could’ve had…

Manchester United spent an eye-watering £150million this summer to kick-off the Louis van Gaal era at Old Trafford, constituting the second-most expensive transfer window by a single club in the history of the beautiful game, only bettered by Real Madrid’s swoops for Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso and Karim Benzema in summer 2009.

With the Old Trafford outfit now fourth in the Premier League table, one could argue it’s already proving good value for money.

But could United have gone a step better? Perhaps this select XI combining the club’s leading stars and rumoured targets from the summer window can shed some light on the issue.

Having won the club’s Player of the Year award last term and a spot in the PFA Team of the Year the campaign previous, Manchester United were never going to make major changes to their goalkeeping department during the summer.

Indeed, without David De Gea in impeccable form throughout the season, David Moyes’ nightmare one-term tenure could have fared even worse. The 24 year-old has already put in some top performances since the summer, particularly this Man of the Match display against Everton:

//www.youtube.com/embed/v6V34NEJK9M?rel=0

Right-Back – SEAMUS COLEMAN

Manchester United were sporadically linked to Seamus Coleman towards the end of last season but any interest in signing him was ended when the Ireland international extended his contract at Everton in July.

The 26 year-old was nothing short of incredible for the Toffees last season, netting six times from right back to earn him the Player of the Year award at Goodison, in addition to a spot in the PFA Team of the Season. Here’s a look at Coleman’s best strikes from 2013/14:

//www.youtube.com/embed/6URMIvfAyss?rel=0

He’s brought that form into the current campaign too:

And with United rather short of options at right-back, recent reports claim Louis van Gaal could launch a swoop for the in-form Irishman come the January window:

Centre-Back – EZEQUIEL GARAY

Ezequiel Garay has been on Manchester United’s radar since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson and they’re once again linked with the Argentina international ahead of the January window:

Aged 28, Garay is at the height of his career and made it to back-to-back Europa League finals with Benfica, in addition to winning the Primeira Liga title last season. Here’s a clip of the South American in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/5e4QcC7FnvQ?rel=0

Bizarrely however, considering the obviousness of United’s desperate need for added quality and leadership at the heart of defence, the Red Devils stood by during the summer as the towering centre-back joined Zenit St. Petersburg for a mere £12million.

If United wish to bring him to Old Trafford in January, it will now likely cost them around double that fee.

Centre-back – MATS HUMMELS

The defensive signing all Manchester United fans hoped for but never arrived, the Red Devils were strongly linked to German international Mats Hummels throughout the summer:

A World Cup winner and Champions League finalist, famed for his Franz-Beckenbaeur-esque ability to carry the ball out of defence and join the attack, the 25 year-old would have been the perfect upgrade for the heart of Manchester United’s backline. Here’s a clip of Hummels in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/cOlTY9h1IsA?rel=0

And a look at his stats over the last few seasons:

He’s got history with Louis van Gaal too, having briefly worked together at Bayern Munich, but the 6 foot 4 centre-back rejected United’s advances during the summer, instead accepting the Black-Yellows’ club captaincy.

There’s been some interesting developments since then however; firstly, Dortmund have plummeted to 16th in the Bundesliga, just a point above the relegation zone, and secondly, the Westfalen outfit have named their price for Hummels – a whopping £47million:

United showed their willingness to spend during the summer, so a January swoop for that precise fee can’t be ruled out.

Left-Back – Luke Shaw

Manchester United forked out a £30million sum to land Luke Shaw during the summer, a world-record fee for a full-back, but the teenage defender is already looking like he’ll be worth every penny in a few years’ time.

The 19 year-old has improved his fitness and rarely put a foot wrong since making his first Premier League appearance for the Red Devils in September. Here’s a clip of the England international in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/XBz35uBHEsk?rel=0

Central Midfield – Alex Song

Perhaps not a signing on par with Radamel Falcao or Angel Di Maria in terms its Hollywood effect, but now-West Ham loanee Alex Song was on the Red Devils’ radar this summer:

The Cameroon international failed to cement a first team role for himself during two years at Barcelona and was searching for a return to the Premier League in the off-season, some even mooting a return to former club Arsenal.

Manchester United’s midfield has depended on Marouane Fellaini for physical presence this season but Song probably would have been a better option. He’s far more reliable defensively and proven at a higher level, with 54 Champions League outings and 47 international caps under his belt. Here’s a clip of the 27 year-old in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/16KiBaavMQA?rel=0

It’s possible the Old Trafford side launched a bid for Song, but the tough-tackling midfielder always wanted a move back to London.

He’s been enjoying some strong form for the Hammers, playing a significant role in their surprise rise to 6th in the Premier League.

Central Midfield – ARTURO VIDAL

The dynamic presence United’s midfield is still crying out for, the Red Devils came close to signing Arturo Vidal during the summer never got the deal over the line, perhaps due to the Juventus star’s well-documented knee problems.

Regardless however, the Chile international has risen to the forefront of the world’s central midfield elite since joining the Old Lady in 2011, going on to win three consecutive Serie A titles and net 31 goals in 103 league appearances for the Italian champs. Here’s a look at his stats:

And a clip of the 27 year-old in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/r8iKLIacxxw?rel=0

Despite further knee injuries reducing Vidal’s game-time somewhat this term, recent rumours claim the Red Devils could reignite their interest in January:

It’s believed Louis van Gaal will attempt to land Netherlands favourite Kevin Strootman first however, who is two years Vidal’s junior.

Right Wing – JUAN CUADRADO

Football – Colombia v Uruguay – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 – Second Round – Estadio do Maracana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – 28/6/14Juan Cuadrado – Colombia Mandatory Credit: Action Images / Carl RecineEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

Manchester United are a winger short and recent speculation claims Louis van Gaal could even bring Nani back to Old Trafford in January, cutting short his loan spell at former club Sporting Lisbon.

It makes you wonder however why the Red Devils didn’t take more significant strides to land rumoured target Juan Cuadrado during the summer:

The Colombian international absolutely destroyed Serie A last season and brought his form to the World Cup, as shown below:

In fact, nobody bettered his four assists at Brazil 2014 and Cuadrado has started the current season in a similar vein:

Combining pace, trickery, ruthless athleticism and netting prowess, this goal typifies the South American:

His mixture of industry, quality and threat-in-behind would have been perfect for a Red Devils side that’s lacked natural penetration going forward this season.

Cuadrado signed a new contract in October but it included a £27million release clause, so United could return for the 26 year-old in the New Year.

No.10 – WAYNE ROONEY

Named Manchester United’s new captain in August and long-billed as the poster boy of the post-Ferguson era at Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney’s place in the starting Xi was never in doubt despite Louis van Gaal splashing out an incredible £150million during the summer.

He’s been in habitually strong form this season, as shown below:

And after some experimentation with his role in the first team, it’s now clear that van Gaal prefers the 29 year-old at No.10.

Left Wing – ANGEL DI MARIA

The most expensive signing in Manchester United and British football history, £59million acquisition Angel Di Maria hasn’t disappointed since moving to Old Trafford in August.

He’s already established himself as one of the Premier League’s stand-out stars, as detailed below:

The highlight of his United tenure thus far? This absolute stunner against Leicester City:

Striker – Robin van Persie

A firm favourite of Louis van Gaal and with readily-available world-class strikers in rather short supply during the summer, the United gaffer was always going to give Robin van Persie the nod in the lone front-man role.

Perhaps that was a bit of a faux pas however; the Netherlands international has netted just three times from eleven Premier League starts this year and at 31, his age is really beginning to tell.

He netted a vital strike to claim United a point against Chelsea however and would likely be faring better right now with this impressive select Xi behind him.

[ad_pod id=’ricco’ align=’center’]

Tottenham… Here’s the starting XI you could’ve had

The January transfer window ended on more of a whimper than a bang, with the biggest deal of deadline day coming in the form of Chelsea’s £23million swoop for Juan Cuadrado – a transfer that had been talked about for a while now.

Tottenham were particularly quiet on the inward front last month, with their only arrival coming in the form of League One prodigy Dele Alli, who has now been loaned back to MK Dons for the remainder of the campaign.

So, should the Lilywhites be praised for not falling into the many traps of the winter market, or is this a window of missed opportunities for Spurs?

Perhaps this select XI, combining the club’s top performers with rumoured January targets, will shed some light on the debate.

GOALKEEPER – HUGO LLORIS

Rather than adding to their goalkeeping department in January, Tottenham spent the month keeping Hugo Lloris’ potential suitors at bay.

The France international has enjoyed some incredible form this term, and he’s currently third in the Premier League’s saves rankings with 61 in 23 appearances, in addition to recording six clean sheets.

The 28 year-old signed a five-year contract extension in the summer, in theory protecting him from a winter departure. But as rumours of Manchester United’s David De Gea moving to Real Madrid gained traction, The Express speculated that Lloris could be targeted as his replacement.

Eventually however, neither deal took place.

RIGHT BACK – MARTIN MONTOYA

//www.youtube.com/embed/UyThTfaibVY

Having emerged on Spurs’ radar ahead of January 2014 and recently declared himself to be ‘100%’ committed to leaving Barcelona, I find it incredibly surprising that none of Martin Montoya’s mooted suitors launched a swoop for him last month.

The right-back is considered to be one of the more promising La Masia products of recent years, exploding onto the La Liga scene with a stunning long-range strike against Malaga during the 2012/13 campaign – a huge testament to his quality on the ball – and also winning two European Championships with Spain’s U21 squad.

He’s continued to impress in a cameo role but has grown frustrated with his recent lack of game time in preference of Dani Alves, managing just four starts in the league this term.

The 22 year-old would have been a fantastic addition to the Spurs squad, being equally adept on either defensive flank, and his £16million release clause should have been within the North Londoners’ financial reach last month.

Such a bid failed to materialise however, and reports since claim Montoya’s about to extend his contract at the Nou Camp.

CENTRE-BACK – JAN VERTONGHEN

Jan Vertonghen is still yet to rekindle the imperious, ball-playing form of his inaugural Premier League campaign, but we have seen a mini revival in the Tottenham centre-back this season.

His performances have significantly improved since being partnered with summer signing Federico Fazio, and he’s now averaging an impressive 1.6 tackles, 1.9 interceptions, 6.7 clearances and 2.2 successful aerial duels per match, with a pass completion of 87%.

Having rejected a contract extension in September, many speculated the Belgium international would be poached by another club in the winter window.

Liverpool, Manchester United and even local rivals Arsenal were listed as potential suitors, but the 28 year-old remains a Spurs player for now.

CENTRE-BACK – FABIAN SCHAR

This inclusion is no diss to the aforementioned Federico Fazio, but Tottenham had the opportunity to snap up one of European football’s brightest defensive prospects last month in Basel centre-half Fabian Schar.

The 23 year-old has excelled in the Champions League over the last 18 months, averaging an incredible 3.3 tackles, 4 interceptions and 6.7 clearances per match, and also impressed in a cameo role for Switzerland at the World Cup.

He boasts a supremely confident, front-footed style, reminiscent of Jan Vertonghen’s, and with his contract now into its final six months, he was linked with a plethora of top clubs ahead of the January window.

The Metro believe he could have been signed for just £9.5million, but Schar remains with the Swiss Champions.

LEFT BACK – BEN DAVIES

Having entered the January window with an incredible five players capable of filling in a left back – Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Ben Davies, Kyle Naughton and Benoit Assou-Ekotto – No.3 is one of the only departments that didn’t require Tottenham’s attention last month.

Instead, the Lilywhites spent the window separating the left-back wheat from the left-back chaff; Naughton moved to Swansea for £5million and Assou-Ekotto had his contract terminated, evoking a rather hilarious response on Twitter.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD – YOHAN CABAYE

Cleary out of favour at current club PSG, managing just nine starts in Ligue 1 this season, former Newcastle star Yohan Cabaye was certainly there for the taking last month.

The France international’s £20million valuation may have been a little pricey for the Lilywhites mid-season, but Mauricio Pochettino’s lack of faith in Spurs’ current central midfielders is obvious, with the Argentine preferring academy duo Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb over the likes of Moussa Dembele, Paulinho and Etienne Capoue, who cost the club a combined £32million.

The 29 year-old, who blends industriousness and a cultured passing game with incredible potency from dead ball situations, is well-proven in the Premier League too, boasting 18 goals and 15 assists in 92 appearances from his two-and-a-half terms on Tyneside.

A number of English sides were linked throughout the window, but Cabaye reportedly rebuffed their interest, instead preferring to fight for his place at Parc de Princes.

FABIAN DELPH

Another midfielder that would have been perfect for the Lilywhites, in my opinion at least, is Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph.

Much like the action-packed Ryan Mason who’s gained such a fan in Mauricio Pochettino, the England international is another gut-busting midfielder, offering athleticism, work-rate and trickery, as demonstrated in the above goal against Chelsea last season. He’s averaged an impressive 1.6 tackles, 2.4 successful dribbles and 1.1 chances created this term.

That makes him an ideal suitor to the high-pressing style Pochettino is trying to implement at White Hart Lane, and with Delph’s contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, it seemed a transfer situation made in heaven. A £7.5million bid was even speculated by some news outlets.

Eventually however, Spurs offered Mason a five-year deal instead before signing League One midfield sensation Dele Alli on deadline day, whilst Delph agreed new terms at Villa Park.

RIGHT WING – MEMPHIS DEPAY

Tottenham have lacked viable options out wide this season and they were resultantly linked to Eredivisie star Memphis Depay during the January window, along with Manchester United.

The 20 year-old has wreaked havoc in the Dutch top flight over the last 18 months, amassing 25 goals and 10 assists in his last 49 league outings for PSV, including a return of 13 goals in 17 appearances this season, and also impressed for the Netherlands at the World Cup, netting twice in the group stages.

Already drawing comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo, in part due to their shared free kick technique, Depay is regarded as one of European football’s hottest prospects. Despite signing a new contract with Eindhoven in the summer, Mirror Football alleged that he could have been available for just £15million.

A bid never materialised but with the explosive winger continuing to improve his game at an incredible rate, we could see the White Hart Lane outfit launch a swoop in the summer.

ATTACKING MIDFIELD – CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN

No matter who Tottenham signed this January, Christian Eriksen’s place in the starting Xi would never have come under genuine threat. The Danish international has emerged as a real talisman for the Lilywhites this term, scoring nine goals in 23 appearances – including, rather incredibly, three last-minute winners.

Also averaging an impressive 2.3 chances created per match, the 22 year-old could well be the next Spurs star to leave the club for a ridiculous amount of money.

LEFT WING – ANDRE SCHURRLE

With Chelsea’s interest in Fiorentina star Juan Cuadrado well known, Tottenham were reported as one of the clubs willing to take fellow winger Andre Schurrle off the west London outfit’s hands, along with Wolfsburg and Liverpool.

The German international has struggled for game-time this term, seeing just 433 minutes in the Premier League, but he proved his quality at the World Cup, scoring twice from the bench and providing a tournament-winning assist for Mario Gotze.

His blend of firepower, pace and defensive work-rate in the winger-forward role would have suited the Lilywhites’ style and philosophy perfectly, but the 24 year-old eventually joined Wolfsburg on deadline day in a £22million deal.

Reports since claim Tottenham inquired regarding Schurrle’s services, but were put off by Chelsea’s £30million price-tag for selling to a divisional rival.

STRIKER – MATTIA DESTRO

//www.youtube.com/embed/WsBaQTCBym8

Despite the recent heroics of Harry Kane, The Metro reported the Lilywhites to be in a race with Arsenal to sign Roma striker Mattia Destro during the final week of the winter window, following revelations that he’d grown tired over a lack of first team football at the Stadio Olympico and was interested in other opportunities abroad.

The 23 year-old boasts a promising return of 23 goals in 52 Serie A appearances for the Italian capital outfit and is regarded as a particularly efficient striker, grabbing five goals this term from just 22 efforts at goal, with a shot accuracy of 67%.

And although Kane has been in top form this term, earning him a new contract two days ago, the rest of Tottenham’s strikeforce have scored just thrice between them – so an injection of firepower for the end of the campaign could have really improved Spurs’ top four chances.

TalkSport alleged a part-exchange for the Italy international involving Vlad Chiriches, but such a deal failed to materialise and Destro instead joined AC Milan on loan.

Three stars to turn Manchester United into title contenders

Fresh from witnessing a defensive and attacking master-class against Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash, Manchester United fans have renewed belief that the squad of players they have are actually capable of making 4th or even higher come May 24th.

Fellaini is beginning to repay some of the £27.5m former manager David Moyes spent on him and Wayne Rooney is thriving having being re-instated in his preferred centre-forward position. The England international showed no signs of a hangover from his run-in with Phil Bardsley’s right fist and put in another knock-out performance against Mauricio Pochettino’s top four challenging Tottenham Hotspur side.

But if they are to make a real challenge for the title next year they will need still need to improve their squad. In light of this, here are THREE talents that can ensure United will be there of there abouts come this time next year:

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

United still need a stronger centre-back partnership than the one Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are offering as their back line has looked shaky all season. Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels has been on United’s wish list for some time, and while he is his club’s captain, Dortmund have dramatically slipped down the table since their 2012 Bundesliga title victory meaning now may be the right time for the 26-year-old to make a change.

The World Cup winner’s asking price is said to be around £47 million, according to The Daily Express, and in return United would be getting a highly capable player who will sure up their central defence. Hummels can be paired with either Phil Jones or Chris Smalling to see which duo works best or the club may even look at bringing in another player altogether.

Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Manager Louis van Gaal has already admitted that he wants to bring in a central midfielder in the summer transfer window. United have been linked to a few different players but Juventus’ Arturo Vidal has already been publicly praised by the Dutchman.

Vidal joined the Italian giants in 2011, and has since won three consecutive Serie A titles, and looks set for a 4th. The central midfielder is known as a versatile player who can play box to box while assisting defence or attack. Considered a complete midfielder, Vidal is one of the best in his position.

As the Red Devils have struggled with injuries and formations, captain Wayne Rooney has been drafted in numerous times this season to play in midfield due to United’s lack of options, leaving the team unbalanced and out of position. With his domestic titles and European experience, Vidal is just the right type of player to control United’s midfield and help them on their road back to the top.

Memphis Depay (PSV Eindhoven)

With Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao both only finding a combined total of 14 league goals this season it has been down to Wayne Rooney and a multitude of other players to find the net. United need a consistent goal scorer like Sergio Aguero is for Manchester City and Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

With that in mind, 21-year-old Memphis Depay looks the right man for the job. While technically a winger not an out-and-out striker, Depay is Eredivise’s top scorer with 16 goals for PSV Eindhoven this season, and The Interntational Business Times have suggested that he could be set to leave the club this summer. Priced at around £20 million, United would be getting a young pacy talent who already has a good relationship and understanding of Van Gaal’s tactics.

Lack of ambition… Man United ace must move on

Robin van Persie wants to stay at Manchester United to warm the bench.

Well, that’s the claim from the Daily Mail, who insist that despite a possible lack of playing time next season the 31-year-old is eager to see out the last year of his contract and help the Red Devils with their, likely, return to the Champions League and title ambitions.

Although a great forward just a few years ago and still useful on his day, it would be shame to see Van Persie reduced to this, with a move away from Old Trafford potentially what he should be looking at.

Here are FIVE reasons why…

[interaction ]

Will he really get playing time at United?

The big question RVP must ask himself.

As it stands, it looks unlikely that the Dutchman will be anything more than a back-up man, with, despite his close relationship with Louis van Gaal, his role having come into question.

Van Persie looks unable to contribute to LVG’s desired attacking set-up, with his fading pace becoming more of an issue.

Is he still cut out for English football?

Erm… it doesn’t look good.

Anyone who’s watched Van Persie this season cannot deny that he’s missing that yard of pace and explosiveness he once had, which is vital in getting into the right position and putting away chances in the Premier League.

It’s a shame, given that RVP was one of the finest forwards around a few years ago, but mother time waits for no man.

More competition likely to come in

Edinson Cavani, Gonzalo Higuain, Carlos Bacca… it’ clear that an attacking talent is on Van Gaal’s radar. Should one, or potentially more, arrive, then Van Persie will sure be shifted down the pecking order.

At which point staying would look a foolish move, given that, at 31, the former Arsenal skipper needs to be playing to keep in the groove.

Chance of late career success

Turkey, America, Italy… all are potential destinations for Van Persie, who could travel off in search of one last hurrah.

He still has miles left on the clock, but in the English game his lack of physical ability is becoming an issue, and although a little stereotypical, other divisions across the planet rely less on running and more on technical prowess… which he still has!

Could be the main man somewhere else

Van Persie operates more effectively when he’s the focal point of the team.

At Arsenal Arsene Wenger built his tactics to get the best from him, which garnered a shed load of goals, and in his debut Old Trafford campaign Sir Alex Ferguson did the same, which brought the title.

Van Gaal looks unlikely to do that now for the striker, but elsewhere a big side may be more willing to alter their style to get the best from RVP, who, lest we forget, is still a great footballer.

You’re welcome… Ex-boss says Man United benefiting from his work

Former Manchester United boss David Moyes says that his old have benefitted from his decision to sign Marouane Fellaini and that he’s “not surprised” the Belgian has come good at Old Trafford.

The powerful midfielder was the Scot’s only addition of the summer – following him from Everton – he took over from Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm of the Red Devils, and was widely criticised during his debut campaign.

Fellaini was a late purchase after a host of other targets escaped the club’s grasp, while the £27.5m fee paid could have been avoided had United moved earlier to trigger a release clause worth £23.5m.

Moyes was sacked last year and the big-haired 27-year-old was expected to have little future under Louis van Gaal, but his bombarding showings have made him a key member of the Dutchman’s now impressive XI.

And the now Real Sociedad gaffer says that he never doubted his marquee buy, who was unfortunate that the circumstances of his arrival increased the pressure on him:

“It was a big move for him, it was a big move following me and being the only signing made it even more difficult.” He told The Express.

“We wanted to bring in other players and the recruitment didn’t work the way we wanted it to and, ideally, we wouldn’t have made Fellaini our one and only signing if we could have helped it.

“But I am not surprised at Fellaini because I thought he had made a big impact on England over the years. He texts me quite regular and I always text him back and tell him how well he is doing and to keep going. I’m really pleased for him.

“He will not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he can affect games and you want players who can affect games.”

From Man City to Chelsea… surely not?

There have been some crazy transfer rumours flying around but no one expected Premier League champions Chelsea to show an interest for out-of-form Yaya Toure.

Manchester City are seemingly resigned to the fact that Toure will leave at the end of the season after a tough campaign has seen the former hero endure boos from fans. He is part of an ageing squad and is thought to feel unappreciated and unwanted at the club. At the beginning of May, Toure’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, said that he would be “90 percent certain” to leave the Eithad at the end of the season. The Sky Blues would save £220,000 a week in his wages so they will be able to bring in some new, fresh talent. The club are hoping for at least £10 million for the midfielder after they paid £24million for him off Barcelona back in 2010. There have already been rumours that Inter Milan and Paris Saint Germain are interested in Toure, but many fans got a shock when Premier League rivals Chelsea were reported as ‘interested’.

The Blues’ boss is a big admirer of the Ivory Coast international who is a team mate and friend of Stamford Bridge legend, Didier Drogba. The gaffer believes that Toure still has the determination and power that a player needs in the Premier League and he hasn’t been utilised enough by his current club.

It seem’s highly unlikely that City would be happy with Toure joining their major rivals, especially as they beat them to the Premier League title this season. It already looks like James Milner will be heading to Liverpool or Arsenal on a free transfer after he refused to sign the new contract City had laid out for him. Inter Milan are apparently keen to get a deal done as soon as possible with it believed they are willing to pay £14.5million for three years. Toure is keen on a longer contract, but they will be willing to add a one year option on of it means they can sign him straight away.

City would certainly prefer Toure to go abroad, but the appeal of the Premier League could mean he goes to their biggest rivals. When it first broke that Chelsea were interested in the 29-year-old it seemed almost unbelievable, but the more people talk about it, it seems more and more likely that it could happen. Mourinho would love to sign a key player from his title rivals and Toure would be a great addition to the Chelsea midfield to bring in a strength and brute power.

City might not like it, but Jose usually gets what Jose wants.
